Tottenham Hotspur head into Thursday’s Carabao Cup clash against Liverpool with some momentum behind them after beating Brentford 2-0 in West London on Sunday afternoon.

After losing to Leicester City at home in their previous Premier League outing, Spurs picked up a vital three points at the Bees as a Vitaly Janelt own goal put them ahead before Pape Matar Sarr sealed the win with a second goal on 87 minutes.

Spurs hold a 1-0 lead over Liverpool after winning the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final in January. Lucas Bergvall scored the only goal with 86 minutes on the clock. The winner of the semi-final will face either Newcastle United or Arsenal in the final, with the Magpies 2-0 up from their first leg.

Ange on Brentford win

Ange Postecoglou said after his side’s win at Brentford: “Coming here isn’t easy, they score a lot of goals at home and the way they play, they invariably get a lot of balls into the box, throw-ins, crosses, set-pieces, which you have to deal with. Again, playing on Thursday night, virtually the same team, we had to dig in, and I thought the boys did that outstandingly well. For the most part, we didn’t allow them anything clear cut, any chances they had were under pressure, and we allowed the quality of our football to hurt them going the other way.”

He continued: “Look, we know the situation we’re in. It’s not a great situation in the league and we have to turn that around. We’ve been through a tough time, for sure. Slowly, but surely, we’re getting players back. We had Djed back today and it made an enormous difference, We’ve one new face through the door, players coming back from injury over the next two weeks, that will give everyone a lift and we need to sustain this form in the league now, get out of the situation we’re in and then tackle the other big tasks ahead of us.”

Liverpool injury worry

Liverpool continued their charge towards the Premier League title with a 2-0 win over Bournemouth on Saturday afternoon. Mohamed Salah scored in each half as the Reds maintained a six-point lead over Arsenal, who responded with a 5-1 victory over Manchester City on Sunday.

Right-back Trent Alexander Arnold was forced off against the Cherries on Saturday and manager Arne Slot does not expect him to be available against Spurs, as further diagnosis is awaited. He said: "The situation was that he said to me, 'You have to take me off' and he sat on the floor and we took him off. He felt something, I can't tell you exactly what and how bad it is of course because we are one hour after the game, but it is never a good sign if a player is asking for a substitution. This is not a fact but I would be surprised if he plays on Thursday, but let's hope he is back with us as soon as possible."
