Why Cucurella was booed in semi-final
Spain's Marc Cucurella was booed by sections of supporters during Tuesday's Euro 2024 semi-final win over France - and the Chelsea defender has claimed he does not know what those Germany fans 'were trying to achieve' with their antics.
Cucurella was jeered from the start of Spain's 2-1 win amid a controversial handball decision in the quarter-final win over Germany last Friday.
Jamal Musiala's effort was blocked by Cucurella's hand inside the penalty area with the score level at 1-1 in extra time.
Referee Anthony Taylor insisted Cucurella's arm was not in an unnatural position and his decision was supported by the VAR officials.
Despite the decision being correct under UEFA's interpretation of the handball law, Cucurella was subsequently booed by Germany fans, but insisted he had done nothing wrong.
"These are things that happen, I'm not to blame for anything," Cucurella told Spanish radio station Cadena Cope.
"I don't know what they were trying to achieve with that, but that's the way it is. The most important thing is that we're in the final, and that's it.'
Team-mate Daniel Vivian criticised the treatment of Cucurella, labelling it 'a disgrace'.
"No player deserves this," he said, as reported by Kicker.
"I think if you come onto a football pitch to boo someone, you have no respect for someone who is doing their job."
Maresca seeks to rebuild 'winning mentality' at Chelsea
New Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca stressed the need to address the culture at the club following two tumultuous years in which the team failed to challenge at the top of the Premier League.
In his first interview since being appointed to replace Mauricio Pochettino, the former Leicester boss said it was "clear" that there is work to be done to rebuild the connection between the club and their supporters as he seeks to install a "winning mentality" in a side which has finished 12th and sixth in its last two campaigns.
The Italian was appointed in June, two weeks after Pochettino left by mutual consent having failed to reach an agreement with the club's hierarchy over the scope of his responsibility for football matters at Stamford Bridge.

Maresca's work in returning Leicester to the top flight at the first attempt impressed Chelsea during an extensive search to replace Pochettino, with his winning mentality understood to have been a key factor in his appointment as well as positive feedback from young players who had previously worked with him.
"When you join a club you try to analyse what the club and the team needs to improve, to do the right things," the 44-year-old told the club's official website.
"For me, it's quite clear we need to create as soon as possible the right mentality, the right culture. A culture that the fan can be proud of the team.
"We're going to try to be an aggressive team on the ball and off the ball. We need to create this connection between the fans and the club, especially at home.
"When you have your own fans behind the team, pushing, it's like playing with 12 players. That's what we have to create here."

Leicester sign Chelsea Academy graduate Golding
Leicester have signed Michael Golding on a four-year deal from Chelsea.
The 18-year-old midfielder made one senior appearance at Chelsea, coming on as a substitute in a 4-0 FA Cup win over Preston in January.
“I’m really looking forward to making leaps and bounds in my career here at Leicester and working hard to help the team as much as I can,” Golding told the Leicester website.
“Obviously the history of the club speaks for itself. There are great players here and I’m looking to soak up as much information as I can from the senior players, to learn from the staff and hopefully have a great season.”
Golding captained England at the 2023 European U17 Championships in Hungary and has also been capped at U16 and 18 level.

Chelsea have agreed deals to sign Boca Juniors defender Aaron Anselmino and Basel defender Renato Veiga.
Anselmino, 18, will cost £15.6m and will see out the season with Boca before moving to Stamford Bridge in December.
Veiga, 20, has left Basel's training camp ahead of joining Chelsea in a £12m move.
AC Milan were interested in Veiga, who can also play in midfield or at full-back.

Chelsea are set to sign Basel defensive midfielder Renato Veiga on an eight-year deal, according to Fabrizio Romano.
The Portugal U21 international is expected to undergo a medical ahead of a €14m (£11.9m) move.

Chelsea remain unwilling to meet Napoli's asking price for striker Victor Osimhen despite the Italian club lowering their demands below his £110m release clause (The Mirror).
Chelsea have had a £42m bid for Atletico Madrid striker Samu Omorodion rejected, with the Spanish club holding out for at least £70m (The Sun).
Chelsea have agreed a £12m deal to sign Portugal U20 defender Renato Veiga from Swiss side Basel (Daily Mail).

Chelsea have reportedly had a £42m offer for Atletico Madrid striker Samu Omorodion rejected by the Spanish club.
The Sun claim that Atletico are holding out for at least £70m for the Spain Under-21 international.
The 20-year-old has been likened to former Chelsea icon Diego Costa. He scored eight goals in 34 league appearances last season while on loan at Alaves.
Omorodion has four years left on his current contract so the LaLiga club are in no position where they have to sell.
The report adds that Omorodion has been identified by Chelsea's owners and recruitment team led by Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart as he fits the club's profile of a talented youngster with huge potential.
Cucurella admits attempts to persuade Williams to join Chelsea
Marc Cucurella says he is trying to persuade Spain's star winger Nico Williams to join Chelsea.
Williams has impressed for Spain at Euro 2024, helping his country to the quarter-finals while attracting interest from clubs keen to sign him from Athletic Bilbao.
Speaking to Spanish outlet Sport about reports linking Williams with Barcelona, Spain team-mate Cucurella said: "He would be a great signing [for Barcelona] but it all depends on what he wants.
"I've been telling him to sign for Chelsea. In the end everything depends on him. He is very young [but] with a lot of experience. I think he will be a great player."

Palmer repeat? 'Chelsea interested in Man City's McAtee'
Chelsea and a number of other Premier League clubs are interested in Manchester City midfielder James McAtee according to the Daily Mail.
The report suggests the 21-year-old is scheduled to travel with City on their pre-season tour of the United States.
McAtee has spent the last two seasons on loan at Sheffield United, and City, aware of interest in the youngster, are including him in their pre-season plans.
McAtee has made seven senior appearances for City and has two years left on his contract at the Etihad Stadium.
Director of football operations and development Bath leaves Chelsea
Chelsea's director of football operations and development Neil Bath is leaving the club.
He was appointed Chelsea academy manager in 2004 and helped to establish one of the best youth development systems in world football.
In his time, players such as Reece James, Mason Mount and Conor Gallagher became first-team regulars and England internationals.
A statement from Chelsea's owners read: "Neil built the foundations for the Chelsea academy at Cobham and his unwavering commitment, dedication and pursuit of excellence set unparalleled standards across the sport.
"His legacy will live on and the most fitting tribute we can give to him for more than 30 years’ service is to uphold those standards in the years to come."
Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley, the sporting directors, added: "Neil’s legacy in football will stand the test of time.
"His contribution to not only the success of our Academy but youth football across the world cannot be understated.
"He has been a pleasure to work with since we joined the club, illustrating the very highest of work ethics and commitment."
Head of youth development Jim Fraser has already left the club.

Chelsea have completed the £30m signing of Leicester midfielder Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall.
The 25-year-old joins new Blues manager Enzo Maresca in swapping the King Power Stadium for Stamford Bridge this summer.
Dewsbury-Hall scored 12 Championship goals and registered 14 assists under Maresca last season.
The midfielder is Chelsea's fourth summer signing after deals were completed for Fulham defender Tosin Adarabioyo, Aston Villa midfielder Omari Kellyman and Barcelona forward Marc Guiu.

Chelsea have signed Marc Guiu from Barcelona after activating the striker's £5m release clause.
Guiu has signed a five-year deal at Stamford Bridge, with the option for a further 12 months.
The 18-year-old scored within the first minute of his Barcelona debut last year, while he also netted in the Champions League.
Guiu said: "It's an immense joy to sign for Chelsea and I struggled to sleep ahead of the journey here because I was so excited.

Ipswich have signed Omari Hutchinson from Chelsea in a club-record deal.
Sky Sports News understands Ipswich have agreed a deal for an initial fee of £18m plus performance related add-ons for the winger, who has signed a five-year contract at the Tractor Boys.
The 20-year-old moves to Ipswich permanently after impressing on loan at Portman Road last season in the Championship as he contributed 10 goals and six assists in their automatic promotion to the Premier League.
