Chelsea defender Gilchrist joins Sheff Utd on loan

Chelsea defender Alfie Gilchrist has joined Sheffield United on loan.

The 20-year-old, who penned a new Blues deal last summer, has joined the Championship side on a loan deal until the end of the season.

He said: "It has always been the plan to showcase what I can do in the Premier League with the chances I've had, so now I want to try and do that week in, week out, here.

"This is a new challenge. I am taking myself out of my comfort zone. I've been there (at Chelsea) a while now, so I am ready to kick on. I came here last season for an away day, and seeing the fans and how they get behind the team, how much they love it, I was impressed."

New Chelsea keeper Jorgensen on 'very good' relationship with Sanchez

New Chelsea goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen has insisted he has a "very good" relationship with Robert Sanchez, as they battle to be Enzo Maresca's number one.

Jorgensen - a summer signing from Villarreal - started his first game for the club in the 2-1 defeat to Real Madrid and afterwards was asked about how he gets on with the Blues No1 he could well displace.

"It's very good and he works with me very well and we’re doing good training together," said Jorgensen.

Asked about the defeat to Real and Maresca's subsequent quotes that Chelsea's defensive line needs to drop by four or five metres, Jorgensen said: "I think they are doing good but we have to work on some things. Also me, I need to be high when the defensive line is so high, but we can work on that as we have two weeks until the Premier League starts so we will work on that.

"No, I think they do it pretty good and I think I could also be high and make less space. We will get to know each other and will work on some things."

Maresca blames bad defensive 'habit' as Chelsea lose again

Chelsea's US tour ended in another defeat, with Real Madrid winning 2-1 in Charlotte and Blues boss Enzo Maresca bemoaning historical issues with the team's high line for their defensive issues.

"It’s a problem that we are trying to solve in pre-season since day one," said the Italian, after seeing goals inside the first half hour from Dani Ceballos and Brahim Diaz give the Champions League winners the advantage before Noni Madueke pulled one back with a header before half-time.

"One of my first meetings with the squad was about the number of goals we conceded last year with the defensive line being very high. It is something that we are trying to work on.

Chelsea's line-up vs Real Madrid

"Today offensively, once again, I think we were there because the patterns are there and we created chances. The problem has been defensively and when I say defensively, I don’t just mean the defensive line. All of the players.

"It is a habit. We are not working on playing with the defensive line higher. It is a habit from last year or from years ago. I don’t know. But we are trying to drop the defensive line by four or five metres so we have the advantage and don’t concede the balls in behind.

"Last season we conceded many goals with this problem and hopefully we can solve this problem very soon."

Time is running out before the start of the new season. Chelsea play Inter Milan at Stamford Bridge on Saturday and then open their Premier League campaign at home to defending champions Manchester City, who beat them 4-2 earlier this week.

In fact, the defeat to Real Madrid means Chelsea have lost three of their five pre-season games Stateside, only beating Club America and drawing with League One Wrexham.

But it will be the performances more than the scorelines which will be the concern for Chelsea supporters ahead of the new season.

Reece James had to make a last-ditch tackle to stop Vinicius Jnr and Diaz shot wide after Levi Colwill was dispossessed inside his own six-yard box before the opener - with defensive errors being a theme of this tour.

New goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen made his first start but was beaten by Ceballos' close-range finish and eight minutes later Diaz took the ball past the new shot-stopper to convert from a tight angle after Vinicius Jnr's through ball.

Enzo Fernandez's cross allowed Madueke to head in a reply but the second half lacked clear cut chances for either side.

Napoli still working on a deal for Lukaku

Latest from Sky Sports News' Dharmesh Sheth:

Napoli are still working on a deal to sign Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku.

Chelsea want in the region of £35m for the 31-year-old.

Napoli would have to part with Victor Osimhen to proceed with a move for Lukaku.

The clubs were in talks over a deal that would have seen Lukaku move to Napoli and Osimhen go to Chelsea.

While that deal has not been completely ruled out, Chelsea’s focus is on signing Atletico Madrid striker Samu Omorodion.

Napoli are exploring other potential destinations for Osimhen. Ideally, they want to sell him – or at least have an obligation to buy inserted in a potential loan.

Chelsea keen on O'Riley as potential Gallagher replacement

Chelsea are assessing potential replacements should Conor Gallagher leave the club.

We understand one of several options they are keen on is Matt O'Riley at Celtic.

O'Riley has been the subject of bids from Atalanta this summer, and he has further interest from other clubs in the Premier League and abroad.

Atletico Madrid, who have agreed a £34m deal with Chelsea for Gallagher, made a bid for O'Riley in January.

Talks are continuing between Gallagher and Chelsea this weekend to find a solution to his future.

Gallagher is assessing his options.

As things stand he can talk to Atletico, agree to Chelsea's two-year contract offer with the option of a third year, or see out his current one which expires in 2025 while waiting to see if any other clubs come in for him either this summer or January.

Maresca: I have no doubts about this team's progress

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca to the club's official website:

"I have no doubts about the progress this team is making in this moment. Mistakes are part of the process.

"I have known City for many years and even in friendly games, they don’t concede possession to the opposition, don’t concede many chances and they have long [spells of] possession.

"Thinking about the first half, I don’t remember them making six or seven passes in a row, so that was good from us off the ball.

"On the ball, we had many long [spells of] possession, some good chances and – I don’t know but I think – we had about 60 per cent possession in the first half.

"It doesn’t matter that it was a friendly game and they didn’t have six or seven of their starting players missing, this is the analysis of this moment.

"In any game, if you concede two goals [early on], it is not good.

"It was a very strange game to be honest. I planned the game and I think the plan was good in terms of the way we wanted to attack and the way we wanted to defend.

"Today we tried something different, instead of having the full-back inside, we maintained more or less the same structure with Malo playing higher and Kiernan going inside.

"For sure, we don’t like to lose games but in this moment, the main focus for me is to see different things and to try to be ready for the official games at the beginning of the season."

Gallagher told he will only be Chelsea squad player under Maresca

Latest from Sky Sports News' chief reporter Kaveh Solhekol:

Conor Gallagher has been told he will be a squad player under Enzo Maresca's possession-heavy style of play at Chelsea - but the midfielder remains open to agreeing a new long-term contract with his boyhood club.

Gallagher turned down a new two-year contract offer from Chelsea on Wednesday, with this latest deal - made up of two years plus the option of another - following another extension offer he rejected in June.

The salary Chelsea have offered him is comparable to the highest earners in their midfield and is believed to be comparable to other salary offers he has received.

Chelsea have now agreed terms with Atletico Madrid on a £34m transfer and Gallagher is interested in a move to Spain, with his current Blues deal set to expire next summer. Right now, Gallagher is considering all his options.

Atletico have given Gallagher until the end of the weekend to decide if he wants to move there.

Chelsea do not want the England international to run down his contract and leave on a free next summer.

The Blues do not want a repeat of the Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christiansen situations when both players left on free transfers.

Gallagher is due to train at Cobham from Monday with Enzo Maresca's first-team squad in the USA until Wednesday.
