How Chelsea Women Have Lined Up Recently

After barely rotating to start the season Sonia Bompastor sprung a surprise against Twente with an almost entirely new starting eleven. Hannah Hampton has been the main goalkeeper but Zecira Musovic now has two starts to her name in the Champions League. In the back line the central duties are split between Kadeisha Buchanan, Millie Bright, and Nathalie Bjorn with Maelys Mpome making substitute appearances. At right back Lucy Bronze is first-choice ahead of Eve Perisset.

At left-back Ashley Lawrence was initially the starter but she’s been replaced by Sandy Baltimore for the past few league outings. This is all likely a stop-gap as the team awaits the return of Niamh Charles.

In midfield the deepest options have usually been Wieke Kaptein and Sjoeke Nusken as Erin Cuthbert returns to fitness. Kaptein starting in midweek could indicate she will be missing out on this one. Oriane Jean-Francois also started against Twente and featured as the deepest midfielder there.

Maika Hamano and Guro Reiten are the attacking midfield options with Lauren James and Baltimore splitting the left wing while Johanna Rytting Kaneryd keeps a firm lock on her spot on the right. Mayra Ramirez and Aggie Beever-Jones have split striker duties so far.

Chelsea Women Recent Form and Tactics

Bompastor uses a fluid 4-3-3/4-2-3-1 with a lot of movement between players like James being free to move around the attacking line and the left-back almost being a wing-back and playing very high. In midweek, there was a very attacking variant in a 4-1-4-1 with Jean-Francois the only midfielder staying deep while Hamano played super close to Beever-Jones AND the full-backs pushed up. At times it was a 2-1-everyone else with a focus on breaking down the opposition through the wide areas.

The French coach has got off to an unbeaten start with the Blues, getting through pre-season without a loss and then taking that into the regular season where she’s won every outing so far. The attack looks absolutely menacing only failing to net multiple times in a game once so far. Defensively they will be hoping to tighten things up at the back after a run of three fixtures without a clean sheet.

Chelsea Injuries to Consider

With the close proximity to the Twente match there won’t be any update provided on the health of James who was pulled from the lineup at the last minute on Thursday. Bompastor has noted that the attacker had a foot issue which caused the change. She could be sidelined along with Charles, Sam Kerr, Aniek Nouwen, Mia Fishel, and Sophie Ingle.

Those who started against Twente are likely to be benched here to rest which would reinstate most of the regular eleven, the only question is what happens on the left without James.
