Ange Postecoglou's time at Tottenham Hotspur may be coming to an imminent end, according to David Ornstein - with the esteemed journalist stating that the Australian boss coming up with 'excuses and mitigations' as a reason for their poor form simply 'won't wash' with the club's hierarchy.
Spurs lost yet again on Sunday afternoon, recording their 17th Premier League loss in just 32 games so far this season - which is their most in a single league campaign since the 2003-04 campaign, and their fourth-worst in the competition's history overall, which could become worse given there are six games left.
Ornstein: Postecoglou Excuses 'Won't Wash' with Tottenham Chiefs
The Australian boss is severely under the cosh after a poor campaign
There is no doubting that injuries did hamper Tottenham's campaign, with their central defensive contingent becoming decimated by time on the sidelines - as well as full-back Destiny Udogie and goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, in a period which saw Tottenham win just one Premier League game from 11 attempts through the early stages of the new year.
Postecoglou has the chance to save his skin in the Europa League by winning the tournament, which would mean silverware for the first time in 17 years in north London, as well as qualification for the Champions League.
But if he fails to do so, Ornstein believes that with players not improving under his leadership, Postecoglou's 'excuses' throughout the campaign could come back to haunt him, with the hierarchy potentially seeing through that to give him the boot. He said on NBC Sports:
"Players are not improving, and I think that's a really key issue. Also, they feel at Tottenham that the squad is so much better than how they are performing, and that Ange Postecoglou is not getting the best out of them. There have been excuses and mitigations, like injuries. He's been pointing to moles in the dressing room.
"But I just don't think that is going to wash. And the hierarchy at Tottenham may be looking to alternatives."
Tottenham have been in poor form throughout the season, losing their League Cup semi-final second leg vs Liverpool to end any idea of a trip to Wembley, whilst they crashed out of the FA Cup early to Aston Villa.
GIVEMESPORT Key Statistic: Ange Postecoglou has won 43 of his 91 games in charge of Tottenham Hotspur.
And if they don't progress against Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League on Thursday evening after a 1-1 home draw in the first leg, the writing could be on the wall for the former Celtic boss.
