Tottenham Hotspur’s struggles continued with their trip to the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday night. They lost 2-1 to rivals Arsenal despite going 1-0 up thanks to a goal from Heung-Min Son.
A Dominic Solanke own goal and a superb finish by Leandro Trossard left Ange Postecoglou winless for his firth league match in a row. Spurs now sit 14th in the Premier League table, eight points above the relegation zone. Injuries have been a common theme for the Tottenham boss this season, with both Micky van de Ven, and Cristian Romero spending extended periods on the side lines. Furthermore, midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur is also out, and so is goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario.
Former Premier League midfielder Petit critical of Postecoglou’s recent approach
Petit spoke on TalkSport after the North London derby, in which Tottenham struggled to gain any momentum since they scored the opener in the 25th minute. The former Arsenal midfielder believes that Postecoglou can only use injury as an excuse for so long, and said that during the game against Arsenal, his players looked clueless.
He said: “I’m not impressed at all by the way they play. I have no idea what Postecoglou wants to do with his players on the pitch, and which system he wants to play. So yesterday, I had a feeling that some players were lost on the pitch without confidence, you know. And if I take, for example, a Son or Maddison, when he came on in the second half, they had no idea what to do when they had the ball. You know, no link between the players. I mean, no character, no personality, things like this.
“So I think, okay, you got many players injured, especially in defence. That's an excuse. But is it an excuse that runs for weeks and weeks? For me, it doesn't work like that. You know, something has to change. Good Managers, great managers, you know, sometimes adapt themselves, and I don't see that coming.”
How does Postecoglou rank in the Premier League sack race?
The Tottenham manager has been under considerable pressure for several weeks now amid his side’s poor run of form throughout Autumn and Winter. Being 14th in the table, and nowhere near the European places, there has to be the though in the back of his mind of his future at the club.
According to the latest odds , Postecoglou is the favourite Premier League manager to face the sack as things stand. It would make him the seventh manager to be sacked this season. Most recently, Sean Dyche was sacked from the Everton job just a day after West Ham sacked Julen Lopetegui. He was replaced by Graham Potter.
Southampton manager Ivan Juric is the second favourite to get sacked despite an encouraging but ultimately fruitless display against Manchester United. Leicester City boss Ruud van Nistelrooy is the third favourite, with his side languishing in the relegation places.
