Tottenham Hotspur could sell club captain Son Heung-min this summer to fund a swoop for Crystal Palace forward Eberechi Eze as Ange Postecoglou looks to plan for the long term future in North London.

The Aussie has maintained the backing of the board despite a season which has been nothing short of disastrous in places. Spurs sit 12th in the top flight and risk a first bottom half finish since 2008.

Nonetheless, Postecoglou looks secure in his role and will spend the summer improving a squad that has been riddled with injuries this term. One player that Spurs have been linked with is Crystal Palace winger Eze and TBR Football now reports how the transfer swoop could be a possibility.

Spurs ‘could be ready’ to sell Son Heung-min

The outlet claims that Tottenham Hotspur 'could be ready' to part ways with captain Son as they look for a ruthless summer window to avoid another underwhelming Premier League season. Eze is a 'top target' according to the report, with Manchester City, Liverpool and Arsenal all also monitoring the Eagles man.

TBR claims that Spurs are 'front of the queue' and have already started work on recruiting the player, who has a release clause in excess of £60 million in his contract. Son was signed by Spurs in 2015 for £22 million and has gone on to become a club legend.

The South Korea international has scored 172 goals for the club but managed just 10 this season. Now 32 years old, the 26-year-old Eze could be seen as the preferred option for the next era of football at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

What has caused drop in Son form?

Speaking on the latest Tottenham Hotspur podcast, NationalWorld's James Trembath gave his verdict on Son's loss of form this term. He said: "You'd say on current form that Heung-min Son needs a bit of a break, it's a bit of a mystery in terms of his form. There's the obvious fact of the hamstring injury earlier in the season. He scored a couple of goals when he came back against West Ham but then got injured again. Maybe he's carrying a knock?

"You've got to look at the amount of football he plays as well and the jet-setting back over to Korea for the international breaks over a number of years and that really does take its toll on the legs. Maybe that's a factor.

"You've also got to look at his confidence as well. He's missed big chances and just looks devoid of confidence. Whether the leadership is just weighing a little bit heavy on him as well, could that be a factor?

"There's a number of things that it could be. There's no doubting the fact that he's still a world class player - he's shown that in flashes, that he still has all the ability - he can go past a player and has two great feet but we're just missing that explosive Son. The Son that used to cut in from the left hand side and smash the ball into the top corner with his right foot. It just seems to have dropped off ever so slightly."

Despite reports of interest from Spurs, Liverpool and Arsenal, Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish admitted that he was shocked over the lack of serious bids for the England international last summer. He said: "I was really worried from a club point of view of losing Michael and Ebbs in the same window and we didn't have in Ebbs the interest that I thought we would have. I was astounded. Genuinely astounded. I mean, the guy's just an outstanding footballer, an outstanding person."

In other news, Tottenham Hotspur are ‘willing’ to offer £62 million for a midfielder with 19 appearances for a title challenging League One side this term.
