Harry Kewell was a part of the Melbourne Victory side that now-Tottenham Hotspur boss Ange Postecoglou managed.
But sadly for Kewell, his time under Postecoglou was promptly cut short as the Spurs tactician decide to release him in an attempt to rebuild his squad.
Ange Postecoglou has always had a clear idea on how he likes his teams to play football and the former Liverpool winger seemingly did not fit into his plans.
Harry Kewell is a manager now himself and most recently, he took over Postecoglou’s former club Yokohama F. Marinos.
Harry Kewell hopes Tottenham don’t sack Ange Postecoglou
Kewell initially provided an insight into the freedom that Ange Postecoglou hands to his players and how much he loves his fellow Australian’s attacking style of play.
While Harry Kewell admitted that Postecoglou’s approach to the game demands his players to give it their all, he is of the belief that Tottenham should stick with him instead of sacking the 59-year-old.
Kewell lauded Ange Postecoglou on Sky Sports: “He’s different, he’s different. But the fact that he allows you to go out and express yourself, I mean, there were times when you’d be at training and you’d stop it and he’d be like, ‘No, let them figure it out’ because that’s what players do and I love the way that he coached and I watch him now at Spurs now and I just think the way he plays the game, I loved. Just full out attack and I would’ve loved to have played for him if I was 23.”
“I would have signed up straightaway knowing that all I can do is attack. The way that I saw him work up in Scotland, I just thought, wow, that’s something I can learn throughout my coaching career to be able to manipulate certain things in that way and I think he gives you the freedom. But that comes with a consequence because he wants that high press, the high energy, the high work rate and again, that’s the exciting thing.”
Darren Bent advised Tottenham to keep Ange Postecoglou and show the patience in him that Arsenal did during their rocky spell under Mikel Arteta — a notion Harry Kewell wholeheartedly agrees with as well as he believes he could similar transform the Lilywhites’ fortunes.
“I really hope so because it’s shown even if you look at the rivals, with Arsenal and I think Mikel has done fantastic and he started off, even though he won the trophy [FA Cup], he started off with a bit of a poor run and words were questioned and people were talking, no, he’s not good enough. But he was allowed that time and now, he’s got a great squad, he’s been able to fulfil that and now he’s pushing for titles.”
“I predict the same for Ange. He’s proven, he’s got a track record of winning stuff and if he’s given time, he will be able to bring his players in and he will be able to really cement the ideas into what he wants, into that team and be able to progress forward.”
Ange Postecoglou’s chances of being sacked by Tottenham
Tim Sherwood predicted Europa League success for Postecoglou and went on to make the bold claim that a statue will be build to honour him.
However, Tottenham could sack Postecoglou even if he does bring European success to them at the end of the season.
While Harry Kewell would perhaps be gutted to see Tottenham part ways with Ange Postecoglou, the belief within the club is no longer “unwavering” in his favour.
