Tottenham Hotspur are keen to add an attacker on transfer deadline day as they continue to battle ongoing injury struggles.
Dominic Solanke, Brennan Johnson and Timo Werner are all out injured currently, and so Ange Postecoglou will want to sign reinforcements with the transfer deadline looming at 11pm.
Spurs won their first league game in eight matches on Sunday as they beat Brentford 2-0 at the Gtech Community Stadium. Postecoglou’s side kept their first clean sheet in the Premier League since their 5-0 win against Southampton in December.
Despite the result, they don’t have long to prepare for their next game which comes against Liverpool on Thursday in a Carabao Cup semi-final second leg. Postecoglou’s side are 1-0 up on aggregate. The Spurs boss will hope to have at least one more player through the door before then.
Tottenham and Liverpool target “not leaving” Lyon this month
Tottenham have been linked to Lyon attacker Rayan Cherki, who has impressed in Ligue 1 this season. The 21-year-old has scored five goals and contributed nine assists for the French side this year. Last week Caught Offside reported that Spurs, along with Manchester United and Liverpool were ‘monitoring’ the player’s situation at Lyon.
However, it looks as though they won’t be able to make a late move for him in the winter transfer window, as Lyon President John Textor has denied that he will leave, despite recent interest from Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund.
Fabrizio Romano confirmed the news on X: “Olympique Lyon president John Textor: ‘Rayan Cherki to Borussia Dortmund? No chance’. ‘He’s NOT leaving.’”
Cherki is valued at around £25m, and has already made three appearances for the France national team. He can play both as a winger and an attacking midfielder, versatility that Spurs could do with in attacking areas. He was linked with a move to Fulham in the summer transfer window. Given that Textor has denied a move to Dortmund, it looks almost impossible that any three of the Premier League sides will be able to land the 21-year-old.
Spurs turn attention to £31m Aston Villa attacker
As it looks like Tottenham won’t be able to make a late move for Cherki, they have reportedly identified Aston Villa winger Leon Bailey as a potential alternative. According to new reports, Spurs have asked Villa about Bailey’s availability. The Jamaica international has made 20 Premier League appearances for Unai Emery’s side this season, scoring one goal and two assists.
Villa may be less reluctant to sell Bailey now following their completed deal to land Marcus Rashford from Manchester United on a loan deal with a £40m option to buy in the summer.
Rashford was confirmed as a Villa player on Sunday, and will now look to re-ignite his career after falling out of favour with Ruben Amorim at Manchester United this season. With Rashford joining at Villa Park, Bailey will face more competition for a starting XI spot, meaning he could be more keen on moving to Spurs in order to get regular first-team football.
