The Manchester derby stakes aren't as they were...

Sky Sports' Sam Blitz:

"This is a Manchester derby like no other, at least for quite some time.

"Normally this game is tinged with title race context. Neither of these teams are anywhere near the standards set by Liverpool, especially hosts Manchester United.

"Ruben Amorim's Old Trafford struggles put Man City as favourites - but it's worth remembering that United's new head coach has beaten Pep Guardiola twice this season, including the reverse fixture in December.

"Can City get revenge? Are Man Utd about to prove a point? Maybe the lack of context in this game makes it ideal. Pure bragging rights, nothing else."

Hello and welcome!

Manchester has not flourished in the Premier League like we're used to seeing has it?

These two Manchester clubs have a combined 1.47 points per game in the Premier League this season – it's their worst collective performance in any league season since 1989.

It makes this meeting a rather strange one in that we're at the business end of the season and there's no Premier League title to play for these two. Yet, this is still a derby. Man City have a job to do to make the top five and Man Utd are still trying to find rhythm and balance under Ruben Amorim.

Stay with us for all the fun...

Tierney on VAR for Manchester derby

Paul Tierney has been named as the VAR official for the Manchester derby.

The referee was also on VAR duty for a feisty Merseyside derby on Wednesday evening, when his performance came under scrutiny.

James Tarkowski avoided a red card after a poor tackle on Alexis Mac Allister. On-field referee Sam Barrott did book the Everton defender, which was reviewed by Tierney on VAR.

However, he did not deem the on-field decision as a clear and obvious error. PGMOL acknowledged on Thursday that Tarkowski should have been sent off, Sky Sports News understands.

The on-field referee for the Manchester derby will be John Brooks, assisted by Simon Bennett and Dan Robathan.Tony Harrington is the fourth official, while Tierney will be joined by Tim Wood as the assistant VAR.

Early Man Utd team news

Kobbie Mainoo is potentially back for Manchester United after returning to training.

But the midfielder cannot play a full game after nearly two months out.

Matthijs De Ligt picked up an issue at Nottingham Forest and is being assessed, while the rest of the squad is fine.

Analysis: Why De Bruyne departs a Premier League great

Sky Sports' Adam Bate:

The news that this will be the final season for Kevin De Bruyne as a Manchester City player does not come as a shock. But it is still a source of sadness. The sight of De Bruyne at his very best was among the most thrilling for any fan of football.

The praise lavished on him will be as great as it is deserved. City are sure to honour him in these coming months. Opposition supporters may well do the same as he embarks on his farewell tour. Most will appreciate that he is among the Premier League's greats.

De Bruyne to leave Man City

Kevin De Bruyne has announced he is leaving Manchester City at the end of the season.

The club's captain said "these will be my final months as a Manchester City player" in a post on social media.

De Bruyne, whose deal expires in the summer, signed for City in 2015 from Wolfsburg for a fee of £54.5m, scoring 106 goals in 413 matches in a trophy-laden decade at the club.

The 33-year-old will go down as one of the Premier League's greatest players after winning six Premier League titles, two FA Cups, five Carabao Cups and the Champions League in an unprecedented period of success for City.

De Bruyne was also part of Pep Guardiola's treble-winning team in 2022/23.

Guardiola described it as a sad day to see De Bruyne's exit confirmed and said he "is one of the greatest" this country has ever seen.

Amorim: Man Utd in a rush to improve

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim says he is "in a rush" for his team to improve and challenge again for Premier League titles.

The Portuguese was quizzed on the topic ahead of facing reigning league champions Manchester City in Sunday's Manchester derby, live on Sky Sports.

Media reports in February said the club's hierarchy had unveiled a plan named 'Mission 21', which is aimed at helping the club win their 21st league title by 2028.

But Amorim is hoping for success before then and is already hoping to see marked improvements by next season, which begins in just over four months.

He told a pre-match press conference: "I understand, but I'm not naïve. I don't want to think we need a lot of years to be competitive. I can't think like that, I cannot manage that, it's not in me. That's why I'm putting pressure on myself."

Amorim: I'm more focused on Man Utd problems - not Man City's

Man Utd head coach Ruben Amorim when asked if Man City have recovered from a spell of poor form earlier this season:

"I’m more focused on our problems. We have bigger problems than Man City.

"They had that run in that moment but they improved. They can play in different ways and it’s hard to understand and think how they are going to face us.

"They have maybe the best coach in the world, they have top players so it will be a difficult match. But I’m so focused on improving our team, I’m not focused on the improvements of Man City."

On whether his win at the Etihad was one of his best moments at Man Utd so far: "I don’t know, it’s hard to [say]. Sometimes, I’m really happy with the small things, not with the big things.

"Here and at other clubs, I don’t see one win as a special moment. A special moment is to be really competitive to win titles. Even in the third division, you can win against the best team in the country."

Amorim: De Bruyne improved the Premier League

Man Utd head coach Ruben Amorim:

"That is easy – he is one of the best midfielders in the Premier League. The time passes to everyone so it’s a natural thing. He improved the league, he was on the wrong side of Manchester.

"I wish him good luck. It was a pleasure to see him in Portugal a lot of times. I hope he enjoys the rest of his like."
