Tottenham have reportedly fallen behind in the battle to sign an in-form striker this summer. Spurs are going to need to invest significantly in their squad this summer if they want to avoid another forgettable season.

Ange Postecoglou is still fighting for his job at this stage, and his best route to saving it will surely be to win the Europa League and secure Champions League qualification in doing so, but the competition is notoriously difficult to win, and Spurs don’t look consistent enough to pull it off, even having booked a place in the quarter-finals.

Whether they can pull it off or not is yet to be determined, but whoever is in charge, Daniel Levy is going to have to back significantly, with Tottenham in need of more depth and quality if they are going to realistically compete for Champions League qualification, which is where they want to be.

The attack is one of the areas that needs more quality, and we could yet see Richarlison move on this summer, with the Brazilian having struggled with injury issues this season, like many. Tottenham have had to rely significantly on Dominic Solanke, and the consensus is that they will need another striker to comete with the Englishman.

One of the players who has been linked recently is Fiorentina’s Moise Kean, who has been in fine form in Serie A. Kean previously struggled with Everton, but he has found his feet in Florence since arriving from Juventus in 2024, scoring 17 goals in 28 league appearances so far. The Italy international is second in the Serie A scoring charts this season, while he also has seven goals in 21 games for his nation.

Tottenham fall behind in Kean race

According to Calciomercato, Fiorentina may be willing to cash in on their star striker this summer, poised to evaluate any and all offers to see whether a deal would suit them. But it’s also reported that the Italian side are looking to agree a new deal with Kean that would remove or increase his current release clause, which stands at around £44.3million.

In the meantime, it’s claimed Newcastle United have made ‘direct contact’ with Kean as they weigh up replacing number two striker Callum Wilson, who is out of contract this summer. The Magpies have also seen starting striker Alexander Isak linked with a move away, but they won’t be planning to sell him unless he pushes for an exit.

It remains to be seen how much Fiorentina will ask for to sell Kean, but Tottenham won’t need reminding that even at the full release clause, he is one of the few in-form strikers who is valued at below £50million, and given their needs across the squad, they should be moving quickly when it comes to relatively affordable strikers.

Then again, it doesn’t mean Kean is their ideal target, and they are likely to have other irons in the fire, and others that they may be prioritising ahead of the summer transfer window.
