Tottenham have lost their No.1 Guglielmo Vicario for months following ankle surgery
Tottenham Hotspur have had an underwhelming start to the season. They have produced a few incredible performances but have also suffered some shocking defeats.
The Lilywhites’ latest loss came at the hands of Bournemouth, who were excellent at home on Thursday evening. Andoni Iraola’s side should have scored more, thanks to a combination of wasteful finishing and Fraser Forster’s incredible saves.
Forster, deputising for the long-term injured Guglielmo Vicario, made a string of saves to keep Spurs in the game for the second match running. However, the veteran glovesman was lucky to get away with a sloppy pass after Evanilson’s goal was ruled out for offside. Despite warning signs, he continued to play out from the back causing panic within the Tottenham team.

Losing your first-choice goalkeeper in Vicario is a big blow and that has certainly affected Ange Postecoglou’s team dynamics. However, the Spurs gaffer has played down the idea of entering the market for a new goalkeeper to replace the injured Vicario. Last month, the 59-year-old suggested he was happy to play Forster when asked about the possibility of a new face coming in.
Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose owner John Wenham Football has urged Spurs to sign a new goalkeeper in the New Year. Forster is now the stand-by shot-stopper until Vicario heals fully, but Wenham has advised the North London club to strengthen their goalkeeping unit next month even if it means paying an extra £2m to have the new signing on board on January 1.

The club are yet to put out a timeframe for Vicario’s return, and going by the fact that he had surgery on a fractured ankle, he is certain to spend months on the sidelines. Thus, it would make sense for Tottenham to sign a new shot-stopper when the transfer window reopens in January.
Forster may have performed extremely well in the past three games but he is 36 and out of contract at the end of the season (Transfermarkt). This clearly demonstrates the ex-England international will not be at the club for long to compete with Vicario when he returns.

Signing a quality goalkeeper would not only allow the Lilywhites to address a key position, but also keep Vicario on his toes. Vicario has been exposed by teams time and again from set-plays, so maybe the arrival of a new glovesman gives him the kind of push required to take his game to the next level.
