Manchester United have been working on deals on deadline day but have remained realistic in their expectations of what they can achieve in the final hours of the window.

United lost 2-0 to Crystal Palace on Sunday afternoon as the visitors scored twice in the second half to condemn the Red Devils to their fourth home defeat in 11 Premier League games. Ruben Amorim’s need for a striker was highlighted as Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee were both dropped from the starting line-up.

“This window is always really, really difficult and we don't want to make the mistakes of the past,” warned head coach Ruben Amorim last week. “We have to also understand the situation of the club. A lot of things are changing so we have to be careful in this type of window. You guys know the situation of the club at the moment, so it's nothing new.”

Tel move takes major twist

One player United have pursued is Bayern Munich striker Mathys Tel. The 19-year-old wants to leave the Bundesliga giants due to a lack of game-time and his preference has been to move to Old Trafford. According to talkSPORT, the Red Devils have had two loan offers rebuffed as Bayern would prefer a permanent deal

Arsenal and Tottenham were also interested in the player. Spurs had agreed a £50.2m with Bayern for Tel last week, with Daniel Levy travelling to Germany aiming to sew up an agreement. However, Tel rejected a move to North London with reports on Monday morning claiming Arsenal were holding talks with Bayern over the player.

Now in major twist, Tel is on his way to Spurs after a change of heart. That is according to Sky Sports Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg who claims the Frenchman now wants to join Tottenham in a blow to United and Arsenal. Earlier on Monday, Tel and his agent were spotted on a private jet amid speculation of where he was heading.

Tottenham have already agreed deal with Bayern

Last week, L’Equipe claimed Bayern had agreed a deal worth €60 million (£50.2m) to sell Tel to Tottenham. At the time, it was claimed by the Daily Mail that Tel was waiting to see if any of the other interested clubs would make a move for him before committing to Spurs.

In another twist, despite a permanent deal being previously agreed, Fabrizio Romano reports that Tel’s move to North London is now a loan with no option to buy. United would have liked to sell Marcus Rashford to help raise funds for a new attacker but the forward has agreed a loan move to Premier League rivals Aston Villa.

Speaking about Rashford’s departure, Amorim said on Sunday before the move was confirmed: “When you loan a player, and I don’t know, I think it’s not official, when you loan a player, you expect him to play and to improve, so it’s nothing humiliating there. I understand the question but I’m just focused on my players, that’s all. So when the window closes, I will be really focused on just our team and to improve our team."
