Tottenham could lose one of their best defenders this summer, according to one report. Ange Postecoglou has had a nightmare season with Spurs, struggling to get the best out of his team amid a seemingly never-ending stream of injuries.
A defensive injury crisis crippled the first half of Tottenham’s campaign, and just as the defensive issues cleared up, a number of injuries at the top end of the pitch surfaced. Heading into Sunday’s Premier League clash with Manchester United. things are finally clearing up at both ends, with Postecoglou now looking forward to a run of games with a squad that has some depth.
One of the players Tottenham have had to go without for much of this season is centre-back Micky van de Ven, who is undoubtedly one of the club’s best players. The centre-back is now finally close to returning to action, but upon his return, Football Insider are reporting that Liverpool are expressing an interest in the pacey defender ahead of the summer.
It’s reported that the Reds are ‘very keen’ on landing van de Ven as they prepare to likely lose Joe Gomez, while Virgil van Dijk’s contract situation is still not clear. van de Ven is under contract until 2029 for Spurs, and it would take a huge fee for the 23-year-old to be sold, and especially to a Premier League rival.
Liverpool boss Arne Slot is said to be a big fan of van de Ven’s, and it looks as though he will look to strengthen his back-line this summer, leaving Spurs sitting uncomfortably. The one issue with van de Ven is his injury history, with the defender having missed 28 games this season through injury across all competitions. Hamstring injuries have been an issue for the defender.
In the meantime, van de Ven is expected to return in the coming week, with Postecoglou saying on Friday: "Micky, Cuti (Romero) and Dom (Solanke), again, we’re looking at the next two or three weeks for them. They’re going well.”
