Manchester United academy graduate Angel Gomes could be on his way back to England amid interest from Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur.

The 24-year-old rejected a new contract at Old Trafford back in 2020 and subsequently left the club as a free agent. He joined United at the age of six and was the first player born in the 2000s to play for the club, as he came on as a substitute for Wayne Rooney in the last game of the 2016-17 season.

After leaving United, he found a new home with Ligue 1 club Lille and has gone from strength to strength in France. He was called-up to the England senior squad for the first time last year and now has four caps after spending a couple of years in the England Under-21 set-up. Gomes is from London and is reportedly being looked at by Spurs. The central midfielder is out of contract at Lille this summer and as things stand he looks poised to be available as a free agent come the end of the season.

Spurs could sign Gomes in January

With Gomes’ yet to sign a new deal, Lille could offer to sell him for a cut-price deal in January rather than let him leave for nothing in six months. According to journalist Dean Jones, there has been suggestions that Tottenham might sign the player this month with there being no signs of progress on a new deal in France.

He said via TBR Football: “They’re [Tottenham] also looking at central midfielders and I don’t think it’s going to be anyone earth-shattering. They’ve looked at Angel Gomes, who obviously becomes a free agent in the summer. I think primarily that that’s what they’re trying to trigger at the moment just to get him as that free agent to come in the summer. But I know there’s also been some inclination as to like, but what about now? What about if he came now? Because obviously, he wouldn’t cost that much to get in now. They’ve also looked at a few others.”

Gomes opens up on United departure

Speaking about his decision to leave United despite being offered a new deal, Gomes insisted he left "better myself as a player and person". While on England duty, he said: "When I left [Manchester United] it was more the idea to better myself as a player and person. Being on the journey I went through I knew eventually I'd be able to create a pathway to be in this position I'm in now.

"It was difficult leaving the club I was in since six and heading into the unknown really for me personally. From then it's been an uphill trajectory, but also with a lot of difficulties and difficult moments going through it, but being in this position now makes it all worth it."

Back in September, it was reported by Give Me Sport that Gomes was also attracting interest from his former club as well as Newcastle United. However, Dan Ashworth was the Red Devils sporting director amid the reports of interest in Gomes while Erik ten Hag was manager meaning the club’s plans might well have shifted towards other targets.
