Tottenham Hotspur have much more reason to be positive in recent weeks after they have won three Premier League games in a row.
Ange Postecoglou’s side are on the verge of the top half of the Premier League table, and won 4-1 against Ipswich in their last match over the weekend. However, it has still been a disappointing season under Postecoglou with their only hope of silverware coming in the Europa League.
They have just four contracts due to expire in June, with Fraser Forster, Sergio Reguilon, Ben Davies and Alfie Whiteman set to leave the club as things stand. However, in 2026, key player Heung-Min Son’s contract is due to expire, meaning Spurs will have to make a decision on whether to extend his deal.
Tottenham tipped to extend Son’s contract
Despite his faltering form this season, it has been suggested that Spurs are set to keep Son around for next campaign at least. The South Korean attacker has been at the club since 2015, and has become a club legend, scoring 172 goals for Tottenham in the 10 years that he has spent in North London.
According to former Tottenham scout Mick Brown, the club wants to keep Son around, despite the fact that his form in the Premier League this season has declined. He told Football Insider: “I think they want to keep him and I expect them to stick with him.
“But there are certainly question marks about his level of performance. He doesn’t look like the Son we’ve seen in the past. So yes, I think they’ll stick with him because at the end of the day he’s their captain and he’s been an important player for them. But long-term I’m not convinced he’ll be so much of a key player in this side.”
Spurs could sign Mathys Tel as long-term Son replacement
Because Son is 32 years old, Tottenham won’t be expected to sign him to a long-term contract extension if they do sign a new deal with the attacker, and so will need to find a replacement for the future.
They signed Bayern Munich attacker Mathys Tel on loan in the January transfer window until the end of the season, but his deal has an option to buy permanently for a fee of £45 million.
So far, the 19-year-old has made four appearances for Spurs, scoring one goal. If he continues to develop into a top-class striker, Tel could become an option for a long-term replacement for Son in the coming years.
Tel can play in a similar role to Son, who has featured for Spurs both on the wings and as a striker. He is both someone who can score and assist, but will need to make sure he shows his worth in the remainder of the season if the Frenchman wants to make his move to Tottenham a permanent one.
