Tottenham Hotspur are planning to hand Rodrigo Bentancur a new deal
Tottenham Hotspur have started laying the brickwork for the summer transfer window after enduring a troubled 2024/25 season.
In Antonin Kinsky, Mathys Tel and Kevin Danso, the Lilywhites made three exciting signings during the January transfer window and the N17 chiefs want to build on that by adding more talents with potential to Ange Postecoglou’s roster.
In addition to bringing in new faces to the squad, the Spurs bosses also have to sort out the contractual situation of some players entering the final year of their contracts this summer. As of now, the club have reportedly opened talks with Rodrigo Bentancur over a new deal.
Rodrigo Bentancur joined Tottenham from Juventus in January 2022. The Uruguayan international’s time at White Hart Lane has been disrupted by several serious injuries. The fitness problems have led to inconsistent displays, with the player failing to cement his place in the starting XI.
However, in recent weeks, the 26-year-old has emerged as a mainstay in Ange Postecoglou’s first XI. Thus, while at one point recently it appeared though Bentancur could be among the names on the chopping block, it now looks as if Postecoglou and Spurs are planning for the future with him.
Ex-Spurs scout Bryan King thinks the club could reward the central midfielder with a new contract worth £150,000-per-week. Should that happen, it could spell the end of road for Yves Bissouma.
Bentancur is a quality player who has performed well in Postecoglou’s system when fully fit. Him failing to reach the lofty expectations of the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium faithful is majorly down to the injuries he has suffered in the last couple of seasons. Slowly but steadily, the Uruguayan star is getting back to his peak fitness levels as evidenced by him nailing down a regular spot now in Big Ange’s XI.

That being said, the club would do a good job by giving Bentancur a wage bump of up to £125,000-a-week with bonuses on top of that. The Hotspur Way chiefs have to maintain the wage bill and must not overpay players under any circumstances, which might result in friction within the squad.
