Tottenham Hotspur are scrambling to bring a centre-back into the club on Deadline Day as the hours count down until the close of the January transfer window.
Ange Postecoglou has been short of options at the back this season due to injuries. Micky Van de Ven, Cristian Romero, Destiny Udogie and Ben Davies have all missed large chunks of the campaign with Radu Dragusin now set to be sidelined.
Rather than persist with fielding 18-year-old midfielder Archie Gray at the heart of defence, Spurs are determined to sign a centre-back today to help with the rest of the season. However, that deal is proving hard to do with clubs aware of the club's situation.
Tottenham Hotspur drop Chelsea pursuit
It has emerged this morning that Tottenham Hotspur had submitted a bid to Chelsea for Axel Disasi but that their London rivals had rejected that offer. Sky Sports now claim that the rejection has caused Spurs to end their interest in the player.
Disasi arrived at Stamford Bridge from Monaco for £38.5 million in 2023 but has become a squad player under Enzo Maresca this season. His arrival at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium would have been a coup, with the French international experienced in the Premier League and in European football.
After a huge performance against Manchester City last year, Jamie Carragher heaped praise on Disasi. He said: "I can't remember a better defensive performance this season from a central defender. You're coming away to Manchester City and playing against the best striker in the world. He was brilliant, man of the match, definitely the best player on the pitch.
"That was the type of performance you'd see from defenders 15 or 20 years ago, it was a throwback with backs against the wall and throwing himself against everything. Talking about Chelsea, that was a John Terry type performance and I can't five any more praise than that."
Tottenham Hotspur are also looking at a move for Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi, who has been readily linked with a transfer to Newcastle United and Manchester Untied in recent windows. Last summer, it was claimed that the South London club had a £65 million asking price for Guehi but weren't tempted by a £60 million bid received from the Magpies.
Crystal Palace reject Spurs bid
Transfer specialist David Ornstein this morning took to social media platform X and wrote: "Crystal Palace reject major bid from Tottenham Hotspur to sign Marc Guehi permanently. #THFC + other clubs expected to try again for 24yo England international in summer, when centre-back will have 12mnths left on #CPFC terms."
Crystal Palace are believed to have no intention of selling the England international, even with his contract ticking down, in another blow to Postecoglou and Tottenham Hotspur. Lens defender Kevin Danso now appears the most likely option for the club.
The 26-year-old was due to undergo a medical at Wolves on Sunday but the Austria international pulled out last minute, opening the door for a potential Spurs swoop. It is believed a £21 million fee has been agreed with Lens.
In other news, Chelsea are 'ready' to bid £58 million for a player as the star's agent 'tries to force' a transfer.
