Tottenham Hotspur narrowly missed out on the top four last time out. Can they return to the Champions League this season?

⚡My quick betting tip

Tottenham Hotspur to finish in the top four at 9/4 with BetVictor

⚽ Tottenham Hotspur last season overview

Tottenham Hotspur were the early pace-setters in the Premier League last term, as Ange Postecoglou very quickly got to grips with his new squad. Spurs sat at the summit of the standings after 10 games, but a 4-1 loss to Chelsea precipitated a dip in form. Within just three weeks, Tottenham had dropped down to fifth.

That is where they finished the campaign, missing out on the top four by two points. Postecoglou’s side had a terrible end to 2024/25, losing five of their last seven games to miss out on the final Champions League qualification spot to Aston Villa. Spurs, in short, shot themselves in the foot, but they did at least secure a place in the Europa League.

⚽ Tottenham Hotspur manager

It did not take long for Postecoglou to win over the Tottenham Hotspur faithful last time out. That was in part due to positive early results - what set of fans would not be happy with a table-topping team at the end of October? But Postecoglou’s attack-minded style of play was just as important to winning over a group of supporters that had grown tired of the dreary, defence-first football served up by Nuno Espirito Santo, Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte.

“I've tried to stay true to that my whole career, and what I'm really passionate about in the game is the joy and excitement it brings to supporters and people who love it,” he said last year. “That is the way I want my teams to play and that is the way I want players to play. From that perspective, it is sometimes not easy because you usually just get judged on one thing and that is winning games of football. But I've tried to sort of stay true to that core of why I love the game.”

⚽ Tottenham Hotspur transfers

Tottenham Hotspur splashed out £40m on Archie Gray, a talented teenage midfielder from Leeds United, while Lucas Bergvall has also arrived in north London. The headline signing so far, though, is Dominic Solanke, who will spearhead Postecoglou’s team this season. Kyle Walker-Peters has been linked with a return to his former club, while Spurs are also thought to be eyeing Ebere Eze of Crystal Palace.

Joe Rodon, Troy Parrott, Nile John and Yago Santiago have left the club, but none of those absentees will be keenly felt at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Postecoglou’s squad is stronger than it was last year.

⚽ Tottenham Hotspur objective for the season

Tottenham Hotspur grew accustomed to Champions League football during Mauricio Pochettino’s tenure, even reaching the final in 2019. But they have been in and out of the competition since then and will be targeting a return next season. To guarantee that, Spurs must finish in the top four, although fifth may prove to be enough depending on how well English clubs perform in continental competition.

Of course, the north Londoners are even more desperate for a first trophy since 2008. Spurs could do with a run deep into at least one of the FA Cup, EFL Cup or Europa League along with their Premier League objective. For those backing Tottenham to achieve success this season, placing bets on their matches through the best football betting sites could be a rewarding option.

⚽ Tottenham Hotspur strengths

Tottenham Hotspur can play some lovely football when they are in full flow. The club’s motto is “to dare is to do” and, with Postecoglou calling the shots, this Spurs side lives up to it. Tottenham take risks with and without the ball, but when everything clicks they are a joy to watch.

Spurs also had a strong record in the second half last season. Only Liverpool, Manchester City and Arsenal performed better after the break than Postecoglou’s side. Tottenham kept playing until the final whistle, helped by the confidence gleaned from having a clear identity and defined style of play.

With a demanding set of fixtures ahead, maintaining this resilience will be crucial as they navigate the challenges of the upcoming season.

⚽ Tottenham Hotspur weaknesses

Tottenham Hotspur had an unwelcome habit of going behind in games last term, particularly at home. Indeed, the visitors to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium scored the first goal in nine out of 19 matches. That led to some thrilling comebacks, but Spurs need to avoid giving their opponents a head-start so often.

They could also do with tightening up at the back. Spurs gave up 61 goals last time out - too many for a club that is aiming to be among the division’s leading quartet. Postecoglou’s side must become more defensively resolute.

💰 What do I bet on?

Tottenham Hotspur to finish in the top four at 9/4 with BetVictor. In their second season under Ange Postecoglou, Spurs can secure a place in the Champions League.
