Tottenham Hotspur have been handed a boost in their hopes of avoiding another humbling at the hands of Liverpool next week with the Reds set to be without defensive linchpin Joe Gomes for the Carabao Cup semi-final.
Ange Postecoglou's side once again welcome the Premier League leaders to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, just weeks after being embarrassed by Arne Slot's men in front of a home crowd in North London. The Reds romped to a 6-3 victory earlier this month and will no doubt hope for a similar scoreline in the first leg of the cup tie on Wednesday, January 8.
Spurs did put three past Liverpool in that fixture thanks to goals from James Maddison, Dejan Kulusevski and Dominic Solanke. Virgin van Dijk and Gomez started at the heart of defence for that fixture but Slot will not be able to call upon that pairing in the cup.
Liverpool handed injury blow ahead of Spurs
Gomez limped out of the Premier League meeting with West Ham on Sunday with a hamstring injury. The defender didn't make it past the first half before being replaced by Jarell Quansah.
Gomez was treated by physios and tried to carry on but was unable to do so. Speaking after the game, Slot confirmed that it could be a lengthy lay-off for the centre-back. He said: “If a player says he wants to stop he has to be changed.
“In a sprint, we all know it’s a hamstring and we all know it’s going to take a while before he’s back. I don’t know how long, but he will be out for quite a bit. These situations can happen in a season.”
Liverpool are hoping that Ibrahima Konate could be close to a return from a knee injury but the Frenchman has not played since the 3-2 victory over Southampton towards the end of November so his return will have to be managed carefully. Conor Bradley is another who has stepped up his recovery ahead of this weekend's visit of Manchester United before the trip to Spurs.
Arne Slot praise for ‘top professional’ Joe Gomez
Gomez has impressed when called upon this season by Slot. After the defender faced Brighton in November, when he was thrown into the action at half-time, the Liverpool manager said: “That says a lot about his mentality and it also says a lot about his quality, if you don’t play that much and you come in in a game where your team-mates were out-played for 45 minutes, that you can come in and play like this.
“It also says a lot about his mentality in recent weeks and months where didn’t play that much that he is now able, without playing a lot, to play 90 minutes on Wednesday and then put in a performance like this on Saturday.
“This is what people told me when I came in. Joe is a top, top, top professional who no matter what position he is in always gives his best for the team and for himself as well, and I think he got the reward for it because I think the fans loved what they saw. I definitely did.”
