Ange Postecoglou will be hoping for a quick turnaround this weekend after seeing his Tottenham side lose 1-0 to Chelsea despite having the ball in the net at one point on Thursday.
Pape Matar Sarr scored an equaliser for Spurs in the second half, but it was ruled out by VAR. It left Tottenham 14th in the Premier League table, with Postecoglou under considerable pressure.
They face a Southampton team who could be without up to three players according to the most recent injury updates. Whereas Tottenham’s injury news also has them potentially missing four players.
Tottenham’s current injury list
Spurs are expected to be without four players for the game against the Saints on Sunday. The first is Radu Dragusin, who has already been ruled out for the remainder of the season after undergoing surgery on his ACL.
The other three are looking at returns at some point in April. Dejan Kulusevski is set to miss the Southampton game, and Spurs’ Europa League tie against Eintract Frankfurt which comes next week - he is dealing with an ankle injury.
Defender Kevin Danso is also on a similar timeline with a hamstring injury. He is looking to come back later on in the month.
Finally, Richarlison is closest to a return from his injury. The striker has been recovering from a calf issue and is currently being assessed regarding his match fitness. He is unlikely for Sunday but could be available for the Europa League next week.
What has Ange Postecoglou said?
The Tottenham boss spoke on Danso and Kulusevski this week, as he hinted that they are doing well in recovery. He said on Wednesday: “Kevin and Deki are working hard still. They’re probably a couple of weeks away, but both are progressing well.”
He also spoke about Richarlison, saying that he is back in training, but he didn’t suggest whether or not he will be ready for the game against Southampton this weekend. Postecoglou said: “Richy is training with the group. Again, it's about when we reintroduce him to the matchday squad, but he's training with the main training group, which is positive.”
Impact on team selection and tactics
The four Tottenham players who are expected to miss the game against the Saints on Sunday have been out for some time, so Postecoglou will likely keep a similar formation to that of their last few games.
This was Spurs’ starting XI in their last game: Vicario, Udogie, Van de Ven, Romero, Spence, Maddison, Bentancur, Bergvall, Son, Odobert, Solanke
Southampton injury concerns
The Saints could be without three players. Will Smallbone looks set to miss the game with a groin injury. Manager Ivan Juric said: “Will is out, and the others are all fit. Hopefully, he will be better next week or at the end of this week.”
He has been ruled out of the Tottenham game. Ross Stewart and Juan Larios are doubts and are both currently being assessed due to having concerns regarding match fitness.
