Tottenham Hotspur are planning to tie Rodrigo Bentancur down to a new deal
Despite enjoying a solid January transfer window, Tottenham Hotspur have already started exploring options to add quality and depth to their squad in the summer.
The Lilywhites need to fortify almost every area of the pitch after a tough season. Following the arrivals of Lucas Bergvall and Archie Gray last summer, the midfield unit may appear stacked at this moment.
However, there are a couple of midfielders who will enter the final year of their contracts in June. And one of them is Rodrigo Bentancur.
The South American’s Tottenham career has been blighted by injury problems. A quality player, he has failed to live up to his high potential owing largely to fitness issues. The central midfielder missed six months of action during the 2023/24 season due to an anterior cruciate ligament injury.
He has already suffered many setbacks this season, missing four games as a result. In addition, Rodrigo Bentancur also served a seven-game domestic ban for off-field matters. Yet, the Daily Mail reports that Tottenham have opened talks with Bentancur over a potential new contract.
Having entered the final 16 months of his contract, there has been perhaps some uncertainty about the Uruguayan’s long-term future at White Hart Lane. However, the North Londoners are taking the required steps to quash any speculation surrounding his future by opening talks over a new deal.
The aforementioned report adds that the Hotspur Way bosses are keen to extend Bentancur’s deal due to the fact he is an ‘integral first-team player’ under Ange Postecoglou. Since completing his seven-game ban, the 27-year-old has been a regular fixture in Postecoglou’s first XI. He has made a total of 28 appearances this season thus far, contributing with two goals and an assist.
The Nueva Helvecia-born talent is just three shy of reaching 100 appearances for the North London club. Had it not been for so many injury problems, setbacks and lengthy suspension, the ex-Juventus man would have easily bypassed a century of appearances by now and inching closer towards 150.

Spurs have an exciting project that has been focused on buying, nurturing young talents and helping them realize their true potential. But it is very important to surround such talents with experienced and seasoned campaigners. This makes securing Bentancur’s future by tying him down to a new deal as quickly as possible extremely crucial.
That being said, it will be interesting to see whether the Uruguayan puts pen to paper or not.
