Tottenham want to sign AC Milan defender Fikayo Tomori in a surprise swap deal with Rodrigo Bentancur

Tottenham Hotspur did transfer business with AC Milan for Emerson Royal last summer. It was a successful move from the North Londoners, as Emerson was not part of Ange Postecoglou’s plans going forward.

Now, it looks like the two clubs could do business again for the second successive summer. According to a report from Italian outlet Spazio Milan, Tottenham are interested in signing AC Milan defender Fikayo Tomori and want to propose a swap deal with Rodrigo Bentancur.

Fikayo Tomori was heavily linked with a move to White Hart Lane during the January transfer window. In fact, Tottenham were in advanced negotiations and had even almost agreed a deal with AC Milan, only for the centre-back to snub the opportunity to return to the Premier League.

The England international has failed to cement his spot in the Milan XI this season. The change of coach midway through the season has not helped his cause either, and Tomori has now reached the ‘final stages’ of his time in Serie A after a ‘disappointing’ season, where he could say goodbye to Milan after joining from Chelsea five seasons ago.

The Rossoneri are set to miss out on a spot in next season’s Champions League, which could force them to sell some of their players to raise funds for their boss Sergio Conceicao. The Serie A giants are willing to cash in on Tomori and valued him at around €30m.

However, the San Siro-based outfit like Rodrigo Bentancur, whose contract at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium expires in the summer of 2026. The aforementioned report adds that Milan will want also want a transfer fee to go alongside the swap between Bentancur and Tomori.

Bentancur has only started in 19 Premier League games this season, scoring twice. The Uruguayan midfielder has been a reliable member of Big Ange’s squad. However, he is not indispensable, and with Spurs needing to strengthen other positions after a catastrophic season, it would not hurt much if Tottenham decides to cash in on Bentancur in the summer.

Tomori, in a refreshing update, could be available for a switch after his adventure in Italy. At 27, the Canada-born star is at a good age to come in and make a difference at the back for Spurs. He is a Premier League-proven commodity and could be a quality potential replacement for the Atletico Madrid-linked Cristian Romero.

That said, Tottenham must not hesitate to swap Bentancur with Tomori and add a nominal fee if Milan wants it attached to the deal.
