Tottenham are reportedly in advanced talks with Real Betis to expedite the signing of midfielder Johnny Cardoso, according to TBR Football.
The American international was part of the agreement tied to Giovani Lo Celso’s move to Betis earlier this summer. Spurs negotiated a £20.7m clause, giving them the option to secure Cardoso’s services.
While the initial plan was to revisit this in the next summer transfer window, Tottenham are now keen to bring the deal forward to January.
Cardoso has emerged as a standout performer for Betis this season, establishing himself as a reliable defensive midfielder.
The 23-year-old has made 19 appearances across all competitions, contributing a goal and an assist, underscoring his ability to influence play on both ends of the pitch.
Valued at €20 million, Cardoso’s potential has been evident in his performances, and his long-term contract with Betis, which runs until 2029, highlights his growing importance.
The midfielder’s career began at Internacional in Brazil, where he made his professional debut in 2019 during a 3–1 win over Atlético Mineiro.
His displays earned him a move to Betis in December 2023, where he signed a five-year deal. Cardoso made an immediate impact, debuting against Barcelona in January this year and showcasing his capacity to perform on a big stage.
For Tottenham, Cardoso presents an ideal solution to bolster their midfield. Operating naturally as a number 6, he could provide the defensive stability and balance that Ange Postecoglou’s side has been seeking. His ability to shield the defence while initiating attacks fits seamlessly into the team’s tactical needs.
With Tottenham enduring a demanding season, the signing of a player of Cardoso’s calibre could be instrumental in revitalising their midfield and enhancing their strategic options.
Fans will be eager to see if Spurs can finalise the deal this January and secure a player poised to make a significant impact.
