Tottenham Hotspur are in desperate need of a win when they travel to take on Eintracht Frankfurt in Germany. But what happened the last time the Lilywhites went visiting Frankfurt? Let’s find out.

For Tottenham Hotspur, all attention now turns to their Europa League tie against Eintracht Frankfurt.

The Lilywhites come into this clash off the back of a rather avoidable 4-2 defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers, where errors ultimately cost them dearly.

As for Frankfurt, they’ll be welcoming Spurs to Deutsche Bank Park fresh from a confident 3-0 win over relegation-threatened FC Heidenheim in the Bundesliga — a result that keeps their hopes of securing a top-four finish alive.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Eintracht Frankfurt: What happened the last time they met in Germany?

Of course, Thursday’s second-leg quarter-final Europa League encounter isn’t the first time these two sides will be locking horns in Germany, as Tottenham have played Frankfurt twice away from home in their history.

The most recent of those came during the 2022/23 UEFA Champions League group stage, with that clash ending in a goalless draw.

But if we go back further, to the away leg prior to that fixture, Frankfurt ran out 2-1 winners in the 1981/82 Cup Winners’ Cup — a tournament that has since evolved into the Europa League.

A repeat of either of those previous away ties won’t be enough for Tottenham this time, as nothing short of a win will do if they’re to book a place in the last four.

Spurs and Frankfurt’s evolution since their last meeting

Looking back at that 2022/23 group stage clash, both clubs have come a long way. Frankfurt were then under the guidance of Oliver Glasner — now at Crystal Palace — who has been linked with the Tottenham job, given the immense pressure Ange Postecoglou is under.

Tottenham also had several key players in that lineup who have since moved on.

Here’s how Spurs lined up on the night: In goal was Hugo Lloris. The back three consisted of Clement Lenglet, Eric Dier and Cristian Romero.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Rodrigo Bentancur sat in midfield, with Emerson Royal and Ivan Perisic operating as wing-backs.
