Recent AP Story:

Manchester City’s midfield problems have mounted after Mateo Kovacic was ruled out for up to a month by manager Pep Guardiola because of an undisclosed injury.

Guardiola confirmed Kovacic returned from the international break injured. The midfielder was hurt playing for Croatia against Portugal in the Nations League, and was substituted at halftime.

“Will be a while,” Guardiola said. “Three weeks or a month.”

Kovacic’s importance to City has grown with Rodri, the team’s first-choice holding midfielder, having been ruled out for the rest of the season with an ACL injury. Ilkay Gundogan, who is 34, might have to drop back to play at the base of midfield.

Guardiola had better news about his defense, with center backs John Stones and Manuel Akanji returning to training and Nathan Ake also available.

“I don’t know if they’re ready to play 90 minutes, but to see their faces in the training session is really good,” Guardiola said.

City, the defending champion, has lost its last four games in all competitions and next plays Tottenham at home in the Premier League on Saturday.

City is second in the league, five points behind Liverpool.

Here’s a recent soccer story from the AP:

MANCHESTER, England (AP) — Even if Erling Haaland is expected to miss out on the Ballon d’Or next week, his campaign to win it in 2025 is well underway.

Real Madrid winger Vinicius Junior is the favorite to take soccer’s most prestigious individual prize on Monday in Paris, but Haaland has been in near-unstoppable form this season.

The Norwegian goal machine scored for the 14th time in 13 games in all competitions for Manchester City to send the defending English Premier League champion to the top of the standings after beating Southampton 1-0 on Saturday.

He needed just five minutes to produce the decisive goal at Etihad Stadium, following his double against Sparta Prague in the Champions League on Wednesday, which included a spectacular heel volley.

His close-range effort against Southampton was more routine, but it was enough to send City two points clear of second-placed Liverpool, which plays Arsenal on Sunday.

On a day of late drama, Aston Villa was third but dropped points after Evanilson scored in the sixth minute of added time to earn Bournemouth a 1-1 draw. Bryan Mbeumo also scored in added time to seal a 4-3 comeback win for Brentford against Ipswich, while winless Wolverhampton scored twice late on to draw at Brighton 2-2.

Everton followed suit when Beto equalized in stoppage time to draw with Fulham 1-1.

Unstoppable Haaland

City manager Pep Guardiola described Haaland as a “guarantee for us” after the forward sealed three points against a Southampton team that has yet to win in the league since its promotion last season.

The league top scorer for the past two seasons leads the way again with 11 goals and he might have added to that total if he had been more clinical with further chances against Southampton. Mbeumo is second with eight and Nottingham Forest striker Chris Wood has seven.

Villa slips

Leading the way in the Champions League, Villa was moments away from moving within a point of Liverpool after Ross Barkley’s goal in the 76th looked like being enough to beat Bournemouth.

But Evanilson dashed those hopes.

Also U.S. international Tyler Adams come off the Bournemouth bench to make his first appearance since the Copa America after back surgery.

Villa still moved up to third and a point ahead of fourth-placed Arsenal.

“At the last moment we didn’t control the match,” Villa manager Unai Emery said. “It’s painful but we have to accept it.”

Late drama

Brentford has been known for its fast starts this season after becoming the first Premier League team to score in the opening minute in three consecutive games.

Against Ipswich, however, Thomas Frank’s team had to rely on a last-gasp goal from Mbeumo to seal a comeback 4-3 win.

Mbeumo’s second goal of the match came in the sixth minute of added time and settled a thriller, in which Brentford went 2-0 down early and blew a 3-2 lead.

“Let’s put it this way, when we play, it is exciting,” Frank said.

More fightbacks

Wolves staged a dramatic fightback of its own by scoring in the 88th and in stoppage time to salvage the draw at Brighton.

After experiencing the agony of going down to John Stones’ late winner for Man City last week, Wolves responded impressively.

Gary O’Neil’s team went behind to goals from Danny Welbeck in the 45th and Evan Ferguson in the 85th, but staged an improbable comeback through Rayan Ait-Nouri and Matheus Cunha.

Wolves is second from bottom with two points, one ahead of last-placed Southampton.

Everton was minutes away from seeing its five-game unbeaten run broken when trailing 1-0 to Fulham after former player Alex Iwobi’s goal in the 61st.

But Beto’s header leveled the game four minutes into added time at Goodison Park and lifted the Merseyside club five points clear of the relegation zone.

Fulham’s winless run in the league was extended to three games.

Here’s a recent soccer story from the AP:

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — A court in South Korea has fined Son Woong-jung, the father of English Premier League star Son Heung-min, 3 million won ($2,200) for violating child welfare law at his soccer academy.

The Chuncheon District Court notified prosecutors on Friday that it issued such a ruling on Son Woong-jung, director of the Son Football Academy in Chuncheon city, according to a local prosecutors’ office.

The academy opened in 2021, with much of the estimated cost of $15 million funded by Son Heung-min, the Tottenham and South Korea star.

Two coaches at the academy also each received a 3 million won fine for the same violation, the prosecutors’ office said.

The parents of a young player have said their son was hit by one of the two coaches with a corner flag and also subjected to verbal abuse.

Son Woong-jung denied wrongdoing but offered an apology and promised to evaluate his coaching methods.

Here’s a soccer story from last Sunday via the Associated Press:

MANCHESTER, England (AP) — By the time Dominic Solanke slid in Tottenham’s third goal, some Manchester United fans had seen enough.

Trailing 3-0 after 77 chastening minutes at Old Trafford, they vacated their seats and headed out into the Manchester rain. In the background were the mocking sounds of the visiting Spurs supporters.

“Is there a fire drill?” came a joyous chorus from the away end.

There have been many occasions like this under Erik ten Hag. When his team has looked bereft of ideas and confidence. When a stadium known as the Theatre of Dreams has become the stuff of nightmares.

“First we have to deal with this and show resilience. This is not good enough,” Ten Hag admitted afterward. “We have to accept this and get better.”

Tottenham’s victory mirrored Liverpool’s win by the same margin in United’s previous Premier League home game at the start of the month.

Ten Hag said similar things back then, but problems persist.

Goals by Brennan Johnson, Dejan Kulusevski and Dominic Solanke consigned United to a third loss in the league already this season. The record 20-time champion, which was reduced to 10 men after Bruno Fernandes’ red card, is 12th in the standings after just one win in its last five games in the league.

United has also failed to win any of its last three games in all competitions and there were boos inside the stadium from some of the fans that remained at the final whistle.

Spurs supporters were even more brutal during the game — directing chants of “You’re getting sacked (fired) in the morning” toward Ten Hag.

The United manager, who only held onto his job after winning the FA Cup last season and being subjected to an end of year review, said such thoughts weren’t on his mind — even in the face of such a troubled start to the campaign and a slew of changes made under new minority owner Jim Ratcliffe.

“No, I’m not thinking about this. We all made, in togetherness, this decision to stay together,” he said, adding that all parties “knew it would take some time”.

As bad as this latest setback for Ten Hag was, it could have been worse, with goalkeeper Andre Onana twice denying Timo Werner in one-on-one situations. He also stopped Solanke from scoring his second when through on goal late on.

While Onana prevented a rout, this was another humbling day for United, which began with Johnson’s opener in the third minute.

The forward was left with an open net to aim at after defender Micky van de Ven was allowed to run from his own half and cross from inside the box.

Johnson might have added another when firing against the post as Spurs dominated from the start.

In response Alejandro Garnacho volleyed against the post with a rare chance for United.

But any chance of a comeback was dealt a major blow after Fernandes was shown a straight red for a studs-up challenge on James Maddison shortly before the break.

Spurs didn’t have to wait long to double the lead, with Kulusevski adding a second two minutes into the second half by flicking a shot past Onana from Johnson’s cross before Solanke added a third.

“We were real good. Obviously it is a great victory,” Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou said. “That is everything we want to be.”

Delap double

Aston Villa missed the chance to move level on points with Premier League leader Liverpool after a 2-2 draw at Ipswich earlier Sunday.

Liam Delap scored twice for newly promoted Ipswich to earn a point at Portman Road.

Villa had led 2-1 at halftime, but Delap’s goal in the 72nd ensured the points were shared.

Villa remained in fifth place and Ipswich is 15th after a fourth-straight draw in the league.

Delap fired Ipswich into a surprise lead in the eighth with a low effort at the near post. Morgan Rogers leveled the score seven minutes later as Villa capitalized on the Ipswich defense’s failure to clear the danger from its own box and drilled past goalkeeper Arijanet Muric.

Ollie Watkins headed the visitors in front in the 32nd when rising to meet Leon Bailey’s cross from the right for his fourth goal in as many games.

But Villa’s hopes of leapfrogging Manchester City, Arsenal and Chelsea were ended by Delap’s second from inside the box.
