Spurs join four-way fight for ex-Chelsea star in January transfer window

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly in a heated race to secure ex-Chelsea star and current AC Milan defender Fikayo Tomori as the club grapples with a growing defensive crisis.

Ange Postecoglou is under pressure to strengthen his backline after a series of injuries left Spurs struggling to stay competitive.

Tottenham’s defensive problems began in December when key players Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero suffered hamstring injuries during a chaotic 4-3 loss to Chelsea.

Ben Davies, who was expected to return soon, also faced a setback, leaving Spurs without their top-choice defenders.

These issues have forced Postecoglou to rely on young talents like Archie Gray and Radu Dragusin, with Alfie Dorrington also in the mix.

Fans have called on chairman Daniel Levy to act quickly in the January transfer window to save the team’s season, and a potential move for Tomori could be the answer.

Tottenham faces tough competition for Fikayo Tomori

According to reports (via talkSPORT), Tottenham are one of four Premier League clubs eyeing Tomori, alongside Newcastle United, Brentford, and West Ham United.

The 27-year-old, once a key figure in AC Milan’s defense, has fallen out of favor this season, sparking interest from England.

Tottenham’s advantage lies in offering Europa League football, but Newcastle’s push for a Champions League spot could sway the defender.

Brentford and West Ham also present appealing options for Tomori, who is under contract with Milan until 2027.

Milan reportedly values Tomori at £31.5 million but may accept slightly lower offers. For Tottenham, this fee aligns with their spending power, especially given the urgency to reinforce the squad.

With Tottenham slipping into the bottom half of the Premier League, the pressure is mounting.

Signing Tomori could be a crucial step in turning their fortunes around as they prepare to face Newcastle this weekend in a match that could define their season.

Tottenham fans may be in for a surprise as Dejan Kulusevski, one of the team's standout players, is rumored to be considering a move away.

The Swedish midfielder has been a key figure for Spurs under Ange Postecoglou, showcasing his talent, especially in their 4-0 win against Manchester City. But despite his contributions, whispers of dissatisfaction have emerged.

Kulusevski, who has impressed as a No. 10 this season, has reportedly grown frustrated with his role in the squad.

With Spurs struggling and sitting 11th in the table as 2025 begins, the player's future in north London is now uncertain. Speculation about his next move has already started, with reports of initial talks happening behind the scenes.

Could Dejan Kulusevski return to Serie A?

The rumors gained traction when MilanLive revealed that AC Milan, with Zlatan Ibrahimovic as a key influencer, has shown interest in Kulusevski.

Ibrahimovic has reportedly reached out to his compatriot, exploring the possibility of bringing him back to Italy. Kulusevski made a name for himself in Serie A, with notable stints at Atalanta, Juventus, and Parma.

Milan are considering a loan deal with a mandatory buy option to secure Kulusevski. However, Tottenham are unlikely to make things easy.

The London club reportedly values the 24-year-old at around £42-50 million ($52-62m), and his contract runs until 2027, giving Spurs a strong negotiating position.

Still, the lure of European football and the chance to reunite with familiar surroundings might tempt Kulusevski. Milan, however, will first need to offload Nigerian forward Samuel Chukwueze to make room for the potential transfer.

A depleted Tottenham defence will attempt to keep out one of the Premier League's most in-form attackers when Newcastle United head to north London on Saturday.

Alexander Isak played a starring role once more as the Magpies beat a poor Manchester United 2-0 at Old Trafford on December 30, ensuring Eddie Howe's team ended the calendar year on a run of five straight wins in all competitions.

Spurs were held to a 2-2 draw by Wolves last time out and have only won three of 13 matches since early November. They are eight points and six places behind Newcastle ahead of this fixture — one in which Ange Postecoglou really needs a positive result amid the scrutiny of his methods.

Tottenham vs. Newcastle lineups, predicted starting 11, team news

Spurs' injury concerns were compounded by the loss of Destiny Udogie to a hamstring injury and a setback to Ben Davies' recovery during Christmas week. With Rodrigo Bentancur missing his game due to suspension, Postecoglou's defensive options are looking severely limited.

They will at least have Djed Spence back from a ban, while it is hoped that both Davies and striker Richarlison will be available at some point in January, even if this game comes too soon.

Tottenham predicted lineup (4-2-3-1, right to left): Forster (GK) — Porro, Dragusin, Gray, Spence — Bissouma, Sarr — Johnson, Kulusevski, Son — Solanke

Injured: Davies, Odobert, Richarlison, Romero, Udogie, Van de Ven (all hamstring), Vicario (ankle)

Suspended: Bentancur (yellow-card accumulation)

Fabian Schar is banned for the visit to north London after receiving a fifth yellow card of the season in the win at Man United. Kieran Trippier is also a doubt after suffering some discomfort during the match, but otherwise, Eddie Howe does not have any further concerns after that game.

Sven Botman, Emil Krafth and goalkeeper Nick Pope could all make their comebacks in January, but Jamaal Lascelles and Callum Wilson will likely be out a little longer.

Newcastle predicted lineup (4-3-3, right to left): Dubravka (GK) — Livramento, Kelly, Burn, Hall — Guimaraes, Tonali, Joelinton — Murphy, Isak, Gordon

Injured: Botman (knee), Krafth (shoulder), Pope (knee), Lascelles (knee), Trippier (muscle, doubt), Wilson (hamstring)

Destiny Udogie joins Tottenham injury list: Games Italy star will miss

Submitted by daniel on

Description

Tottenham have suffered yet another injury blow with left-back Destiny Udogie forced off in their 2-2 Premier League draw with Wolves on December 29.

Jorgen Strand Larsen's late equaliser means Ange Postecoglou's side end 2024 with just one win in their last seven EPL games.

Postecoglou was bullish in his post-match comments claiming his players need a break ahead of their January 4 clash with Newcastle United.

MORE: All the latest Tottenham news | Premier League schedule for 2024/25 | Latest Premier League top scorer rankings

Injuries continue to be a major issue for the Australian coach - particularly in defence - with Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven both currently out of action.

Udogie joins the duo in the treatment room, with Postecoglou now without three of his first-choice back four, with Rodrigo Bentancur suspended for the clash with the Magpies and Ben Davies out.

"I think it's a hamstring for Destiny. We've been relying on a core group of players because we haven't had the ability to rotate, so at some point, it was going to catch up with us. Unfortunately, it caught up with Destiny," Postecoglou stated on Udogie's withdrawal against Wolves.

Destiny Udogie injury length, games he will miss

Udogie has been unfortunate with injuries since joining Tottenham in 2023, with the Italy international missing around 12 weeks of action due to various injuries - including surgery in April 2024 - which ended his debut 2023/24 campaign.

Two weeks missed in September was a setback for the current campaign, but this fresh injury is expected to put him out for around six weeks, as Postecoglou looks to rotate.

Spurs are not expected to sign a replacement for the 22-year-old in the January transfer window, and Postecoglou will look for solutions in his squad, including Djed Spence, Davies and the forgotten Sergio Reguilon.

Tottenham face a busy start to 2025 and Udogie will miss games split across multiple competitions, which could rack up to a ten-match absence.

Games Destiny Udogie could miss:

Newcastle United (Home - Premier League): Jan, 4

Liverpool (Home - EFL Cup): Jan, 8

Tamworth (Away - FA Cup): Jan, 12

Arsenal (Away - Premier League): Jan, 15

Everton (Away - Premier League): Jan, 19

Hoffenheim (Away - Europa League): Jan, 23

Leicester City (Home - Premier League): Jan, 26

Elfsborg (Home - Europa League): Jan, 30

Brentford (Away - Premier League): Feb, 2

Liverpool (Away - FFL Cup): Feb, 6

Tottenham face a tricky test against a resurgent Wolves after their latest setback against Nottingham Forest. Ange Postecoglou's side has shown flashes of brilliance this season but continues to drop points in games they’re expected to dominate.

Wolves, under new manager Vitor Pereira, have found fresh momentum with back-to-back wins, including a confident 2-0 Boxing Day triumph over Manchester United. Sitting just above the relegation zone, they’re eager to continue climbing.

For Spurs, a win is non-negotiable to ease mounting pressure on Postecoglou. However, Wolves’ newfound grit makes them dangerous prey, especially against a Tottenham side struggling for consistency.

Tottenham vs. Wolves lineups, team news

Defence remains the biggest concern for Spurs, with long-standing absentees Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven and Ben Davies set to potentially be joined by Radu Dragusin. The centre-back was forced off during the Boxing Day loss to Forest with an ankle issue, with Postecoglou admitting "we'll have to wait and see" if he will be able to feature at home to Wolves.

First-choice goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario remains out for some time to come with an ankle injury of his own, furthering the London side's frailties at the back. Djed Spence's suspension for a second booking in Nottingham means there is one more for Postecoglou to have to cope without at the weekend.

Elsewhere in the lineup, Richarlison, Mikey Moore and Wilson Odobert remain sidelined until 2025.

Tottenham vs. Wolves lineups, expected starting 11, confirmed team news, injuries: Spurs' defensive woes deepen

Description

Tottenham may have the worst possible next opponent in the Premier League after once again falling to defeat against Nottingham Forest.

Wolverhampton Wanderers are hovering over the relegation zone but have won both games since the arrival of new manager Vitor Pereira, including an assured 2-0 win over Manchester United on Boxing Day.

Spurs famously thrashed defending champions Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium earlier this season, but the number of points dropped in games they've been widely expected to win — or in which they had been leading during the match itself — could make them the perfect prey for Wolves' rise from the depths.

And with pressure mounting on Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou, a defeat at home to the Midlands side could deal irreversible damage to his job security.

Tottenham vs. Liverpool prediction, odds, betting tips and best bets for Premier League match

Description

Liverpool hope to turn around their recent slip at the top of the Premier League table as they visit London to face Tottenham on Sunday.

The Reds sit atop both the league standings and the Champions League table in an explosive first season for Arne Slot. It's been over three months since their only loss of the season, but they have drawn each of their last two in Premier League play, seeing the lead slim to just two points, albeit with a game in hand.

Add in the harder-than-expected 90 minutes in victory over Southampton in the EFL Cup midweek, and there's worry that a blip could become a trend with a few more poor performances.

BET NOW:Latest odds for Premier League games and best bets for the Tottenham vs. Liverpool match on BetMGM

Tottenham, meanwhile, have shown little consistency at all this season as they sit 11th in the table. They smashed Southampton in their last league game, but made life difficult on themselves in a mistake-filled win over Man United in the League Cup on Thursday.

Tottenham vs. Liverpool prediction, odds

Moneyline lean: Liverpool (-135 on BetMGM)

Score prediction: Tottenham 1-3 Liverpool

The Reds don't look quite as dominant as they were earlier in the season, but they are quite clearly good enough to punish Spurs for the many mistakes they make week-in and week-out. Ange Postecoglou's inability to sway from his style of play despite his team's frailties will give Liverpool a number of opportunities to capitalize on throughout the 90 minutes.

Spurs have been strong in the attacking third too, and they should be able to beat Alisson to make the game competitive, but in the end they just aren't at the necessary level to take points off the league leaders.

Tottenham vs. Liverpool best bet

Pick: Liverpool 18+ total shots

Odds: -110 on FanDuel

This would usually be an extremely high bar to clear, but for the league leaders against one of the most chaotic teams in England, it's a no-brainer.

Tottenham, with their injury-riddled back line, have conceded 12 or more shots in all but two of their last eight Premier League games, with both single-digit defensive efforts coming against relegation opponents. They gave up 17 to Chelsea, 21 to Bournemouth, 23 to Manchester City, and 14 to Fulham across that span, plus 20 to a rotated Manchester United side midweek in the Carabao Cup.

Liverpool, meanwhile, have put up at least 16 shots in each of their last four league games and got past 18 in two of those, as they've ramped up the attacking pressure in recent weeks. The Reds also saw themselves not just past 18 shots in both of last season's meetings, but actually beat the 20-shot mark in both games. Fraser Forster will be under siege.

Tottenham vs. Liverpool prop bet

Pick: Cody Gakpo anytime goal scorer

Odds: +150 on BetMGM

As Darwin Nunez struggles for finishing form, Cody Gakpo has muscled his way into the starting lineup, and has delivered exactly what the Reds needed opposite Mohamed Salah.

With the Egyptian superstar receiving more and more attention from opposition defenses, Gakpo has been able to exploit the extra space in the attacking third. He has a history against Spurs, with a goal in each of their two Premier League meetings last season, and he's in good form at the moment as well with three goals in his last five Premier League starts.

Tottenham, meanwhile, have been so committed to forcing Ange Postecoglou's system that they fail to adapt to their opponents as necessary. Pedro Porro was caught high up the pitch numerous times against Manchester United, which allowed Bruno Fernandes to take advantage against a scrambling Radu Dragusin and Archie Gray. There will be acres of room for Gakpo to operate, just like he capitalized on against Fulham last time out against Kenny Tete.

Tottenham vs. Man United lineups, expected starting 11, confirmed team news, injuries: Rashford, Garnacho back for Carabao Cup?

Description

Tottenham host Manchester United on Thursday in the final Carabao Cup quarterfinal tie of the week.

Spurs thrashed Southampton 5-0 away from home last Sunday in the Premier League to ease some of the pressure on manager Ange Postecoglou, but his pledge to deliver trophies in his second season at the club makes this meeting with the Red Devils one of the most significant games of the north Londoners' campaign.

United are still adjusting to life under head coach Ruben Amorim, appointed last month as Erik ten Hag's replacement. Their dramatic derby win over Manchester City on Sunday means they will head into this contest in good spirits despite sitting a point behind Spurs in the league standings and having lost 3-0 when these teams last met at Old Trafford.

The Sporting News looks at the latest team news and predicted lineups.

Spurs are likely to be without first-choice centre-backs Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero, while Ben Davies is also a major doubt.

Son Heung-min sustained a knock in the 5-0 thrashing of Southampton and is a doubt, while Destiny Udogie felt muscle tightness in that game and could also miss United's visit. However, Yves Bissouma can return to midfield after serving a one-game suspension.

First-choice goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario will be sidelined until around March, while Richarlison is not expected back until January. Rodrigo Bentancur is serving a seven-match FA suspension.

Tottenham predicted lineup (4-3-3, right to left): Forster (GK) — Porro, Dragusin, Gray, Spence — Maddison, Sarr, Bissouma — Kulusevski, Solanke, Johnson

Injured: Van de Ven (hamstring), Romero (hamstring), Odobert (thigh), Son (knock), Richarlison (thigh), Davies (thigh), Vicario (foot)

Suspended: Bentancur

United are without Luke Shaw and Mason Mount, who suffered a muscle problem early on in the 2-1 win over Man City.

Noussair Mazraoui suffered a knock in that game and is also a doubt for the trip to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Otherwise, the Red Devils' injury picture is looking far rosier than it has in some time.

It remains to be seen whether Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho will be recalled after being dropped from the squad for the Manchester derby.

Man United predicted lineup (3-4-3, right to left): Onana (GK) — De Ligt, Maguire, Martinez — Antony, Mainoo, Ugarte, Dalot — Amad Diallo, Hojlund, Fernandes

Injured: Shaw (undisc.), Mount (muscle), Mazraoui (knock)
