Celtic handed blow by Tottenham Hotspur announcement

As the debate over the transfer window dealings, or lack of them, at Celtic rumbles on, details of another failure to sign a forward emerge. With Kyogo Furuhashi’s move to Rennes, there was a significant gap in Brendan Rodgers' squad which the manager had seemed keen to fill. Fans were also left disappointed when no new striker was brought in.

Although there are ways to patch up the gap left by Kyogo, even those have some question marks over them. Adam Idah is already stepping up with four goals in the last three games.

Daizen Maeda has shown his ability to play a more central role too. And then in the background, Johnny Kenny and Daniel Cummings should get a chance to step into the spotlight when the situation calls for it.

Kenny though was looking likely to be loaned out again. And Cummings was on the verge of an early move to West Ham United ahead of his contract expiry in the summer. Both moves came to a halt as Celtic couldn't bring anyone else in at striker before the close of the window.

Celtic handed blow by Tottenham Hotspur announcement

The news that Tottenham Hotspur have signed a forward wanted by Celtic won't help matters. The Hoops had been monitoring Mason Melia, as were several other teams across Europe. The youngster has been in fine form for St Patrick's Athletic and is believed to have a big future ahead of him.

Tottenham Hotspur have announced that they have reached an agreement with St Patrick's Athletic for the transfer of Melia. He will have a deal that will run until 2031 and will join the English side in January, 2026.

The transfer fee is believed to be in the region of €1.9 million, which would have been well within the Hoops' capability, although whether Rodgers and his team felt it was value for money may be an issue. No doubt a strong wage package at the London club will have helped Melia’s decision.Â

It’s unlikely Melia would have been the answer to fill the Kyogo gap. But he may have offered another option alongside or in place of Kenny or Cummings. Especially as the latter is still likely to make that move to West Ham at the season's end.

Things might have started well for Ange Postecoglou at Tottenham Hotspur last season but it is safe to say that his future with the London club is now well and truly up in the air. The Australian manager, who knew nothing but success while at Celtic, now finds his team in 15th position in the Premier League and has a number of injuries to deal with as well.

As a result, there have been plenty of calls for Tottenham Hotspur to sack Postecoglou. But for the time being, it looks like the club are ready to stand behind the Australian as he aims to turn things around.

Interestingly, it looks like they passed on the chance to sign one of Postecoglou's best players from his time as Celtic manager. Unfortunately, that did not prevent him from leaving Parkhead.

As reported by TBR Football, Tottenham Hotspur rejected the chance to make an offer for Kyogo Furuhashi. The Premier League club were offered an opportunity to bid for the Japanese forward, however, they have opted to focus their attention elsewhere.

Of course, that feels very possible. After all, Kyogo did end up leaving Celtic this winter, even though his destination was not Tottenham Hotspur.

Considering Kyogo's history with Tottenham Hotspur and their injury troubles right now, a move would have made a ton of sense. The Japanese striker scored 54 goals in his two seasons playing Angeball. Clearly, Postecoglou knows how to get the best out of him.

Instead, Kyogo has ended up joining Rennes, who are hoping to avoid relegation from French Ligue 1. It remains to be seen if he is able to rescue their season. On the other hand, Celtic have brought back Jota, who was another success story from Postecoglou's time at the club.

Celtic are always on the lookout for the next big thing. Unfortunately, they do not have a great recent record when it comes to developing youngsters into first-team regulars but the only way to change that is by focusing in that area. And it looks like a highly-rated striker is in the sights of the Hoops right now.

The player we are talking about is Mason Melia. The 17-year-old striker already has more than 50 appearances for St Patrick's Athletic and has scored 10 goals at the senior level as well. Other than that, he has also represented the Republic of Ireland at multiple youth international levels.

That has caught the eye of several teams around Europe. Celtic are amongst them and look like one of the frontrunners in the race to sign the striker.

As reported by the Irish Mirror, Melia has travelled to Celtic amid growing interest in the St Patrick’s Athletic player. His visit to the Scottish champions is believed to have taken place last week. The striker had already made a trip to Tottenham Hotspur before Christmas. Italian side Bologna are also eager to sign him, while there is also interest from the Bundesliga and Belgium.

It remains to be seen what the future holds for Melia. But considering his visit to Celtic, it certainly looks like the Hoops are in the mix to sign him.

Of course, someone like Melia would not be expected to come in and make an immediate impact. But hopefully, in the long run, he could develop into a key player for the Hoops.

The third striker role at Celtic seems to be up for grabs at the moment. Johnny Kenny impressed in a recent appearance while quite a few players have been linked with a move to Parkhead.

Ange Postecoglou finds himself in a world of trouble right now. The Australian swapped Celtic for Tottenham Hotspur in the summer of 2023, merely days after winning a treble with the Hoops. And he made a brilliant start to life in England as the London club were looking like Premier League contenders early in the 23/24 campaign. Injuries would soon take their toll though and they have never rediscovered that form since then.

Tottenham Hotspur are going through some terrible form right now. Postecoglou getting sacked feels like a very real possibility at the moment.

It is worth pointing out though that Tottenham Hotspur are dealing with a long list of injuries right now. It is unlikely that any manager could come in under these circumstances and get them back on track immediately.

Could they end up making additions in January? Time shall tell. And if they do, could that turn out to be one of Celtic's best players?

Ange Postecoglou's Tottenham want Celtic's best player

As reported by TBR Football, Aston Villa, Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United are all looking closely at Nicholas Kuhn. Brentford, Brighton & Hove Albion and Crystal Palace have been tracking him since the summer.

Kuhn has been Celtic's best player so far this season. There is no doubt about that. His effectiveness from the wing, both in terms of goals and assists, has been unmatched.

Celtic needed a talisman with Matt O'Riley leaving in the summer to join Brighton & Hove Albion in a Scottish-record move. Not only has Kuhn taken over the mantle but he has also taken things to the next level.

Kuhn's output is one of the key reasons Celtic have been so prolific despite Kyogo's shaky form up front. As a result, the club surely would not want to see the German winger depart anytime soon.

It has now been quite some time since Ange Postecoglou left Celtic in order to join Tottenham Hotspur, merely days after winning a historic treble for the Hoops. Brendan Rodgers replaced him and has already lifted three trophies in his second stint, with the latest being the Scottish League Cup last weekend. On the other hand, the Australian boss continues to search for his first piece of silverware in England.

A lot of Celtic's regular starters were signed during the Postecoglou era. Could the Australian look to reunite with a few of them as he struggles for results at Tottenham Hotspur?

Kyogo Furuhashi and Daizen Maeda have been linked with Tottenham Hotspur in the past without a move materialising. Now, it is Reo Hatate's turn.

As reported by Glasgow World, a journalist who has worked for the likes of the BBC and Sky Sports said while speaking on the Spurs Chat Podcast:

"The last midfielder I’m going to talk about is Reo Hatate.

“He scored one of the penalties in the shootout against Rangers. Ange knows and trusts the player, he does like a goal or two as well. He’s one I could certainly see happening. If Spurs go in with a reasonable transfer fee Celtic will find it hard to keep him."

Hatate's performances this season have divided the opinion of fans. On one hand, there is no doubt that on his day, he is one of Celtic's best players. But on the other hand, he has put in some underwhelming displays as well in what has been a stop-start campaign for the Japanese midfielder even though he seems to have put his injury problems behind him.

Then again, Rodgers did drop Hatate from the starting XI in the game against Borussia Dortmund and we all know how that turned out. Celtic lost 7-1 and the Japanese international was one of their best performers when brought on as a substitute.

Hatate has been linked with a move to the Premier League in the past as well. Let's see if it materialises at some point in the future and whether Tottenham Hotspur come calling.
