Stuart Attwell: Referee makes historic VAR announcement in Carabao Cup semi-final

History was made during Wednesday's Carabao Cup semi-final between Tottenham and Liverpool as referee Stuart Attwell announced a decision by the video assistant referee (VAR) inside the stadium.

It was the first time it has happened in England, with Attwell explaining why Dominic Solanke's late goal for Spurs was ruled out.

"After a review, Dominic Solanke was in an offside position," he said over the PA system.

Despite that, Spurs did score through Lucas Bergvall in the 86th minute to win the first-leg tie 1-0.

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou was not enthused by the decision to make the announcement, telling Sky Sports: "If people think that announcement added anything to the game tonight then I am sorry...

"It used to be you put your flag up and the game goes on, but anyway."

The decision to make the announcements is part of a trial running for all of the League Cup semi-finals.

As part of it, referees will announce final decisions following a visit to the VAR pitchside monitor, or when rulings are made on factual matters such as accidental handball by a goalscorer and offside offences where the attacker touches the ball.

Such announcements are common in other sports such as rugby union and American football, and the system was also trialled during the 2023 Women's World Cup.

The Premier League said in a meeting last summer that in-game VAR announcements would be put in place at some point this season.

Tottenham midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur was taken off on a stretcher just six minutes into Wednesday's Carabao Cup semi-final first leg against Liverpool.

The 27-year-old Uruguay international fell while unchallenged as he stretched to head a ball from a corner.

Bentancur was treated on the pitch for around nine minutes and received oxygen before he was replaced by forward Brennan Johnson.

It was later confirmed he was conscious and talking and will go to hospital for further checks.

The game at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium was goalless at the time Bentancur went off.

Slot backs Alexander-Arnold

Tottenham v Liverpool (20:00 GMT)

Liverpool

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot attempted to place a protective arm around Trent Alexander-Arnold by suggesting no-one mentions the effect of contract issues when the team are winning.

The England defender was criticised for a poor performance in Sunday’s 2-2 draw at home to Manchester United, just days after Real Madrid made an approach for the 26-year-old whose current deal expires in the summer.

Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk are in similar positions but Alexander-Arnold, an academy graduate and one of their most valuable assets, has found the spotlight focused firmly on him of late.

But Slot insisted results determine reactions as no-one makes a fuss when his team win, and he feels the players deserve some credit for the level of consistency they are producing – the team are top of the Premier League and Champions League – despite uncertainty over their futures.

“What I do know this season, all the points and all the results we got this season are deserved,” the Dutchman said. “All the players are fit at the moment but if we drop points when we have injuries, people say it is because you have injuries.

“If we drop points when Mo misses a penalty against (Real) Madrid, he is distracted by his contract situation. If Trent has not his best performance, he is distracted by the contract situation. If they play really well nobody tells me, ‘That’s because they have a contract situation’.

“We always try to find arguments but nine out of 10 times the best argument is the quality of the team you face or the game-plan the other team has.”

'We want to win everything'

Tottenham v Liverpool (20:00 GMT)

Liverpool defender Kostas Tsimikas has admitted his side must beat a "very, very hard opponent" if they are to once again reach the Carabao Cup final.

The Reds are hoping to lift the trophy for the second season running, but now need to get the better of Tottenham over two legs to reach the Wembley final.

Tsimikas told the club's official website: "Always when we play against them it's really tough.

"We have to win both games if we want to be at Wembley. They have very, very talented players and they play really, really good football.

"It's a very, very hard opponent to play against, but this team showed many, many times that we are 100% focused.

"The team is clear: we want to win everything."

'It's tricky, they fly a lot' - Arteta on EFL Cup balls

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta still believes his side can reach the Carabao Cup final - but says his players must first master the "tricky" ball used in the competition.

The Gunners were beaten 2-0 by Newcastle in Tuesday's semi-final first leg after goals from Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon.

Arsenal had 23 shots during the match but just three were on target, as Gabriel Martinelli struck the post and Kai Havertz headed a simple chance wide.

When he was asked about the missed chances in his post-match news conference, Arteta said he would not tell his players to change anything, but did mention the impact the ball had.

"We kicked a lot of balls over the bar, and it's tricky that these balls fly a lot so there's details that we can do better," he said. "But at the end that's gone - there's no way back, it's about the next game and that's our world, the reality is our world.

"It's just half-time. When I see the team play, and how we deal with a lot of situations and play against a very good team, I must say I have full belief that we can go out there and do it."

Prior to the defeat by Newcastle, the Gunners had scored 11 goals in three EFL Cup ties so far this season.

The ball in the competition is made by Puma, while the ball used in the Premier League is manufactured by Nike. Clubs are given balls to train with before EFL Cup fixtures.

Newcastle take control of first semi-final

Tuesday: Arsenal 0-2 Newcastle

Alexander Isak's rich goalscoring form continued as Newcastle United took control of their Carabao Cup semi-final with a superb first-leg win against Arsenal at Emirates Stadium.

Newcastle have never won the competition but will make their second final in three seasons if they avoid defeat, or lose by a one-goal margin, in the second leg at St James' Park on 5 February.

Arsenal, second in the Premier League, started the tie as favourites, but have it all to do in the return fixture.

Isak scored his 14th goal in 15 games to set Newcastle on the way to their seventh successive win.

Goalkeeper Martin Dubravka's free-kick was launched forward, Sven Botman headed the ball on and Jacob Murphy played it into Isak's path with the Swede lifting a composed finish past David Raya.

Anthony Gordon doubled the visitors' lead in the 51st minute, converting the rebound after Raya could only parry Isak's shot.

Gabriel Martinelli had hit the post for the Gunners when the game was goalless, with Jurrien Timber and William Saliba also failing to score with close-range headers.

Is Potter the right replacement?

Graham Potter is the prime candidate to succeed Julen Lopetegui at the London Stadium.

West Ham began talks with the Englishman regarding a short-term deal before dismissing Lopetegui.

Potter took an unconventional route into coaching, taking Swedish side Ostersund from the fourth tier to Europe in the space of seven years.

He spent a season at Swansea City before taking charge at Brighton in 2019. After implementing an attractive style of football and establishing the Seagulls as a mid-table Premier League side, Potter was appointed manager of Chelsea.

That big move didn't go to plan though, with Potter dismissed after seven months having won just 12 of his 31 games in charge.

Potter was linked with the England job, but the Football Association chose Thomas Tuchel as Gareth Southgate's successor.

What's happening at West Ham?

Rumours are circulating on social media and gossip columns that West Ham manager Julen Lopetegui is set to be sacked today.

What we do know is that West Ham did have a manager's press conference scheduled for 13:15 GMT which they cancelled this morning.

Lopetegui then took team training as normal.

Graham Potter has been in talks to replace Lopetegui, initially on a short term deal.

'Musk wants to buy Liverpool'

Liverpool's owners Fenway Sports Group have not received any approaches for the club after Elon Musk's father Errol told Times Radio his son was interested in buying the Reds.

FSG, which added Liverpool to their sporting portfolio in 2010, has looked for external investment in the past but at no point has a full sale been seriously considered.

However, Errol Musk was asked whether his son had his eye on Anfield. "I can't comment on that. They'll raise the price," he said.

When pressed on whether Elon - the world's richest man - would want to buy Liverpool he added: "Oh, yes. But that doesn't mean he's buying it. "He would like to yes, obviously. Anybody would want to - so would I."

Ange Postecoglou: Liverpool's Mohamed Salah would struggle in Tottenham team, says boss

Submitted by daniel on

Description

Ange Postecoglou says even in-form Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah would find life a struggle at the moment in the Tottenham team he manages.

Spurs are set to face the Reds in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final on Wednesday (20:00 GMT), during a difficult run of form.

Tottenham have lost three and drawn one of their past four matches, including a 6-3 Premier League defeat by Liverpool on 22 December.

Egypt international Salah scored twice in that game and has netted 21 goals from 27 appearances in all competitions during a particularly eye-catching campaign.

However, under-pressure Postecoglou believes even having an "unbelievable player" in Salah at his disposal would have done little to improve their fortunes.

"Mo is a world-class player, but if you put him in our team now I'm not sure he'll have that same level of performance because of the situation we're in as a group," said the Spurs boss.

"His attacking play, who do you need? You need a team that's kind of in good form, creating opportunities, playing on the front foot, having a really solid foundation of a defence that is cohesive. None of these things exist at the moment."

Spurs head into the match against Arne Slot's side with the news that captain Son Heung-min will stay at the club until at least the summer of 2026 after activating an option to extend his contract.

Son has scored 169 times in 431 Spurs appearances, including seven goals in all competitions this season.

Postecoglou felt the South Korean's form does not reflect his true ability when compared with fellow 32-year-old Salah.

"You've always got to give context. He [Salah] is playing in a fantastic team that are flying at the moment," he explained.

"I'd hazard to say that if you put Son Heung-min in Liverpool's team, I reckon his goalscoring return would be decent. It's hard for our players at the moment, they're trying awfully hard to be the best they can be.

"But when we're at our best, I still think you'll see Sonny's return, in terms of his ability to score goals and be really effective for us. I don't think that's diminished at all."

Tottenham have triggered an option to extend forward Son Heung-min's contract by a year, until the summer of 2026.

The 32-year-old joined Spurs from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015 and has scored 169 goals in 431 appearances for the club.

The South Korea international has 125 goals and 68 assists in 320 Premier League outings.

He was part of a Spurs side that reached the club's first Champions League final in 2019 and helped them finish fifth in the top flight last season.

Tottenham are 12th in the current campaign, with Son scoring five goals and registering six assists in 17 top-flight appearances.

The north London side have made the announcement prior to the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final at home to Liverpool on Wednesday.

Antonin Kinsky: Could Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper become next Petr Cech?

Submitted by daniel on

Description

Is Tottenham's goalkeeping crisis over? After first-choice keeper Guglielmo Vicario got injured in the autumn, Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou relied on Fraser Forster or Brandon Austin.

It was far from an ideal situation but, over the last days, Tottenham might have found a solution by signing 21-year-old Antonin Kinsky from Slavia Prague.

Kinsky played in the Czech second division as recently as May 2023 but, this season, has had a meteoric rise to become one of the best goalkeepers in central Europe, bringing comparisons with legendary Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech.

However, there is a different decisive figure behind Kinsky's upbringing: his father, who approved a move to Spurs.

Antonin Kinsky Sr is a former goalkeeper with almost 400 games across the Czech and Russian leagues and five international caps. Since his childhood, Kinsky Jr has dreamt about achieving similar success in goal - and looks to be on the right pathway.

His dad has been supportive all along, also during negotiations with Tottenham.

As Spurs chairman Daniel Levy travelled to Prague, the meeting with Kinsky's dad proved to be decisive. Kinsky Jr confirmed that in the interview with iSport.cz:, external "I have been listening to my dad until this moment. I would not have this chance without him.

"From the start, I considered Tottenham to be a great opportunity, but I waited on a green light from my father. The meeting with Mr Levy convinced him."

It has been a turbulent season for Kinsky. In the summer there were rumours about a summer departure from Slavia due to a lack of playing time, but he stayed as the first-choice goalkeeper Jindrich Stanek got injured at Euro 2024.

Kinsky stepped in and helped Slavia with great performances, conceding only seven goals in 19 league matches.

He was also convincing in their Europa League games and caught attention with his aerial prowess, reflexes, and distribution skills.

Tottenham's deal to bring Kinsky in is worth an initial fee of about £12.5m, with reports, external the fee could rise to £16.6m, making Kinsky the fourth-biggest sale in the history of the Czech league, only behind Tomas Soucek, Tomas Rosicky and Adam Hlozek.

That was practically unimaginable just over a year ago. After spending a season in the Czech second tier on loan at MFK Vyskov, Kinsky joined FK Pardubice for another loan from Slavia Prague, where his playing time remained very limited despite his talent.

Kinsky started the season as first choice at FK Pardubice before a red card, but - after serving his four-match ban - there was nothing to stop him. His potential was evident.

Martin Shejbal worked at Pardubice as a goalkeeping coach and worked closely with Kinsky. "He's a big pro, he works on himself all the time," he told BBC Sport.

"He got to the top thanks to the fact that he works harder and more than other players and goalkeepers."

Shejbal has years of experience working with various top Czech goalkeepers, including Braga's Lukas Hornicek and Getafe's Jiri Letacek.

When it comes to any comparisons, he described Kinsky as "simply a different breed".

"His focus is only football and he is very fit for top European leagues. He is relentless when it comes to his goals, thinks even about his eating or sleeping. In interviews, he's also unique.

"A lot of journalists also mentioned that he seemed to be too clever for a footballer and especially a goalkeeper," Shejbal added.

Kinsky has represented the Czech Republic from under-15 to under-21 level and earned his first senior call-ups for their Nations League games in October and November, but did not feature.

His senior debut is just a matter of time, though, as Kinsky is considered not to be only talented, but also very hard-working.

As Shejbal mentions, Kinsky poses an interesting personality due to high demands he puts on himself.

"He is open to alternative methods of everything. We spent hours talking about various ways of preparation.

"It's not always easy for a coach to work with a player like that, because sometimes what he did was not right. On the other side, exactly that mentality makes him an exceptional person and it helped him to achieve what he did," he explains.

Growing up in Prague, Kinsky used to train with a personal fitness coach before going to school.

"I remember that sometimes I was lazy to get up from the bed, but then I got off the metro in the dark and told myself that I knew what I was doing," he told Czech website Seznam Zpravy., external

He wanted to be as successful as his dad, his biggest idol.

"When I was small, we went to watch his games, and then at home we talked about various game situations and how he could have done something better."

Work ethic was a major part of his upbringing - and his parents also taught him how to be calm and self-confident. Watching interviews with successful people from various fields, or repeatedly reading a book about Kobe Bryant, became additional sources of inspiration.

There is still a long way for Kinsky to emulate his compatriot Cech, who holds a record for the most clean sheets in Premier League history with 202.

"It is not possible to repeat his career. I have a different pathway, but I hope that I will grab my chance in England in the same way as him," Kinsky said., external

When it comes to playing style, according to Shejbal, Cech and Kinsky don't have that much in common.

"I would rather say there are similar personalities," he said. "Cech was a great professional. When he did some mistakes in the national team's games, he never really made a victim out of himself, he would not be drowned in regret. Kinsky is the same."

Shejbal backs Kinsky to make his name at Tottenham and not spend time out on loan.

"I expect him to break through and become a really quality Premier League goalkeeper," he concluded.

Tottenham analysis: Is Spurs' league position unfortunate?

A third defeat in their past four Premier League games at home to Newcastle on Saturday left Tottenham 12th in the table.

But, when delving into their goalscoring statistics, supporters could be forgiven for wondering how exactly this has happened.

Ange Postecoglou's side have 15 fewer points than at this stage last season - despite scoring the same number of goals and conceding just one more.

So, how can that be?

Tottenham this season have been winning big and losing small.

Six of Spurs' seven wins have been by three or more goals - the exception being a 3-1 win over Brentford in September.

Nine of their 10 defeats have been by a single goal - including against the Magpies on Saturday - with the exception being the 6-3 defeat by Liverpool in December.
