Tottenham transfers: Spurs 'offered chance' to complete £75m DOUBLE raid on Bayern Munich with 69

Tottenham are set to be ‘offered the chance’ to sign Bayern Munich winger Kingsley Coman at the same time as tying up a permanent deal for Mathys Tel, per reports.

Tel, 19, signed for Spurs on loan in January after beating the competition to his signature and Ange Postecoglou’s side have the option to make the deal permanent for £45m.

The teenager is yet to make his mark at Tottenham with just one goal in six appearances so far, but is still considered to have big potential.

According to GiveMeSport, Bayern Munich will ‘offer’ Spurs the chance to sign winger Coman when they reconvene for transfer talks about Tel in the summer.

The report claims Bayern are ‘willing to listen to offers as low as £30m’ for Coman after he has failed to nail down a spot in Vincent Kompany’s starting XI.

The 28-year-old joined the Bundesliga giants in 2017 and has made 328 appearances for them to date, notching 69 goals and 62 assists in the process.

Coman is undoubtedly a top player on his day, but after starting just 11 league games this term his future is increasingly uncertain.

Tottenham keen to sign new winger this summer

The report adds that Tottenham are yet to make a ‘final decision’ on whether they ‘would be eager to hand Coman an exit route when he is pushed in their direction.’

However, the north Londoners ‘are being alerted’ to the possibility of signing Coman, who ‘remains an attacking threat for Bayern.’

Of course, Coman would have to agree to join Spurs, and whether he would do that if they don’t qualify for Europe is unclear

TEAMtalk understands that Tottenham are keen to add a new winger to their squad. Son Heung-min is past his prime at the age of 32 and is only under contract until 2026, so a long-term replacement is being sought for him.

A player who is firmly on their shortlist is Bournemouth ace Antoine Semenyo, who has notched seven goals and four assists in the Premier League this season.

Tottenham are keen on Semenyo, but Liverpool and Newcastle have also been linked so it won’t be a straightforward race to win.

With this in mind, whether Spurs make a move for Coman could depend on whether they’re able to sign other targets first.

It’s also worth noting that while Tottenham do have the option to sign Tel, they are under no obligation to and he could still return to Bayern if his form doesn’t improve.

With Dominic Solanke fit again and Tel an unused substitute in Spurs’ 2-2 draw with Bournemouth last week, it will be interesting to see how much of a role he plays moving forward.

Tottenham round-up: Dusan Vlahovic linked, Marc Guehi latest

Meanwhile, reports suggest that Tottenham could make a move for Juventus striker Dusan Vlahovic this summer, as he may be available for as little as £25m.

It’s claimed that the Serbian international could be signed as a replacement for Richarlison, who could leave Spurs amid Saudi Pro League interest.

Juventus have reportedly decided that they will listen to offers at a reduced rate after being unable to convince Vlahovic to sign a new contract.

The 25-year-old forward is on course to enter the final 12 months of his existing contract, which currently allows him to pocket in the region of £315,000-per-week, and Juve are concerned he will try and walk away for free – hence their desire to cash in.

In other news, Tottenham are reportedly keen to reopen talks to sign Crystal Palace centre-back Marc Guehi this summer.

Spurs had a bid of around £70m rejected for Guehi in January and it’s claimed that they could put forward a similar fee again in the coming months.

Tottenham Hotspur are being tipped to make a fresh attempt to sign one of European football’s top strikers in a deal that could amazingly cost just £25million in the summer transfer window.

Whether Ange Postecoglou is in charge or not beyond the end of the current campaign, Spurs are still expected to try and add another forward to their ranks after Dominic Solanke’s plethora of injuries in his debut season and doubts over Richarlison’s future.

Having barely missed a game during his time at Bournemouth, Solanke has had ankle and knee injuries that have forced him to miss time this term and has struggled with a consistent level of performance as a result.

The England frontman has, at least managed to find the net 11 times in 31 games, which is eight more than the three Richarlison has to his name in another hugely frustrating season for the Brazilian.

Indeed, it’s been reported that Tottenham are looking to offload the former Everton man this summer as clubs from the Saudi Pro League continue to hover for his signature.

To that end, Spurs are expected to sign stronger competition for Solanke, with it looking increasingly unlikely to be Mathys Tel as the Bayern Munich loanee continues to struggle to adapt to the English game.

Spurs do have an option to sign the young forward, who has scored just once in six appearances for the club so far, but the latest reports suggest they are ready to try and land long-term target Dusan Vlahovic instead.

A report from GiveMeSport suggests that Juventus are ready to put the Serbian hotshot on the market for just £25m when the summer window opens.

Contract impasse leads to surprise Juve move

GMS sources report that the Turin giants have decided that they will listen to offers at a reduced rate after being unable to convince him to sign a new contract.

The 25-year-old forward is on course to enter the final 12 months of his existing contract, which currently allows him to pocket in the region of £315,000-per-week, and Juve are concerned he will try and walk away for free – hence their desire to cash in.

The report adds that Tottenham have considered attempting to lure Vlahovic to north London, having seen him chalk up 16 goal contributions this season, even more at that price point.

Spurs were beaten to the Serbian’s signature when he joined Juventus from Fiorentina for £66.6million in January 2022, but he has remained on their radar ever since

However, Postecoglou’s men are far from being the only interested party, with the likes of Manchester United, Arsenal, Aston Villa, Newcastle United, Chelsea, West Ham United and Everton also having varying degrees of interest in the player.

For their part, Juve will be hoping that a bidding war ensues for Vlahovic, who they still hope to fetch more in the region of £35m for – despite the reports of that figure being £10m less.

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly planning to reopen talks to sign a top defensive talent they tried to bring in late in the January transfer window, with a £70million summer switch being mooted.

Spurs were scrambling to make late additions to Ange Postecoglou’s squad in the final days and then hours of the winter window, seeing several offers knocked back for centre-back targets in the process.

Two such targets were Burnley’s Maxime Esteve and Crystal Palace and England star Marc Guehi, with Tottenham unable to convince either club to do business on deadline day.

However, fresh reports on Tuesday have revealed that the north London outfit remain extremely keen on landing the latter, despite Palace refusing to budge from their loft asking price.

Guehi’s consistent Premier League performances have attracted interest from several top clubs, with Newcastle also keen admirers as the 24-year-old’s situation continues to be closely monitored ahead of the final year of his contract.

Indeed, Guehi has just over 15 months remaining on his current Selhurst Park deal, with CaughtOffside explaining that he is not ready to renew and will instead seek out a new adventure.

The report adds that the Three Lions star is set to push for a move away from Palace this summer and is seeking a contract running until 2029 at his next club.

While Palace were unwilling to sell their ‘superstar’ defender mid-season, especially that late in the window, they may now be forced to cash in with just a year left on his deal.

That gives Tottenham hope that a deal could be struck for a player they are looking to potentially pair alongside Micky van de Ven, should Real Madrid make a concrete move for Cristian Romero.

Busy summer ahead for Tottenham

Tottenham are prepping for a busy summer as they look to bolster Ange Postecoglou’s squad to avoid having another underwhelming campaign that has largely been ruined by injuries.

All areas of the Australian’s squad are being scrutinised, although it’s likely that midfield and potentially attack will be the two areas that attract the most attention this summer.

Postecoglou has mixed and matched his engine room for the majority of the season but has never been able to find the right balance, with changes expected come the end of the season.

The ineffective Yves Bissouma is expected to be moved on, while the club have a clause in place that could see them land impressive Real Betis star Johnny Cardoso for a bargain fee.

In terms of attacking targets, Southampton’s Tyler Dibling is a name that keeps on cropping up alongside Palace star Eberechi Eze and Inter Milan star Marcus Thuram.

However, it looks like a swoop for Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo could be off the cards, following the latest developments.

Ange Postecoglou has suffered a blow in his plans to bring Bournemouth star Antoine Semenyo to Tottenham Hotspur this summer after the player was advised to hold out for a move to a “bigger club” and having also been told why a move to north London would “make no sense”.

The Aussie has endured an extremely difficult second season in N17, having seen their efforts to secure a top-four finish long since evaporate and having crashed out of both the FA Cup and Carabao Cups. That effectively means their entire season now rests on their ability to turn around their last-16 Europa League tie against AZ Alkmaar on Thursday night, and with Tottenham Hotspur trailing 1-0 from the first leg.

While Spurs have been hampered by a lengthy injury list this season – a big reason for their struggles – so too could a deteriorating level of quality within their squad, with several regulars not quite up to the standards expected of them this season.

As a result, the club are looking to bring in several high-calibre signings this summer to catapult Spurs back among the country’s top sides.

One man who has been strongly linked in recent weeks is Bournemouth star Semenyo, who has shone with 14-goal contributions (nine goals and five assists) in 31 appearances this season.

However, amid talk of a £33.5m (€40m, $43.6m) move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, the 25-year-old’s compatriot, Matthew Amoah, fears Semenyo would be joining a lesser side if he joined Spurs.

“With all due respect to Tottenham, if this is the only offer that comes to Semenyo this summer, then he should stay at Bournemouth,” Amoah told Africa Foot.

“Bournemouth are currently a better team on the pitch than Tottenham and seem more stable with a very good coach in Andoni Iraola. So, joining a club that is far behind would be a demotion that makes no footballing sense.

“He’s doing his job very well at a club that also appreciates his work and efforts, with fans singing his name day in and day out.”

Semenyo has also been linked with a move to Liverpool this summer as a possible heir to Mo Salah and Amoah thinks the Ghana international should hold out and wait for a bigger move to somewhere like Anfield.

“Unless a much bigger club comes along, he should stay at Vitality. Also, the €40m that is being talked about is below his value in the current market, given his contract, age and ability,” Amoah concluded.

IN-DEPTH ➡️ Four players Tottenham need to sign to end renewed talk of Ange Postecoglou sack

Semenyo stance on Bournemouth exit revealed

Having joined the Cherries in January 2023 from Bristol City, Semenyo has wasted no time in establishing himself as a key member of Ando Iraola’s side and in becoming a Premier League player of real quality.

Indeed, he has racked up an impressive 18 goals and seven assists from 77 appearances, improving all the more experience he gets in the top flight.

That form has attracted attention from both Chelsea and Liverpool this season, both of whom have made checks on the player’s performances.

But the report in Caught Offside over the weekend suggested it was Tottenham who were most likely to pounce, with the 25-times capped star reportedly ‘keen for a big move and to test himself at the highest level.’

Whether Bournemouth would sanction such a move though remains to be seen. Iraola’s side are currently ninth in the Premier League, but just three points adrift of Manchester City in fifth – with a top five place likely to be enough to secure Champions League football next season.

The Cherries are also likely to field interest in a number of top stars this summer, with Milos Kerkez and Dean Huijsen on Liverpool’s radar, and with Tottenham also having been linked with Illia Zabarnyi.

As a result, it is unlikely they would allow all four players to depart, especially if the Cherries do manage to bring European football to the south coast next season.

Furthermore, with Semenyo locked down on a deal to 2029, it would take a sizeable offer for them to cash in.

Tottenham round-up: Spurs sacking imminent; battle on for Feyenoord star

Meanwhile, a major figure at Tottenham Hotspur is reportedly facing being sacked following the club’s failure to properly strengthen Postecoglou’s injury-hit squad during the January window.

Elsewhere, our transfer correspondent Rudy Galetti has listed Tottenham as one of four top suitors in pursuit of a solid Feyenoord defender. Competition also arrives from across London, while two major European sides are also keen on a deal.

And finally, Spurs are also reportedly keeping tabs on a former Everton flop currently starring in Italy, with a view to making a surprise bid for the attacker in the summer window.

A major figure at Tottenham Hotspur is reportedly facing being sacked following the club’s failure to properly strengthen Ange Postecoglou’s injury-hit squad during the January transfer window.

Spurs’ hugely disappointing campaign continued on Sunday when they were held to a 2-2 draw at home by Bournemouth, although it was a game that would have felt more like a win after coming from 2-0 down to earn a point against the Champions League-chasing Cherries.

That result left Tottenham sitting 13th in the table with 10 games to go, while they face their biggest game of the season on Thursday night when they host Dutch outfit AZ in the second leg of their Europa League last-16 clash – trailing 1-0 from the reverse fixture last week.

It’s well documented that injuries have ruined a large part of the campaign for Postecoglou’s men and it was a major surprise that they did not do more to help the Australian in the winter window.

They actually started January well by landing highly-rated young keeper Antonin Kinsky, but then appeared to twiddle their thumbs for the rest of the month before striking loan to buy deals for Kevin Danso and Mathys Tel late on.

And now Spurs insider John Wenham has given a damning verdict on the business the club did, when it was so clear that new recruits were needed.

He claims that technical director Johan Lange is at risk of losing his job, with Daniel Levy ready to wield the axe of the Dane.

“This season has been an absolute disaster,” Wenham told Tottenham News. “Therefore, I wouldn’t say it is without possibility that Lange could be relieved of his duties very quickly at the end of the season. His credibility is pretty low at the moment.

“Daniel Levy and Postecoglou had to get involved to get a deal done for Tel after Lange failed originally. It is embarrassing.

“As a result, I wouldn’t be surprised if the people who have been involved with recent failures, except the ownership, are removed at the end of the season, and that includes Lange.”

Son sick of slow Tottenham starts

Meanwhile, skipper Heung-Min Son has said he and his team-mates need to look within themselves to get the team back on the track.

Speaking after the Bournemouth draw, the South Korean said: “In the first half, they had a couple of good chances, but Vic (Guglielmo Vicario) made a couple of unbelievable, outstanding saves to keep us in the game. Still, I think, 2-2, I’m very disappointed. At home, we should get three points.

“We have to look at ourselves. Nobody can help us except us on the pitch. I think the guys who are playing need to take more responsibility.

“It’s been many, many times where we’ve been sloppy, started sloppy, then go behind and then we’re chasing the game. It’s not the idea.

“We just have to be very strong and make steps forward. You can’t always stay on the same stair. You have to make steps forward.

“It’s March, so we’ve got to improve our stats and our growth. We have to move forwards.”

Tottenham Hotspur look set for a major transfer blow this summer following reports that Real Madrid are preparing to make their move for a £50million defensive target.

Spurs have had some real issues at the back this season, although much of that has been down to the crippling injury crisis that has seen the likes of Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven, Destiny Udogie, Ben Davies and Radu Dragusin all spend time on the sidelines.

Things are thankfully starting to improve, with Romero and Van de Ven both back in action in the 2-2 draw with Bournemouth on Sunday, while Udogie has been featuring recently and Davies is now back in training.

Tottenham did bring in Kevin Danso on loan in January with an option to buy that looks like it will be taken up after some solid performances from the Austria international. However, with Dragusin out until the end of the year with his ACL, they are still expected to be in the market for another centre-back this summer.

Indeed, there is even growing talk that Romero could be offloaded if a concrete offer comes in from long-time suitors Real Madrid, with the Argentine struggling on his return from injury against Bournemouth.

One of many Cherries stars who stood out in that game on Sunday was Spanish defender Dean Huijsen, who recently emerged as a Spurs target for the summer.

Indeed, a recent report suggested that Tottenham are ready to ‘aggressively push’ for the impressive 19-year-old’s signature as part of building their long-term strategy.

Huijsen has certainly won many admirers since his move to Bournemouth from Serie A last summer, having previously been on the books of Juventus. He made just one appearance for the Turin giants and spent last season on loan at Roma before his €18.2million switch to the south coast.

The youngster has made 22 appearances in the Premier League this season, including starring in the 2-2 draw with Spurs on Sunday – showing Ange Postecoglou his qualities first hand.

However, it looks like Tottenham are set to face disappointment in their chase for his signature, with talkSPORT revealing that Huijsen has now emerged a ‘major target’ for Real Madrid.

DON’T MISS ➡️ Tottenham sent big warning over £50m-rated star ‘top clubs will be coming after’

Real ready for defensive rebuild

The defender currently has a contract with Bournemouth until 2030, although that deal contains a £50m release clause which is set to come into effect this summer.

Given the growing interest, it’s common knowledge that the Cherries are pushing to give Huijsen a new deal and increase that exit clause. However, they are fully aware of the clubs that are starting to court the centre-back and are also preparing for the possibility that he could leave – with the likes of Liverpool also showing significant interest.

As for Real’s interest, they are eyeing defensive reinforcements ahead of next season following an injury-hit campaign which has seen stars David Alaba, Eder Militao, Antonio Rudiger and Dani Carvajal all miss action.

Losing out on Huijsen would certainly come as a big blow to Tottenham’s current recruitment strategy, one which also saw them bring in teenagers Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall over the summer.

It now just remains to be seen whether or not Real can convince the Bournemouth to return to his homeland, although he was actually born in Holland before moving to Marbella at the age of five.

Tottenham news: Legendary striker hints at Postecoglou problem with top star after being benched again

Description

Former Tottenham striker Gary Lineker has thrown a theory out there that Ange Postecoglou may have fallen out with one of his key players, following Sunday’s 2-2 Premier League draw with Bournemouth.

Spurs came from 2-0 down to earn a point against the high-flying Cherries in north London, with Pape Sarr and a Son Heung-min penalty cancelling out impressive strikes from Marcus Tavernier and Evanilson for the impressive visitors.

Indeed, Tottenham were outplayed for large parts of the match, especially in the first half, with Postecoglou opting to change up his side ahead of Thursday’s Europa League last-16 second-leg clash with AZ.

There was a welcome return for centre-back Cristian Romero but the Argentine looked incredibly rusty and almost gave a goal within 20 seconds of his comeback before being replaced by Micky van de Ven on the hour mark.

However, it was the surprise exclusion of James Maddison that left Lineker baffled, with Tottenham having no creativity in the middle of the part in the absence of the injured Dejan Kulusevski.

Maddison ended up replacing Rodrigo Bentancur just minutes before Bournemouth grabbed their second, but he at least gave the Spurs midfield some spark as Postecoglou’s men fought back to earn a point.

But speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast with Alan Shearer and Micah Richards, Lineker wondered if there may have been some kind of fall out between Maddison and Postecoglou to explain his absence – especially given that the former Leicester man has been in and out of the side for much of the season.

Lineker began: “Maddison, late coming off the bench again. And when he comes on he always looks the part and played some really good football.

“I’m at a bit of a loss at what’s happened there this season. I wonder whether there’s been a bit of a fall out or…”

Shearer them responded: “What have you heard, Micah?”, with Richards adding: “Nope, I’ve not heard anything from Maddison. I think they’ve got the game in Europe, haven’t they?”

Lineker then ended the conversation: “Maybe, maybe he’s thinking of that.”

DON’T MISS ➡️ FOUR players Tottenham need to sign to end renewed talk of Ange Postecoglou sack

Maddison questions need to be asked

And while there could well be something in not risking Maddison ahead of the AZ clash, the fact that he has been on and off the bench all season does suggest there could be an underlying issue there.

The 28-year-old has struggled with injury issues since his move to north London, but has been fully fit of late and has scored 10 goals in 35 games in all competitions this season, adding seven assists. He has, however, made 12 of his 35 appearances off the bench – failing to get a regular run of starts under his belt.

Postecoglou opted to start the trio of Sarr, Bentancur and Yves Bissouma on Sunday, a combination that rarely works and also leaves Tottenham severely short of creativity.

That changed when Lucas Bergvall and then Maddison entered the fray, with both players almost certain to start in Europe and what is now Spurs’ biggest game of the season. Indeed, the result against AZ could also play a significant part in what the future holds for Postecoglou too.

The familiar issues that have bugged Tottenham all season under Postecoglou were there for all to see again against the Cherries, with poor passing when playing out from the back and getting caught in possession deep in their own half so nearly costing goals.

It does raise the question about how those things are executed in training when they are generally done so poorly in games, which only leads back to one thing – poor coaching methods.

There were positives from Sunday’s draw though, with Van de Ven getting 30 minutes under his belt and Bergvall bouncing back from his disastrous own goal in Holland to turn the game back in Tottenham’s favour.

Tottenham to bid £33.5m for electric Prem winger who’ll spark Richarlison sale

Description

Tottenham Hotspur are planning to ‘test the waters’ with a £33.5m bid for Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo, with a report revealing the winger’s stance on moving as well as the repercussions for Richarlison.

It’s been another rollercoaster of a season for Spurs, with the Europa League the club’s last chance of ending their 17-year wait for a major trophy. But in typical Tottenham fashion, they’ve made it difficult for themselves after losing the first leg of their Round of 16 clash to AZ Alkmaar.

Overcoming their Dutch opponents and going on to win the Europa League would not only add silverware to the cabinet, but would also secure entry into next season’s Champions League.

Whether Spurs are playing in Europe’s top competition next season could have a major bearing on their transfer plans for the summer – both in terms of who can they attract and how much they can pay.

But according to a fresh update from CaughtOffside, Spurs already have one piece of business in mind, irrespective of how their season concludes.

It’s claimed Spurs intend to table a £33.5m bid for Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo who has caught the eye this season with nine goals and five assists across all competitions.

The right-footer can play on either flank and per the report, his arrival would pave the way for Spurs to move on from Richarlison.

The Brazilian has failed to justify his £60m price tag since arriving from Everton and continues to be linked with a switch to the Saudi Pro League.

ICYMI: Richarlison decides to ‘quit’ Tottenham in potential blessing in disguise

Antoine Semenyo stance on leaving Bournemouth revealed

Semenyo primarily plays out wide, while Richarlison has generally been used in the striker position at Spurs.

However, competition for Dominic Solanke in the striker spot could come by way of Spurs triggering their £45m option to buy in Mathys Tel’s loan agreement.

Semenyo would therefore be signed to give Ange Postecoglou another explosive option out wide to battle for starts with Son Heung-min, Brennan Johnson, Wilson Odobert and Mikey Moore. Dejan Kulusevski is another option for the right side, though has been deployed in central areas at times this season.

Regarding Semenyo’s stance on leaving Bournemouth – who are almost certain to finish ahead of Spurs this season – CaughtOffside claimed the 25-year-old is ‘keen for a big move and to test himself at the highest level.’

Bournemouth are flying high this year and still retain hope of qualifying for the Champions League. However, many of their top stars – such as Milos Kerkez (Liverpool) and Dean Huijsen (various clubs) are in demand and expected to be snapped up.

As such, the summer may represent the ideal time for Semenyo to also take that next step in his career and Spurs are already planning a £33.5m bid.

Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly set their sights on bringing back a former academy talent who Jose Mourinho had high hopes for, as a number of clubs chase his signature.

Sunderland left-back Dennis Cirkin is the player in question as the Black Cats star continues to impress with his consistent displays at the Stadium of Light, four years on from walking away from Spurs.

The 22-year-old came through Spurs’ academy and clearly impressed boss at the time Mourinho, who saw plenty of potential in Cirkin when speaking back in November 2019.

The Portuguese coach, now plying his trade in Turkey said: “He’s a kid with a lot of quality, and I look forward to bringing him to train with us and to help his development.”

Things did not go to plan for the defender though, with Cirkin leaving for Wearside in August 2021 and he has been a mainstay for Sunderland as they push for a return to the Premier League.

Cirkin has scored three goals and added two assists in 32 Championship outings for Regis Le Bris’ side, who currently sit fourth in the table, although they remain eight points off the automatic promotion places.

In terms of Tottenham‘s interest, a report from Graeme Bailey via Sunderland AFC News claims that the north London club have continuously tracked Cirkin since his departure and are now seriously weighing up a move for their former youngster.

Ange Postecoglou is actively looking at all areas of his squad in terms of where he could strengthen this summer, and there are concerns over Destiny Udogie’s injury record and the fact that the Italy international has not pushed on since his initial fine form at the start of last season.

The report adds that Tottenham are one of several clubs keeping an eye on Cirkin and could swoop in the summer when he’ll have a year left on his contract. Chelsea, Crystal Palace, West Ham United, Everton and Leeds United have also been monitoring the England U-20 international.

Cirkin will almost certainly be on the move if the Black Cats fail to secure promotion, although there is no mention over what sort of fee he could fetch.

Tottenham not giving up on Udogie just yet

Links to Cirkin have come as somewhat of a surprise given that Udogie remains a major part of Tottenham’s future, while Djed Spence and Archie Gray have also filled in at left-back this season.

Indeed, it could be argued that playing on the left side of the Spurs defence is Spence’s best position, given how he has performed compared to when he’s been on his more natural right side.

There is also a feeling that the club will look to give veteran defender Ben Davies a new deal, with Postecoglou a big fan of the Wales international’s versatility and leadership qualities in the changing room.

Udogie, however, remains a class act when fully fit, with the club expecting him to get back to his best when he puts his nagging issues behind him.

That being said, strength in depth has proved to be a major issue for Tottenham this season, so signing another homegrown talent who has proven to be a quality performer at the top end of the Championship can certainly do no harm.

Tottenham transfers: Spurs sent big warning over £50m

Tottenham Hotspur have been sent a warning that a number of ‘top clubs’ will be coming after a summer signing who has made a huge impression in his debut season for the club.

It’s been a difficult season for Spurs as they sit down in 13th in the Premier League table, having crashed out of both domestic cup competitions – while they also trail AZ in the first leg of their Europa League last-16 clash after a woeful display in the Netherlands last week.

Injuries to key performers have played a major part in those struggles, especially in defence, where first-choice centre-back pairing Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven have been largely absent since early December.

And, with Radu Dragusin out until the end of the year and Ben Davies having his fair share of injury issues too, teenage midfield talent Archie Gray was asked to step into the breach at the back for Tottenham.

The England Under-21 international was signed from Leeds United in a £30m deal over the summer off the back of his work in central midfield and as a makeshift right-back. However, Ange Postecoglou has used the 18-year-old in central defence, given the number of absentees, and Gray has been nothing short of a revelation playing out of position.

Gray has more than held his own playing alongside Dragusin, Davies and January signing Kevin Danso – and former Brentford boss Martin Allen believes Tottenham may have to look over their shoulder if the player continues to excel in a position that is not completely natural to him.

“He’s been absolutely outstanding.” Allen told Tottenham News.

“I thought he’d play as a midfielder but he’s played as a centre back, obviously due to the injuries. He doesn’t get phased by it, he’s such a good player.

“He’s reliable, honest and comes from a great family. I think he’s only going to get better when he moves forward and gets to play in midfield.

“I thought he was a really good signing at £30m, what’s he worth now? I’d set a top target of £50m on him right now but there will be top clubs coming after him no doubt.”

Gray now an undroppable Tottenham asset

Tottenham have been boosted by several of their key stars returning over the past week, with Romero and Van de Ven on the brink of resuming their defensive partnership.

However, Arsenal legend Paul Merson believes Gray has earned the right to keep his place in the side – no matter where he plays going forward.

Speaking on Sky Sports recently, Merson said: “When all these players are fit, I hope Gray plays. I think he has been an absolute credit—the young lad.

“I mean, I don’t know him at all, but from a distance, he turns up every week, plays out of position, and plays in a struggling team at the moment with a worrying number of injuries—and yet he plays every week.

“He isn’t one of those who goes, ‘Hmm, you know what, I might sit this one out.’ But don’t get me wrong, there are players like that. Everybody will have played with players like that—when things aren’t going well, they step back.

“But he turns up every week. I hope he plays when everybody is fit because, honestly, the kid’s been an absolute credit—playing in a position that isn’t his, yet still showing up. Every single week.”

Gray could, however, find himself back on the bench against Bournemouth on Sunday – although there is a chance that Postecoglou utilises him in his natural midfield position instead.

Rodrigo Bentancur will be banned for the second leg of the Europa League last-16 clash with AZ, giving Gray the chance to shine in his best position – assuming that Romero and Van de Ven are good to go for that game.

Taking a look at Gray in midfield against the Cherries certainly makes an awful lot of sense, a position where has he equally impressed in rare cameos this term.
