Arsenal are tonight looking to make a statement as they host Tottenham in the north London derby.

The Gunners crashed out of the FA Cup on Sunday after defeat to 10-man Manchester United, while their Carabao Cup hopes are hanging by a thread following Newcastle’s 2-0 win in north London in the first leg of that semi-final tie.

Mikel Arteta’s side have lost their form in front of goal and have little margin for error if they are to chase down Liverpool in the Premier League title race.

It is a huge occasion and one Tottenham will be eyeing as a chance for a rare win on enemy soil.

Spurs were poor in the FA Cup, needing extra time to edge past non-league Tamworth, but they were hugely impressive before that in beating Liverpool in the Carabao Cup to boost their own trophy hopes.

Consistency has been a problem, though, and they will be wary of an Arsenal side with a point to prove in front of their home fans.

Arsenal vs Tottenham prediction

Arsenal have been so poor in front of goal recently, but this could be the kind of match they need to get the attack firing again.

Spurs will not sit back in a low block and there will be space on offer for the Gunners - the question is whether the hosts can take those chances.

Confidence is fairly low in both camps and it promises to be a nervy affair, but Arsenal’s more reliable defence could prove to be the difference.

Arsenal to win, 2-1.

The Swede was the only one of the four not to start the 3-0 FA Cup third-round win at non-league Tamworth on Sunday, meaning he is fresh to return to the XI against out-of-form Arsenal this evening.

Postecoglou's back five effectively picks itself, with January signing Antonin Kinsky starting a third game in a week in goal and his first ever in the Premier League.

Ben Davies has recovered from a hamstring injury to return to training but is not part of the squad yet as expected, though forwards Richarlison and Mikey Moore are both on the bench.

Brennan Johnson drops out of the Spurs side after struggling to make an impact against part-timers Tamworth over the weekend, while Timo Werner - who also disappointed - has been ruled out with a hamstring injury.

Rodrigo Bentancur (concussion) is not available again, while first-choice defenders Cristian Romero (quad) and Micky van de Ven (hamstring) are not expected to return until the end of the month.

Spurs have only one Premier League win away at Arsenal since 1993

Arsenal vs Tottenham - LIVE!

Arsenal take on Tottenham tonight in what is a huge north London derby for both sides. The Gunners are is desperate need of a positive result to lift the mood having lost to Newcastle and Manchester United in the last week, while Spurs sit 13th in the Premier League table and a long way off the European spots.

The pressure is building on Mikel Arteta, with Arsenal’s trophy hopes taking a big hit in recent days. Goals remain a problem and a long-term injury to Gabriel Jesus has left the Gunners even shorter in attack, meaning Raheem Sterling is handed a rare start. With Liverpool drawing to Nottingham Forest last night, a win here would move Arsenal within four points of the league leaders.

Spurs needed extra-time to get past non-league Tamworth in the FA Cup on Sunday, but there were far more positive signs a few days earlier when they beat Liverpool in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final. Ange Postecoglou’s side are on a four match winless run in the league, though, and are closer to the relegation zone than the top-six. Follow all the action with Standard Sport’s LIVE blog, featuring expert analysis from Simon Collings and Dan Kilpatrick at the ground!

Arsenal vs Tottenham latest news

Arteta: We need Sterling

Mikel Arteta has backed Raheem Sterling to step up for Arsenal and make an impact in the absence of Bukayo Saka.

Arsenal are set to be without Saka until at least March after the winger tore his hamstring last month and underwent surgery.

Manager Arteta has started four different players on the right wing since losing the England star and Sterling makes that five tonight.

Sterling came on for the injured Gabriel Jesus during Sunday’s FA Cup defeat by Manchester United and Arteta was impressed.

“I was really happy with the way he (Sterling) came in [against Manchester United],” said Arteta on the eve of the derby. “Since he had the injury and he came back, you could sense he was going to give us something important.

“Great, because we need him. You could see what he can bring. He is used to playing in this kind of context and the demands that we have, every three days. Great to have him.”

Interesting decisions made by both managers...

Postecoglou: Spurs must embrace special occasion

Ange Postecoglou does not want to play down the significance of tonight’s clash.

He’s urged his Tottenham players to “embrace” the occasion as they look for a rare win on enemy territory.

Spurs have won only once away at Arsenal in the Premier League since 1993, with that sole victory coming 15 years ago.

"It is a special game and we should all embrace part of that,” Postecoglou says.

“It is not just a normal game, it is a little more."

Huge night for Arteta with mood shifting

Just days before he was appointed Arsenal head coach, Mikel Arteta sat in the visiting dugout at Emirates Stadium as part of Manchester City’s backroom staff.

The Spaniard left feeling down and with a sense Arsenal had lost their way, such was the mood at the club.

It’s why changing the atmosphere at the Emirates was one of Arteta’s first aims when he was hired and remains one of his key objectives.

Arteta has given his blessing and been involved in pre-match hype videos on social media, while he was also a big driver behind the club’s decision to play the song ‘The Angel (North London Forever)’ by Louis Dunford before games.

The atmosphere at the Emirates has dramatically improved under Arteta, but it was telling this week that he felt the need to call for more.

Two defeats last week has dampened the mood around Arsenal and there are the first few grumblings of discontent.

It is nothing like the toxic final days of Arsene Wenger, or the apathetic ending to Unai Emery’s reign, but there is not the same wave of enthusiasm that felt present during Arsenal’s title charges over the past two seasons.

It is hard to escape the feeling that Arteta needs to come out of this north London derby with a positive result.

Arteta eyeing Arsenal trophy...

Out of the FA Cup, a mountain to climb in the Carabao Cup, but Mikel Arteta still believes.

Arsenal boss is adamant club can still win a trophy this season and there is still plenty to play for.

Victory tonight and they will be only four points off Liverpool, though Arne Slot’s side would have a game in hand.

Simon Collings at the Emirates Stadium

Raheem Sterling now the 5th different player to start on the right wing for Arsenal since Bukayo Saka got injured last month.

Odegaard: Felt like I let the team down

Martin Odegaard has spoken about the responsibility he feels for Arsenal’s FA Cup exit to Manchester United.

Odegaard missed a penalty in normal time as the match went to a shootout, where he then scored from the spot but it was not enough.

Writing in his programme notes, the Arsenal captain says: “It was really tough to take on Sunday – it was very frustrating for everyone.

“On the pitch I had the feeling that we dominated the game from the first half until the end. We could have been sharper in front of goal and also in the last pass and the final shot.

“But to lose that game at home when we dominated everything, it’s a tough one to take.

“And of course I have to take responsibility for the penalty. I should have scored – that’s not good enough from me.

“It was a crucial moment of the game as well because I think if I scored that, we probably go on to win the game. I felt like I’d let the team down, so it was important for me to step up again in the shoot-out, and I wanted to go first like usual.

“It was good that one went in, but in the end it wasn’t enough, so I still feel that responsibility to the team.”

Arsenal are increasingly short of options in attack, with Gabriel Jesus stretchered off against Manchester United after suffering a knee injury. Arteta has confirmed he is “very worried” about the striker.

Bukayo Saka and Ethan Nwaneri remain unavailable, while Riccardo Calafiori is a major doubt after missing the United defeat. Raheem Sterling could be handed a rare start as Arteta looks for a solution on the right wing.

Tottenham have significant injury problems themselves, and will once again be without the likes of Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven and Guglielmo Vicario.

Antonio Kinsky will get his first taste of a north London derby in goal, and Dominic Solanke, Heung-min Son and Dejan Kulusevski should all return to the starting lineup having come off the bench against Tamworth.

Arsenal have been so poor in front of goal recently, but this could be the kind of match they need to get the attack firing again.

Premier League sides could be forced into January action

Matt Verri3 hours ago

Transfer news LIVE!

Arsenal are said to be keen on Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo, who wants to leave Spain this month as the January transfer window hots up. Elsewhere, £70million-rated Khvicha Kvaratskhelia has confirmed his desire to leave Napoli, with Paris Saint-Germain in pole position. Napoli are eyeing Alejandro Garnacho as a replacement.

PSG are expected to let striker Randal Kolo Muani leave on loan, with Tottenham and Manchester United very interested, along with Juventus who reportedly feel they have the edge over the Premier League pair. Kolo Muani's possible arrival at Old Trafford should see Marcus Rashford depart, while Kobbie Mainoo also faces an uncertain future. Chelsea, meanwhile, have reportedly entered talks with Bayern over teenage striker Mathys Tel, while they remain interested in Marc Guehi.

Tottenham have entered the race for Rashford, and Arsenal have also been credited with interest. The Gunners are in need of a forward and have been linked with a host of them this month, including Bryan Mbeumo, Jhon Duran, and Nico Williams. Now Joao Gomes is a reported target. Man City are closing in on a £80m double deal for Abdukodir Khusanov and Omar Marmoush. Follow the latest transfer news, rumours and gossip live below!

Napoli turn to Werner as Kvaratskhelia replacement

An interesting late line out of Italy as Napoli are weighing up a move for Timo Werner.

Napoli need to replace Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who is set to join Paris Saint-Germain, and their top target is Manchester United’s Alejandro Garnacho.

However, Gianluca Di Marizio reports that tonight Napoli have begun exploring a deal for Werner after United demanded £70million for Garnacho.

Werner is currently on loan at Tottenham from RB Leipzig, and Di Marzio reports that Spurs could be open to cutting that deal short.

The forward, who joined on loan 12 months ago, has rarely impressed for Spurs and on Sunday struggled against non-league outfit Tamworth.

Millwall manager Alex Neil has confirmed that Crystal Palace are progressing in talks with a deal to sign Romain Esse.

Esse was absent from the squad as Millwall beat Dagenham and Redbridge in the FA Cup third round. Asked for a reason after the game, Neil said: "There wasn’t an issue.

"Crystal Palace have shown a lot of interest [and] I didn’t make him available for game. That situation is progressing and I didn’t want to put it at risk at this stage."

New Tottenham goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky ready to meet key Arsenal threat in north London derby

Submitted by daniel on
Picture

Description

The decision to start Antonin Kinsky against Tamworth was made in order to get Tottenham’s new signing another valuable 90 minutes under his belt ahead of the North London Derby on Wednesday.

What no one expected was quite how involved in proceedings the 21-year-old would turn out to be, or that his concentration would be needed for all of 120 minutes, as the non-league side took Tottenham to extra-time before Spurs pulled away to win 3-0 in Sunday’s FA Cup third round tie at the Lamb Ground.

The fact Kinsky’s afternoon was far busier than anticipated is no bad thing. Particularly pertinent was the fact the Czech goalkeeper came confidently to collect five crosses throughout the match, and dealt well with the eccentric threat of Tommy Tonks’ remarkably long throw-ins, hurled right into the melee.

Tottenham’s opponents on Sunday were a world away from their bitter rivals Arsenal, who they visit at the Emirates on Wednesday. Their approaches to set pieces — seeking to cause havoc and cash in — were, however, extremely similar.

No Premier League team have scored more goals from set plays than Arsenal this season, and Spurs know all too well about that, having lost the reverse fixture at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in September by a solitary goal from Gabriel.

It was scored after Ben White and William Saliba surrounded goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, denying the Italian the opportunity to come to collect the corner. Even if he’d been able, it would have been too late. Gabriel leapt up and headed in the winner.

It was a goal Arsenal had scored plenty of times before and have repeated many times since. It was also part of a wider trend of teams targeting Spurs goalkeeper Vicario. Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville famously said Vicario has “frogs in his pants” and makes him nervous, and teams have made a deliberate attempt to put pressure on Vicario from corners and free-kicks, feeling they can dominate the space around him and score past him while doing so.

With Vicario still sidelined with an ankle fracture, Kinsky will start against Arsenal on Wednesday, and Ange Postecoglou will have been left feeling hopeful that the Czech youth international can cope with the Gunners’ exceptional set pieces.

Just as important, though, are all the other aspects of goalkeeping. Kinsky made two decent saves down low against Tamworth, while six of his eight long passes found their intended target. His distribution had first caught the eye on his debut against Liverpool in the Carabao Cup semi-final first-leg win on Wednesday.

The way he kept that clean-sheet on his very first appearance for Spurs — and first appearance since the Czech league paused for winter — will have calmed Postecoglou about the club’s goalkeeper crisis. So too will his confident passes to unmarked teammates.

It will also have confirmed in the minds of many that for £12.5million plus add-ons, Spurs appear to have struck gold in the January transfer window by luring Kinsky away from Slavia Prague.

FA Cup draw LIVE! Man Utd, Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham learn fourth round fate with Arsenal out

The FA Cup fourth round draw takes place this afternoon at the Emirates Stadium following Arsenal’s home defeat by holders Manchester United, the blockbuster clash of the third round that ended with a dramatic penalty shootout. The action began back on Thursday, and we’ve already had Premier League sides knocked out as 64 teams are eventually whittled down to 32.

Graham Potter was unable to kick his West Ham tenure off with a win as Aston Villa confirmed their place in the hat for the next round, before Liverpool made easy work of milk advert colleagues Accrington Stanley, Chelsea thrashed Morecambe and Manchester City put eight past Salford. Brentford lost at home to Championship strugglers Plymouth in a sizable upset, with Hull and Oxford among the second-tier teams to fall to lower EFL opponents.

Earlier on Sunday, Tottenham eventually saw off non-league part-timers Tamworth, the lowest-ranked team in the third round, after a huge scare and extra time as Ange Postecoglou began another cup run in his second season in charge. Follow the FA Cup fourth round draw live below!
