Tottenham 1-0 Liverpool: Late Lucas Bergvall winner gives Spurs semi-final advantage in Carabao Cup

Lucas Bergvall’s 86th-minute strike gave Tottenham a 1-0 win over Liverpool in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final tie.

After a 6-3 win for the Reds when these sides met just a few weeks ago in the Premier League, expectations were high for plenty more goals and another action-packed encounter.

It was a more controlled affair, though, with 11 minutes of stoppage-time played in the first-half after Rodrigo Bentancur was stretchered off, having landed awkwardly when trying to flick on a header at the near post.

Dominic Solanke thought he had broken the deadlock with 15 minutes to be remaining, only for VAR to rule it out for an incredibly tight offside goal.

The Spurs striker played his role when the goal did come, running in behind and laying the ball off for Bergvall to sweep home, a timely moment for his first goal for the club.

Liverpool were furious that Bergvall was on the pitch to provide that winner, arguing minutes earlier that he should have been dismissed for a second yellow card having slid in and wiped out Kostas Tsimikas.

Only six minutes were on the clock when a lengthy stoppage occurred due to a head injury for Bentancur.

The midfielder was taken off on a stretcher in the 15th minute after he appeared to head the floor from a corner - with Radu Dragusin denied by Alisson Becker moments later.

Spurs later confirmed Bentancur was conscious and talking and would go to hospital for further checks.

The stop-start nature of the tie continued with young Liverpool centre-back Jarell Quansah forced off not long after Mohamed Salah had curled wide from outside the penalty area.

Kinsky made his first save after 33 minutes but it was a routine stop from Alexis Mac Allister's header before Liverpool upped the ante in first-half stoppage time.

Salah chipped over after a fine run by Cody Gakpo, who almost surprised Kinsky soon after with a long-range shot before the Dutch forward curled off target as it remained goalless at the break.

Clear-cut opportunities had been few and far between until the 56th minute when Spurs should have taken the lead.

Bergvall brilliantly slide in on Alisson to win possession inside Liverpool's penalty area and Pedro Porro was played in, but chipped wide much to Postecoglou's frustration.

Slot made a triple substitution on the hour mark with Trent Alexander-Arnold, Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez introduced, but Salah was kept on the pitch.

The Egyptian almost helped create the breakthrough with 21 minutes left when he played through Nunez only for Kinsky to stand up well to block the shot.

Alexander-Arnold did manage to beat Kinsky from a tight angle moments later but Dragusin got back to clear off the line before Mac Allister dragged his follow-up wide.

Postecoglou had seen enough and replaced captain Son Heung-min with Werner, who immediately raced past Alexander-Arnold but sent his effort into the side-netting.

It lifted the home team and Tottenham thought they had taken the lead in the 76th-minute when Solanke latched on to Porro's perfectly weighted pass and rolled past Alisson.

VAR was required and Solanke's effort was eventually ruled out for offside, which referee Stuart Attwell announced to the whole stadium in a first for English football.

Attwell had another decision to make when Bergvall caught Tsimikas late, but the already booked Swedish midfielder avoided a sending-off and made his second life count with four minutes left.

Solanke impressively held off Ibrahima Konate and teed up Bergvall to drill into the bottom corner from 12 yards to spark big celebrations.

Bergvall escaped a second yellow card for a foul on Kostas Tsimikas and, just two minutes later, stroked home from Dominic Solanke’s lay-off.

The goal means Spurs have one fit in the final ahead of the second leg at Anfield on February 6.

Very convincing debut from the Czech goalkeeper, whose distribution was an instant hit with the Tottenham fans and just what was needed. Made a remarkable late save to deny Darwin Nunez.

Pushed up high on the right wing. Missed a glorious chance in the second half when he dinked wide after an Alisson mistake.

You can see he is also a midfielder in the way he so bravely marauds out from the back. Brave.

Played really well, especially in the first half, skipping past challenges with tidy touches and close control.

An important stopping force to Liverpool’s attacks, putting important challenges in and scanning his surroundings constantly. Full of energy throughout. Yellow for one mistimed tackle, and fortunate to avoid red for a later foul before scoring a sensational winner.

Got beaten in a few tackles but put in a busy enough display.

An immediate injury concern after leaving the pitch on a stretcher following an eight-minute stoppage in the first half. It came after the Uruguayan went down awkwardly, face first, after stretching for an uncontested header.

Without ever impacting the game in the way he might have wanted, the Swede dropped deep to receive and could be relied upon when dribbling.

A little too slow when dribbling forward with the ball. Hooked after 72 minutes and replaced by Timo Werner.

Ran in behind, as he always will, but didn’t always get the desired service. Assisted the winner after excellent hold-up play.

Tottenham vs Liverpool - LIVE!

Tottenham look to keep their bid for a first trophy since 2008 alive as they host Liverpool in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final tonight. Not since winning this competition 16 years ago have Spurs got their hands on some silverware, and the pressure is on Ange Postecoglou after he stated he always wins a trophy in his second season at a club.

It is now five matches without a win, though for Spurs, after they were beaten by Newcastle over the weekend to leave them 12th in the Premier League. Injuries have been a problem and the absentee list has been added to tonight, with Pape Matar Sarr and James Maddison both suspended.

Liverpool, on the other hand, are flying on all fronts, and sit six points clear at the top of the Premier League with a game in hand. They were held to a draw by Manchester United last time out, but will be in confident mood heading to north London, having thrashed Spurs 6-3 here just a few weeks ago. Kinsky agents reveals 'intense' Levy talks

New Tottenham goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky was signed after chairman Daniel Levy headed up a two-day negotiation with the player's former club Slavia Prague in the Czech capital.

Levy and Spurs technical director Johan Lange spent two days in Prague as they organised the final details of Kinsky’s move to Tottenham in a deal worth £12.5million plus add-ons.

Speaking to Flashscore, Viktor Kolar, Kinsky’s agent, said: “Our team was still sitting at a petrol station in Prague until almost 10pm of December 31, because everything was closed on New Year's Eve.

“The subsequent development was that on January 1, Daniel Levy flew in himself and the two-day negotiations in Prague began. He had Johan Lange with him.

“The negotiations were intense, stretching late into the night. But it worked, and I’m happy about that. It was a beautiful test to see if people and organizations this dominant can find their way to each other.”

Postecoglou makes bold Salah claim

Ange Postecoglou believes Heung-min Son will return to his best when Tottenham's injury crisis has eased and says Liverpool's Mohamed Salah would struggle to hit the same standards if he was playing for Spurs.

Son and Salah, both 32, shared the Premier League Golden Boot in 2021-22, finishing with 23 goals apiece, but so far this season Son has scored just five times in the top-flight, while Salah has 18 goals, as well as 13 assists.

Postecoglou, who is expected to be without nine first-team players against the Reds tonight, believes Son's form can be explained by the dysfunction of the depleted team around him.

"It's been unbelievable how [Sonny] has been able to maintain that level of consistent performance," Postecoglou said. "I know everyone is focusing on it now but even last year his season was incredible for us.

"People need to have a little bit of context. Mo is a world-class player but if you put him in our team now I'm not sure he'll have that same level of performance because of the situation we're in as a group.

“As an attacking player, what do you need? You need a team that's kind of in good form creating opportunities, playing on the front foot, having a really solid foundation of a defence that is cohesive.

"None of these things exist at the moment.”

In the building!

The Spurs players have arrived ahead of a huge night in north London...

Standard Sport prediction

Liverpool put six past Spurs in their own backyard last month and it’s hard to see the gap between the two sides suddenly being closed.

Spurs’ injury woes have only worsened since, but have also proven they can breach the Reds’ backline. They will hope to still be in the tie come full-time tonight.

Liverpool to win, 3-1.

Liverpool team news

Liverpool will tonight have an almost fully fit squad to choose from.

Both Ibrahima Konate and Conor Bradley returned from injuries suffered during the Champions League win over Real Madrid in November for Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Manchester United at Anfield.

Having both available gives Arne Slot options, particularly at right-back. While Trent Alexander-Arnold is undoubtedly the first-choice there, his performance against United was heavily criticised amid transfer interest from Real Madrid.

Bradley is pushing to come in and replace Alexander-Arnold.

Dominik Szoboszlai missed Sunday's game due to illness and remains a slight doubt. Joe Gomez is the only injured player following the hamstring injury he suffered against West Ham in late December.

Darwin Nunez was booked against United and will miss Liverpool’s next Premier League match, but is available here.

Predicted Liverpool XI (4-2-3-1): Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Konate, Van Dijk, Tsimikas; Gravenberch, Mac Allister; Salah, Jones, Gakpo; Jota

Tottenham and Liverpool tonight face off in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final.

Spurs, for all their faults, generally entertain while playing at home and did put three past the Reds last month, albeit in a chaotic 6-3 defeat.

With Ange Postecoglou continuing to divide opinion in the dugout, the final four meeting this evening feels like a huge moment in his tenure.

Liverpool, meanwhile, are absolutely flying and will feel confident about reaching Wembley to defend the final trophy ever won by Jurgen Klopp during his spell at the club.

Tottenham: Ange Postecoglou reveals why even Mohamed Salah would struggle at Spurs

Description

Ange Postecoglou believes Heung-min Son will return to his best when Tottenham's injury crisis has eased and says Liverpool's Mohamed Salah would struggle to hit the same standards if he was playing for Spurs.

Postecoglou's side host Liverpool for the second time in a little over two weeks in Wednesday's Carabao Cup semi-final first leg, with the head coach still dealing with the selection crisis which has ravaged his squad for most of the winter.

Son and Salah, both 32, shared the Premier League Golden Boot in 2021-22, finishing with 23 goals apiece, but so far this season Son has scored just five times in the top-flight, while Salah has 18 goals, as well as 13 assists.

Postecoglou, who is expected to be without nine first-team players against the Reds, believes Son's form can be explained by the dysfunction of the depleted team around him.

"None of these things exist at the moment. We're relying on individual moments and you can say the same about Dom [Solanke], [Dejan] Kulusevski and Brennan [Johnson], because they are playing all the time. They're doing the best they can.

"Mo is an unbelievable player but he’s playing in a fantastic team that are flying at the moment. I’d hazard to say that if you put Sonny in Liverpool’s team, I reckon his goalscoring return would be decent.

“It’s hard for our players at the moment. Guys like Solanke and Kulusevski and Johnson, they’re trying awfully hard to be the best they can be.

“But there is context to that in that we are a team that is very disrupted, that is not playing with a fluency that it can play with. We’re asking players to play in positions that they are totally unfamiliar with. That has an effect.

“To me, it’s about context. But when we’re at our best, I still think you’ll see Sonny’s return, in terms of his ability to score goals and be really effective for us, I don’t think that’s diminished at all. Yeah, he’s going through a tough trot but we’re going through a tough trot. That goes hand in hand."

Spurs are set to welcome Mikey Moore, 17, back to the bench on Wednesday after more than two months out with a virus but Richarlison is not expected to return to the squad until next week, as Spurs take a cautious approach with the Brazilian's latest return from injury. Wilson Odobert remains sidelined long-term.

Asked if Solanke, the former Liverpool forward, could be more selfish in front of goal, the Australian said: "His numbers would be better if we were better. You’ve got to cut these guys some slack.

“They can’t do it all on their own. We’re struggling as a team for consistency, energy, cohesion - understandably so. You can’t expect strikers to go score hat-tricks on the back of that.

"Even on the weekend he [Solanke] scored an unbelievable goal [against Newcastle], had a couple of headers where he was unlucky, he’s still getting in those areas. He’s doing the absolute maximum and his numbers will get better when we get better."

Ahead of the game, Spurs triggered a one-year extension in Son's contract to tie him to the club until the end of next season but Postecoglou is relaxed about the forward's long-term future.

"When you’ve got a player like Sonny who has such a standing at a club, and I know how highly the club regards him, and I know how much he loves the club … I just think it’ll all happen mutually," the Australian said

"It’s not something that needs to be forced one way or another. I don’t think the club will be in a position of trying to force anything or Sonny would try and force anything. There is enough respect and credit between both parties that those kind of discussions will happen naturally. And I think it will come to a conclusion that everyone is happy with.

"I don’t want to speak on behalf of [Son]," Postecoglou added, when asked if Son wanted to sign a long-term extension. "I think what Sonny wants is for us to win tomorrow night. That’s where his head space is at at the moment."

Tottenham’s objective is clear before Liverpool semi-final as Ange Postecoglou waits for cavalry

Description

A handful of new or returning faces have lifted Tottenham's training ahead of Wednesday's Carabao Cup semi-final first leg against Liverpool, with January signings Antonin Kinsky and Min-hyeok Yang joined by Richarlison and Mikey Moore to give Ange Postecoglou's group a more robust feel for the first time in weeks.

While Kinsky, the 21-year-old goalkeeper signed from Slavia Prague, is in contention to start against Liverpool and Moore could be among the subs, Richarlison is still not match-fit and Yang, 18, is not ready for meaningful minutes.

The reality is that Postecoglou's squad remains stretched to the limit against the Premier League leaders, particularly with midfielders James Maddison and Pape Matar Sarr suspended, and in little better state than for the 6-3 home defeat to the Reds on December 22.

Postecoglou has poured over the home drubbing by Arne Slot's side two-and-a-half weeks ago, using the display as "a reference point" to plan for what feels like a hugely significant occasion in Spurs' difficult season.

The Australian felt his side did some things "really well" and others "really poorly", but above all he wants his side to handle the big moments better.

"You think we’re going in at 2-1, we always finish strong," he said. "And then we conceded a really poor goal. Some of it is just focus and organisation. Those are the kind of things you reflect on. They capitalised. We got really stretched which suited them. There were learnings from it.

"And because it was so recent, you certainly use that as a foundation for the kind of game we need tomorrow in terms of addressing it a bit differently."

Spurs visibly struggled to match Liverpool's energy and their hopes of recuperating during a rare week off ahead of last weekend's defeat to Newcastle were disrupted by a sickness bug, which hit Radu Dragusin, Archie Gray and Fraser Forster, among others.

"We ended up doing more running than we needed to because the game became so stretched," Postecoglou added. "So there are things we need to do better to try and control the game and control how much running we need to do.

"We still want to play at a high tempo and the players are maintaining that intensity. It’s just that against Liverpool you’ve got to have an element of control around it."

Spurs lined-up with a back four of Pedro Porro, Dragusin, Gray and Djed Spence last month, with the latter two playing out of position, and it is expected to be the same tomorrow, although Kinsky or Brandon Austin will likely replace Forster between the sticks.

For all his frustrations at Spurs' Premier League form, Postecoglou is wary of being too hard on his players given the patched-up nature of his back line, which will again be missing Micky van de Ven, Cristian Romero, Ben Davies and Destiny Udogie.

"I've got to temper those frustrations because we've got an 18-year-old, who's not a centre-back, playing centre-back," Postecoglou said. "A left who's not a left-back. A goalkeeper that was not there from the start. There are so many things that are so disjointed in our defensive set up, those things are going to happen."

Holding on for a result at Anfield in the second-leg of a knockout is an approach few opponents would take against Liverpool but for Spurs there is logic in simply staying in the tie and trying to do real damage to Slot's team on February 6.

If Liverpool's gap at the top of the table narrows before the deciding leg (and they face joint-second Nottingham Forest next week), then Slot's view of the Carabao Cup, as well as Postecoglou's options, may radically change in the next month.

"There is a second leg to be played," said Postecoglou, who believes winning the competition could be a huge moment for his young squad.

"That doesn’t change our approach tomorrow. We’re at home and in a two-legged affair, if you can get some kind of advantage in your home game, you are set up pretty well so that’s what we will try to do.

"Our League form is really poor, we need to improve, but we are in a semi-final of a competition and with the group of players we’ve got at the moment, if we can achieve something where they are in their careers, I think it does set you up really well for what we’re trying to build here," he added.

"It’s not the be all and end all, as I’ve said many times, but if we get a final and happen to win a trophy, we’ll look back on this period of where we are, a small group of players having to rise above and beyond to get there, I think that will be as worthy of the achievement as actually winning it."

Liverpool XI vs Tottenham: Confirmed team news, predicted lineup, injury latest for Carabao Cup today

Reds have almost clean bill of health heading into semi-final first leg

Jonathan Gorrie57 seconds ago

Liverpool will tonight have an almost fully fit squad from which to choose for their Carabao Cup semi-final first leg at Tottenham.

Bradley is at least an option to come into the side, although the England international is expected to start.

"It will benefit every player,” said Slot on Tuesday about the prospect of Alexander-Arnold playing.

“Every played not on the pitch would love to play tomorrow as well. Almost all of them are fit. That is quite special. I will highlight they show up every three days."

Spurs largely dominated against Manchester United in the quarter-finals but eventually only squeezed through to the final four with a dramatic 4-3 victory at home.

Ange Postecoglou’s side, however, are in dire form and were beaten 2-1 at home by Newcastle on Saturday to make it six defeats in seven, including a 6-3 home loss to the Reds last month.

Liverpool, on the other hand, were able to rotate heavily in their 2-1 quarter-final win away at Southampton last month.

Sitting pretty in the Premier League and the Champions League, Arne Slot’s side were held a dramatic 2-2 draw with United on Sunday.

Here’s everything you need to know about the game.

Tottenham vs Liverpool is scheduled for an 8pm GMT kick-off time tonight, Wednesday, January 8, 2025.

TV channel: The game will be broadcast on Sky Sports Main Event, Sky Sports Premier League and Sky Sports Ultra HDR. Coverage starts at 7pm.

Live stream: Subscribers will be able to watch on a live stream via the Sky Go app.

Spurs remain without a raft of key first-team players. All of Destiny Udogie, Micky van de Ven, Cristian Romero, Ben Davies, Wilson Odobert and Richarlison expected to miss out.

Radu Dragusin will be fit for the game despite coming off at half-time against Newcastle, while Mikey Moore could be on the bench.

January signing Antonin Kinsky will hope to be involved, with Postecoglou confirming a decision will be made on the new goalkeeper.

Liverpool will be without Joe Gomez. Dominik Szoboszlai missed the United game due to illness and remains a doubt.

Liverpool put six past Spurs in their own backyard last month and it’s hard to see the gap between the two sides suddenly being closed.

Spurs’ injury woes have only worsened since, but have also proven they can breach the Reds’ backline. They will hope to still be in the tie come full-time tonight.
