Tottenham: Dejan Kulusevski reveals how Spurs 'got back to principles' in Manchester United win

Dejan Kulusevski says a rare week off enabled Tottenham to "get back to our principles" in Sunday's 1-0 win over Manchester United, as he targeted success in the Europa League and a long “winning streak" in the Premier League.

James Maddison's goal earned Ange Postecoglou's side a scrappy victory in north London at the end of a first clear week for Spurs since the turn of the year.

Maddison was one of five players to return to Postecoglou's squad after injury, with the playmaker and goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario both going straight into the starting XI.

Spurs crashed out of both domestic cups last week to leave their season hinging on progress in Europe and remain well adrift of the top eight in the league, but Kulusevski remains optimistic that they can finish the campaign strongly now their injuries are clearing.

“[Last week] was very rough but you can’t be emotional," the Swede said. "When you give everything you had, when you prepare yourself 100 per cent, you can't look back. It didn't go as I wanted or we wanted but the day after I didn’t care. Because you can’t have regrets when you give everything.

"We needed this week of rest, we need it a lot...[to] start training, get back to our principles, get some players back and it was a good win.

"[A rest] is very important, especially for the long-term also because in the end you want to be superman but you can’t deny [the reality of] things.

"I really needed that week, to get away for two days with the family because we don’t spend a lot of time with our families when we play every day and sleep at hotels, so you want to have a life also. In the long run, I think it will make a difference.

"Also physically we have had some [injury] problems and we try to fix them. But it's hard when you play every day so it was very good for everyone.

"To play football you need energy," he continued. "You need a lot of energy and sometimes you can't find it and we had to show it [against United].

"The only thing I care about in life is 'never give up'. Everything else can happen, I don't care, but the only thing I never want to see in football is playing with your head down. So always do your best. So [the aim is to] win the Europa League and go on a winning streak in the Premier League. That’s my goal at least."

On his first appearance in three weeks due to a calf strain, Maddison settled a low-quality, end-to-end game against United when he reacted quickest to Andre Onana parrying Lucas Bergvall's shot to side-foot home the winner after 13 minutes.

Vicario, who had been sidelined since suffering a fractured foot against Manchester City on November 23, was also influential, making a string of saves on his return, including a smart one-handed stop to keep out Alejandro Garnacho's fierce drive.

"I’m a huge fan of Vicario. Like a huge, huge fan. His energy is unmatched, he is fantastic. I told him, ‘When you come back the whole stadium needs to feel it’. That's what he does. He's an unbelievable goalkeeper. He made a couple of saves and, so with him back, it’s a big, big player.

"He’s a professional, he’s in the gym every day. He's every day happy, he wants to get better and he’s Italian! So I have a great bond with him and it was good to have him back. The last game he played was the 4-0 [win] at Man City, so we missed him a lot."

Spurs recorded back-to-back wins in the league for the first time since September, when they also beat Brentford and United, and made it three victories over the Red Devils this term – with Kulusevski aware that they could still meet again in the Europa League.

"We beat them three times and played very good games against them, but they are still a very good team and it’s never easy to beat United, but maybe we’ll see them [in the Europa League] in a couple of months," he said.

"Nothing is better than winning, it’s the most important thing because it gives you energy, it gives you belief and in football you need those things."

James Maddison scored the only goal as Tottenham responded to crashing out of both domestic cups last week with a much-needed 1-0 win over Manchester United.

Maddison, who was one of five players to return to Ange Postecoglou’s squad after injury, reacted quickest when Andre Onana parried Lucas Bergvall’s shot to put Spurs ahead after 13 minutes.

A depleted United had a succession of chances to equalise, with Guglielmo Vicario – also back in the Spurs team – saving brilliantly from Alejandro Garnacho in the second half.

But Spurs held on to record back-to-back wins in the Premier League for the first time since September.

Made a string of sharp saves on his first appearance since November, including a brilliant one-armed stop from Garnacho’s fierce drive.

Looked refreshed after a week off and was involved in the build-up to Maddison’s goal. Still prone to getting caught up the pitch, however, including for a huge Garnacho chance.

Excellent on his home debut, making a number of important interventions, including a last-ditch sliding tackle to dispossess Rasmus Hojlund.

In the right place to clear Diogo Dalot’s shot off the line at 0-0 in a composed and solid display.

Outstanding at both ends of the pitch. Constantly carried the ball forward with purpose and took on his man, while making a series of crucial defensive actions, including a brilliant block to deny Rasmus Hojlund. Destiny Udogie should not get straight back into the side.

Ran rings around Casemiro in the midfield and made the opening goal when his effort was parried by Onana.

Improved after his dreadful display at Villa Park last weekend but could be more assertive with and without the ball.

Full of beans on an impressive return to the side, reacting quickest to open the scoring after Onana spilled Bergvall’s shot.

Extended Onana with a low shot late on and looked more energetic after a week off.

Produced a lively display from the left, suggesting that he too had benefited from a rest.

Forced more than one save from Onana during a game when a number of chances and half-chances fell his way. Looks lively and intelligent but his hold-up play needs work.

Manchester United player ratings vs Tottenham: Casemiro shocker as Andre Onana errors continue

Manchester United remain 15th in the Premier League table after they lost 1-0 away to Tottenham on Sunday.

James Maddison scored the only goal of the game in the 13th minute for Spurs in a crucial victory for the under-pressure Ange Postecoglou.

At fault for the only goal as he pushed Lucas Bergvall’s effort right into the path of the unmarked Maddison. A save on 79 minutes from Dejan Kulusevski was important but did not make up for the earlier error.

Didn’t win as many headers as usual. Did okay in a defence largely rattled by Spurs’ high press.

Stood static as Maddison stole in for the goal. Wasted possession with long passes which were overhit.

Won some key aerial battles and produced a couple of important blocks, yet found Djed Spence very difficult to pin down.

Looks a fine signing by United. Can bomb on, but not afraid of doing his defensive duties either. Booked.

Deserved an assist for the way he found Garnacho in acres of space in the first half. Energetic. His passing a constant threat.

Had a bit of a shocker. Booked in the first half, given the runaround by Lucas Bergvall, and played passes into touch.

Not his usual lively self down the flank. Missed one chance early on.

Missed a huge chance in the first half when he blazed over from Fernandes’s threaded ball. Forced Guglielmo Vicario into two saves after the break.

Curled wide with a shot in the first half. Displayed his excellent first touch on occasion by plucking the ball out of the sky.

Forced Vicario into an early save from the right. Too often caught offside.

Tottenham fans turn on Daniel Levy as thousands gather for biggest protest yet against owners

At least two thousand Tottenham supporters joined a protest against the club's owners ENIC and chairman Daniel Levy ahead of Sunday's home game against Manchester United.

The protest, organised by the fans' group Change for Tottenham (CFT), began on the High Road two hours before the 4.30pm kick-off and proceeded to the stadium, where it continued outside the ground. There were also plans for a sit-in in the South Stand after full-time.

There was widespread chanting against Levy and ENIC, including calls for the embattled chairman to “get out of our club” and protestors held up banners.

CFT's banners read '24 years, 16 years, 1 trophy, time for change' - a reference ENIC's record since their takeover in 2001 - and 'Our game is about glory, Levy's game is about greed'.

Other supporters brought homemade banners or adapted flags, with one reading 'You sold a soul you didn't own' and another 'We want our club back'.

There appeared to be at least two thousand protestors taking part, making it the most consequential protest yet against Levy and ENIC's ownership.

Since mid-December, some Spurs fans have chanted for Levy to stand down during matches, as the club's results have nosedived.

Spurs were 14th in the table going into the Manchester United game and crashed out of both domestic cups last week, leaving their season dependent on progress in the Europa League.

Many supporters blame Levy's cautious running of the club for their plight, although head coach Ange Postecoglou has said the chronic injury crisis which has hit his squad this winter is to blame for results.

Spurs have the lowest wages-to-turnover ratio of all leading European clubs analysed in the most recent Deloitte Money League - at just 42 per cent - though their net spend over the past five years is over £450million.

In a statement released before the protest, CFT said: "As passionate supporters of Tottenham Hotspur, we believe it’s time for real change in how our football club is run.

“We want a club that prioritises footballing ambition over commercial interests, respects its traditions, and listens to its fans.

“We call for greater accountability in decision-making, investment in the squad that reflects our stature, and the fulfilment of promises made - including the long-overdue Bill Nicholson statue to honour the man who defined our values.

Tottenham take on Manchester United today in a battle of two big Premier League clubs enduring nightmare seasons. Both Ruben Amorim and Ange Postecoglou are under the spotlight amid dreadful form and, with their sides languishing down in 14th and 15th place in the table, another bad result in north London this afternoon would add to the pressure on them.

Spurs need to respond after being knocked out of both domestic cup competitions last week. Defeats to Liverpool and Aston Villa mean the Europa League is their last shot at making a success of this season, though Postecoglou has stressed he wants his side to climb the table as they prepare to face a United side who have been hit by an injury crisis.

Kobbie Mainoo, Manuel Ugarte, Amad Diallo and Toby Collyer have all been added to the United injury list for the Spurs game, and Amorim has named eight yongsters on the bench. Guglielmo Vicario is set to be back in goal for Tottenham against Manchester United after more than two months out with a fractured foot.

Vicario has returned to training and the Italian is expected to come straight in at the expense of Antonin Kinsky.

Destiny Udogie and James Maddison are also available again as the injury situation at Spurs eases, but they are likely to be on the bench.

Brennan Johnson, Timo Werner and Wilson Odobert are also training but may not be ready to return.

Postecoglou has decisions to make at centre-back and in midfield, with Rodrigo Bentancur, Yves Bissouma, Pape Matar Sarr, Lucas Bergvall and Archie Gray all competing for three positions in the middle of the park for Tottenham.

Gray could also play at the back, although January signing Kevin Danso and Ben Davies seem more likely to get the nod there.

Dejan Kulusevski could also start at No8 or on the right wing, with Postecoglou also needing to decide which of Heung-min Son and Mathys Tel lead the line.

Micky van de Ven (hamstring), Cristian Romero (thigh), Dominic Solanke (knee), Richarlison (calf) and Radu Dragusin (knee) are all still sidelined.

Predicted Tottenham XI (4-3-3): Vicario; Porro, Danso, Davies, Spence; Bentancur, Sarr, Bergvall; Kulusevski, Son, Tel

Doubts: Johnson, Werner, Odobert

Injured: Van de Ven, Romero, Dragusin, Richarlison, Solanke

Amad is set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines and could potentially miss the rest of the season.

"It was a good week until two days ago when we had some problems,” said United boss Ruben Amorim on Friday.

Amid mouting injury problems at United, Chido Obi-Martin is in contention for a place in the squad after several youngsters were called into first-team training this week.

The 17-year-old has been a revelation in the United academy since joining from Arsenal in October and scored a hat-trick in the FA Youth Cup win over Chelsea in midweek.

“I don’t want to say names,” said Amorim. “We have to be careful on that. We have problems this week, we called some young players to be in our training. We have some data evaluation. He is one of them.”

Tottenham entertain Manchester United in a heavyweight Premier League fixture on Sunday, with both sides under pressure. Spurs endured a particularly bruising week, exiting both domestic cup competitions to leave only the Europa League on which to focus as an avenue for success this season. Ange Postecoglou may be without a whole host of key first-team players but there is little doubt the pressure is building.

The same could be said for United boss Ruben Amorim, too. The Red Devils have hardly improved since the former Sporting boss replaced Erik ten Hag, albeit they have tended to raise their game against so-called bigger opposition.

Still, it is a meeting of two of England’s biggest clubs in a state of crisis. Neither fully convince, which could well lead to an entertaining clash in north London. Ruben Amorim hit with fresh injury crisis before trip to north London

Big problems: Ruben Amorim is short of options in attack and in midfield

Jonathan Gorrie2 minutes ago

Manchester United will be without Amad Diallo for Sunday’s Premier League trip to Tottenham.

United beat Leicester 2-1 in the FA Cup last time out and have since been afforded an extended break, although that has not helped Ruben Amorim bolster his options.

Amad has suffered an ankle injury in training and reports suggest he could miss the rest of the season, in what is a major blow for Amorim.

The winger posted on Instagram: “Extremely disappointed to be writing this message in such a crucial time of the season.

“Unfortunately, I will be out for some time with an injury.”

Kobbie Mainoo, Manuel Ugarte and Toby Collyer are all believed to have picked up issues this week as well, leaving Amorim short of options in midfield.

Lisandro Martinez faces an extended period out of action due to a serious knee injury, while Luke Shaw recently suffered a new setback in training.

Neither of Mason Mount nor Jonny Evans will return.

Alejandro Garnacho could come back into the starting lineup, having started on the bench against Leicester. January signing Patrick Dorgu may be handed a first League start.

The United squad have been hit by a sickness bug ahead of the Spurs game, though it remains to be seen how serious an issue that is.
