Continuing the Gameweek 27 Scout Notes is a Fantasy Premier League (FPL) round-up of Tottenham Hotspur v Manchester City and Brentford v Everton.

The numbers and graphics you see in this article come from our Premium Members Area. Here, you can access Opta player and team data from every single Premier League fixture.

A WELL-TIMED HAALAND REMINDER

After missing Manchester City’s last two versus Real Madrid and Liverpool with a knee injury, Erling Haaland (£14.7m) returned to score the winner and remind FPL managers that it could soon be time to reunite.

In the 12th minute, he stayed onside to convert Jeremy Doku’s (£6.2m) squared pass, though no assist was awarded. It was a dominant start for the champions, to the point where it felt like these missed attempts would surely come back to haunt them. All three of Haaland’s were labelled as a big chance, tallying 1.35 expected goals (xG).

So with fellow premium asset Cole Palmer (£11.1m) in terrible form, could the masses start buying Haaland again?

Beginning this week in just 1% of the best 100k squads and 2% of the top million, he’ll be at home to Brighton and Hove Albion in Blank Gameweek 29 and Pep Guardiola’s side have a decent chance of Double Gameweek 33, as both they and opponents Aston Villa are still in the FA Cup. A home clash with Leicester City sits in-between.

Team-mates Phil Foden (£9.2m) and Kevin De Bruyne (£9.3m) were only named as substitutes, while forward Omar Marmoush (£7.2m) blanked.

SPURS ROTATIONS

In fact, Haaland could’ve bagged another one deep into second-half stoppage time but it was deemed to be a handball. The VAR check lasted ages and, within seconds of the restart, Pape Matar Sarr (£4.8m) missed a huge opportunity to dramatically equalise.

But ultimately Man City weren’t punished for earlier misses by their ‘bogey side’. Regardless of whether they preferred being called Tottenham, Tottenham Hotspur, Spurs or North London FC, this home team had won seven of the previous 13 meet-ups in all competitions.

For FPL managers, they’re just an unpredictable team that names unpredictable line-ups. James Maddison (£7.4m) and Brennan Johnson (£6.2m) are in and out of Ange Postecoglou’s plans. Pedro Porro (£5.3m) was a Saturday substitute, too. This time it was Son Heung-min (£9.7m), Dejan Kulusevski (£6.3m) and Djed Spence (£4.4m) being moved to the bench.

“It’s something [the opportunity to rest players] we’ve missed, obviously. I think they will benefit. Those three have played a lot of football in recent times. It allows guys like Destiny [Udogie], Brennan [Johnson] and now Wilson [Odobert] to get up the match minutes after missing a fair bit of football, but without losing sight of the fact that we have a big challenge [ahead of us] tonight and we want a strong team out there.” – Ange Postecoglou, speaking pre-match about his surprise benchings

All three came on in the 67th minute, with Mathys Tel (£6.0m) making way. The January arrival was only involved in one shot but Wilson Odobert (£5.3m) poked an exciting effort wide in his first start since Gameweek 3.

Man City stopper Ederson (£5.3m) had to make six saves, walking away with three bonus points.

WISSA + MBEUMO COMBINE AGAIN

At the Gtech Community Stadium, Brentford and Everton shared points. Once again, the combination of Bryan Mbeumo (£8.0m) and Yoane Wissa (£6.4m) came to fruition when a long throw led to the midfielder’s header hitting the bar, coming back down for his friend to tap in.

This first-half stoppage time strike denied both Jordan Pickford (£5.1m) and Vitalii Mykolenko (£4.4m) a clean sheet, taking him to a joint league high of 10 home goals.

Wednesday’s three shots on target make it 13 over the last eight outings, part of 30 attempts during this period. In fact, his season-long total of 25 big chances ranks joint-sixth, where all above have played more minutes.

One of the standout FPL forwards right now, Wissa has been involved in several disallowed goals in recent matches and had another one here in the second half. This comes days after controversially not getting the assist for Fabio Carvalho‘s (£4.5m) goal at Leicester City.

MULTIPLE BETO MISSES BUT A MYKOLENKO ASSIST

Back to left-back Mykolenko, who later provided a deep cross for fellow defender Jake O’Brien (£4.5m) to head home. It blocked Brentford goalkeeper Mark Flekken (£4.4m) from a third consecutive clean sheet.

Meanwhile, in-form striker Beto (£5.0m) did everything but score. An acrobatic volley went over the crossbar and numerous one-on-one chances were fluffed, including an incident in the final minutes.

The Guinea-Bissau international racked up five goals in his previous four but this wasn’t to be his night. A pair of big chances, a couple on target and an xG of 0.62.

FPL new signings: £6.0m midfielder Tel could offer value at Spurs

Description

One of January’s most prominent transfer sagas concluded on deadline day, as Bayern Munich attacker Mathys Tel (£6.0m) eventually agreed to become a Tottenham Hotspur player.

After initially rejecting the north London side, Tel was linked with Premier League rivals Manchester United, Arsenal, Aston Villa and Chelsea.

However, a late chat with Ange Postecoglou convinced him to join on a six-month loan with an option to buy permanently for €60m. Perhaps Harry Kane and Eric Dier snuck in a quick word too.

So will the 19-year-old immediately start and what impact will he have in Fantasy Premier League (FPL)?

We’ll take a look during this Scout Report piece, including data and images from our Premium Members Area.

HISTORY

Having joined Rennes’ youth team in 2020, Tel soon fast-tracked his way into becoming their youngest-ever first-teamer, aged 16 years and 110 days. From a club known for recently producing Eduardo Camavinga, Ousmane Dembele and Desire Doue, this quickly made some noise.

He even featured for a couple of minutes against Spurs in the 2021/22 Europa Conference League. And by that summer, Tel had captained France Under-17s to victory in the UEFA European Championship.

Bayern Munich, seeing a bright future right in front of them, decided to spend €28.5m on him.

Tel soon became their youngest scorer by netting in a DFB-Pokal win over Viktoria Koln, following it up with a left-footed strike 10 days later against Stuttgart in the Bundesliga.

Arguably his breakthrough campaign was 2023/24 under Thomas Tuchel, which began with three goals in the first five league matches, all from the bench. In between was a stoppage-time Champions League winner against Man United – also a cameo.

These are fine examples of Tel’s constant problem at Bayern – game time. Three of last season’s six league starts came right at the end, once all title hopes were extinguished. Whereas he’s featured even less since Vincent Kompany took charge, being limited to two Bundesliga lineups and just 458 minutes in all competitions. No wonder he’s goalless.

While Tel has, until recently, been determined to stay and develop in Munich, the summer addition of Michael Olise to an already-stacked collection of Kane, Jamal Musiala, Kingsley Coman, Leroy Sane, Serge Gnabry and Thomas Muller forced a change of heart.

He leaves with 16 goals and seven assists from 83 appearances, where just 16 were starts.

PLAYING STYLE

“I’m somewhere between a number nine and a left winger. I can also play on the right, but I’m more comfortable as a striker and on the left.” – Mathys Tel, interviewed in 2023

Versatility is ideal for managers but maybe the uncertainty over whether Tel should play centrally or on the inside-left is also holding back his progress.

The presence of Kane means he’s featured more on the left. But German reporter Florian Plettenberg is one of several names insisting Tel is a centre-forward.

“This is a very good solution for Tel, Tottenham and Bayern. He has reconsidered his decision. He was in talks with Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham. I’m convinced that in the end Spurs have presented the best project in order to get match practice. This is the most important for Tel.

“Now it’s up to Postecoglou to place him in the right position. He’s not a winger, he’s a striker. Let him strike, let him score goals!” – Florian Plettenberg speaking to Sky Sports News

That’s why it’s interesting that the Bundesliga website compares his style to Kylian Mbappe – someone who arrived in Madrid as a left-sided forward but has adapted well to being a striker.

An energetic 6ft 0in attacker, Tel is known for his explosive pace, one-on-one dribbling and good finishing skills. He’s decent in the air too.

But as you’d expect, some weaknesses need fixing with regular minutes. The Frenchman’s hold-up play must improve, as should his decision-making. For instance, Tel can be a bit predictable when dribbling from a standstill position because he almost always cuts inside and shoots, whether it’s the right decision or not. During the 2023/24 Bundesliga, his attempts had a low average expected goals (xG) tally of 0.09.

“You can see that he wants to score goals – that’s a great quality. Thinking back to when Arjen Robben was playing, we used to think he should have been looking for the pass, but he was so focused on scoring and he scored a lot. Mathys should keep doing his thing: firing shots in on goal. He’s a superb finisher.” – Bayern Munich’s Thomas Müller

If he learns to mix up his repertoire, he’ll be a very good player with the potential to become world-class.

“He’s a very young, talented player who can play different positions. He’s very quick, strong with his body. He’s good at defending the ball with his back towards the opponent’s goal… I have the vision that he could score 40 goals [in a season] one day in the future.” – former Bayern Munich head coach Julian Nagelsmann

WHERE TEL FITS IN AT TOTTENHAM

Who knows, maybe the real reason Postecoglou wanted him so much was the discovery that, years ago, Tel actually started off as a centre-back. He can help ease that position’s injury crisis!

Once it became clear that other moves wouldn’t materialise, Tel was ultimately persuaded by the promise of regular starts. Further up the pitch, of course. That was his priority when making a decision.

Dominic Solanke (£7.4m) is still out with a knee injury, joining Timo Werner (£6.2m), Wilson Odobert (£5.3m) and Brennan Johnson (£6.2m) on the sidelines. So we may see Tel thrown straight into action, instead of the usual expected transition.

What’s less clear is where, as both Son Heung-min (£9.8m) and Richarlison (£6.8m) can also play in different positions. The former more often from the left, the latter favoured up front.

Despite the pleas of Plettenberg, he may be more suited to being out wide in a Postecoglou side. After all, he was at his best for Bayern when attacking full-back Alphonso Davies was overlapping.

Between Djed Spence (£4.4m) and the almost-recovered Destiny Udogie (£4.8m), Tel should establish a similar relationship.

IS TEL WORTH BUYING IN FPL?

Monday afternoon brought the news that FPL authorities have made Tel a £6.0m midfielder. Initial thoughts are that he seems cheap and may even be an out-of-position asset, one that becomes tough to resist. On top of that, we’ll soon know whether or not Tottenham will have a Double Gameweek 25.

Last Friday, it was announced that their Gameweek 29 trip to Fulham will move forward should Spurs overcome Liverpool in Thursday’s EFL Cup semi-final second leg.

Here are the two scenarios:

Additionally, their other visit to Anfield – currently scheduled for late April – has a decent chance of rearrangement. Blank Gameweek 34 will depend on whether either side becomes an FA Cup semi-finalist.

Many FPL managers have been avoiding Spurs because of their horrific form. But Sunday’s much-needed win at Brentford ended a humiliating run of five points from 11 matches.

As we head into chip season, upcoming fixtures suddenly don’t look too bad for the Lilywhites. Meetings with Ipswich Town, Southampton and Wolverhampton Wanderers in the next eight Gameweeks, while the defences of the two Manchester clubs and Chelsea are far from formidable.

Should Tel impress in this week’s cup games, there could quickly be interest in taking a punt on this differential – especially if the Lilywhites get a double in Gameweek 25.

Two Premier League matches take place at 14:00 GMT before the Gameweek 24 showpiece of Arsenal v Manchester City brings Sunday’s schedule to a close.

Thomas Frank has made two changes from the team that beat Crystal Palace last week, with Hakon Valdimarsson and Kristoffer Ajer starting over Mark Flekken, who misses out altogether, and Mads Roerslev, who has joined Wolfsburg on loan.

New signing Michael Kayode is named among the substitutes.

Ange Postecoglou makes three alterations, meanwhile.

Djed Spence, Yves Bissouma and Mikey Moore start, with Radu Dragusin injured and Lucas Bergvall and Pape Sarr dropping to the bench.

Micky van de Ven, who played 45 minutes in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday, is absent from the matchday squad.

“Just trying to manage his minutes. It’s a quick turnaround. We spoke with the medical team and Micky himself and we’ll give him another week training and hopefully he’ll be ready for the end of the week.” – Ange Postecoglou on Micky van de Ven

At Old Trafford, Ruben Amorim makes two changes to the side that beat Fulham last time out.

Leny Yoro comes in for Matthijs de Ligt at the back, while Kobbie Mainoo is preferred to Rasmus Hojlund further forward.

As for Crystal Palace, Daichi Kamada comes in for Eberechi Eze, who is on the bench despite Oliver Glasner suggesting he’d miss out.

A busy day of Premier League football kicks off in London, with two matches getting underway at 14:00 GMT:

It’s one change apiece at Selhurst Park, as Jefferson Lerma comes in for Daichi Kamada for Crystal Palace.

The Japan international is named among the substitutes and sits alongside Romain Esse, the new signing from Millwall.

Thomas Frank’s one alteration from the 2-0 loss against Liverpool sees Kevin Schade replace Yehor Yarmoliuk.

Yoane Wissa, a reported target for Nottingham Forest, leads the line.

At the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Ange Postecoglou brings in Rodrigo Bentancur and Richarlison for the injured Djed Spence and James Maddison.

“He is still a bit sore from the other night. It took a fair bit out of the group and he wasn’t 100 per cent, so he misses out today. Hopefully he should be alright for next week.” – Ange Postecoglou on James Maddison

Leicester, who have lost seven successive league matches, make just one change as Bobby De-Cordova Reid replaces the benched Stephy Mavididi.

Woyo Coulibaly – a recent signing from Parma – is among the substututes.

Spurs v Newcastle team news: Botman returns, illness hits hosts

Description

Gameweek 20 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) gets underway with Tottenham Hotspur v Newcastle United at 12:30 GMT.

It’s a fixture that usually promises attacking football: the last eight meetings between these two sides (at any venue) have returned 37 goals.

Spurs beat Newcastle 4-1 in north London last season but the Magpies have won four of their last five encounters with today’s hosts.

Eddie Howe’s side will fancy their chances this afternoon, too, as the Lilywhites are beset by injury and illness problems.

The pre-deadline rumours about Son Heung-min, James Maddison and Yves Bissouma were right – all of them are on the bench after reportedly suffering from illness this week.

Fraser Forster misses out altogether, although Radu Dragusin and Archie Gray are fit to start at centre-half.

Destiny Udogie is, of course, also out with a hamstring injury, while Rodrigo Bentancur is suspended. Seven others, including Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven, remain unavailable.

All in all, there are five changes from the two-all draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers as Forster, Udogie, Bissouma, Bentancur and Son make way.

Brandon Austin makes his first Premier League start between the posts, while Djed Spence, Lucas Bergvall, Pape Matar Sarr and Timo Werner also get recalls.

The Newcastle team news is an altogether quieter affair.

Eddie Howe has made only two changes to the side that beat Manchester United on Monday, one of which is enforced.

Suspension rules Fabian Schar out, so the fit-again Sven Botman gets his first action since March.

There’s a change at right-back, too, as Tino Livramento comes in for the benched Kieran Trippier.

A win for Newcastle takes them level on points with fourth-place Chelsea. Spurs, meanwhile, will climb to 10th with a victory this lunchtime.

LINE-UPS

Tottenham Hotspur XI: Austin, Porro, Dragusin, Gray, Spence, Bergvall, Sarr, Kulusevski, Johnson, Solanke, Werner.

Subs: Whiteman, Hardy, Dorrington, Reguilon, Bissouma, Olusesi, Maddison, Son, Lankshear.

Newcastle United XI: Dubravka, Livramento, Burn, Botman, Hall, Joelinton, Tonali, Guimaraes, Murphy, Isak, Gordon.

Subs: Vlachodimos, Trippier, Barnes, Osula, Almirón, Kelly, Willock, Longstaff, Miley.

More Scout Notes for you now, reflecting on Manchester City 1-1 Everton and Nottingham Forest 1-0 Tottenham Hotspur.

MORE UNAVAILABILITY FOR MAN CITY AND SPURS

Already struggling for numbers, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur lost some more bodies before or during Gameweek 18. They now have eight and nine flagged players respectively.

At the Etihad, Kyle Walker (£5.2m) and Jack Grealish (£6.4m) missed out because of illness and muscular discomfort respectively. Pep Guardiola said he “didn’t know” whether either would be fit for the weekend.

Meanwhile, Spurs are going to be further decimated in defence.

Djed Spence (£4.4m) will be suspended in Gameweek 19 as a result of his sending off for two bookable offences. Pedro Porro (£5.5m), benched here for the third time in five Gameweeks, looks assured of a start against Wolverhampton Wanderers, as a consequence.

Elsewhere, Ben Davies (£4.3m) – on the cusp of a comeback – has had a setback and will be out for more weeks to come.

Now Radu Dragusin (£4.3m) will have to be assessed after taking a knock to the ankle against Nottingham Forest.

So desperate was the situation that the Lilywhites finished the match with Archie Gray (£4.6m) and Yves Bissouma (£4.9m) at centre-half.

We’ll round up all the latest on the injury front in our Gameweek 19 team news article later today.

TWO IN-FORM DEFENCES IMPRESS AGAIN

Joint-top of the Premier League table for clean sheets with seven apiece, the defences of Nottingham Forest and – after a slow start – Everton have been two of the success stories of this season, carrying on where they left off in 2023/24.

Forest’s latest shut-out owed to the classic combination of blocks and terrific goalkeeping. A really solid backline put their bodies on the line as ever, with Matz Sels (£4.7m) making some excellent saves – thrice denying Brennan Johnson (£6.5m) – whenever his defence was breached.

Ola Aina (£5.0m) and Nikola Milenkovic (£4.6m), now first and third for FPL points among defenders, could have hauled again. Both underscored their goal threat by getting, and this time missing, big chances.

As for Everton, there was no clean sheet this time but another solid display at the rear. Over 40% of Man City’s shots were blocked at source before they’d even had a chance to trouble Jordan Pickford (£4.9m). Even Bernardo Silva‘s (£6.3m) opener was sort of blocked, the deflection taking an unfortunate bobble past Pickford.

The England goalkeeper himself is in a rich vein of form, keeping out a penalty from Erling Haaland (£14.8m).

Everton and Forest now meet at Goodison Park in Gameweek 19. Goalless draw anyone?

MORE GVARDIOL CHANCES, PEP ON DE BRUYNE

Sitting 18th and 17th in the eight-match form table, City and Spurs will feel like they could have got better results from their respective Boxing Day matches, despite the above praise for the opposition defences.

Haaland owners’ latest ‘come back, diaper’ moment arrived when the Norwegian spurned a second-half penalty.

Bernardo meanwhile prodded wide from a good position and Josko Gvardiol‘s (£6.0m) Golden Boot assault continued when he rattled the woodwork with a header. That was one of five attempts the Croatian had.

Incredibly, he’s now had more shots in the box (23) than Morgan Rogers (£5.4m), Jamie Vardy (£5.6m) and Son Heung-min (£9.8m) this season.

This was another match in which Kevin De Bruyne (£9.5m) was benched, the Belgian not coming on until late in the game. Guardiola implied that he regretted not making a change earlier but hinted at fitness issues for De Bruyne.

“Eight important players injured, Gundo was not ready today and Kevin was not ready for 90 minutes. Maybe should have come in earlier, Kevin or maybe Gundo. But the team was playing quite decent.” – Pep Guardiola

Surely, surely this upcoming run yields some returns?

MADDISON BENCHED

Spurs’ own playmaker, James Maddison (£7.7m), was benched too. This wasn’t completely unexpected, as no other Lilywhite had started more successive games (four) in all competitions.

Son Heung-min (£9.8m) now assumes that precarious position, with five consecutive starts. Could he be the next in line for a breather?

While Spurs drew a blank here, goalscoring isn’t a worry. They had bagged 16 goals in their previous five games. Gameweek 19 will be the acid test for Wolves’ improving backline.

At the other end, though, Matheus Cunha (£7.1m) will relish the prospect of coming up against two midfielders playing at centre-back.
