Spurs v Newcastle team news: Botman returns, illness hits hosts

Description

Gameweek 20 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) gets underway with Tottenham Hotspur v Newcastle United at 12:30 GMT.

It’s a fixture that usually promises attacking football: the last eight meetings between these two sides (at any venue) have returned 37 goals.

Spurs beat Newcastle 4-1 in north London last season but the Magpies have won four of their last five encounters with today’s hosts.

Eddie Howe’s side will fancy their chances this afternoon, too, as the Lilywhites are beset by injury and illness problems.

The pre-deadline rumours about Son Heung-min, James Maddison and Yves Bissouma were right – all of them are on the bench after reportedly suffering from illness this week.

Fraser Forster misses out altogether, although Radu Dragusin and Archie Gray are fit to start at centre-half.

Destiny Udogie is, of course, also out with a hamstring injury, while Rodrigo Bentancur is suspended. Seven others, including Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven, remain unavailable.

All in all, there are five changes from the two-all draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers as Forster, Udogie, Bissouma, Bentancur and Son make way.

Brandon Austin makes his first Premier League start between the posts, while Djed Spence, Lucas Bergvall, Pape Matar Sarr and Timo Werner also get recalls.

The Newcastle team news is an altogether quieter affair.

Eddie Howe has made only two changes to the side that beat Manchester United on Monday, one of which is enforced.

Suspension rules Fabian Schar out, so the fit-again Sven Botman gets his first action since March.

There’s a change at right-back, too, as Tino Livramento comes in for the benched Kieran Trippier.

A win for Newcastle takes them level on points with fourth-place Chelsea. Spurs, meanwhile, will climb to 10th with a victory this lunchtime.

LINE-UPS

Tottenham Hotspur XI: Austin, Porro, Dragusin, Gray, Spence, Bergvall, Sarr, Kulusevski, Johnson, Solanke, Werner.

Subs: Whiteman, Hardy, Dorrington, Reguilon, Bissouma, Olusesi, Maddison, Son, Lankshear.

Newcastle United XI: Dubravka, Livramento, Burn, Botman, Hall, Joelinton, Tonali, Guimaraes, Murphy, Isak, Gordon.

Subs: Vlachodimos, Trippier, Barnes, Osula, Almirón, Kelly, Willock, Longstaff, Miley.

More Scout Notes for you now, reflecting on Manchester City 1-1 Everton and Nottingham Forest 1-0 Tottenham Hotspur.

MORE UNAVAILABILITY FOR MAN CITY AND SPURS

Already struggling for numbers, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur lost some more bodies before or during Gameweek 18. They now have eight and nine flagged players respectively.

At the Etihad, Kyle Walker (£5.2m) and Jack Grealish (£6.4m) missed out because of illness and muscular discomfort respectively. Pep Guardiola said he “didn’t know” whether either would be fit for the weekend.

Meanwhile, Spurs are going to be further decimated in defence.

Djed Spence (£4.4m) will be suspended in Gameweek 19 as a result of his sending off for two bookable offences. Pedro Porro (£5.5m), benched here for the third time in five Gameweeks, looks assured of a start against Wolverhampton Wanderers, as a consequence.

Elsewhere, Ben Davies (£4.3m) – on the cusp of a comeback – has had a setback and will be out for more weeks to come.

Now Radu Dragusin (£4.3m) will have to be assessed after taking a knock to the ankle against Nottingham Forest.

So desperate was the situation that the Lilywhites finished the match with Archie Gray (£4.6m) and Yves Bissouma (£4.9m) at centre-half.

We’ll round up all the latest on the injury front in our Gameweek 19 team news article later today.

TWO IN-FORM DEFENCES IMPRESS AGAIN

Joint-top of the Premier League table for clean sheets with seven apiece, the defences of Nottingham Forest and – after a slow start – Everton have been two of the success stories of this season, carrying on where they left off in 2023/24.

Forest’s latest shut-out owed to the classic combination of blocks and terrific goalkeeping. A really solid backline put their bodies on the line as ever, with Matz Sels (£4.7m) making some excellent saves – thrice denying Brennan Johnson (£6.5m) – whenever his defence was breached.

Ola Aina (£5.0m) and Nikola Milenkovic (£4.6m), now first and third for FPL points among defenders, could have hauled again. Both underscored their goal threat by getting, and this time missing, big chances.

As for Everton, there was no clean sheet this time but another solid display at the rear. Over 40% of Man City’s shots were blocked at source before they’d even had a chance to trouble Jordan Pickford (£4.9m). Even Bernardo Silva‘s (£6.3m) opener was sort of blocked, the deflection taking an unfortunate bobble past Pickford.

The England goalkeeper himself is in a rich vein of form, keeping out a penalty from Erling Haaland (£14.8m).

Everton and Forest now meet at Goodison Park in Gameweek 19. Goalless draw anyone?

MORE GVARDIOL CHANCES, PEP ON DE BRUYNE

Sitting 18th and 17th in the eight-match form table, City and Spurs will feel like they could have got better results from their respective Boxing Day matches, despite the above praise for the opposition defences.

Haaland owners’ latest ‘come back, diaper’ moment arrived when the Norwegian spurned a second-half penalty.

Bernardo meanwhile prodded wide from a good position and Josko Gvardiol‘s (£6.0m) Golden Boot assault continued when he rattled the woodwork with a header. That was one of five attempts the Croatian had.

Incredibly, he’s now had more shots in the box (23) than Morgan Rogers (£5.4m), Jamie Vardy (£5.6m) and Son Heung-min (£9.8m) this season.

This was another match in which Kevin De Bruyne (£9.5m) was benched, the Belgian not coming on until late in the game. Guardiola implied that he regretted not making a change earlier but hinted at fitness issues for De Bruyne.

“Eight important players injured, Gundo was not ready today and Kevin was not ready for 90 minutes. Maybe should have come in earlier, Kevin or maybe Gundo. But the team was playing quite decent.” – Pep Guardiola

Surely, surely this upcoming run yields some returns?

MADDISON BENCHED

Spurs’ own playmaker, James Maddison (£7.7m), was benched too. This wasn’t completely unexpected, as no other Lilywhite had started more successive games (four) in all competitions.

Son Heung-min (£9.8m) now assumes that precarious position, with five consecutive starts. Could he be the next in line for a breather?

While Spurs drew a blank here, goalscoring isn’t a worry. They had bagged 16 goals in their previous five games. Gameweek 19 will be the acid test for Wolves’ improving backline.

At the other end, though, Matheus Cunha (£7.1m) will relish the prospect of coming up against two midfielders playing at centre-back.

FPL notes: Spurs injury updates, Enzo + Sancho shine

Description

We continue our Sunday Scout Notes with key takeaways from Tottenham Hotspur 3-4 Chelsea and Ipswich Town 1-2 Bournemouth.

ROMERO, VAN DE VEN + JOHNSON INJURY UPDATES

Cristian Romero (£5.0m) and Micky van de Ven (£4.5m), Tottenham’s first-choice centre-back pairing, both returned to action on Sunday, albeit briefly.

Ange Postecoglou had previously said Romero could feature in Gameweek 15, but van de Ven’s inclusion was a real surprise, having been expected to return later this month.

However, both players had to be withdrawn, lasting 14 and 78 minutes respectively.

For Romero, it was a quad injury rather than the toe problem he’d just recovered from.

“Romero is just obviously hugely disappointing. He felt something in his quad. He trained really well. He wasn’t the one I was worried about, to be honest, but it’s just the way the season’s going for us unfortunately. So, we just have to wait and see.

“And then, well, the plan was always for Micky to play 60, 70 [minutes] today. Obviously, I thought Romero would be okay to play 90, but Micky, probably 60,70. So we were always going take him off. He didn’t feel anything significant. He just felt tightness, but we were always going to take him off anyway.” – Ange Postecoglou

In a further blow, Brennan Johnson (£6.7m) had to come off shortly after the start of the second half, having supplied the assist for Dominic Solanke‘s (£7.5m) opener.

“Brennan just didn’t feel well, he didn’t feel well at half time, but he wanted to give it a go, he just wasn’t feeling 100 per cent, so we had to take him off.” – Ange Postecoglou on Brennan Johnson

Johnson ‘should’ be okay for Sunday’s trip to Southampton, then, but one player who will definitely miss out is Yves Bissouma (£4.9m).

The midfielder picked up a booking against Chelsea, his fifth yellow card of the campaign. He’ll now serve a one-match ban.

PALMER, SANCHO + ENZO SUPERB

Solanke, Dejan Kulusevski (£6.3m) and Son Heung-min (£9.8m) were all on the scoresheet for Tottenham, but they were brutally exposed by Chelsea, who are going from strength to strength under Enzo Maresca.

With another four goals plundered in north London, the Blues have now scored 35 times in 15 league games this season, the most of any Premier League club.

They are also top for expected goals (xG), with 32.59.

Chelsea showed their quality in the second half, which coincided with Moises Caicedo (£4.9m) moving from right-back into central midfield and Benoit Badiashile (£4.3m) and Levi Colwill (£4.5m) switching sides at the heart of the defence.

It allowed Marc Cucurella (£5.1m) to invert from left-back into an attacking central midfield role, a tactic which caused chaos among Spurs’ backline.

“In the first half, we had Cole Palmer on one side and Enzo Fernandez on the other side. In the second half, we had Cole Palmer on one side and Cucurella on the other side. We changed something in behind [the attacking line]. It was just for this reason. I think it worked well in the end and we won the game.” – Enzo Maresca

Above: Chelsea’s passing network in the first (left) and second half (right) in Gameweek 15, including subs

Cole Palmer (£11.1m) struck two second-half penalties and supplied an assist to total 18 points, but Enzo Fernandez (£4.9m) and Jadon Sancho (£6.2m) were equally influential, scoring one apiece.

Enzo caused all sorts of problems in the pockets and has now racked up six attacking returns in his last five matches, while Sancho has definitely got his mojo back, having found the net in back-to-back Gameweeks.

“Since we started, I said the reason why Jadon came here is because we think Jadon is going to help us. Unfortunately, he had small problems, so he was out for a while. Now he is back and the only thing he has to do is continue in the same way. He cannot drop, otherwise he is not going to play. His performance and Pedro Neto’s, on and off the ball was very good. Off the ball, they were running, following Udogie and defensively they were very good. This is what we need.” – Enzo Maresca on Jadon Sancho and Pedro Neto

Pedro Neto (£6.2m) will be sidelined in Gameweek 16, however, having received his fifth yellow card of the season.

That could potentially open the door for a Noni Madueke (£6.3m) punt against leaky Brentford, although given Sancho and Neto’s recent form, it may be a short-term move.

BURGESS IMPRESSES IN GREAVES’ ABSENCE

Cameron Burgess (£4.0m) returned at centre-half for Ipswich Town on Sunday, forcing positional rival Jacob Greaves (£4.0m) out of the squad altogether.

That’s because Kieran McKenna doesn’t tend to have centre-backs on the bench if he can help it, instead preferring to include multiple attacking options.

Greaves’ future starting prospects weren’t helped by a superb Burgess display.

The 29-year-old was one of the best players on the pitch against Bournemouth, even providing the assist for Conor Chaplin’s (£5.1m) first-ever Premier League goal.

“Fantastic. I thought he was excellent in defence, how he defended the box, how he led but also some of his composure on the ball was really good as well, which is a good step for him. Like some of the other players who I mentioned and so many players in the group, he’s improving and he’s stepping up to the level and I’m really pleased with him today.” – Kieran McKenna on Cameron Burgess

Elsewhere, Liam Delap (£5.6m) blanked and is now just one yellow card away from suspension.

As for Bournemouth, it was the subs who made the difference, with Enes Unal (£5.4m) and Dango Ouattara (£5.0m) on the scoresheet late on.

Prior to that, the Cherries got plenty of joy down the left, with Milos Kerkez (£4.6m) and Antoine Semenyo (£5.7m) combining well.

Kerkez fizzed a lovely early ball across the six-yard box, which Marcus Tavernier £5.5m) somehow turned wide from a few yards out. The xG on that chance was given as 0.94!

Tavernier later hit the post, with Justin Kluivert (£5.5m) and Semenyo racking up four shots apiece.

“The subs gave us the end product that we were missing. We were arriving in the right places but not finishing. They finished well, we were almost in desperation mode at that point. We didn’t have much structure and it was just about trying to get something.” – Andoni Iraola

Spurs lost 1-0 at Bournemouth on Thursday, continuing their poor form under Ange Postecoglou, while Chelsea can move within four points of Liverpool with a win after the Merseyside derby was postponed.

In a huge boost, Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven are both fit to start for the hosts.

Son Heung-min replaces the latter, having been rested in midweek.

As for Chelsea, Enzo Maresca makes seven changes to the side which won 5-1 at Southampton.

Robert Sanchez, Benoit Badiashile, Levi Colwill, Romeo Lavia, Pedro Neto, Jadon Sancho and Nicolas Jackson return to the starting XI.
