Description

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta and Tottenham Hotspur right-back Pedro Porro threatened to come to blows in a fiery first north London derby overseas.

It was Spurs who run out 1-0 winners at Kai Tak Sports Park in Hong Kong on Thursday thanks to Pape Matar Sarr's first-half stunner.

But his 45th minute goal wasn't without controversy with his 45-yard lob over David Raya leaving the Arsenal squad and Arteta furious.

Raya, who was 30 yards out from his goal, played in Myles Lewis-Skelly by the halfway line, with the left-back instantly surrounded by five Spurs shirts.

Lewis-Skelly went down under a challenge from Richarlison, with Sarr picking up the loose ball and finding the back of the net from range for his third goal of pre-season already.

Despite protests from Arsenal, the referee awarded the goal - much to the frustration of Arteta.

And it seemed that the ex-Gunners captain was riled up during the second half as he nitpicked over a throw-in to be taken by Porro.

What did Pedro Porro do to Mikel Arteta in the north London derby?

Arteta left his technical area and approached the byline where he looked to get the referee's attention to point out that Porro was walking further up the pitch for the throw-in - insisting he should move back.

It saw Arteta throw his arms in the air after being sent backwards, as he sent a furious look towards Porro and exchanged heated words with the defender.

But before he could get face-to-face with the former Sporting Lisbon man, the fourth official got in between the pair in his attempt to de-escalate the situation.

Social media was sent into meltdown over the incident, as one X user said: "Arteta always trying to be the main man… get back in your box."

Another remarked: "Why does he have to push Arteta that way? That is very disrespectful."

A third added: "Wouldn’t matter if the Spurs player took the throw where he was supposed to."

This fan then commented: "The rivalry continues regardless of pre-season."

And one supporter messaged: "Getting physical in a pre-season is nuts."

Meanwhile another simply stated: "Main character syndrome."

Arsenal's defeat to Spurs was their first loss of their pre-season tour of Asia having beaten both AC Milan and Newcastle recently.

The Gunners saw both striker Viktor Gyokeres and defender Christhian Mosquera make their debuts as late second half substitutes.

But neither man did anything of note as Arsenal struggled to create clear-cut chances as they desperately pushed for a late equaliser.

Next up for the Gunners is a clash against Villarreal next Wednesday at the Emirates Stadium.

As for Spurs, they will pit their wits against Newcastle in South Korea on Sunday.

Why Tottenham struggle to sell in new transfer market as Chelsea near £1bn in player sales

Why Tottenham struggle to sell in new transfer market as Chelsea near £1bn in player sales - talkSPORT
Description

Tottenham have failed to sell a single first-team player, with Thomas Frank not afforded much wiggle room to overhaul his new squad.

Spurs' perceived lack of spending has served as a backdrop to many of their recent transfer windows, with Daniel Levy telling fans in March that the club must spend within its means.

For the year ending in June 2024, the Lilywhites had post-tax losses of £26.2million.

This represented a drop from their £86.8m loss the previous year, despite a £21.4m decrease in revenue.

Fans would have hoped a first European trophy in 41 years would alter transfer plans this summer, especially under a new manager.

And in terms of incomings, that initially looked to be the case, after Mohammed Kudus completed a £55m move from West Ham.

Tottenham had already completed the signing of Japan international defender Kota Takai from Kawasaki Frontale.

Meanwhile, they have also turned loan stars Mathys Tel and Kevin Danso into permanent additions to the squad.

However, the Morgan Gibbs-White saga has slowed their momentum in terms of incomings, which has highlighted their real issue: selling.

As Levy pointed out, Tottenham have invested over £700m net in player acquisitions since opening the club's new stadium in April 2019.

How much have Spurs made in player sales?

According to Transfermarkt, the north Londoners have only recouped £293.6m from outgoings.

A huge chunk of that outlay is being propped up by the £86.5m Bayern Munich paid up front for Harry Kane in 2023, with another £8.5m due in potential add-ons for the England captain.

Tottenham's record goalscorer is one of just 13 players to command a fee of £10m or more since the 2-0 defeat to Liverpool six years ago.

Heung-Min Son remains the only starter from Mauricio Pochettino's line-up in the Champions League final still on the books at the club.

The exits of the 10 other players banked Spurs a combined £152.9m - a figure already surpassed by Chelsea during this summer alone.

Excluding Kane, that number drops to £66.4m - money covered by their Blues rivals, with the sales of Joao Felix and Djordje Petrovic.

Why do Spurs struggle to sell players?

And that's been a continued theme since 2019, where Chelsea more than treble what their north London neighbours have in outgoings.

The Blues have made almost £1bn on player sales in that time, with Spurs behind Southampton, Leicester, Leeds, and Bournemouth.

As per the Telegraph, Tottenham's inability to sell well is put down to two main factors.

That is unrealistic valuations on their players, and a failure to effectively identify to cash in - highlighted by the fact that four of their 2019 Champions League starters left on free transfers.

This has been a huge problem this summer, with football finance expert Stefan Borson revealing that they need to sell some of their stars or benefit from a cash injection to strengthen their squad.

“Daniel Levy is not in a position to put any more money in,” he told White & Jordan in April. “He’s a very wealthy guy because of his holding of shares, but unless he sells those shares, he doesn’t have the cash to put into the club.

“That leaves the Lewis Trust - not Joe Lewis himself – the Lewis Trust being effectively the only funder around for Spurs from a cash perspective because they can’t raise any more debt.

“On top of that, they potentially have some covenant issues, and so the problem they’re going to have is nothing to do with Financial Fair Play, it’s to do with actual cash. How do they actually pay for things?

“Unless they either raise money from one of their shareholders or sell some footballers, they won’t have the cash to pay for new footballers.”

Tottenham have belatedly tried to rectify the situation by triggering an option to extend Son's contract to protect the latter's value.

Al Ahli, Al Nassr and Al Qadsiah are three clubs to have expressed interest this summer, and the trio are prepared to shell out £34m for the South Korean - a far cry from the £51m bids that were tabled for him in 2023.

Yves Bissouma and Richarlison are both on the club’s pre-season tour in Asia despite Tottenham being open to offers for each this summer.

He said: “We know how good he is, it’s scary to play against him..

“Of course, I’m so happy to have him in my club, and I’m sure that he will help us to win games and win trophies.

“Why scary? Because when you face a striker who scores goals, you have to be focused! But now he’s in our team and he will score for us, so that’s good.”

And on pre-season so far, he said: “There are a lot of positive things. We played two games; we won two games. There are also a lot of things to improve, but of course we have to keep going like that.

“We have three games left before the Premier League, so we have to keep going and keep winning games.”

Arsenal star loved Tottenham fans’ heartwarming gesture during rare pre-season friendly - talkSPORT
Description

The word 'friendly' doesn't usually relate to when Arsenal face bitter rivals Tottenham.

However, that was certainly the atmosphere inside the stadium during a rare pre-season north London derby between the two in 2021.

Arsenal and Tottenham met in the capital as part of their preparations for the campaign four years ago.

And they will now be meeting again on Thursday in Hong Kong as part of the clubs' pre-season tours of Asia.

When that game begins, Bukayo Saka could see some warm memories return after a heartfelt gesture from Spurs supporters.

The rivalry between the Premier League sides has been fierce for over a century, since their first clash in 1896.

We have witnessed many iconic fixtures and they have all usually included a bit of extra needle on derby day.

But in 2021, that was all put aside to pay tribute to Saka following a heartbreaking Euro 2020 final just a few weeks prior.

It was the England international's first appearance since he missed the decisive penalty for the Three Lions against Italy in the final of Euro 2020.

After the defeat, Saka, along with Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho, received abhorrent racist abuse online.

The incident led to the footballing world coming together in support and that meant even their biggest rivals stood with them.

As Saka came on against Spurs in the friendly, the home support applauded him at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Just 19 years old at the time, the Arsenal winger clapped back towards the fans too, thanking them for the heartwarming reception.

He would later post a video of the moment on social media, writing the caption: "So much respect for this. Thank you!"

A message created by Spurs fans in support of Saka was displayed throughout the pre-season game as well.

It read: "North London stands with Bukayo Saka and all players against racism and discrimination. COYS"

That north London derby, which was eventually won by Tottenham thanks to a Heung-min Son goal, was a special one.

And the bitter rivals will now be back in rare friendly action against eachother again on Thursday.

PSG are yet to return to pre-season training, having only finished their 2024/25 campaign a couple of weeks ago.

The French giants are also yet to make a first-team signing, while Marco Asensio, Randal Kolo Munai and others will be back from their respective loan spells.

Gianluigi Donnarumma has not signed a new deal with PSG, and he could depart before the Super Cup.

Meanwhile, Spurs have made one first-team addition in Mohammed Kudus.

They could be struggling for injuries as well, with a few players not travelling to Asia for the pre-season tour.

This includes Dejan Kulusevski and Destiny Udogie, while Radu Dragusin is recovering from an ACL injury.

UEFA Super Cup: What has been said?

Frank wants Tottenham to be a brave and aggressive team under his guidance.

When introduced as Spurs manager, he said: "I'm very clear on the principles on every phase of the game. I want us to be brave and very aggressive. I also want to attack.

"Brave is absolutely linked [with] 'To dare is to do'. If you are not brave, it is difficult to achieve anything. Brave is crucial. The aggressiveness is crucial if you want to win or achieve something. And you need to attack.

"Coming to a big club, there is pressure. We need to perform, it's me, the staff and the players. We have to do it together.

"I like the ambitions and everything I do, every decision I make so far, is not about surviving one game or one year. It is for the long-run.

"I will do everything, every day, to work towards taking this club to new heights. That is the ambition.

"If I was not ambitious, I would not sit here. I am looking forward to it."

Tottenham Hotspur suffer blow as new signing is immediately ruled out for weeks - talkSPORT
Description

Tottenham Hotspur defender Kota Takai has suffered a foot injury, Thomas Frank has confirmed.

The Japanese international has been ruled out for a number of weeks.

Takai is yet to make his Spurs debut after signing for the club earlier this month.

He joined from Kawasaki Frontale on a five-year deal for a fee worth £5million.

However, the 20-year-old will not be involved against Arsenal in Hong Kong on Thursday.

It comes after he missed Spurs' previous pre-season friendlies against Reading, Wycombe and Luton.

Frank confirmed the severity of Takai's injury during his pre-match press conference on Tuesday.

He told reporters: "Kota got a plantar fascia injury, unfortunately we don’t know the scale of it – weeks."

The Spurs boss also revealed Destiny Udogie will not feature on the Asian tour after picking up an injury ahead of the Luton clash.

Frank added: "Destiny got a knee injury that we’re assessing at the moment, that has kept him out of this pre-season tour."

Meanwhile, Rodrigo Bentancur is available following an illness to face the Gunners.

The two sides are set to meet at the Kai Tak Stadium in the first North London Derby played overseas.

However, Dominic Solanke and James Maddison are not expected to be fit to feature as they continue their rehabilitation programmes.

Frank explained: "Dom is looking much better, progressing, we’ll see if it’s too early for Arsenal, but we’re positive about him.

"Madders is looking better and better, could also be too early for Arsenal, again, we’ll see. Rodri is back from illness, so that’s good."

Who have Spurs signed this summer?

Takai is one of five permanent signings Spurs have made this summer.

It follows Frank's appointment on a three-year deal as Ange Postecoglou's successor.

Mathys Tel and Kevin Danso have both made their loan moves permanent.

Meanwhile, Spurs splashed out £55million to bring Mohammed Kudus to the club from West Ham.

Teenage defender Luka Vuskovic has also arrived from Hajduk Split after turning 18 having agreed a deal for the Croatian back in 2023.

Spurs' pre-season schedule

Following the clash with Arsenal, Spurs conclude their Asian tour against Newcastle in Seoul on Sunday.

They will then travel to Germany to face Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena on August 7.

Whilst that is their final pre-season friendly, Frank will oversee one more fixture before the start of the new domestic season.

Spurs meet Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Super Cup on August 13.

The match will be held at the 25,144-capacity Stadio Friuli in Udine, Italy.

They then kick-off their Premier League campaign at home to newly-promoted Burnley three days later.

Fantasy Premier League tips - bargains signings included Chelsea, Tottenham and Man City stars

Fantasy Premier League tips - bargains signings included Chelsea, Tottenham and Man City stars - talkSPORT
Description

Fantasy Premier League is back ahead of the 2025/26 season and the hunt for bargain signings is on.

If you're going to drop a hefty sum on Erling Haaland (£14m) or Mohamed Salah (£14.5m) then some penny pinching in other areas will be vital.

This year there have been some big changes too, and it might just make you think again about who you sign.

First of all, a raft of stars - including Arsenal's Myles Lewis-Skelly - have had their positions changed.

There is also a huge change to transfers and while you might think it only applies to December, it's wise to factor it into your plans.

This year the Africa Cup of Nations will take place from Sunday, December 21, 2025 to Sunday, January 18, 2026.

To account for that you'll be able to get five free transfers - if you plot it right - in Gameweek 16. You just need to make sure you have zero left when Gameweek 15 ends.

This means you won't need to use your Free Hit chip, which takes us to another big change.

Managers will now get two sets of chips - one for each half of the campaign - so don't be afraid to take that risky Triple Captain, you've got another for later in the season.

And to top it off, outfield players could now get two FPL points if they make a combined total of 10 clearances, blocks, interceptions and tackles (CBIT) in a single match,

Imagine how many points N'Golo Kante would have got? Well, stars like Moises Caicedo and Carlos Baleba might just benefit.

But who are the ultimate bargains? Check out our tips below...

Goalkeeper

Caoimhin Kelleher (Brentford) - £4.5m

We expect the ex-Liverpool star to be in most teams this season, so you may as well get on this train too.

Finally getting a shot at being No.1, the Irish goalkeeper is going to have a big job on his hands as the Bees rebuild.

Djordje Petrovic (Bournemouth) - £4.5m

The Serbian has left Chelsea and found himself at the Cherries to replace exiting loanee Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Bournemouth are having their defence raided ahead of the new season but Petrovic in his time at Chelsea and Strasbourg has shown potential to hold his own.

Defenders

Aaron Wan-Bissaka (West Ham) - £4.5m

The ex-Manchester United right-back was a major bright spot in a tough season for the Hammers.

Two goals and six assists proved he isn't just a defensive full-back - but that will help given the new CBIT points.

Ezri Konsa (Aston Villa) - £4.5m

A consistent FPL points scorer, he's an almost guaranteed 100 points with the new defensive points system.

Meanwhile, the Villans do have a decent start to the season if you need cover for a more expensive player.

Ola Aina (Nottingham Forest) - £4.5m

The Nigerian had a breakout season at right-back for the Tricky Trees and grabbed a fine haul of 128 points last-term.

Not the greatest for goals and assists but has a defensive upside in the new system; also, he offers a good rotation option with Konsa.

Marc Guehi (Crystal Palace) - £4.5m

With a transfer away from Selhurst Park still a possibility, it might be wise to get in on the centre-back now.

He managed 116 points last-term, despite the Eagles' shocking start to the season so if they pick up where they left off he will already be on the road to a decent total.

Destiny Udogie (Tottenham) - £4.5m

Micky Van de Ven has been the popular pick in a Spurs defence likely to be more solid than last season, but the Italian full-back may be a better option.

He could be used as a marauding, overlapping full-back once more rather than an underlapping one, so expect more crosses into a dangerous area and more assists than his paltry one last year.

Midfielders

Mohammed Kudus (Tottenham) - £6.5m

We're back in north London, this time for one of their new signings.

His form dropped off as the Hammers struggled last season with his goal contributions dropping from 17 to just nine - but he could get a new lease of life at Tottenham.

Anthony Elanga (Newcastle) - £7m

What happens if you add a rapid counter-attacking winger into a team that, well, does that a lot?

Hopefully, for our sake, it equates to a similar or increased output from his 17 goal contributions last term.

Rayan Cherki (Man City) - £6.5m

The French attacking midfielder is an amazing player to watch and if he can get similar stats to last season, his addition to your team is a no-brainer.

At the Club World Cup he looked like he was already forming a great link with Erling Haaland - and that could profit FPL managers.

Moises Caicedo (Chelsea) - £5.5m

Unsurprisingly, the Ecuadorian would have got the most CBIT points last season had they been available.

He would have added 42 to his tally, finishing with 140, placing him amongst the top 20. So, think again this year.

Forwards

Dominic Solanke (Tottenham) - £7.5m

One man who could benefit from Thomas Frank's arrival at Tottenham is Solanke.

Used heavily to press and build up Spurs' attacks, he scored 10 fewer goals last season; this year he might be the focus of the attack instead.

Liam Delap (Chelsea) - £6.5m

Scoring 12 Premier League goals for a relegated team is seriously impressive.

With better service, even if he's not the starting striker for Chelsea, he will likely offer a similar output, if not better, than last season which saw him land 132 points.

Joel Piroe (Leeds) - £5.5m

Signing a striker for a promoted side is a risk, but Delap is proof it can work.

Piroe hit 19 last time and also managed seven assists so if anyone can do it, he certainly has a chance.

Jorgen Strand Larsen (Wolves) - £6.5m

Probably one of the most underrated players last season in the Premier League.

With little fanfare, the Norwegian racked up 14 goals and four assists; a similar haul would be exceptional.

I played with Harry Kane and Tottenham's latest academy star 11 years younger who is a 'talent' - talkSPORT
Description

Harry Kane's early doubters were exclusively from the Tottenham hierarchy, and certainly not from the stars who trained with him.

The Bayern Munich hitman is now Spurs and England’s record goalscorer, having initially endured struggles to break through.

Kane spent much of his early years on loan at Leyton Orient, Millwall, Norwich and Leicester before finding his feet in the Spurs first-team.

Tim Sherwood has since revealed that during this period, he was instructed to get rid of the striker when he was Tottenham boss.

But he resisted the pressure after believing in his abilities - and his opinion has been shared by those working up close with him.

Dominic Ball played alongside Kane at Tottenham Under-21 level, with the 31-year-old bagging a hat-trick when the pair started a 6-3 win over Manchester City in a Barclays U21 Premier League clash in 2013.

Less than 12 months later, Kane was given his first senior top-flight start for Spurs and the rest, as they say, is history.

And during an exclusive interview with talkSPORT.com, during amedia day organised by new Cambridge sponsors, Brooks Running, Ball admitted his potential was obvious.

"Yes, it was [obvious what level he was going to get to]," the new U's signing admitted.

"I only trained with him for like one pre-season, and it wasn't until I trained with him that I realised, 'all right, this guy's gonna be very difficult to play against.'

"If I open my legs to try and block, he'd put it through my legs. If I wasn't big enough, he'd rip it into the top corner.

"His finishing has taken him to a level, and then everything else he's built up mainly because he's just so focused, his mindset has always been 'I wanna be the best' and he is - He's been one of the best strikers in the world for a while."

Over a decade later, Ball has also seen first-hand another Tottenham starlet looking to emulate Kane's exact pathway at the club.

The 29-year-old spent last season at Leyton Orient alongside Spurs loanee Jamie Donley before rejoining Cambridge this summer.

Donley initially struggled to get to grips with his first taste of senior football, playing just one minute of league football last November.

However, the 20-year-old rapidly turned around his fortunes at Brisbane Road to be named the O's Player of the Year.

The Northern Ireland international scored eight goals and registered 10 assists as Orient narrowly lost in the League One play-off final to Charlton.

Donley is now hoping like Kane that his temporary stint at Orient could prove to be a springboard to success at Spurs.

Ball added to talkSPORT: "That was his first loan, his first length of games, and there was a period at the start of the season where he wasn't playing and things weren't going well, and he had a choice to make.

"Go back to Spurs and just accept a failed loan, or sort of dig deep and make it happen.

"I remember just saying to him, like Jay, even for yourself, keep training hard for yourself, because it will change.

"There are so many things happening in football out of your control, but you train hard for yourself.

"I remember saying to him in the first game that me and him played together. I was like, we're entertainers, let's relax, let's enjoy this.

"And he always said that he kept that with him, and he ended up being our most influential player.

"I don't know what his level's gonna be - whether that's Prem, Champ, or even higher.

"But I'm looking forward to seeing him sort of progress because he is a talent!"

Tottenham Hotspur dealt major blow as Morgan Gibbs-White signs new Nottingham Forest deal - talkSPORT
Description

Morgan Gibbs-White has penned a new three-year deal at Nottingham Forest to end any uncertainty over his future.

The 25-year-old looked to be heading to Tottenham Hotspur earlier this month after the north London outfit thought they had activated his £60million release clause.

Spurs had pencilled in a medical to take place, only for the deal to be put on hold.

Forest lodged a legal complaint after believing the approach from Spurs was illegal.

Thomas Frank's side had held out hope that a transfer for the England international could be rescued.

But Gibbs-White has instead pledged his long-term future to the Reds to keep him at the City Ground until 2028.

It is believed that the player's new deal does not contain a release clause.

Speaking of his delight at his new deal, the midfielder told the club's website: "I’ve felt at home at Forest from the moment I arrived.

"The support from the fans, my teammates, and everyone around the club has been unbelievable.

"I believe in what we're building here – and with the backing of Mr Marinakis and the enormous ambition he has, I want to be part of making something special.

"I’m excited for what’s to come."

Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis has been desperate in keeping Gibbs-White at the club.

And with the club to be taking part in their first European campaign in 30 years, he can count on the ex-Wolves star to play a starring role.

Failing to contain his delight at being able to keep his prized asset at Forest, Marinakis said: "Morgan is a special player.

"Not just in terms of talent, but character and mentality.

"He represents everything we want this football club to be: he is a winner, talented, ambitious, fearless, and proud.

“There was significant interest from various clubs, but we were determined to build our future with Morgan at the heart of it.

"I promised our fans we would not only compete, but grow stronger and stronger every season.

"Today is another big step in that journey."

Gibbs-White showed his love for Forest during the club's 0-0 draw with Monaco last weekend.

As he headed down the tunnel after the first half, he turned towards the club's fans where he clapped them and signalled a love heart in their direction.

He is currently with his teammates in the Algarve as part of their pre-season camp in Portugal.
