I played for Tottenham and Man United and have one of the greatest ever touches - but I perfected skill without a football

Dimitar Berbatov has one of the best touches in Premier League history, but he didn't master his skill in the conventional way.

That's because the former striker didn't have a football to practice with when he was growing up in his native Bulgaria in the 1980s, under the Bulgarian Communist Party, and early 1990s.

Fast forward to 2024, and the Premier League title winner certainly has a career to reminisce on - and his humble start makes it all the more special.

Speaking on talkSPORT's The LineUp, the 43-year-old said: "We did not [have a football] because we didn't have money for a football. Somewhere we had a basket ball, which was a heavy ball.

"There were stories of young players who wanted to master their touch, and nobody told me to do that, I just felt I needed to do it with a basketball.

"I started as a small child, throwing it in the air and controlling it with my feet. Control, control. And that's how I mastered my touch."

Berbatov used another even more unusual item to practice his touch after the basketball, too.

"After the basketball, which one day just disappeared, I used a pig's bladder. We had a tradition back home on a specific holiday, we would slaughter a pig," he explained.

"It was a big meal with relatives. But when you slaughter the pig, you take out the bladder.

"My dad was like 'come here, you want a ball? I'll give you a ball'. So you take the bladder of the pig, blow it up, it becomes like a ball.

"But it was slimy so I needed to make it more stable! So then we put clothes around it to make it more stable, and now we have close to a proper ball!"

Berbatov's practice with makeshift footballs earned him a place at his home-town club Pirin, before a move to CSKA Sofia at the age of 17-came in 1998.

He signed for Bayer Leverkusen in 2001 and was part of the squad beaten by a Real Madrid and Zinedine Zidane materclass before joining Tottenham for £10.6million in 2006, making him the most expensive Bulgarian footballer at the time.

The striker won the League Cup with Spurs in 2008, earning him a blockbuster move to Manchester United for a then-club record fee of £30.75million.

Two Premier League titles and two more League Cup wins followed, and Berbatov ended his career with Fulham, Monaco, PAOK and then Kerala Blasters.

Reflecting on his career, Berbatov says growing up in difficult circumstances made him even more determined to succeed.

"It was not easy, but everyone has a story of a difficult up bringing or whatever," he said.

"Back home we were getting out of [the communist regime] so it was not easy for us as a family.

"But when you're a small kid, your family present it to you as a game. You know, 'go wait in line at 6am because we're going to play a game'. Actually you're waiting in line for bread.

"When you are in the situation, you don't appreciate it enough because your family try to make sure you're not seeing how you're making money.

"When you look back, you start to appreciate it even more. Growing [up] at home was probably harder than growing [up] in England, or other countries.

"But that's what made us hungry. Me, specifically to achieve my dream which was to play football at the highest level possible. I wanted to go out of my country and be a foreigner, but try to be part of the locals and show I can be part of you guys.

"Just give me a chance and I can show you."

He did that and more.

Dimitar Berbatov 'cried' at Harry Kane's Tottenham departure and sums ex-Spurs star up with one word

Description

Dimitar Berbatov has revealed he was stunned 'no Premier League club wanted Harry Kane' as he hailed England's captain as a 'machine'.

It's been over a year since Kane left Tottenham for Bayern Munich for £86million with add-ons that could increase the total transfer fee to around £100m.

Since then he's reached the Euro 2024 final with England and edged Erling Haaland to become the fastest ever player to notch 50 goal contributions, doing so in just 35 matches.

But Berbatov thinks Kane deserved to stay in the Premier League, as he revealed he felt like most Tottenham fans when the Spurs striker left for the Bundesliga.

When asked what he thought of Kane on talkSPORT's The LineUp, he shook his head and said: "Harry Kane is a machine."

"I was crying that day [he left]," Berbatov said.

"Well, not crying! But I was like 'seriously?!'

"'No other club in the Premier League wanted him to stay here?"

Current Premier League champions Manchester City had been interested in Kane in 2021.

Sergio Aguero had left for Barcelona that summer, and City needed to replace him.

However, their £100m bid for Kane wasn't enough to persuade Spurs to let go of their talisman.

Two years later, he moved on for Germany and is now under contract until June 2027.

City, meanwhile, signed Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund and Spurs have Dominic Solanke starting up top now instead.

Kane made 435 appearances for Spurs, becoming their all-time top scorer with 280 goals and grabbing 61 assists.

Berbatov, meanwhile, played 102 times for Spurs, scoring 46 goals and assisting 29 between 2006 and 2008 - and both strikers have firmly written themselves in the club's history books as a result.

Berbatov won the League Cup with the club in 2008, too.

The Bulgarian scored the equaliser in the final against Chelsea to cancel out Didier Drogba's opener.

Jonathan Woodgate bagged the winner in added time to claim Tottenham's last trophy.

‘I like him a lot’ – Alan Shearer makes bold goalscoring prediction for Dominic Solanke

Alan Shearer has backed Dominic Solanke for a big season in front of goal after Tottenham's win over Aston Villa.

The £65million summer signing scored twice as Spurs came from behind to beat Villa 4-1 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday.

Ange Postecoglou's side had trailed at the break through a Morgan Rogers goal, before Brennan Johnson equalised on 49 minutes.

Solanke then took centre stage, putting Spurs ahead in the 75th minute with a delicate dink over Emiliano Martinez, after being played through on goal by Dejan Kulusevski.

He doubled his team's lead just four minutes later as he slotted home from close range, before James Maddison curled in a stunning late free-kick to complete the rout.

Solanke's quick-fire double saw him bring an end to his six-game goal drought, having last scored in Spurs' 3-0 win over Manchester United at the end of September.

This means the striker has now scored five goals in 13 games in all competitions following his summer switch from Bournemouth.

And the Premier League's all-time record goalscorer, Shearer, has revealed he fully expects Solanke to build on this total over the coming months.

Speaking on The Rest is Football podcast, Shearer heaped praise on him, saying: “Solanke’s [first] goal was a brilliant one, wasn't it?

“Kulusevski sort of fed him in, and then he dinked the goalkeeper, and then he got his second one.”

He then backed the centre-forward, who netted 19 times in the Premier League for Bournemouth last term, to go one better in an attack-minded Spurs side this time around.

Shearer continued: “I would hope and expect him to get 20 goals, at least this season, because of the way Spurs play and how many chances they create.

"I think for a forward, that's a really good team to play in because if he can stay fit with the players you've got there and how they whip balls into the box [he should get chances].

“The first goal was a great example, with [Heung-min] Son whipping it in and Johnson getting on the end of it.

“I think with the way they play, he should be at least getting 20 goals this season.”

Shearer's co-host, Gary Lineker, was also complimentary of the striker, and highlighted his all-round game and mental resilience as reasons as to why he is the right man to lead the line for Spurs.

Solanke struggled for playing time at first club Chelsea, and then Liverpool, before reigniting his career with the Cherries in the Championship, and later the Premier League

Ex-England and Tottenham striker Lineker said: “I like him a lot. I think he's come on.

"I think he's been a slow developer, hasn't he, over the years? He struggled at Liverpool, but then scored a lot of goals in the Championship.

"Then he came [into the Premier League], and now at Bournemouth, he'd done really well in the previous season."

Lineker also pointed to 27-year-old's ability to find form after a difficult start to life at Spurs as another huge strength of his, having taken until late September to open his account for the club.

He said: "It was obviously a big signing for Tottenham, and you wondered whether he could step up. [He] didn't have the greatest of starts, missed one or two chances early on.

“And the way he's come out of that and still scored goals makes me think he's mentally strong enough for that role now.

“I think his touch is good. He holds it up well. His movement's really good in the box, we saw that, obviously, for both his goals, really, particularly the [second] tap-in one. He gambled on where the ball might go.

“I think he's got a really, really good all-round game."

Tottenham 0-0 Aston Villa

Rodrigo Bentancur comes close!

Tottenham are building some momentum now as they have controlled the last few minutes.

Aston Villa just can't get out and it's been all Spurs.

After a spell of possession, the ball comes to Bentancur in space and he shoots from distance...

But the whipped effort goes just over the bar and clips the roof of the net as it flies over!

It's wave after wave of Tottenham attack at the moment.

Tottenham 0-0 Aston Villa

It's been an even affair so far.

After a slow start, Spurs have enjoyed some more possession, with their press from the front preventing Villa from getting out.

Dominic Solanke's header flew well over the bar a moment ago as he got on the end of a fast-paced free-kick from Heung-min Son.

That's the host's only real chance so far though, and it would have been impressive if he hit the target.

Neither side are playing at a very high tempo and that is impacting the atmosphere as things are very quiet.

Tottenham 0-0 Aston Villa

Aston Villa have started the brightest in north London.

Morgan Rogers blazed an effort over before Ollie Watkins was inches away from a dangerous cross into the box.

Unai Emery's side look confident on the ball and haven't given Tottenham much in the opening 10 minutes.

Matty Cash has been the recipient of some strong tackles early on, with Spurs seemingly not forgetting his past here.

The Villa right-back injured Rodrigo Bentancur in a previous meeting and he's being booed every time he touches the ball today.

Kick-off!

We're underway at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Tottenham can rise up to seventh in the table with a win and prove they have the character to bounce back from a shock loss.

But Aston Villa are loving their football and they have won three of their last four games away at Spurs.

It's set to be a thriller and we could see plenty of goals, so stick with us for regular updates!

Here's a reminder of how the two teams line up...

Safe for now

talkSPORT understands Julen Lopetegui retains the immediate backing of the West Ham board.

However, they are aware the Hammers' results need to improve.

Lopetegui has not made a great start to life back in the Premier League, losing five of his opening 10 games in charge.

A 3-0 embarrassment against Nottingham Forest yesterday has now piled huge pressure onto the Spanish boss.

West Ham spent over £100m on signings in the summer, but they are yet to see any signs of success under Lopetegui.

They face Everton at the London Stadium next week, in their final game before the November international break.

The manager still has the support of the board as mentioned, however, another loss could change that stance...

'Fans are fans'

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou has addressed some frustration from supporters ahead of today's game.

Spurs currently sit 10th in the Premier League after nine games, winning three and losing three of their last six.

A 1-0 defeat to Crystal Palace last week led to some criticism of his side, but Postecoglou has urged fans to understand that it won't be a 'smooth ride'.

"I keep saying this, fans are fans," he said. "There isn't a fan around the world who doesn't want their team to always be playing well.

"What we have to do, before the game and after the game is stay really focused on continuing to evolve into the team we want to be.

"At the moment, in the league, we have had some disappointing results but really only one disappointing performance and that was the Palace game. It wasn't a great performance, and we got what we deserved.

"We have to focus on that we continue to evolve, and learn from that, when we have had disappointments, we bounce back straight away which I think is important it is part of the evolution of the team.

"It is not going to be a smooth ride but within that, we don't want there to be too many times when we are not playing the football we want to."

Team news!

James Maddison has been dropped for Tottenham!

The midfielder is on the bench alongside Yves Bissouma with both losing their place following defeat to Crystal Palace last week.

Pape Matar Sarr and Rodrigo Bentancur come into the side while captain Heung-min Son returns out wide.

The injured Micky van de Ven doesn't feature, so it's Radu Dragusin slotting in next to Cristian Romero.

As for Aston Villa, Ollie Watkins and Morgan Rogers are back in the line-up after missing the Carabao Cup game in midweek.

John McGinn is the only player to retain his place in the team following that loss, with Unai Emery making 10 changes.

It's the same team that started their last league game though.

Tottenham XI: Vicario, Porro, Romero, Dragusin, Udogie, Bentancur, Kulusevski, Sarr, Johnson, Son, Solanke.

Subs: Forster, Davies, Gray, Bissouma, Bergvall, Maddison, Moore, Werner, Richarlison.

Aston Villa XI: Martinez, Cash, Konsa, Torres, Digne, Onana, Tielemans, McGinn, Ramsey, Rogers, Watkins.

Subs: Olsen, Maatsen, Carlos, Mings, Kamara, Philogene, Buendia, Bailey, Duran.

How things stand

Liverpool are the new Premier League leaders after both Arsenal and Manchester City slipped up yesterday.

Life under Arne Slot could hardly have started any better and with eight wins from 10 games the Reds are sitting pretty.

A shock inclusion in the top four is Nottingham Forest.

Nuno Espirito Santo's side have only lost one of their opening 10 and after beating West Ham, they're flying.

Chelsea can move above them today though, as Enzo Maresca takes on Ruud van Nistelrooy who will be on the touchline as Manchester United manager for the first time in the top flight.

Here's today's schedule:

Tottenham vs Aston Villa - 2pm

Manchester United vs Chelsea - 4:30pm

Team news for the opening clash of the day at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium will be up next...

Staying positive

Arsenal defender William Saliba has tried to remain positive after a loss to Newcastle yesterday afternoon.

The Gunners dropped seven points off the top of the Premier League table with the defeat and their title chances took a huge blow.

"We are a bit sad because we wanted to win here today," Saliba admitted post-match.

"Unfortunately we didn't because I don't think we played our best game. But we have to stick together and be ready for next week.

"Maybe we deserved a point, but I do not think we deserved to win today.

"They had one chance and they scored. We were on top trying to equalise, but I think we have to do better.

"The game is finished and we have to be focused on what's coming.

"When you lose, there's not a lot of positive things, but it's okay, we don't have to be so sad."

Not Palming off

Cole Palmer must get used to being targeted by opposition tactics as his reputation as a matchwinner grows, according to Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca.

The 22-year-old has scored 32 goals since arriving at Stamford Bridge at the start of last season and is the creative heartbeat of Maresca's impressive young side.

Chelsea travel to Old Trafford on Sunday to face a Manchester United side under the leadership of interim boss Ruud van Nistelrooy, who deployed two holding midfielders in the 5-2 Carabao Cup win over Leicester on Wednesday.

It was suggested to Maresca the move could have been in preparation for stymying Palmer when the teams meet in United's first Premier League outing since the sacking of Erik ten Hag.

"I'm ready for that," he said. "Cole, I don't know whether he's ready, you'll have to ask him.

"The next step for Cole is not to get frustrated when teams mark him man-to-man, because all the best players in the world are marked man-to-man.

"After last season, the first after arriving at Chelsea, it was the opposite, teams were not so worried about Cole.

"But this year they are worried so he has to start getting used to being marked man-to-man. The next step for him is knowing it will be more difficult."

Latest

Liverpool boss Arne Slot admits he doesn't know the severity of Ibrahima Konate's injury sustained during Liverpool's win over Brighton.

After the half-time whistle was blown at Anfield, Konate looked in huge discomfort as members of Liverpool's medical staff gave him some treatment.

As the French defender trudged off he was seen using the bottom of his shirt as a sling for his left arm.

The injury was caused by him slipping over and landing awkwardly when attacking a corner Liverpool had.

Joe Gomez was brought on as Konate's replacement at the start of the second half.

When asked about Konate's problem, Slot didn't give a lot away but said the player had not gone to hospital.

"Lot of pain at half time, disappointment he had to go off. Good thing is I have two very good options in Jarell Quansah and Gomez," Slot said in his post-match press conference.

"Quansah was tired at the end of [Carabao Cup tie against] Brighton, felt I had to bring in someone fitter than Jarell was. Konate? Don't know yet, not been hospital yet."

Guehi proud of Palace 'never say die attitude'

Marc Guehi has praised his Crystal Palace side for their resilience against Wolves.

Palace found themselves 2-1 down on Saturday but the defender scored in the 77th minute to salvage a crucial point on the road.

When asked on Sky Sports if he was shocked to see Palace losing after conceding two goals in five minutes before his equaliser, he said: "Not really.

"Wolves are really good, a really good side. I think they, especially in the last 15 minutes of games or so, they're really strong, they keep going.

"But I think the mentality and the character of the team is just to keep going, keep going until the end, that never say die attitude.

"We showed that today and I think it's important that we carry that on throughout the rest of the season."

FULL TIME! Wolves 2-2 Crystal Palace

It ends all square.

A very entertaining second half saw four goals scored with a point being shared in a result that neither side will be happy with.

Palace took the lead on the hour through Trevoh Chalobah's opener but 12 minutes later the hosts were ahead.

A slick finish by Jorgen Strand Larsen levelled the game before a clever finish by Joao Gomes made it 2-1 on 72 minutes.

But Oliver Glasner's men came back five minutes later through Marc Guehi's finish from close range following a corner.

Palace are two points above the relegation zone, while Wolves' wait for a first league win of the season goes on.

GOALS Wolves 2-1 Crystal Palace - Jorgen Strand Larsen and Joao Gomes

WHAT A TURNAROUND!

In the space of 12 second-half minutes Wolves have gone from 1-0 down to 2-1 up.

After Trevoh Chalobah put the away side in front on the hour Wolves hit back through Jorgen Strand Larsen's equaliser.

Larsen's composed finish came when Matheus Cunha played a simple pass to him.

And the hosts are now ahead through Gomes' first Premier League goal, the midfielder firing home into the near post after receiving the ball from Goncalo Guedes from the right.

What a massive three points this could be for Wolves.

Cryptic

Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak made it three goals in a week with a thunderous header from an Anthony Gordon cross against Arsenal to seal a big 1-0 win for the Toon.

The Swedish striker is the last of Newcastle's prized assets to sign a new deal.

Bruno Guimaraes and Gordon have both committed their future to the Magpies, but Isak is yet to.

There have been reports suggesting that the forward isn't keen to sign a new deal because he wants to play Champions League football.

Newcastle haven't started the season brilliantly, but that win today could transform their season.

However, when asked about his contract by talkSPORT'S Sam Matterface, he swerved the question.

He said: "I am enjoying myself, as I've always said.

"It's a great place, and all I am thinking about is doing good for the team.

"Keep winning and keep scoring."

Certainly, that's not the answer Newcastle fans wanted to hear.

NO GOAL! Southampton 1-0 Everton - VAR deny Everton

Everton have the ball in the back of the net through Beto.

But after a long, and I mean LONG, VAR check, it's ruled out by the narrowest of offside calls.

It's a cruel blow for the Toffees who thought they had equalised immediately with just a few minutes left to play.

But it's not to be.

'Welcome'

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has congratulated Ruben Amorim after he was named the new Manchester United head coach.

The 39-year-old has penned a three-year deal at Old Trafford and will start work on Monday, November 11.

Before that, his Sporting Lisbon side face Man City next week in the Champions League.

This will be the third time Guardiola has faced Amorim after they met in the Champions League in 2022.

City won one match 5-0 and the other was a 0-0 draw.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference ahead of City's game against Bournemouth, he said: "Welcome to United and to England. I will congratulate him next Tuesday. We faced each other two or three seasons ago in the Champions League, so welcome."

Pep's cryptic message

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has refused to confirm who is available for their game against Bournemouth.

The Citizens are without Rodri for the whole campaign, while Oscar Bobb has a broken leg.

But they are also without Jack Grealish, Kyle Walker and Jeremy Doku.

However, Savinho, Manuel Akanji and Josko Gvardiol all suffered injuries during the 2-1 defeat to Tottenham in the Carabao Cup.

But during his pre-match press conference, Guardiola didn't provide an update on any player.

He said:"Tomorrow, you will know. You will see it.

"I have many doubts. Most of them are 50/50, so tomorrow, you will find out.

"It is what it is. We have a lot of injuries, but it is what it is."

Sancho absence explained

Jadon Sancho made a great start to life at Chelsea, with three assists in his first three Premier League games.

The England winger started four consecutive top-flight matches in a row, but was suddenly on the bench against Newcastle United last Sunday.

He remained there for the full match, and then, he wasn't in the squad for the 2-0 defeat in the Carabao Cup at St James' Park.

But Enzo Maresca has confirmed that Sancho is struggling with illness.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference before the Blues play Man United, he said: "He has been ill the past days."

But Reece James and Wesley Fofana are fit to feature.

Ange on Ruben

Of course, Ange Postecoglou was asked about the new Manchester United manager, Ruben Amorim.

The Red Devils announced the 39-year-old would be Erik ten Hag's replacement earlier today, and he's signed a three-year deal.

Tottenham have been drawn to face Man United in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals, and Postecoglou is looking forward to that game and also welcoming Amorim.

Speaking first about the Carabao Cup contest, he said: "Good draw, it's a home game.

"For all clubs, it's welcome, no matter who you're playing it's going to be tough."

And on Amorim.

"He'll have his feet firmly under the desk by then, I look forward to meeting him."

Tottenham woe

Ange Postecoglou has confirmed that Tottenham star Micky van de Ven is out until after the international break.

The Dutchman suffered a hamstring injury during the 2-1 win over Manchester City in the Carabao Cup.

He lasted just 14 minutes before he hobbled off and looked close to tears.

He's since provided an update on social media suggesting he'll be back soon.

However, Postecoglou has confirmed he won't play the next two Premier League games.

Cristian Romero and Timo Werner are also doubtful, while Heung-min Son is back in training so could return to face Aston Villa.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference, he said: "Micky has sort of strained his hamstring. It's not too serious, but probably after the international break for him.

"Romero, Werner. At the moment, still a chance for the weekend.

"Sonny has trained today, so if he gets through training tomorrow, he should be okay."

Amorim: What to expect

Now that Manchester United have confirmed the appointment of Ruben Amorim as their new head coach on a three-year deal, fans will want to know what they are going to see from Man United.

Well, it's almost certain that Amorim will deploy a back three in a 3-4-3 formation.

This is similar to what Antonio Conte and Thomas Tuchel used while they were at Chelsea.

But, of course, there are many differences.

As in all back three formations, the wing-backs are vital to both attacking and defending, with Tottenham's Pedro Porro an example of what Amorim likes from his wing-backs, so expect some new wide defenders to arrive at Man United within the next year.

The two forwards behind the striker are often narrow, getting them closer to the striker and to the goal.

In possession, it's often very patient, while out of possession, Sporting were known for aggressively trying to win the ball back or putting ten men behind in front of their goal.

'They've got the right man'

Gabby Agbonlahor believes that Manchester United have found the right candidate to take the club forward in Ruben Amorim.

The Red Devils have confirmed the arrival of the 39-year-old from Sporting Lisbon.

He will be a head coach rather than a manager and has signed a three-year deal, with the option for an extra season.

And Agbonlahor revealed on talkSPORT Breakfast that he completed his coaching badges with the former Braga player.

He said: "I did my coaching badges with Amorim, and he was one of the ones that was into it.

"He had to get his badges. He was very focused."

Then speaking about his achievements, he said: "When you look at what he's done since leaving Braga and winning the title at Sporting for the first time in 19 years, I think Manchester United have got the right man."

Sporting confirm exit and fee

After Manchester United announced the arrival of Ruben Amorim as their new head coach from Sporting Lisbon, the Portuguese giants have followed suit.

They have released a statement that confirms the two clubs have come to an agreement over a fee for Amorim and that he will join the Red Devils once his notice period is finished.

Sporting Lisbon state that Man United have paid them 11 million Euros for Amorim, plus an additional 1.65 million for the termination of certain credit rights.

The statement reads as follows: "Sporting SAD reached an agreement with Manchester United FC (hereinafter MUFC) regarding the terms and conditions of coach Rúben Amorim's departure, in return for which MUFC will pay Sporting SAD Euro 11,000,000.

"Additionally, Sporting SAD will have a benefit of Euro 1,658,000, related to the extinction of credit rights, recorded as liabilities and contingent liabilities, as a result of the revocation and renegotiation of contracts relating to intermediation commissions."

Less transfer influence?

Manchester United have announced the arrival of Ruben Amorim as Erik ten Hag's replacement.

In a statement, they confirmed the the Portuguese coach had signed a three-year deal at Old Trafford, and he will start work on Monday, November 11.

This is so he can fulfill his notice period with Sporting Lisbon.

However, in the statement, the Red Devils confirm that Amorim is a 'head coach' and not a manager.

This is the first time in the club's history that United have named a head coach, and talkSPORT understands this will mean he has less transfer influence.

He will have no transfer veto and will work within the structure of the recruitment team.

Amorim announced

Manchester United have confirmed the appointment of Ruben Amorim as their new manager.

He has signed a deal until 2027, and he will join up with the Red Devils on Monday, November 11 after completing his notice period with Sporting Lisbon.

In a statement, the club said: "Manchester United is delighted to announce the appointment of Rúben Amorim as Head Coach of the men’s first team, subject to work visa requirements.

"He has signed a contract until June 2027 with a club option of an additional year. He will join Manchester United on Monday 11 November once he has fulfilled his obligations with Sporting CP.

"Rúben is one of the most exciting and highly rated young coaches in European football. Highly decorated as both a player and coach, his titles include winning the Primeira Liga twice in Portugal with Sporting CP, the first of which was the club’s first title in 19 years.

"Ruud van Nistelrooy will continue to take charge of the team until Rúben joins."

Options, options, options

Newcastle United manager has admitted that the performance of some players in midweek against Chelsea has given him some food for thought ahead of facing Arsenal this weekend.

The Magpies turned in their best performance of the season as they beat the Blues 2-0 at St James' Park to seal a spot in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals for the third consecutive season.

Howe didn't make too many changes, but the likes of Lloyd Kelly, Emil Krafth, Sean Longstaff and Joe Willock all started, and all impressed.

Sandro Tonali also thrived in a deeper role, playing where Bruno Guimarares usually does for the Toon.

Certainly, there could be some tweaks to his usual team, and he implied that could be the case at his press conference.

He said: "It was good to see so many players performing well, it was good to be able to rotate some of the squad and see the strength in depth we have.

"We will pick a team for Saturday according to physical wellbeing and our opponent."

Contract latest

Liverpool manager Arne Slot was once against asked about the contract situations of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah.

The trio are all out of contract at the end of the season, with no new deals on the horizon.

Van Dijk revealed recently he was now in talks with the Reds over extending his Anfield stay, but that he still wasn't sure what would happen.

Slot specifically spoke about Van Dijk and revealed he doesn't talk to his fellow Dutchman about his future.

Speaking ahead of Liverpool's game against Brighton, he said: "There are onging discussion with the people Virgil says he has to talk to, and that's not me, as you know. I talk to him about other things.

"Virgil is completely right that he doesn't know what his future is if he hasn't signed the contract yet."

Star boy 2.0

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has lauded Ethan Nwaneri with praise.

The 17-year-old starred in the 3-0 win over Preston North End in midweek as the Gunners made it into the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup.

Nwaneri, who is the youngest-ever Premier League debutant, scored the pick of the goals with a stunning left-footed strike that rocketed into the top corner.

Despite shining in the cup, he's not been given much chance in the league, even with Martin Odegaard out.

But Arteta is clearly a huge fan.

Speaking ahead of their game against Newcastle United, he said: "I can talk about how good he is right now and at 17 years old and doing the position that he is at one of the biggest clubs in Europe, I think that sums up really well the level he has.

"What happens in the future is going to mainly depend on him and how much he wants it.

"At the moment, he wants it a lot, and he is surrounded by the right people.

"It is rare to see a talent like this at 17, that's true.

"When he made his debut in the Premier League there was a lot of talk about it. We didn't do it as a gift, we did it because we knew the pathway we wanted to build with him and we wanted to send him a really strong sign about how much we trust him and how much we wanted him to stay with us.

"We are delighted to have him."

Newcastle facing striker crisis

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has suggested he could be without Alexander Isak and Callum Wilson for tomorrow's game against Arsenal.

Wilson has yet to play a minute for the Toon this season, and he's currently building up his load before returning to the squad after the international break.

This has left Alexander Isak to carry the burden despite the forward struggling with a toe injury earlier in the campaign.

He started both of the Toon's matches against Chelsea this week, scoring in both and playing over 150 minutes.

And Howe has implied he could be forced to rest Isak, meaning William Osula would get a first start.

The Dane has yet to start a league game for his new club after joining from Sheffield United in the summer.

Speaking about Wilson, Howe said: "Callum is doing okay, he’s building his load again. There was no real injury but just a feeling in his body that he couldn’t push as hard as he wanted. We’ll see how he is but probably with the two-week gap it's best to leave it."

And when asked about Isak and Anthony Gordon, he said: "They both feel OK, we will assess how they feel today, 48 hours after the game. They have both had niggling injuries so we’ll make a decision today. We need to make sure whoever enters the pitch against Arsenal is in the best physical condition."

Triple blow

Arne Slot has revealed that Diogo Jota, Alisson Becker and Federico Chiesa are out until after the international break.

Speaking ahead of the Reds facing Brighton at Anfield, the Dutchman was asked about the trio, and he had bad news on all of them.

Alisson suffered a hamstring injury during the 1-0 win over Crystal Palace and was initially ruled out for a minimum of six weeks.

Jota suffered a rib injury during a 2-1 victory over Chelsea, while Chiesa is struggling with an unknown issue.

When asked about Jota and Alisson's return, Slot said: "I have said already that it is always difficult to tell you when they will be ready.

"The fact is that they are not ready before the international break."

On Chiesa, he said: "Chiesa is not back before the international break.

"We are hoping that he can return to training during the international break."

Mixed news

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has provided the injury news ahead of his team's trip to face Newcastle United tomorrow, live on talkSPORT.

The Gunners boss had a mixed update for Arsenal fans.

The good news for the north London club is that Gabriel Magalhaes has a chance of being involved.

The Brazilian was withdrawn in the second half against Liverpool, but had a scan and that showed there wasn't a serious injury.

Speaking about Gabriel, he said: "Yes, it’s good news on Gabriel. We have a training session today. If he’s able to do that he’ll be in the squad."

Meanwhile, Riccardo Calafiori, Takehiro Tomiyasu and Martin Odegaard are definitely out.

Ben White is also doubtful and faces a late fitness test.

Speaking about White, Odegaard and Calafiori, he said: "Riccy and Martin are out definitely.

"With Ben we don’t know yet. He could not train so let’s see what happens."

'Soap opera'

Ruben Amorim has described the saga surrounding his move to Manchester United as a 'soap opera'.

The Sporting manager is set to become the new Red Devils boss after Erik ten Hag was sacked on Monday.

However, the 39-year-old will stay at Sporting for their next three matches and join United after the November international break.

While there has been no official confirmation from either club, Amorim said he will address the situation properly after the Premeira Liga clash with Estrela da Amadora on Friday.

"The soap opera is coming to an end," he said in a press conference on Thursday.

"The fact that I can't be so clear creates a lot of difficulty for me."

Wholesome Kante

If you were wondering what N'Golo Kante is up to these days, this news will melt your heart.

The former Chelsea and Leicester star has been playing out in the Saudi Pro League with Al Ittihad since his move there last summer.

And yes, he's still as wholesome as ever.

The 2018 World Cup winner was seen picking up countless fan-thrown flags off the pitch to get his side's game against Al Ahli back underway.

The flags had been thrown after his side went 1-0 up and fans had tried to stop the visitors getting back into the game, seeing the game stopped for five minutes.

Never change, N'Golo!

Micky Back When?

Tottenham defender Micky van de Ven has posted a cryptic photo on his Instagram story after going off injured against Manchester City.

The Dutchman had to be taken off less than 15 minutes into Spurs' eventual 2-1 Carabao Cup victory on Wednesday after injuring his hamstring.

The extent of his injury, which he suffered after racing back to tackle Savinho, is unknown.

The defender himself has now posted about it, uploading a black and white version of a photo of him during the game.

"Back soon," he wrote on the image.

What are they Gunner do?

Arsenal are dealing with a potential fixture dilemma after getting into the quarter-final of the Carabao Cup.

The Gunners saw off Championship Preston North End 3-0 on Wednesday, but it's not clear when they will be able to play their home clash against Crystal Palace in the next round.

This is because the London derby cup tie is on the same week as Arsenal Women's Champions League game against Bayern Munich, which is set for Wednesday December 18.

As it stands, that is the only viable day the Gunners can play their Carabao Cup game, given Palace face Brighton on Monday on Sky Sports, and then face Arsenal at home on that Saturday.

Pog back

Arsenal fan Darren Bent thinks that Paul Pogba would be a great addition to Mikel Arteta's team.

The Frenchman was initially banned for four years earlier this year after testing positive for doping.

However, after a hearing at the Court of Arbitration for Sport earlier this month, his suspension has been reduced to 18 months after they agreed with his statement that he accidentally took the substance, meaning he'll be able to play football again next year.

And Bent thinks Arsenal should sign him.

Speaking on talkSPORT, he said: "I think this situation has humbled Paul Pogba because going through something like that must be tough.

"He knows he isn't in a place of strength where he once was.

"If he goes to a top club, he knows he would have to be a rotation or squad player.

"I would take Paul Pogba at Arsenal.

"He's still got the quality there, he just hasn't shown it.

"Mikel Arteta has been good at judging characters, and he'll sit down with Paul Pogba and be able to tell what character is there and how much hunger is left.

"If you can integrate Paul Pogba with the quality he has, I would take that."

Exit door approaching

Crystal Palace co-owner John Textor is in talks with a global sports investment group about selling his stake in Crystal Palace.

The American businessman owns 45 per cent of the Eagles and is willing to part ways for £230 million.

This would make Palace's overall value £500m.

Textor bought his shares in the Premier League club in 2021 for about £85m, so he stands to nearly triple his initial investment.

The company that is locked in talks with Textor is Sportsbank, which is a collection of investors from all over the world.

Zechariah Janjua and Navshir Jaffer are two of those leading the negotiations, and they are Crystal Palace fans.

But there are other interested parties in Textor's shares, who has a fractured relationship with Steve Parish and is looking for a way out.

Morgan's big payday

Aston Villa are in talks with Morgan Rogers over a new contract that will see him earn a huge age increase.

The versatile attacking player joined the Villans from Middlesbrough in January earlier this year, but he has become a crucial player for Unai Emery.

Rogers has 12 appearances in all competitions this season, starting every Premier League and Champions League match.

He has two goals and three assists, and could have so many more.

His approach play, control and skill are a joy to watch, and The Athletic report that Rogers is in contract discussions.

It's unclear how much he will earn, but it will be a big pay rise.

‘You never learn’ – Tottenham fan gets brutal put-down from talkSPORT host after trophy claim

Jason Cundy continued his Tottenham ribbing rampage in a hilarious exchange with a fan after Spurs’ victory over Manchester City.

Chelsea fan Cundy has a night to forget after the Blues were dumped out of the Carabao Cup at Newcastle on Wednesday night.

But it was a contrasting evening for Ange Postecoglou’s men who saw off Manchester City 2-1 to book their place in the quarter final.

Spurs are without a trophy since their EFL Cup success in 2008, however Wednesday’s victory over the Premier League champions got fan Mike dreaming of an end to his team’s long-running trophy drought.

Mike contacted the Sports Bar after the match to speak to hosts Cundy and Jamie O’Hara and what began as a Tottenham themed discussion quickly turned into some good natured rivalry banter.

After the news broke that Spurs had been handed a quarter-final home tie against Manchester United, a confident Mike said: “Brilliant, we’ll smash them. We’ll tear them to pieces.

Cundy, who rarely misses an opportunity to fire shots at the north London club, was quick off the mark in an attempt to bring the fan back down to earth with a huge bump.

“You’re still Spurs, Michael. When are you going to get used to that?,” Cundy responded.

But Mike came fully armed and ready to take on the talkSPORT host who was reeling from his side’s 2-0 defeat at St James’ Park.

“Come on Cundy, you can’t talk after tonight’s performance, you’re having a little cry in the corner there,” said the Spurs fan.

Cundy dug deeper and fired back, saying: “How many titles have you seen?”

Mike replied: “Don’t even go there Cundy, there’s no need for that is there? I’m 43, don’t ruin it for me.”

It didn’t end there. Asked how he sees Tottenham fairing in this season’s Carabao Cup, Mike said. “I think we will win it.”

It all became too much for Cundy who interrupted with his head in his hands, saying: “You lot never learn do you? All you need to know is, you’re just Spurs."

“Were in the next round,” Mike responded to which Cundy replied, “You know what that means? More disappointment.”

It was all good natured fun between the pair for the time being but it remains to be seen whether a high-anticipated sequel will air on talkSPORT following Chelsea’s trip to Spurs on December 8.

Meanwhile, Newcastle’s reward for seeing off Enzo Maresca’s side is a home tie against Brentford.

City in crisis

Pep Guardiola has revealed the extent of Manchester City's injury crisis, after picking up three more issues last night.

Savinho was stretchered off against Tottenham in the Carabao Cup while Manuel Akanji and Ruben Dias seemed to pick up knocks.

If they are to miss out, they will join Kevin De Bruyne, Kyle Walker, Jack Grealish, Jeremy Doku, Oscar Bobb and Rodri on the sidelines.

And it leaves Man City with an extremely depleted squad...

"We have 13 players, we are in real difficulties," Guardiola said after their 2-1 loss to Tottenham last night.

"The guys that play, they finish most of them with problems and we'll see how they recover.

"I think we are in trouble, because in nine years we've never been in the situation with so many injuries.

"The players make a step forward, more together than ever, and we will try to do this week in this short time of recovery."

He added: "If these guys don't come back as quickly as possible, we'll struggle, because we cannot sustain with just 14, 15 players for the season.

"We need the players to come back."

'The plan'

Manchester City manager has revealed that he never had any intention of involving Erling Haaland this evening.

The Norwegian was named on the bench for the Citizens' 2-1 defeat to Tottenham in the Carabao Cup, and he remained there for the full game.

Instead, Guardiola turned to other options, and speaking after the match, he revealed that Haaland was never going to play.

He said: "The plan was for him to not play today.

"He's played a lot of minutes, and I didn't want to waste energy for him."

Meanwhile, Savinho was stretchered off, and Guardiola was also asked about him.

"We'll see tomorrow."

"Jack Grealish and Kyle Walker also have no chances of playing in the next games."

What an evening of Carabao Cup action, and the 7:45 games are all now over.

Aston Villa are out.

They've lost 2-1 at home to Crystal Palace, who opened the scoring through Eberechi Eze before he went off injured.

Luckily, his replacement, Daichi Kamada, came off the bench to drill a low shot into the bottom corner to seal the big win for Oliver Glasner's men.

The post-Erik ten Hag era at Manchester United started with a 5-2 battering of Leicester City.

The Red Devils were 4-2 up at half time thanks to goals from Casemiro, Bruno Fernandes and Alejandro Garnacho.

The second half was somehwhat a disappointment with just one goal from Fernandes.

Meanwhile, Newcastle United beat Chelsea 2-0 at St James' Park.

Given the Magpies are winless since September in the league, it was a huge win for Eddie Howe's men, who are into the last eight.

Arsenal proved to be far too good for Preston, as they ran out 3-0 winners at Deepdale.

Tottenham draw Man United in Carabao Cup quarter-finals as Arsenal and Liverpool also learn opponents

Tottenham have been drawn Manchester United in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup after a 2-1 win over Manchester City.

The fixture headlines the action between the last eight teams with the other ties seeing Arsenal entertain Crystal Palace, Newcastle play host to Brentford and Liverpool travel to Southampton.

Spurs were the biggest story from the evening as they knocked out regular Premier League winners City 2-1 as Pep Guardiola's side failed to come back from early Timo Werner and Pape Matar Sarr goals.

Their quarter-final opponents, Manchester United, also saw victory in their first game since Erik ten Hag's firing as interim Ruud van Nistelrooy recorded a 5-2 win.

However, Van Nistelrooy likely won't be in place for the December meeting as talkSPORT understands that Sporting CP's Ruben Amorim has verbally agreed to join the club.

Having knocked out arguably the best team in Europe, Spurs have already gone further in the domestic cups than they did in the past two seasons.

Manager Ange Postecoglou received criticism last season for falling at the first hurdle in the Carabao Cup while the north London side exited the FA Cup in just the fourth round.

The Australian coach said it's a 'fact' that he always wins a trophy in his second season, and after knocking out City to reach the quarter finals, Spurs fans may have renewed hope of a first title since 2008.

Elsewhere on the night, holders Liverpool defeated Brighton 3-2, Chelsea lost 2-0 to Newcastle and Arsenal breezed past Championship outfit Preston 3-0.

There was an upset of sorts as Crystal Palace also overcame high-flyers Aston Villa 2-1 away at Villa Park.

However, that match and Spurs' clash also saw some bad news for the victors, with two key players picking up worrying injuries.

Spurs' Micky van de Ven and Palace's Eberechi Eze both had to be substituted off and now the London sides will be sweating on their fitness.

A day earlier Southampton set up their Liverpool tie by beating Stoke 3-2, while Brentford progressed with a penalty shoot-out win over Sheffield Wednesday.

All quarter final fixtures will be played on the week of December 17, with the Wembley final scheduled for March 16.

Carabao Cup LIVE: Tottenham welcome Manchester City, Van Nistelrooy takes charge of Man United, Chelsea travel to Newcastle

'Mixed emotions'

Ahead of Manchester United's Carabao Cup tie against Leicester this evening, interim manager Ruud van Nistelrooy has penned some programme notes.

The ex-United striker was brought back to Old Trafford in the summer by Erik ten Hag to work with is fellow Dutchman as an assistant.

However, Ten Hag is gone, and Ruben Amorim is in line to be his permanent replacement.

But for now, Van Nistelrooy takes the team, and he's paid tribute to Ten Hag.

Writing in the programme, he said: "As I am sure everyone can imagine, I am writing these notes with a huge amount of mixed emotions.

"Erik ten Hag brought me to Manchester United in the summer, and while I have only been part of the coaching staff for a few months, I will always be grateful to him for giving me the opportunity, and I am saddened to see him leave."

Stand off

talkSPORT understands that Manchester United's pursuit of Ruben Amorim risks being drawn out.

This is because Sporting want their boss to stay in Portugal until the November international break before then allowing him to head to Old Trafford.

Amorim himself wants Friday's game CF Estrela da Amadora to be his last.

However, he wants to be respectful to his current club and could wait.

Sporting are due to play Manchester City in the Champions League next week, and it seems Amorim will be in charge for that one, meaning he'll face Pep Guardiola this season as Sporting boss and Man United gaffer.

The Red Devils are continuing to negotiate with Amorim's club in order to find a solution to a strange situation.

Carabao Cup focus

It's a huge night in the Carabao Cup this evening as the round of 16 comes to an end.

There are some great fixtures, and we will lose three of Tottenham, Manchester City, Chelsea, Newcastle United, Liverpool and Brighton.

Elsewhere, Ruud van Nistelrooy takes temporary charge of Manchester United against Leicester City at Old Trafford.

The Dutchman has stayed on to fill the role as interim manager after his fellow countryman was sacked on Monday.

The Red Devils have agreed a deal for Ruben Amorim to join, but the Sporting are insisting that he remain with the Portuguese giants until the November international break.

So, Van Nistelrooy could be in charge for quite some time.

Arsenal and Aston Villa are also in action as well.

Remember me?

Now here's a player you may have forgotten about...

Ayoze Perez is absolutely loving life back in Spain.

The former Newcastle and Leicester forward is starring for Villarreal and he achieved an incredible feat in the Copa del Rey last night.

With three goals and two assists against Poblense, Perez became the first Villarreal player to be involved in five goals in a single game since the 2014/15 season.

It wasn't just that game where he's stood out though, as his impressive performance continued his run of scoring.

Perez has now found the net in his last six club games.

The 31-year-old has scored 10 goals in nine appearances for Villarreal since joining from Real Betis in the summer.

He never managed to hit this sort of form in England, making 179 Newcastle appearances and scoring 42 goals in total.

At Leicester, he only netted 12 in 80 games, meaning he's already almost caught up to that tally in his first nine at Villarreal!

Make or Break

Ally McCoist believes the time is now for Marcus Rashford to prove he is good enough for Manchester United.

Rashford has struggled over the last couple of seasons under Erik ten Hag and started this campaign poorly too.

He has one goal and one assist in nine Premier League games so far and fell victim to being dropped multiple times by Ten Hag.

Now the Dutchman has gone, the England international will need to rebuild his reputation under a new manager.

And McCoist think it's a crucial stage for him, saying on talkSPORT Breakfast: "It's make or break time for Marcus, it really is.

"You can talk about managers coming in and whether it's Mourinho, or Van Gaal or Ole or Ten Hag...

"Never mind the manager, just go and play! Go and put a level of performance in yourself.

"If he asks you to go and do a job, go and do it!"

First words

Ruud van Nistelrooy will be in charge of Manchester United as they take on Leicester in the Carabao Cup tonight, live on talkSPORT 2.

He is stepping in as interim boss after Erik ten Hag was sacked on Monday, but this could be his only game as manager.

With Ruben Amorim potentially signing before Sunday, it might be one-and-done for the Man United legend.

However, Van Nistelrooy is looking forward to the opportunity to lead the team out at Old Trafford this evening.

His first words as stand-in manager will be in the matchday programme and he said: “As I am sure everyone can imagine, I am writing these notes with a huge amount of mixed emotions.

"Erik ten Hag brought me back to Manchester United in the summer and, while I have only been part of the coaching staff here for a few months, I will always be grateful to him for giving me the opportunity, and I am saddened to see him leave.

“Even on an interim basis, it is a great honour to manage the club I love for however long I am asked to do so.

"I can promise that I will continue to give my all, in whatever capacity, to try to turn around our fortunes."

Van Nistelrooy added: “Now is the time for everyone at the club to work together, give everything and turn this season around while we have time.

"From my experiences as both a player and a coach here, I can say for sure that when players, staff and supporters pull together, Manchester United can be unstoppable.

"When I returned in the summer as Erik’s assistant, it was because I believe that Manchester United can climb back to the levels that I knew here as a player.

"I still have that belief, but it will take time and a lot of hard work."

'I have to be honest'

Jurgen Klopp has spoken for the first time about the controversy surrounding his new job at Red Bull.

Klopp was heavily criticised by fans in Germany for joining the Red Bull system which is still frowned upon in the country.

Supporters of his former clubs Borussia Dortmund and Mainz felt betrayed and the latter's fanbase even displayed a banner at a game questioning him.

The ex-Liverpool manager understands the frustration but he admitted the opportunity was 'outstanding'.

“I didn’t want to step on anyone’s toes, absolutely not and I love all of my former clubs,” he explained on Toni Kroos' podcast - Einfach mal Luppen.

“But I don’t really know what I could have done to make everyone happy.

“It was always clear, well, clear to me, that I wouldn’t do nothing. And then the Red Bull story came up.

"It was an outstanding [option], and I have to be honest about that.”

Klopp also explained what he will be doing in his role at Red Bull, saying: “Basically, I’m an advisor.

"Hopefully, I can bring calm in different ways and, in other situations, assess things correctly and help the coaches.

“But I just want to support, not interfere, because I know how disruptive that is.

"Instead, I want to pass on my experience and work in the world that I know best.”

Not leaving yet

Ruben Amorim's release clause at Sporting Lisbon has a 30-day notice period, talkSPORT understands.

However, Sporting and Manchester United are negotiating over the manager leaving the club sooner.

Separate talks are ongoing to have three backroom staff members, including long-term assistant Carlos Fernandes, join Amorim at United.

The 39-year-old will still be in charge of Sporting on Friday when they take on Estrela in the Primeira Liga.

But a full agreement could still be reached with Man United ahead of that clash.

Amorim dampened hopes of an appointment before United take on Chelsea on Sunday after playing down the reports of his switch to Old Trafford last night.

The deal is still set to happen though, with the clubs in talks, specifically over his start date and compensation.

Man United are relaxed about the finer points in negotiations with no Chelsea-specific deadline in mind.

De Bruyne update

Pep Guardiola has admitted that he doesn't know when Kevin De Bruyne is going to return from injury.

De Bruyne hasn't played a minute since he picked up an issue against Inter Milan in the Champions League on September 18.

The Belgian missed four months of last season with a hamstring problem and there are concerns of his second long layoff continuing.

"I would like to tell you [when he can return], I especially would like to know, but I don't know," Guardiola admitted.

"He feels better to train but to go to the level we need for competition he still has pain. Kevin has to feel good to express the huge talent that he has."

Asked if the injury was more complicated than it initially appeared, the Man City boss added: "Yeah, that's why I'm not a doctor. He's feeling better but not the best.

"If he doesn't come back as quick as possible we will struggle because we cannot sustain it with 14 or 15 players but it is what it is.

"We need players to come back but it is what it is. Hopefully, that can happen after the international break."

Pep talk

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has made an offer to Erik ten Hag after he was sacked on Monday.

Guardiola addressed Ten Hag's dismissal and kept the door open at the Etihad for him to potentially help the Dutchman out.

He said: “Ten Hag can come to see us any time, seriously.

“We are always open but I think he knows exactly what we do and it’s not going to happen but I know his agent a little bit, there is a relationship and it’s no problem for us.

“Managers don’t need advice because they know exactly what they have to do. The reality in every team is exactly what they have to do.

"But the reality is every club is different, players are different. To copy and paste this one for this one doesn’t work.”

Guardiola added: “Always, I feel sorry for managers [when they are sacked], you know? He's lost his position, so I'm so sorry for him.

“I have an incredible relationship [with him]. I think he represented Manchester United at the highest level in terms of behaviour, of course.

“Our job as managers is one of the few jobs – in all the jobs in the world – where people are expecting to be sacked. People are expecting you don't have a job.

“I don't see architects or doctors or teachers or anything... the people deciding [their futures don't say], ‘get out.’ It's only us. It's our job, we have to accept it.”

Nothing Amor to say

Ruben Amorim has poured cold water on an imminent announcement of a move to Manchester United.

The Portuguese coach has insisted 'nothing is decided yet' following Sporting Lisbon's 3-1 win over Nacional earlier this evening.

Amorim was given a warm ovation from the home crowd expecting the Portuguese League Cup quarter-final to be his final game.

However, talkSPORT understands Amorim will be in charge of Sporting's match against Estrela da Amadora on Friday.

The 39-year-old all-but confirmed his course of action while speaking to media on the speculation after tonight's victory, saying: “Nothing is decided yet… I don't know if it's the farewell game or not.”

Amorim's body language backed up what he said, having not shown the home supporters the same emotion adorned onto him.

Following the full-time whistle, he gave a hug to Nacional boss Tiago Margarido before heading straight down the tunnel.

talkSPORT understands Amorim has verbally agreed personal terms with Man United to succeed the sacked Erik ten Hag.

United have informed Sporting they will pay the €10million (£8.3m) release clause in Amorim’s contract to bring him to Old Trafford.

But the man himself kept his cards close to his chest in his post-match press conference, adding: "I have nothing to say for now.

"Anything I say will only create more noise. There is nothing to say. There is the club's statement.

"As for the rest, we will see. It will be my decision."

FT: Brentford 1-1 Sheffield Wednesday (Brentford win 5-4 on penalties)

The Bees are through to the Carabao Cup quarter-finals following some penalty-saving heroics from Mark Flekken.

The Dutch goalkeeper had been caught out by Djeidi Gassama from 25 yards out after the break to cancel out Kevin Schade's early goal.

However, Flekken proved the hero in the shootout after diving low to his right to keep out Liam Palmer following nine perfect spot-kicks.

Elsewhere, Southampton needed an 88-minute winner from James Bree to secure a first home victory of the season.

The Saints threw away the two-goal lead they'd had at half-time over Championship rivals Stoke City but ultimately battled back to win.

Preston North End are now the only non-Premier League side left in the competition ahead of a clash with Arsenal tomorrow.

Flying with the Eagles

Crystal Palace majority owner John Textor is looking to complete the sale of his interest in the club within weeks.

The American, who wanted to buy Everton, owns 45 per cent of their Premier League rivals through his Eagle Football Holdings.

Textor has engaged the Raine Group, who handled the sale of Chelsea, to seek a buyer for Eagle Football's stake.

A statement published on the company's website read: "The Raine Group is leading the sale process for Eagle Football’s interest in Crystal Palace Football Club, through which we expect to identify a finalist and buyer in early November 2024."

Billionaire Textor was granted a period of exclusivity to explore a possible purchase of Everton in August.

The deal was contingent on him selling his Palace shares as Premier League rules forbid him from owning two clubs in the same division.

However, current Toffees owner Farhad Moshiri then accepted a lower offer from Roma's Dan Friedkin than Textor was willing to pay to ensure a smoother and quicker sale of the club after growing tired of waiting for the latter.

Moshiri will walk away having made a significant loss on his £700m investment after agreeing to sell his 94.1 per cent stake in the Merseysiders to the Friedkin Group, fronted by Friedkin.

That's Amore

Ruben Amorim was given a warm applause by Sporting Lisbon fans ahead of his potential final game as manager tonight.

The Portuguese coach has verbally agreed personal terms with Manchester United to succeed the sacked Erik ten Hag.

United have informed Sporting they will pay the €10million (£8.3m) release clause in Amorim's contract to bring him to Old Trafford.

Ruud van Nistelrooy is in interim charge, but talkSPORT understands the club hopes to have their new man in to face Chelsea on Sunday.

To do that, Amorim will have had to have signed his paperwork with the Premier League by midday Friday - hours before Sporting's crunch clash with Estrela da Amadora.

This means that his final outing at the Estádio José Alvalade could be tonight if United get their way.

Sporting are currently being held to a goalless draw by Nacional in the Portuguese League Cup quarter-final.

Before kick-off, the home fans in attendance gave Amorim a polite, if albeit, underwhelming round of applause.

Real show of arrogance

Simon Jordan has slammed Real Madrid for their 'sense of entitlement' following their response to Vinicius Jr’s Ballon d’Or snub.

The Brazilian missed out on the award on Monday night, finishing second behind Manchester City midfielder Rodri.

Vinicius Jr had appeared the favourite to take home the trophy after playing a key role in Real Madrid’s Champions League success.

So much so that an after-party had been planned in Paris by the player and his staff, according to The Athletic.

Meanwhile, Nike had prepared special boots for Vinicius Jr to mark the expected victory along with an event in Madrid to be attended by the player, his loved ones and celebrities.

Instead, though, Los Blancos boycotted the event altogether after learning Vinicius Jr would come second behind Rodri and ahead of teammate Jude Bellingham on the podium.

Reacting to the fallout on the White & Jordan show, the talkSPORT pundit said: “It’s arrogance. It’s a sense of entitlement."

Geor dropping

Newcastle have announced that the club have completed a deal to sign highly-rated Vakhtang Salia from Dinamo Tbilisi.

The Magpies confirmed as part of the transfer for the Georgian forward that he will remain in his homeland until next summer.

The 17-year-old will then officially move to Tyneside on his 18th birthday in August 2025.

Salia had been linked to Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund.

He was likened to Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard by Eastern European football expert Artur Petrosyan in The Guardian’s Next Generation list of top players born in 2007.

Paul Mitchell, Newcastle Sporting Director, said: "We're delighted to get ahead of a number of other top clubs to sign Vakhtang.

"Scouting and recruiting emerging talent is an essential part of building a sustainable future, particularly within the current PSR framework, so the market is fiercely competitive.

"We continue to scout extensively, both domestically and overseas, with a view to securing players who can come through our talent pathway and, ideally, become part of the first team in future.

"We look forward to working with Vakhtang and wish him every success during his remaining time with Dinamo Tbilisi."

Saudi reunion?

Former Liverpool midfielder Fabinho has been speaking about reports linking Mo Salah and Virgil van Dijk to Saudi Arabia.

The Brazilian now plays for Al Ittihad and talkSPORT's Saudi correspondent Ben Jacobs has asked him whether he has been in touch to try and get his ex-teammates to join him.

But Fabinho responded: "No, I haven't talked to them lately. To be honest, I didn't see any news about them coming to Saudi Arabia or leaving Liverpool.

"I know that they have some players like Mo, Virgil and Trent at the end of their contract. I think Liverpool are desperately to get them a new contract.

"But yes, this is not with me. It's not my problem anymore. So, yes, that's it."

He also spoke about Liverpool's strong start to life under Arne Slot this season, adding: "For me, it's normal because Liverpool have one of the best teams in the Premier League in Europe.

"So it's not a surprise for me how well they are doing at the moment.

"I think they have everything to fight with Man City. For me, unfortunately, City is still the best team in the league. It's the team to beat in the league, but Liverpool have everything to fight with them.

"Arne Slot is doing a very good job at the moment, so I really hope Liverpool will keep this form until the end of the season. Hopefully, we'll bring some important trophies this season."

Arteta on injuries

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has given an update on Gabriel, Jurrien Timber, Riccardo Calafiori and Martin Odegaard.

The Gunners are going through an injury crisis and both Timber and Gabriel were substituted with knocks against Liverpool.

There were worries that they would join Odegaard and Calafiori on the sidelines but Arteta has now explained their situation.

When asked about Gabriel's fitness, he said: "We’re still assessing him. It doesn’t look that bad.

"He was much better the next day. Too soon to say when he’ll be out."

"Jurrien is fine, he was obviously very tired, he's been out for a while and he coudn't continue," the Arsenal boss added.

"But there is no new injury there at all. He could not continue and we decided to make a very safe call."

The news wasn't as good on Calafiori though, who will remain out for a while, with Odegaard still recovering too.

Arteta stated: "Calafiori will be out for a few weeks, I would say.

"He [Odegaard] has been on the grass for a few weeks but there is still a few boxes to tick.

"Hopefully he’ll be back before the international break."

Ups and downs

It's a story of two injuries for Tottenham this afternoon.

A major positive for Spurs is that captain Heung-min Son is expected to be back in action this weekend against Aston Villa.

However, summer signing Wilson Odobert has suffered another 'serious' setback and won't be available for a while.

Speaking ahead of Wednesday's cup clash with Manchester City, manager Ange Postecoglou said: "Son is almost fit but probably from our perspective we'll aim for the weekend.

"We're quite confident he'll be right for the weekend."

Postecoglou added: "The only other one missing out which is a bit of a disappointment is Wilson, who has had a setback during the week.

"It seems like it is a serious one so we're just waiting for more information."

Shaw setback

Manchester United defender Luke Shaw's spell on the sidelines is set to continue after another setback.

Left-back Shaw was eyeing a comeback after working hard to recover from a calf issue suffered in pre-season.

However, in his final press conference as Man United manager at the weekend, Erik ten Hag gave an update on his condition.

And it wasn't good news for the England international whose last appearance was for the Three Lions in the Euro 2024 final.

"The process is not going as we expected," Ten Hag said about Shaw, who also hasn't feature for United since February. "That's the truth.

"The setback, if you want to call it like this, we want also to do it very careful. When he is now dropping again, we want to be very careful.

"We know his past, we have to do this right, because we want him to be available, because he will have a big impact on our performances and also on our levels.

"We can't have him playing for some games and then drop out again. So, we will do it very carefully."

'I'm so sorry for Erik ten Hag'

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has given his thoughts on Erik ten Hag being sacked by Manchester United.

The Spaniard is hopeful that his now former rival will be able to bounce back from the disappointment.

Speaking at his Carabao Cup press conference this afternoon, Guardiola said: “I'm so sorry for Erik ten Hag.

“I have an incredible relationship and he represents Man United in the highest level in terms of behaviour.

“This game always depends on results, we can be at risk.

“He’s going to come back stronger”.

In a Jota bother

Arne Slot has confirmed that Diogo Jota is expected to miss Liverpool's next four games.

Jota has been out of action since picking up a rib injury following a tangle with Chelsea's Tosin Adarabioyo earlier this month.

And now it's been confirmed he's set for more time on the sidelines.

Asked whether Jota will be back before the upcoming international break which starts on November 11, Slot said: "No, it will be after that. [Harvey] Elliott the same."

That means the forward will miss Liverpool's cup and league games against Brighton, a Champions League meeting with Bayer Leverkusen and top-flight match against Aston Villa.

Should he recover in time, he will be back in action for the Reds' trip to Southampton and a huge clash against Real Madrid.

Federico Chiesa is out too and Slot gave an update on his summer signing's current condition.

"He [Chiesa] goes a bit up and down so sometimes he's there with us training for a few days and then he goes out for an injury again," he said.

"I don't want to put days or weeks on it because I think we just have to make sure he gets in the best possible shape and don't put any pressure on him."

'What are you talking about?' - Simon Jordan pinpoints Ange Postecoglou tactic that ruins Tottenham 'maturity' claim

Simon Jordan has criticised Ange Postecoglou for his approach at Tottenham.

The Spurs boss claimed his side 'lack some maturity and leadership' following their loss to Crystal Palace on Sunday.

His side are already back in action, though, as they host Manchester City in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night.

The competition presents a chance for Postecoglou to end Spurs' 17-year wait for a trophy.

However, talkSPORT co-host Jordan has questioned the Australian's comments ahead of the match.

Speaking on White & Jordan, he explained: "Comparing Manchester City with Tottenham is a silly comparison because Man City are winning things and Tottenham aren't.

"When you're talking about Man City's priorities, they've won the Premier League for the last four years, they've won the Champions League in the last two seasons, they've won the League Cup God knows how many times, they've won the FA Cup - Tottenham have won nothing for 17 years.

"So when we're talking about comparisons about what Pep Guardiola would do, he's under a different set of challenges to Tottenham. Now you go to what Ange has said, I don't know what he's bloody talking about.

"I really like him, I really want him to be successful. When he talks about not making enough effort in a game and he hates the fact that people are going to keep, what are you talking about, Ange?

"You put a weakened side out against Fulham in the League Cup last year and you lost.

"You put Son on the bench, you put Maddison on the bench, you put Kulusevski on the bench, you play the second string team for reasons that are your own and you are perfectly entitled to.

"That's not people accusing you of a lack of effort, that's people suggesting that you're applying a different protocol to that particular game.

"You could have gone to Fulham, you could have won that League Cup game and you could have progressed in the League Cup, however meaningless that might be to you."

Spurs were beaten on penalties in the second round by Fulham last season after a 1-1 draw at Craven Cottage.

Jordan continued: "So when Ange takes this brusque style, which in parts I like, because he wants to separate himself, I like the fact that he objected strongly to the notion that Tottenham fans wanted Tottenham to lose to Manchester City or beat Manchester City or whatever it was so that Arsenal couldn't win the league.

"They were more inclined to be worried about what Arsenal were doing than Spurs were doing.

"I like that and he was right to say that, he's a professional football manager, he couldn't give a monkeys what Arsenal were doing, he wants to win the games that are in front of him.

"But when he makes this particular observation, like he makes rod to his own back, he says things like I don't worry about set pieces, I've got more things to worry about than that.

"Then every time a set piece goes in and they can see the goal, the media are going to focus on the fact that he said that and hit him with that stick.

"Now he's going to talk about not making enough effort for games. and then you look at the line-up against Fulham last year and he's dropped his big hitters for that game.

"Now that's not a lack of effort for the guys that go in there, but Oliver Skipp and players of that nature don't occupy the same precedence as James Madison do they? Or Kulusevski or Son.

"So it's not about effort, it's about priorities. So I don't know what Ang is trying to deflect away from, do you want to win the League Cup?

“You're the one that said, not I'm going to win something, he's the one that said I normally win something in my second season, which we then interpreted to being... I always win something in my second season.

"So they might win the Europa League and they might win one of the cups. So here's one of the cups."
