Haringey residents are being invited to take a leap of faith at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

London Ambulance Charity is seeking brave volunteers for the 42-metre abseil from the top of the stadium.

Whether participants choose to descend backwards facing away from the stadium or take the ultimate thrill and face outwards as they travel down to the ground, those taking will support the work of life-saving paramedics at London Ambulance Service.

Rakesh Patel, chief finance officer at London Ambulance Service, has been a lifelong fan of Tottenham Hotspur. Encouraging people to sign up to the Big Stadium Abseil on 14th March, he said: “This is a really fun and exhilarating experience for those with enough daring to take on the challenge.

“All money raised for London Ambulance Charity will make a huge difference to us and the people of London – it will help fund life-saving defibrillators in the areas of the capital that need them most, and support our hard-working staff and volunteers.

“I have been a huge fan of the team for such a long time and I know this will give all those participating a great opportunity to see this amazing stadium from a whole new perspective. So, whether you’re a Spurs fan or not, we’d urge you to join us for the Big Stadium Abseil!”

The abseil is open to 100 participants and will involve climbing 100 steep steps before abseiling off the edge of the stadium. The money raised will support the ‘London Heart Starters’ campaign, which aims to raise funds for 200 additional defibrillators – a vital piece of life-saving equipment that can be used by members of the public should someone have a cardiac arrest – as well as support wellbeing initiatives for LAS staff and volunteers.

Dr Jessica Burgess, head of charity development for London Ambulance Charity, said: “The abseil is set to be a memorable event offering breath-taking views of the stadium.

“So if you are brave enough, sign up and join us for a thoroughly exciting adventure in our beautiful city.”

A total of 61 people were arrested during Premier League matchdays at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in 2023/24, second only to Stamford Bridge

Tottenham Hotspur Stadium has been named one of the most “dangerous” to watch a match in the Premier League after research revealed the number of arrests made in and around each venue last season.

Across the 19 home matches at Spurs in 2023/24, there were 61 arrests made, with an average pf 0.52 per 10,000 fans in attendance. In terms of total arrests, this puts the club second only to Chelsea, which recorded 75. In terms of arrests per 10,000 fans, Spurs rank fifth worst behind Man City, Southampton, Brentford and Chelsea.

The research by security firm Get Licensed used government data on arrests of both home and away fans, as these occurred at the stadium regardless of which team they were supporting.

Shahzad Ali, security expert and CEO of Get Licensed, has offered advice for football fans attending stadiums and said: “With the football season underway, thousands of fans across the country will be travelling to watch their team play both home and away. In most cases, fans will enjoy the game free from any trouble but sadly, a small minority do cause disorder which can result in violent and abusive behaviour towards other fans, police and stadium security officers.

“For any fans heading to football games over the course of the 2024/25 season, there are a number of steps you can take to remain as safe as possible. To begin with, try to arrive at the stadium as early as possible to avoid any last-minute crowds which at times, can result in frustration and disorder. Secondly, plan your route to the stadium in advance as public transport will often be busy and roads around the stadium will be closed to traffic.

“It’s also important to respect stadium staff, including security workers who are there to help keep you safe. More often than not, security workers can take the brunt of angry and frustrated fans so be sure to listen to any instructions they give out and if you feel like you are in trouble, reach out to them for advice.”

The 180-room hotel will be six storeys taller than when it was originally approved eight years ago, reports Grace Howarth, Local Democracy Reporter

Construction of Tottenham Hotspur’s major 29-storey hotel is scheduled to be completed by June 2028, the club has confirmed.

Spurs this week confirmed that work on the 180-room hotel had now begun, and says it hopes construction will be completed before the start of the UEFA European Football Championship, for which Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is a host venue.

The international football tournament is set to take place between 9th June and 9th July 2028.

Plans for the hotel, which also include 49 residential flats and 69 car parking spaces, were originally approved in 2016 at the same time as the stadium itself was approved. However, last year permission was granted to increase the height of the scheme from the original 23 storeys up to 29.

A Spurs spokesperson said: “Plans for the development of a new hotel at the south of the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium campus were resubmitted to Haringey Council to amend the layout and design of the building.

“This was, in part, to improve its appearance and create a more refined and slender design, as well as to comply with the latest building safety regulations.”

Thousands of jobs are set to be created on the hotel project and the club’s other major redevelopment schemes, in the vicinity of the stadium, which include hundreds of residential homes and student flats.

In an economic impact report produced by the football club and Ernst and Young in December 2023, the club said that in its “tri-borough area”, it expects to be supporting 4,300 full-time jobs by the 2026/27 season.

Although not able to confirm how many jobs would be created by the hotel project itself, the club states that “at least 20% of the FTE [full-time equivalent] jobs created by the hotel build will be for local people”.

Local concerns have been raised over the level of disruption in and around the stadium caused by the hotel’s construction, but the club has now said that no roads would be closed or disrupted as a consequence of the building work and that fans attending games would not be affected.

More than 50 different employers participating, writes Kinga Plata

Tottenham Hotspur Foundation (THF) and the Department of Work and Pensions are holding a job fair with over 50 different employers participating.

The event will take place at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Thursday 25th July from 10am to 3pm.

The organisers invite everyone who wishes to land a job or change their career path to register and meet all the participants.

THF says it will be a “great opportunity” to find jobs across a wide range of sectors including retail, marketing, hospitality, sales, customer service, admin, management and much more.

The foundation also urges anyone interested in coming in to bring their digital CV as each employer will come with live job and training vacancies.

Tottenham Hotspur, HSBC, Tesco, Metro will all have their stands at the stadium.

The event will be divided into two parts, from 10am to 12pm slot for those who require additional support, during which the number of people entering will be limited.

And the second slot, from 12pm to 3pm, for all other attendees, with the last entry at 2:30pm.
