FORMER Tottenham midfielder Dennis Bond has passed away at the age of 77.

Spurs led the tributes with a statement on social media that read: "We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of our former midfielder Dennis Bond at the age of 77.

"The thoughts of everyone at the Club are with Dennis’ friends and family at this impossibly sad time."

A boyhood Tottenham fan, Bond grew up in Walthamstow and kicked off his professional playing career with Watford.

He made his debut for the Hornets aged just 17 and went on to earn over 100 senior appearances before joining Spurs in 1967.

Over his three-year spell at White Hart Lane, Bond made 27 first team appearances, scoring once.

He then moved on to Charlton before ending his playing career in non-league.

The ex-midfielder officially hung up his boots at the age of 55 after featuring for Boreham Wood, Waltham Abbey and Potters Bar Town.

Fans took to social media to express their condolences, with one person writing: "Walthamstow lad. My thoughts with his family and friends."

Another said: "RIP Dennis."

A third wrote: "Very sad to hear this news."

While a fourth commented: "May he rest in peace."

We certainly need, if we are looking to catch the teams above us, to drastically improve everything we are delivering, still.

That goes right across the board at every department of the football club. We have so much to do to get to the top.

It's not going to happen just by thinking it. It's not going to happen by willing it. We have to actually deliver it.

That takes money, that takes investment, that takes smart thinking and strategic thinking, which I know is going on at the club, and then we need to implement it.

MANCHESTER CITY travel to Tottenham as they look to move back into the top four in the Premier League.

Pep Guardiola will be hoping to put the woes of defeat to his great rivals Liverpool behind him as City travel to the capital.

The Citizens are usually there or thereabouts when it comes to Premier League title races, but this season are nowhere to be found.

For the quality of Guardiola's side, they are having an "off season," but they are still in the hunt for Champions League qualification, only nine points behind Arsenal in second.

The Gunners will be hoping their north London rivals Tottenham can do them a favour and halt City from making any further ground on them.

While Ange Postecoglou's promise of delivering a trophy in his second season still bears fruit in the Europa League, their Premier League season has been one to forget.

The Lily Whites are way off where they want to be, closer to West Ham in 16th than Fulham in 10th.

However, Spurs weirdly almost always manage to pull off a result against City, with their 4-0 win over Guardiola's side in November being their only win in eight during that spell.

How to watch Tottenham vs Man City and is there a live stream?

ALL of the Premier League games between Tuesday, February 25 and Thursday, February 27 are LIVE in the UK.

Tottenham vs Man City will be live on TNT Sports 3.

The game will also be available for stream on Discovery+.

Former Chelsea and Tottenham star now living completely new life as a supply teacher

EVERY day is a school day for former left-back Clive Wilson now he works as a permanent supply teacher at Roding Valley High School in Loughton in Essex.

Manchester-born Wilson has been at Roding since 2019 — teaching year 11-16s.

The 63-year-old said: “I started to work in education in 2008.”

After retiring from football in 2000, the ex-defender worked for Le Coq Sportif and Ted Baker before going to university and getting a degree in sports science.

He revealed: “The odd thing was I fell into teaching by pure fluke.

“I was at a golf driving range one day and there was a lovely guy there who was a Fulham fan and recognised me as a former footballer and asked what I was doing.

“He talked to me about the possibility of teaching. He suggested I should pop to a couple of local schools and have a look at them with no pressure, purely just to see what I thought.

“I went along more as something to rule out really.

“However, it had the complete opposite effect and I really thought it would be the type of job that I would enjoy.

“I’m so grateful for his advice at the range. I haven’t looked back!

“The odd thing is I have two brothers and a sister and two of them are teachers, too.

“I used to be one of those people who would tease them about them having the best job with a quarter of the year off with holidays.

“Then I started teaching. Wow, was I mistaken! Believe me, you need that time.”

Growing up, Wilson always wanted to be a footballer but thought it had passed him by when he had not been spotted by the age of 14.

He left school at 16 and went to college to study electrical and electronic engineering with the intention of becoming an electrician.

But in the last year of college he was spotted playing at Hough End — Manchester’s equivalent to London’s Hackney Marshes.

He said: “Len Davies was a Manchester City scout in the days when people would scout the local talent.

“And it went from there. I am a case in point that it’s never too late to chase your dream.

“I joined at the time of Alex Williams, Andy May, Steve Kinsey, Tommy Caton — sadly no longer with us — and Steve Mackenzie, a 17-year-old Malcolm Allison signed from Crystal Palace, who went on to score one of the great FA Cup final goals.

“The club reached successive FA Youth Cup finals in 1979 and 1980.

“Sadly we lost them both to Millwall and Aston Villa. I played in the latter final.”

Wilson still remembers his City debut — a League Cup tie against Stoke in October 1981 at Maine Road.

He recalled: “I was excited at the thought of maybe getting a chance on the bench. Back then there was only one or two subs at the most.

“But when I saw manager John Bond had named me in the team, reality suddenly hit me knowing I then had to go out and do it. All of a sudden I was playing alongside players who I thought were on a different level. But it all went OK and we won 2-0.”

Clive spent eight years at Maine Road along with a small loan at Chester City for a season.

Then he took on a new challenge in 1987 when he headed south to Chelsea.

He said: “I liked the idea of playing for a club in London but then I had the biggest culture shock in terms of trying to find anywhere affordable to live!

“I realise it’s nearly 40 years ago but you could get a three-bedroom house in Sale for £35,000.

“In London I was lucky if I could buy a garage for that!

“The first season at Stamford Bridge wasn’t great after being relegated from the top flight.

“Not only that but we had the agony of losing a relegation play-off.

“They were those two seasons when teams from the top flight would go into two-legged semi-final and final play-off games against teams from the second tier.

“Sadly, we lost against Middlesbrough over two legs in the final.

“However, we bounced back the following season — scoring 99 league points from our 46 games.”

Wilson maintains his best playing years were under Gerry Francis at QPR between 1991 and 1994.

He said: “In reflection, I think so. We finished fifth in the first all-new Premier League campaign in 1992-93 followed by another top-half finish the following season.

“Then I think Gerry had a falling out with the club over the sale of Les Ferdinand and soon after he moved to Tottenham as manager.”

Wilson ended up reuniting with Francis at White Hart Lane in 1995.

He said: “Rangers boss Ray Wilkins wanted me to stay but, with no offence to QPR, I was 34 and I saw the switch to Spurs as possibly my last opportunity of playing at one of English football’s big clubs.

“Working again with Gerry made it familiar for me, too.”

He spent four years in North London but by the time he switched to Cambridge in 1999, he knew his football career was slowing down.

Wilson admitted: “I was 38 and was picking up niggly injuries.

“I was still undecided in that 1999-2000 season whether that would be my final year, but realised a few weeks after the end of the season that was it.

“I never did go into my last game with any fanfares about it being my finale. And it suited me that way.

“I loved my time as a player and I often get kids ask me why I am a teacher when I used to be a top-flight footballer. There is a concept that top-flight footballers have always been well paid.

“It was a different time in English football. But I would never complain about it.

“The game gave me a great grounding in my life. I am extremely proud of my 20-odd years in the game.”

This last week has been an opportunity for Wilson to take a well-earned break from the classroom for half-term.

He said: “It’s been a nice pause but I’ll enjoy going back in and mixing with children who, in the main, are a pleasure to teach and work with on a daily basis.”

Ipswich 1 Tottenham 4: Spurs make it three Premier League wins on the spin as Brennan Johnson scores twice

DJED SPENCE’S case for a possible England call-up is growing stronger by the week.

The versatile defender, 24, has been Spurs’ form player over their difficult, injury-ravaged last few months, handling Mo Salah brilliantly in the Carabao Cup in January.

It has led to talk of possible inclusion in Thomas Tuchel’s Three Lions squad.

And if the German was watching this performance, which saw Spence net his first Premier League goal to kill off Ipswich’s resistance, he may have found it quite persuasive.

Ange Postecoglou, who talked up Spence’s credentials on Friday, saw his side race into a 2-0 lead thanks to a Brennan Johnson double.

But given his team’s habit of chucking away leads, the fear was it would happen when Omari Hutchinson curled home before the break.

Yet in the end England hopeful Spence’s deflected effort ensured a third straight league victory for Spurs, before Dejan Kulusevski's stunner added some gloss to the scoreline.

Meanwhile Kieran McKenna’s Town are now five points adrift in the relegation zone after yet another home humbling.

It is now four straight home defeats for the Tractor Boys with 14 goals shipped in the process, leaving their survival prospects looking bleak.

Tottenham… or Spurs, or Tottenham Hotspur, whatever the club wishes to be called… can be a curious team under Postecoglou.

They seem to live in ‘moments’ - modern-day football-speak for spells in games - more than most sides.

And those moments can shift dramatically from exhilarating ones to desperate ones and back again in any game, against any opposition.

They survived a bad one in the opening six minutes as Ipswich livewire striker Liam Delap ripped them apart.

Delap raced clear and had a shot well-saved by Guglielmo Vicario inside the first 30 seconds.

Jaden Philogene’s rebound strike would have gone in had it not hit an offside Hutchinson near the line.

Delap then breezed past Archie Gray, restored to the heart of Spurs’ backline in Ben Davies’ absence, and prodded a shot just wide of the far post.

Spurs’ scare from the ex-Manchester City man continued when he flicked Kalvin Phillips’ free-kick onto the post before it was hacked away.

But then came a moment of devastating brilliance from Postecoglou’s side.

Gray, deployed at right centre-back with Kevin Danso switched to the left, lofted an inch-perfect ball over the top to Son Heung-min.

The South Korean still had plenty to do and proceeded to fool Ben Godfrey with a clever step-over, before fizzing the ball across the six-yard area for Johnson to convert.

Johnson and Son’s double act was repeated on 26 minutes as Rodrigo Bentancur sent the latter clear down the left.

Son cut in and was afforded an age to pick out Wales star Johnson, back in the starting line-up for the first time since January’s win at Tamworth due to a calf issue, to slot home.

In between the two clinical strikes, Danso had pulled off an audacious Cruyff-turn to get himself out of trouble when last man, to the delight of the travelling fans.

The home supporters, meanwhile, had gone quiet, but their enthusiasm was reignited when their side grabbed one back out of nothing - and in style.

Phillips played the ball out to former Spurs kid Jack Clarke, whose first-time ball was met with a beautiful, first-time strike from Hutchinson that found the corner.

Luke Woolfenden, on for Godfrey at half-time, thought he had levelled around the hour mark but he had wandered offside when heading in from close range.

Former Norwich man James Maddison was booed every time he touched the ball but it was his dancing feet which teed up Spence to find the net via Woolfenden’s hefty deflection.

If the game was not up then, it certainly was seven minutes later when Kulusevski curled in off the post before roaring in relieved celebration.

MATHYS TEL has revealed his farming pastime — as Tottenham prepare to take on the Tractor Boys.

The 19-year-old, signed on loan from Bayern Munich for the rest of the season, was born in Paris but his family hails from Guadeloupe.

Tel goes over to the French colony in the Caribbean every year to see them.

And the striker — whose side face Ipswich at Portman Road on Saturday — is happy to get his hands dirty helping his grandpa out with growing fruit and vegetables.

The France Under-21 star said: “That’s my country. My parents and my sister come from there. I was born in a small part of Paris.

“Every year I go — one week, two weeks — but I need to go there, for myself, for my confidence.

“Just to see my father happy, my little cousin happy, it brings me a lot of energy.

“I help out my grandfather with agriculture.

“I take some gloves and big shoes, so that’s good!

“It doesn’t matter where I play my football, you have to be humble. That’s why I go to Guadeloupe to see my family whenever I can."

Tel ended up being one of the most exciting transfers of the January window.

He completed a deadline-day loan move from Bayern to Spurs, who hold a £45million option to sign him permanently.

Given Spurs' horror injury crisis since November - Tel was thrown straight into the deep end in North London.

Despite being a Tottenham player for only 21 days, the teen has already played three times.

He was subbed on during the club's 4-0 Carabao Cup second leg defeat at Anfield and started in their 2-1 FA Cup exit to Aston Villa.

The forward was then handed a full Prem debut in Tottenham's 1-0 win over Manchester United on Sunday.

Tottenham Hotspur say they no longer want to be called 'Tottenham' in email to broadcasters

TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR have sensationally asked broadcasters not to refer to them as "Tottenham".

For decades, broadcasters of the north Londoners' matches have referred to the club as "Tottenham".

But in an email to TV rights holders around the world, Spurs have asked to be referred to by their full name.

Broadcasters received the email, details of which have been made public by The Athletic, on February 10.

The communication was titled: "Tottenham Hotspur Naming Update."

An excerpt of it read: "Tottenham Hotspur have provided clarification regarding the club’s name.

"They have requested that the club are primarily known as Tottenham Hotspur, with Spurs being the preferred short version.

"The club have requested that they are not referred to as Tottenham.”

Not being referred to as "Tottenham" has actually been the club's stance since 2011.

And they felt it necessary to remind broadcasters of it following a refresh of their brand guidelines after Christmas.

Spurs seemingly don't want to be referred to as "Tottenham", the area of London in which they reside, in order to increase the global presence of the Tottenham Hotspur brand.

Broadcasters have started heeding the club's request, with Sky Sports describing Ange Postecoglou as the "Tottenham Hotspur Head Coach" during their coverage of Spurs' 1-0 win over Manchester United last weekend.

Additionally, when the team's starting XI was displayed on the screen it said "Spurs" at the top.

Supercomputer reveals Europa League winners with heartbreak for Tottenham in the final and more misery for Man Utd

A SUPERCOMPUTER has predicted the outcome of the Europa League - and it doesn't look good for Manchester United.

The Red Devils have endured a miserable season so far.

They currently sit 15th in the Premier League table with just 29 points from 25 games.

And their hopes of a trophy are now pinned on the FA Cup and the Europa League.

Ruben Amorim and Co have been handed a difficult last-16 draw in Europe's second-tier competition.

United will face La Liga side Real Sociedad for a place in the quarter-finals.

However, a supercomputer from Slingo predicts they will suffer a 5-3 defeat on aggregate.

The algorithm - which has given Man Utd an 11 per cent chance of winning the competition - suggests Amorim's side will lose 3-2 away from home and 2-1 at Old Trafford.

Meanwhile, Tottenham are predicted to win their last-16 meeting with AZ Alkmaar 2-0 on aggregate.

Spurs are then tipped to face Eintracht Frankfurt in the quarter-finals.

CASINO SPECIAL - BEST CASINO BONUSES FROM £10 DEPOSITS

The supercomputer has predicted a thrilling affair between the two teams, with Spurs ultimately winning 5-4 after two legs.

Ange Postecoglou and Co are then expected to face Lazio in the semi-finals.

Should that be the case, they are predicted to win 3-2 on aggregate to secure a spot in the final.

However, that is where the Europa League journey will come to an unfortunate end for Spurs.

According to the supercomputer, Tottenham will lose 2-1 to Athletic Bilbao in the Spain final.

It would mean Bilbao would win the title in their own city - at San Mames Stadium.

The teams expected to miss out on the final are Lazio and Real Sociedad.

Lyon, Fenerbahce, Olympiacos, Rangers, Roma, Bodo/Glimt, Viktoria Plzen and FCSB are also set to fall short of Europa League glory.

Man Utd, Tottenham and Chelsea learn who they could face as Europa League and Conference League last-16s are confirmed

Submitted by daniel on

Description

MANCHESTER UNITED, Tottenham and Chelsea are all closer to knowing who they will face in the next round of their respective European competitions.

The Premier League trio all booked their spots in the last 16 of either the Europa League or the Conference League thanks to their efforts in the new fangled league phase.

Man Utd and Spurs both finished in the top eight of the Europa League league phase and, as a result, bypassed the need to participate in a play-off round to reach the last 16 proper.

Instead they have been awaiting their opponents in the next round, with one of the winners from the play-offs set to face off against each side.

Thanks to United and Spurs finishing alongside each other - third and fourth respectively - they will be seeded on opposite sides of Friday's draw.

That means they have known for some time now that they would each take on one of Real Sociedad, Galatasaray, AZ Alkmaar or Midtjylland.

And following the conclusion the play-off round, those four potential opponents have been narrowed down to just two - AZ Alkmaar and Real Sociedad.

Dutch side AZ Alkmaar thrashed Galatasaray 6-3 on aggregate to book their spot in the last 16, while Real Sociedad were pushed hard over two legs against Midtjyland but ultimately ran away with it 7-3.

That means that Spurs and United will each be drawn against one of Sociedad and Alkmaar.

For example, if Spurs draw Sociedad then United will take on AZ Alkmaar. The Prem rivals CANNOT play each other.

CASINO SPECIAL - BEST CASINO BONUSES FROM £10 DEPOSITS

And as a result of finishing third and fourth, Man Utd and Spurs will not meet in this year's competition unless both teams reach the final.

Tottenham have already gotten the better of AZ Alkmaar once this season, beating them 1-0 during the league phase of the competition.

A second half penalty from Richarlison proved to be the difference between the two sides back in October as Alkmaar had a man sent off in the late stages.

Rangers, meanwhile, will face either Bodo/Glimt or Jose Mourinho's Fenerbahce.

Whichever team is not drawn against Rangers will take on Olympiacos.

The draw to find out who faces who will take place in Switzerland on Friday.

That's where Chelsea will also learn their fate too, as they await their last 16 opponents after topping the Conference League table with a flawless league phase campaign.

FC Copenhagen's 4-3 aggregate win over Heidenheim and Real Betis' two-legged victory over Gent, means it'll be one of Betis or Copenhagen who face the tough task of taking on the Londoners in the next round.

Whoever isn't drawn to face Chelsea will take on Portuguese side Vitoria de Guimaraes.

A tie with Betis would mean Chelsea would have to deal with in-form Antony, who sealed a loan to the La Liga club in January and has been scoring for fun since.

As the seeded teams, Chelsea, Man Utd and Spurs will contest the away leg of their round of 16 tie on March 6, with the reverse fixtures in England scheduled for March 13.
