Tottenham Hotspur star Lucas Bergvall is in line for a significant boost as a jam-packed fixture schedule at Hotspur Way and his performance in the Carabao Cup win over Coventry City have resulted in boss Ange Postecoglou being poised to hand him further game time over the next 10 days, GIVEMESPORT sources have revealed.

Having come from behind to defeat Championship opposition, thanks to Brennan Johnson grabbing a stoppage time winner after Djed Spence claimed his first Spurs goal in nine outings, the north Londoners have quickly turned their attentions towards making preparations for a Premier League clash against Brentford on Saturday.

Postecoglou handed Bergvall his full debut as Tottenham overcame Coventry to book their place in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday, after being limited to just 31 minutes of top flight action since his summer arrival, and the Sweden international is primed for more opportunities to impress.

Bergvall Prepared for Reward After First Start

Teenager on course for more game time in upcoming fixtures

Bergvall is set to build on his first start in a Tottenham shirt by being rewarded with more game time over the course of the next 10 days, according to GMS sources, when there will be a Europa League clash against Qarabag sandwiched between Premier League encounters with Brentford and Manchester United.

Although Spurs struggled to overcome Coventry in midweek, the creative midfielder was among the capital club's better performers and Postecoglou's decision to substitute him soon after the hour mark resulted in some sections of the travelling fanbase showing their frustration.

GMS sources have been informed that backroom staff are impressed with how Bergvall has adjusted to life in his new surroundings and, despite facing stiff competition from the likes of playmaker James Maddison for a regular starting berth, he is on course for a significant boost in the form of more chances to make an impact.

The 18-year-old joined the north Londoners in a deal worth close to £9million during the summer, having already agreed to make the switch from Djurgardens following his choice to snub the opportunity to join La Liga heavyweights Barcelona a matter of days after the winter window slammed shut earlier this year.

Bergvall is desperate for his decision to pay off, and GMS sources have learned that the upcoming fixtures against Brentford, Qarabag and Manchester United will present him with further chances to make a case for becoming a more significant figure in Postecoglou's plans for the remainder of the campaign.

GIVEMESPORT Key Statistic: Lucas Bergvall became the 20th youngest player to make his Premier League debut for Tottenham Hotspur when he came off the bench at the age of 18 years, six months and 17 days against Leicester City on the opening day of the season

Postecoglou Poised to Put Trust in Bergvall

Greek-Australian tactician has been looking to ease midfielder in

GMS sources have been told that Postecoglou has been eager to ease Bergvall into his Tottenham side, resulting in the Carabao Cup being seen as the ideal platform, but the Greek-Australian tactician is preparing to trust his summer recruit on a more regular basis thanks to putting in a promising performance against Coventry.

The teenager, who penned a £15,000-per-week contract tying him down to Spurs until the summer of 2029 when he completed his switch from Djurgardens, will also be eyeing the Europa League as a chance to make his mark as numerous changes are expected to be made to the starting line-up in the competition.

Although Bergvall is readying himself for further involvement in the upcoming fixtures, GMS sources understand that Tottenham have been determined to use him carefully as he continues adjusting to life in England and getting up to speed with the rigours of the Premier League instead of throwing him in at the deep end.

GMS sources recently revealed that the former Brommapojkarna man has been looking to use September as a springboard for his Lilywhites career, having been forced to remain patient during the early stages of the campaign, and it is on the cards for his wish to be granted by Postecoglou.

Sergio Reguilon was a surprise inclusion on Tottenham Hotspur's bench vs Coventry City on Wednesday evening, as the side from the capital won 2-1 in the last minute against their Midlands counterparts - but that could be a rare sighting of the Spaniard, as GIVEMESPORT sources have stated that there is little chance of him staying on at the club beyond his contract running out in summer.

Reguilon appeared on the bench in the League Cup, with hopse of making his first appearance for Tottenham in over two years. But with the Lilywhites going 1-0 down to Coventry in a shock opener, more attacking recruits were brought out to source an equaliser and winner, which they did in the nick of time - and Reguilon was left stranded.

Reguilon Needs To Find a Permanent Move

The Spanish defender needs a proper home

Reguilon was one of the brightest young prospects in Spain when he burst through Real Madrid's academy, but despite a quality loan spell at Sevilla and his subsequent move to Tottenham, it has all gone downhill from there for the Madrid-born defender.

Whether he can get back to his best remains to be seen, but with others ahead of him in the pecking order, it could be a tough ask if he is to get his career back on track after a fleet of loan spells over the past two years.

Sources: Reguilon Still Unlikely to Have Tottenham Future

The full-back made the bench but he is set to depart in June

GIVEMESPORT sources state that whilst Reguilon was a surprise inclusion for Ange Postecoglou's side against the Sky Blues, he still has a long way to go before he is remotely close to becoming a serious part of the first-team setup.

Reguilon has not made a single appearance for Tottenham over the past two seasons, instead venturing on loan spells to Atletico Madrid, Manchester United and Brentford - but they have all been largely unsuccessful with just 40 games in two years.

GIVEMESPORT Key Statistic: Reguilon played 22 games for Real Madrid before departing.

He has been training with the first-team squad in north London, but Postecoglou's decision not to bring him on - even when first-choice left-back Destiny Udogie was replaced - means it could be a long road back for the Spaniard.

Tottenham must include Reguilon in their squad if they are to start reintegrating him into first-team matters, but the likelihood remains that he has no serious future at Tottenham. With less than a year left on his contract, it is extremely likely that Reguilon will depart in 2025.

Ange Postecoglou Could be Underutilising Reguilon

His experience makes him a solid addition to the team

Reguilon was a semi-expensive outlay for Tottenham having impressed on loan at La Liga outfit Sevilla the season prior - and he started his north London career superbly, winning against Chelsea on penalties on his debut before his Premier League debut oversaw a 6-1 win against Manchester United.

However, frequent managerial changes meant changes in strategies, and Reguilon constantly found himself in limbo due to more defensive-minded coaches coming into the club - and that has put his career on hold for the time being.

Over 75 Premier League appearances has seen him somewhat make a statement in English football, as has over 60 La Liga outings and six Spain caps, alongside the Europa League with Sevilla back in 2019-20. There is a player in there somewhere, and whilst that may not be at Tottenham, Reguilon would represent a strong pickup from most teams in one of Europe's top five divisions.

Ange Must Drop 2/10 Disappointment After "Diabolical" Spurs Display vs Coventry

Key Takeaways

Tottenham narrowly beat Coventry last night in the EFL Cup, in what was a poor performance from the Lillywhites.

Timo Werner produced a dismal display, losing possession 14 times.

The German was given a 2/10 and should now be dropped for the foreseaable future.

Having invested heavily in the summer, and being blessed with the promise of second season success under Ange Postecoglou, Tottenham would've been hoping to push on this campaign and build on the Aussie's debut season at the club. However, the Lillywhites haven't exactly hit the ground running so far, and a few miserable performances last night, notably the display from Timo Werner, were close to jeapordising their season all together.

Indeed, Spurs have suffered a largely uninspiring beginning to the new campaign. A disappointing draw away at Leicester in their opening fixture was compounded by defeats to Newcastle and rivals Arsenal, and last night's League Cup tie against Coventry City almost ended disastrously.

With the need to bring in silverware exacerbated by a well documented 16-year trophy draught, Postecoglou will likely place significant emphasis on the cup competitions as an opportunity to put an end to this bleak record. Thus, getting past Coventry in the third round yesterday was of paramount importance, and whilst the former Celtic boss' side eventually managed to do so, it was far from plain sailing.

The north Londoners fell behind to a nicely worked goal from Brandon Thomas-Asante mid-way through the first half. The away team were on the verge of being dumped out of the competition at this early stage, before two late strikes from Djed Spence and Brennan Johnson saved them from embarrassment.

Despite progressing to the next round, it's fair to say one man struggled on the day and the stats don't make for pretty reading either. Werner, given his first start of the new season, put in a forgettable performance in the West Midlands.

Werner Lets Postecoglou Down vs Coventry

He lost the ball 14 times

Having played an intense North London derby on the weekend, and with a difficult game against Brentford to come on Saturday, Postecoglou may have felt a League Cup tie at Coventry would provide ample opportunity to rotate and rest some of his pivotal players. However, the Australian manager ultimately had to call upon the likes of James Maddison and Son Heung-min to change the game late on, and was criticised for selecting the likes of Werner and Forster from the start.

In Werner's case, drawing on the German to deliver certainly warranted criticism, as the ex-Chelsea forward produced a very below-par display. With a 6.5 SofaScore rating, he was the joint-worst performing Spurs player who started, alongside Wilson Odobert, who was substituted after 18 minutes after sustaining an injury.

Hooked with 16 minutes to go, Werner struggled to impact the game in a positive way. Failing to register a shot, the 28-year-old completed none of his three attempted dribbles, none of his three attempted crosses and lost possession more times than any other Spurs player, with 14 turnovers.

Standing out like a sore thumb was certainly impressive given how poor Tottenham were generally as a team, with former player Jamie Redknapp describing Postecoglou's side's performance as 'diabolical'. Given how non-existent Werner was, it's no surprise the maligned manager opted to replace him with Dejan Kulusevski as Spurs chased an equaliser.

Postecoglou can't afford to use the winger

Such was the appalling nature of Werner's outing at the Coventry Building Society Arena, that journalist Alasdair Gold gave the winger a two out of ten in his player ratings for the encounter. After admitting that the loanee did make a good sliding block in his own box in the first half, the Football.London reporter wrote:

"Going forward though he was dreadful and offered nothing. He went off injured in the second half and had Spurs played on with 10 men his absence probably wouldn't have been noticed."

These damning words are an indictment of just how bad Werner was. Clearly not flavour of the month in Postecoglou's eyes anyway, given he's yet to start a league game this season, the 59-year-old may even have to refrain from picking the player in this competition.

While granting fringe players opportunities in the EFL Cup makes sense on paper, the stakes for Spurs are too high in these matches as they look to end their silverware drought, and Postecoglou has to rely on those who are more likely to deliver consistently. This means Werner's minutes probably ought to be limited this season, and means the club won't be in a rush to trigger the £8.5 million buy option clause included in the deal with RB Leipzig.

Ange Postecoglou's Future at Tottenham is 'Game to Game'

Tottenham Hotspur boss Ange Postecoglou is facing ‘testing times’ after a challenging start to the season, with the initial positive spirit that marked the Greek-Australian tactician’s early days at the club now seemingly diminished, according to Daily Mirror journalist John Cross.

Postecoglou acknowledged that “there is no quick fix” for his struggling side after Spurs secured a dramatic victory over Championship side Coventry City in the Carabao Cup third round, courtesy of Brennan Johnson’s stoppage-time winner.

The north London giants struggled for large periods of the game and went behind after Brandon Thomas-Asante’s opener in the 63rd minute, before goals from Djed Spence and Johnson completed the turnaround.

The victory ended Tottenham's two-game losing streak, following back-to-back defeats against Newcastle United and Arsenal in the Premier League.

Spurs Atmosphere ‘Feels Flat’

North Londoners have endured difficult start to season

Daily Mirror reporter Cross, speaking on the Sky Sports Back Pages podcast, highlighted that another loss, particularly in their upcoming Premier League clash against Brentford, could further deepen the unease surrounding Tottenham and Postecoglou:

“I do think that Spurs fans, who loved him last season, and loved the style of football, gave him a wonderful start. They tailed off badly.

“I do think it's testing times, because the biggest thing about that was the positive energy that the fans had. They really appreciated Postecoglou. They loved singing the songs.

“At the moment, it just feels quite flat. They were three minutes away from going out at Coventry, which would have been a devastating result.

“I don't think that he would have immediately been sacked or anything like that, but I tell you what, they've got Brentford at home on Saturday. If they'd had that upset, it feels like you are going game to game a little bit.”

With four points taken from their first four games, Tottenham currently sit 13th in the Premier League. A win, a draw, and two defeats are not the start the former Celtic chief would have hoped for, especially after a promising fifth-placed finish in his debut season at the club.

Following a painful 1-0 north London derby defeat to arch-rivals Arsenal, Postecoglou admitted his side is "progressing in many areas", despite enduring the club's worst start to a Premier League campaign in nine years.

With Brentford at home next, Spurs have a significant opportunity to bounce back with a positive performance, before facing tough upcoming fixtures in the Premier League, with trips to Manchester United and Brighton & Hove Albion to follow.

Premier League Trio ‘Battle’ for Angel Gomes

Tottenham, Man United and Newcastle all in the race

Tottenham, Newcastle, and Manchester United are among the Premier League sides battling for Lille star midfielder Angel Gomes, whose contract expires in less than 12 months, GIVEMESPORT sources have revealed.

The Premier League trio are interested in offering the 24-year-old a route back to England, four years after he left Manchester United on a free transfer to take his talents to France.

Gomes’ impressive 2023/24 season in Ligue 1 saw him register eight assists in 31 appearances for Lille.

Postecoglou Criticised For Playing Tottenham Duo vs Coventry

Description

Tottenham Hotspur boss Ange Postecoglou has been heavily criticised by The Athletic reporter Jack Pitt-Brooke for his team selection in Spurs' late 2-1 win over Coventry City in the League Cup on Wednesday - stating that it was one of the worst performances under the Aussie boss, before questioning why he would play Fraser Forster and Timo Werner as a stoppage-time winner spared their blushes.

Tottenham started slowly and hadn't even registered a shot on target until Coventry took the lead through Brandon Thomas-Asante just after the half-hour mark to send the Championship side into ecstasy. But an equaliser from Djed Spence in the dying embers set up a grand stand finish, and when Brennan Johnson turned home just moments later, Spurs fans were all of a sudden in raptures for a game that they didn't really deserve to win. But that didn't stop Pitt-Brooke from criticising the team where appropriate - notably the inclusions of Foster and Werner, who failed to impress.

Werner and Forster Criticised vs Coventry

The fringe duo weren't up to scratch on Wednesday

Writing on X (formerly Twitter), Pitt-Brooke stated that what he saw in Coventry was one of the worst performances that he'd witnessed in the past 13 months, whilst he showered Dejan Kulusevski with praise for his performance.

And that led to him questioning the inclusion of Forster and Werner, who are presumed to be on a combined £240,000-per-week - with Spurs evidently needing wins under their belt. He said:

"That was one of the worst performances I've ever seen from Postecoglou's Spurs. Directionless first half, abysmal second half. But they scored twice at the end and they're in the hat for the fourth round of the Carabao Cup!

"I never thought he should have played such a weak team, and the fact that they needed Kulusevski to dig them out of the hole points to that too. I get why he wanted to play Gray and Bergvall. Spence did well when he came on. Can't see any point in playing Forster or Werner though."

Tottenham Need to Start Their First Team for Trophies

A confidence boost would do Tottenham wonders at present

With the likes of Destiny Udogie, Papa Matar Sarr, Rodrigo Bentancur and Dominic Solanke all playing from the usual starting XI, it was a hugely disappointing performance for Spurs as they looked set to crash out in the West Midlands.

GIVEMESPORT Key Statistic: Ange Postecoglou has managed 46 games for Tottenham, winning 23 of those.

They've not been in the best of form in the Premier League, and with just four points from four games, there is a small bit of pressure on Postecoglou to deliver results sooner rather than later as the club languish in the bottom half of the table.

The fact that Son Heung-min, Dejan Kulusevski and Coventry-born James Maddison were all introduced could show just how much Postecoglou wants to win a trophy, having all but promised to do so in his second year at the club following Tottenham's 1-0 loss to local rivals Arsenal over the weekend.

They're into the round of 16, meaning that they only have to win four more games to taste their first major honour for almost two decades - and if that does become a formality, it will at least give the club the foundation to go on and push for other titles as they would finally end the dark cloud that looms above them in their long wait for silverware.

Ange Postecoglou 'Ignored' Tottenham Star v Coventry

Submitted by daniel on

Description

Tottenham Hotspur narrowly defeated Coventry City in the Carabao Cup thanks to two late goals, and Football London writer Rob Guest was shocked to see Ange Postecoglou ignore Mikey Moore on the night.

Brennan Johnson and Djed Spence struck late on after a disappointing display throughout, saving the blushes of the Premier League side. The north London outfit failed to produce a shot in the opening 45 minutes, while Coventry found the opening goal in the 63rd minute.

The Australian manager fielded a strong bench just in case things went wrong, with young Moore surrounded by senior players. Postecoglou might have hoped to have given the 17-year-old a run-out had the game run a little smoother.

Postecoglou 'Ignored' Mikey Moore

The game was 'made for Moore'

In the second half, James Maddison, Heung-min Son, and Dejan Kulusevski were brought on after Spurs struggled to produce in the final third. As the half went on, young Moore continued to look on, and journalist Guest has questioned the decision from Postecoglou, suggesting he ignored the academy graduate...

"Even after those attacking changes, Spurs still found it extremely difficult to make things happen until Kulusevski called Wilson into action in the 80th minute. One player who could only watch on from the sidelines as Tottenham laboured was teenager Mikey Moore. At a time when Spurs needed a spark in the final third and someone to try something different, the 17-year-old, who has proved in his game time with the first team that he has no fear and he is a very special talent, was glued to the bench as the team had already made all their changes. The game was made for Moore but Postecoglou instead opted to ignore him."

Moore is yet to feature for Tottenham in the Premier League, so he might not be playing as much as he would have hoped. A loan move may have been more beneficial for the youngster, but Postecoglou and his team have opted to keep him around the senior squad for now.

Tottenham Have Concerns About James Maddison

They were worried about his England omission

According to a report from the Daily Mail, Tottenham have been concerned about James Maddison and whether missing out on the England squad at Euro 2024 would impact his form at Spurs. The former Leicester City man struggled in the second half of last season, but he's shown signs of improvement this campaign.

The report states that despite Maddison not hitting the heights expected of him since the season got under way, there is a determination from the England international to use the disappointment of missing out on Euro 2024 to fuel him. Gareth Southgate is no longer England manager, so it's a chance for a fresh start.

What Postecoglou Has Told Tottenham Players After Bad Start

Description

Ange Postecoglou is not under any pressure from the board at Tottenham Hotspur after recent bad results and has told his players to remain calm and keep playing 'Angeball', according to the Daily Mail.

The Lilywhite have had a mixed start to their Premier League campaign this season with a draw against newly-promoted Leicester, a thumping win over Everton before defeats against Newcastle United and fierce rivals Arsenal in the North London derby most recently.

Those results have left Spurs reeling in 13th place in the table, despite spending over £200million on new players to bolster the Australian's squad in the summer transfer window.

Postecoglou Job at Spurs Safe

Ange wants his players to continue playing 'Angeball'

Postecoglou made a commitment to make big changes to his squad during the summer window and brought in Archie Gray, Lucas Bergvall, Wilson Odobert and Dominic Solanke into the first-team in N17 as he looks to improve on their fifth-placed finish in the Premier League last season.

Several other players left the club including Emerson Royal, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Joe Rodon, with Postecoglou keen to build the squad more in his image in order to play his style of play. That style has received plenty of criticism because of the amount of goals conceded, but according to the Daily Mail he is refusing to relent on his demands to play a certain way.

The report claims that the manager's message to his players in recent days since the defeat to Arsenal echoes that 'Angeball' remains at the heart of the operation and he will not switch to a different style of football to change their fortunes.

Postecoglou is "steadfastly loyal to his footballing principles", and as such he has reiterated to his squad that they remain on the right path, that they must stay calm and that nothing is going to change, especially with the board still fully supporting him.

Tottenham Have Private Concerns Over Maddison

Playmaker was left out of England squad for Euro 2024

One of the perennial underperformers in recent months has been playmaker James Maddison, who has struggled to find the same influence he had at the start of last season since returning from an ankle injury last year.

His form in the second half of last season ultimately saw him miss out on a place in the England squad for Euro 2024, and according to the Daily Mail Spurs had private concerns that it could have a negative effect on the former Leicester City star's mentality coming into the new season.

However, Maddison has since turned that rejection into motivation and he is adamant he will force his way back into the England setup by playing well for Tottenham and he remains a key player in Postecoglou's system despite his recent struggles.

Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United are among the Premier League sides battling to win the race for Angel Gomes after turning their attentions towards potentially landing the Lille star as a free agent at the end of the campaign, GIVEMESPORT sources have revealed.

Although the Magpies were fearful of breaching profit and sustainability rules during the summer transfer window, resulting in them being forced to sanction the exits of Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh for a combined fee of £65million, head coach Eddie Howe has wasted no time in making plans to bolster his St James' Park squad in the coming months.

Tottenham and Manchester United were also busy improving their options ahead of last month's deadline, with the latter spending more than £180million on reinforcements in the aftermath of winning the FA Cup last season, and they have joined Newcastle in eyeing a move for Gomes.

Magpies Pinpointed as Outsiders for Gomes

Tyneside giants are facing stiff competition for England international

Newcastle are considered outsiders in the tug-of-war to secure Gomes' services in 2025, according to GMS sources, but they are still showing interest and are not prepared to rule themselves out of the running for his signature even though they are facing stiff competition from domestic rivals.

The midfielder has already enjoyed a dream start to the season thanks to being rewarded with his first two England caps and making six appearances for Lille, but he was guilty of being sent off in the first half of the Ligue 1 outfit's Champions League opener against Portuguese heavyweights Sporting earlier this week.

GMS sources have been informed that Tottenham and Liverpool are also among the sides seriously considering offering Gomes a route back to his homeland for the next chapter of his career, while Manchester United have a small level of interest in luring him into a return to Old Trafford after he came through their ranks.

The 24-year-old has entered the final 10 months of his Lille deal, which allows him to pocket less than £12,000-per-week at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy, meaning that he is currently on course to be in a position to negotiate a pre-contract agreement with clubs outside France when the transfer window reopens in January.

Manchester United are mulling over handing Gomes a chance to return to familiar surroundings as he would count towards their homegrown quota, GMS sources have learned, and boss Erik ten Hag has tasked the scouting department with continuing to keep tabs on whether he can adjust to their style of play.

GIVEMESPORT Key Statistic: Angel Gomes made five Premier League appearances for Manchester United between May 2017 and January 2020

Gomes Will Seek Considerable Pay Increase

Midfielder poised to take advantage of widespread interest

GMS sources have been told that Gomes will be looking to secure a hefty pay rise if he leaves Lille as a free agent and may demand in the region of £150,000-per-week when his suitors head to the negotiating table as he will look to use the widespread interest from Premier League sides to his advantage.

The former Boavista man, who made 10 senior appearances for Manchester United during the early stages of his career, is aware that he will have an opportunity to get his hands on a more lucrative pay package in the event of his admirers not being forced to part with a transfer fee in the coming months.

Newcastle could find it difficult to compete with Gomes' other suitors due to Liverpool currently being in the Champions League, while Manchester United and Tottenham are competing in the Europa League, and GMS sources understand that the terms he is pushing for may be out of the Tyneside giants' reach.

GMS recently reported that the livewire was among the likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Jack Grealish, Anthony Gordon and Rico Lewis in profiting from Lee Carsley being put in interim charge of England during the international break earlier this month, and he is poised to be the subject of numerous contract proposals as he nears the Lille exit door.

Tottenham Have Private Concerns About James Maddison

Submitted by daniel on

Description

James Maddison is thought to have provided some encouraging signs towards Tottenham Hotspur's staff that he can get back to form in the Premier League - by using his England snub over the summer as fuel to return to the peak of his powers.

Maddison - reported to be on £170,000-per-week - was instrumental in Tottenham's push for the Champions League last season, and although the north London club finished fifth in the top-flight, it was a solid start under Ange Postecoglou that saw them record a solid first campaign under the Australian boss to kick on this season. That hasn't happened, and there were doubts that Maddison's snub by Gareth Southgate for EURO 2024 could have a negative impact on him. But according to reports, the Coventry-born star is using his rejection as 'fuel' to kick on this season and Tottenham coaches are already seeing a player reborn come to the fore.

Tottenham 'Had Concerns' Over Maddison This Summer

The star didn't make England's EURO 2024 squad which raised fears

The report from the Daily Mail states that Maddison has provided encouraging signs throughout games that he is edging closer to a return form - despite Tottenham having their concerns earlier in the campaign.

The report continues to state that there was concern amongst Tottenham chiefs as to how Maddison would return to training after being left out of England's EURO 2024 squad after a disappointing second half of the season in north London.

And, whilst Maddison's performances haven't yet hit expectations that were placed upon him after his move from Leicester City last summer, there is a determination on his behalf to use the disappointment of his England exile as 'fuel' for the coming season, with Southgate now out of the Wembley door.

That report continues that this attitude suits Postecoglou down to the ground, and if the Australian can keep his job after a poor start to the season, him and Maddison could work well in tandem together going forward.

Maddison Has The Quality to Shine For Tottenham

The midfielder is one of the best in the league when he hits top form

Maddison clearly has quality. The former Leicester man was on fire for Norwich City in the Championship, and his move to the Premier League was highly anticipated after 14 goals at Championship level with the Canaries.

GIVEMESPORT Key Statistic: Maddison has made seven caps for England but has yet to score for the Three Lions

Seven England caps isn't quite the tally he would have liked after bursting onto the Premier League scene, but Maddison clearly has talent and with almost 200 top-flight appearances to his name, he's evidently shown he can do it at this level.

The Tottenham star can be considered unfortunate that there is talent such as Jude Bellingham, Phil Foden and Cole Palmer who can all play in the hole for the Three Lions; but if he can use his determination and willingness to fight his way back into the squad by matching their output, that can only be a positive for Postecoglou as his side aim to jumpstart their poor start to Premier League proceedings.

Ornstein Shares How Tottenham's Board Feel About Postecoglou

Submitted by daniel on

Description

David Ornstein has stated that Tottenham Hotspur boss Ange Postecoglou will keep his job in north London despite the derby day defeat to Arsenal on Sunday - claiming that the club will likely be fully behind the former Celtic boss to rebuild the club in the same way that Mikel Arteta did for the Gunners.

Gabriel's header in the second half proved the only goal of the game, and a failure to reply against their local enemy has left Tottenham on just four points from their opening four Premier League games and already with some catching up to do against European chasing sides. But whilst there has been discourse over fans being uninspired by the results on offer, Ornstein claims that Tottenham's board will have full faith in the Australian gaffer.

Ornstein: Postecoglou Criticism 'Not Replicated' by Club

The Australian boss has had his critics in recent days

Speaking on The Athletic FC's podcast on Monday, Ornstein stated that despite Tottenham fans being displeased with Postecoglou for the result against Arsenal, he believes the top brass in the white half of north London won't budge on their stance on keeping him. The Athletic journalist said:

"So this noise and understandable reaction from a lot of the public, and Spurs fans post the north London derby defeat, I suspect will not be replicated inside the club and in the hierarchy.

"If they are fully behind Ange Postecoglou in the way that Arsenal were when Mikel Arteta was facing external pressure, then you'd like to think that in time, things will improve.

"Whether it's in the way that Arsenal have, or better, or worse, we will have to wait and see."

Ange Postecoglou Could Look to Emulate Arteta

The Australian boss needs to be afforded time for a rebuild

Owners in the modern era can without doubt get wrapped up in the results-based, financially-driven side of the game - and managers at present are generally being afforded less time to fully develop and create a clear pathway for themselves, the club and the playing squad than they did in years gone by.

GIVEMESPORT Key Statistic: Ange Postecoglou has managed 45 games in charge of Tottenham, winning 22 and drawing eight.

Arteta's reign at Arsenal is a rare example of allowing a manager time to settle down, block out the negative noises surrounding the club and get the foundations in place for a better future, which the Gunners are now absolutely being rewarded for.

Postecoglou will look to do the same at Tottenham. You can already see his plans for the future in north London with the likes of Archie Gray, Lucas Bergvall and Wilson Odobert all being bought this summer. Signing three teenage players who will all play key roles for the club in months and years to come means that initial success is not paramount at Tottenham, and having failed to have won a major trophy for 16 years, the Aussie could be looking to change the tide by signing three prodigies who will undoubtedly become stars in three or more years' time.

Tottenham's failure to win major honours by signing older stars from across Europe hasn't entirely worked over the past decade, so by introducing younger players who will have time to integrate into a system, it will either see them develop into top-class players for Tottenham, or elsewhere for huge fees where Spurs can reinvest that money.
