'Pressure Will Start to Build' on Postecoglou at Tottenham

Tottenham Hotspur boss Ange Postecoglou will start having pressure mounting on him after suffering a north London derby defeat to Arsenal, according to BBC Radio 5 Live pundit Matthew Upson.

Spurs fell to their second Premier League loss of the season on Sunday, thanks to a narrow 1-0 reverse at home to their bitter rivals. Defender Gabriel Magalhaes scored the only goal of the contest shortly after the hour mark, following some poor defending from the home side when facing a corner.

Postecoglou’s side were beaten 2-1 by Newcastle United before the international break, while they only managed a 1-1 draw against Leicester City in their opening game of the campaign. Their solitary win so far has come in the form of a 4-0 victory at home to Everton at the end of last month.

Postecoglou in Midst of Difficult Spell at Spurs

North Londoners suffered derby defeat to Arsenal

In light of Tottenham's defeat to Arsenal, Upson, who featured for the likes of the Gunners and West Ham United during his playing career, claimed that Postecoglou will come under pressure should he struggle to oversee a good run of form. The Greek-Australian tactician has been in charge of Spurs since last summer, and he guided them to a fifth-placed finish in his first campaign at the club.

However, Upson has criticised the team’s defensive capabilities and believes summer signing Dominic Solanke has struggled to hit the ground running. Spurs signed the former Bournemouth striker for £65million during the transfer window as their statement arrival.

Upson told BBC Radio 5 Live:

“Tottenham are so susceptible defensively that it's a real problem. They are not being clinical enough either, which is what the real hammer blow is.

“If you're going to be that offensive and that open and free, you've got to bang the ball in the back of the net, and they're not doing that. Dominic Solanke is having a rough start. He was playing against two of the best today.

“The pressure is going to start to build a bit on the manager.”

Why Timber Was Not Sent Off Against Spurs

It was a controversial moment in the North London derby

In the first half of the derby at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Arsenal’s Jurrien Timber avoided being given his matching orders as tempers frayed. The Dutchman put in a heavy challenge on Spurs’ Pedro Porro, which resulted in tensions reaching boiling point.

Lilywhites goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario was involved in the melee and Timber grabbed the Italian’s shirt. Timber was booked for the challenge on Porro, while Vicario was cautioned for instigating the commotion.

According to Gary Neville, speaking on Sky Sports, those at Stockley Park reviewed Timber’s challenge. It has been claimed that the defender touched the ball, but didn’t follow through over it, which prevented the yellow card from being upgraded.

The Premier League match centre also confirmed on X that VAR checked for a potential red card, but confirmed referee Jarred Gillett's on-field decision. It was a lucky escape for Arsenal as they were already missing midfielder Declan Rice through suspension.

Tottenham Hotspur may have enjoyed the lion's share of possession against their local rivals, Arsenal, inside an atmospheric Tottenham Hotspur Stadium - but an emphatic headed goal from Gabriel Magalhaes saw their north London rivals leave with all the spoils.

Struck by injuries to key midfield personnel such as Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard, Mikel Arteta's side managed to return to the red half of north London with three extra points on the board.

David Raya was called into action in the first five minutes to deny Dejan Kulusevski from bagging the opener, while the Spaniard - once again - thwarted another chance from the Swede two minutes after as the visitors found themselves under copious amounts of pressure.

The Gunners struggled to get a foothold on the highly anticipated Premier League encounter with Ange Postecoglou and Co enjoying a positive first 45 minutes, though their attacking attempts were to no avail.

A monstrous leap from Gabriel Magalhaes saw Arsenal take the lead against their fierce rivals, leaving Guglielmo Vicario flailing his arms in the air, much to the delight of the travelling - albeit just up the road - contingent.

From that point onwards, Arteta and Co were in full control of the affair and, despite Tottenham enjoying the majority of the possession, Arsenal's work and shape when out of possession made them very difficult to break down - as the hosts began to realise.

Tottenham Hotspur Player Ratings

Maddison and Solanke struggled to produced in the final third

GK – Guglielmo Vicario – 7/10

Remained alert when called upon and received a yellow for his involvement in the byline scuffle in the 35th minute.

RB – Pedro Porro – 7/10

Reduced Martinelli to sour grapes as he asserted his dominance on the Brazilian, and he covered plenty of grass up and down the left flank as he proved to be an attacking nuisance from minute one to 90.

CB – Cristian Romero – 6.5/10

Aggressive as usual, the bitty Argentine - alongside his defensive teammates - kept Arsenal at bay in the early embers and the Argentine was up to his tough-tackling antics as always. Poor marking for Gabriel's opener.

CB – Micky van de Ven – 6/10

Upon his return to action, the Dutchman struggled in the heart of the Tottenham defence. His raw speed when teams are on the attack remains an impressive sight and, without it, the score line could have been very different.

LB – Destiny Udogie – 6/10

Picked up Tottenham's first booking of the afternoon after struggling with the trickery of Saka. Ventured into central midfield to provide depth and cover int he middle but to little effect.

CM – Rodrigo Bentancur – 6/10

Left with an underwhelming amount of defensive work to do, Bentancur covered a lot of grass in his all-action role.

CM – Dejan Kulusevski – 6.5/10

Picked up some lovely positions between the Arsenal lines and was, perhaps, unlucky not to get on the scoresheet in the opening 10 minutes.

CAM – James Maddison – 6/10

We've become accustomed to James Maddison's pinpoint deliveries - and the latest instalment of the north London derby was no different. Looked largely ineffectual when dropping deep to receive the ball, however.

RW – Brennan Johnson – 5/10

A tumultuous showing from the Welshman, who looked to be in two minds every time he was on the ball - evidenced by his shot on the cusp of half-time that cleared the bar. Hooked on the 67-minute mark.

ST – Dominic Solanke – 6/10

Energetic and intelligent from the off, Solanke impressively thrived in the strident atmosphere, though he will be kicking himself for not letting off his shots earlier. His work rate faded in the second half and he was largely anonymous.

LW – Son Heung-min – 5.5/10

Not at his firing best, Son was unable to pounce on a poor White performance, much to the annoyance of the home crowd.

Sub – Pape Matar Sarr – 5/10

Brought on to add a bit of grit and determination to Tottenham's centre of the park in the deep midfield role.

Sub – Wilson Odobert – 4/10

The winger made little of his possession when introduced and his audacious shot was blocked on the verge of the full-time whistle.

Sub – Timo Werner – 4/10

Introduced to make an impact in the final third.

Arsenal Player Ratings

Gabriel and Saliba shine in the heart of the defence

GK – David Raya – 7/10

Alert to the majority of shots that were directed towards his goal and kept his side in with a shout of winning in the opening stages of the encounter.

RB – Ben White – 5/10

An atypical bad performance from the Englishman, who often gave up possession unnecessarily, in an otherwise solid Arsenal defence.

CB – Gabriel Magalhaes – 8.5/10

Gabriel remains one of the most underrated centre-backs in the English top tier. The Brazilian rose above the rest to put his side in front to top off a masterful display at the heart of his side's back line.

CB – William Saliba – 8/10

Picked up an unnecessary booking after delaying the re-start but Saliba was imperious as always. An absolute man mountain who put out plenty of fires today against a dynamic Tottenham front line.

LB – Jurrien Timber – 8/10

A brilliant performance from the Dutchman, who was strong defensively and a menace going forward at the same time. He did, perhaps controversially, avoid receiving a red card for his challenge on Porro in the first half.

CM – Thomas Partey – 5/10

What lets Thomas Partey down, in possession at least, is his naivety on the ball. Too often did the Ghanaian take an extra touch, which instantly put his side in jeopardy - but luckily for him, no mistake was pounced on by Postecoglou's men.

CM – Jorginho – 5/10

His lack of pace was on show in a game of such high intensity, and he lost possession on plenty of occasions. Fans of Arsenal will be excited at the prospect of Rice returning to the fold on the back of the Italian's performance.

CAM – Leandro Trossard – 5/10

Playing the 'Martin Odegaard' role, Trossard struggled. The Belgian failed to release the ball quickly enough and, as a result, got caught on the ball a lot and in very dangerous areas.

RW – Bukayo Saka – 7/10

Helped White to double up on Son Heung-min, which didn't go unnoticed by the pundits and was one of Arsenal's brighter sparks in the final third, and delivered the all-crucial ball for Gabriel to nod home.

ST – Kai Havertz – 7/10

Often wasteful with his passing, Havertz was, however, a tricky customer for Van de Ven all afternoon, as he put himself about across the Tottenham back four. Again, the former Chelsea man lacked a level of calmness in the box.

LW – Gabriel Martinelli – 6/10

After falling down Arteta's pecking order on the left, injuries allowed Martinelli to return to his usual spot on the left. The Brazilian had plenty of chances to give his side the lead but ultimately struggled to make a difference when it mattered the most - in front of goal.

Sub – Gabriel Jesus – 5/10

Joined the fray with just over 10 minutes of regulation time left on the clock.

Sub – Raheem Sterling – 5/10

Replaced Martinelli on the left to make his Arsenal debut and will take time to bed in to Arsenal's culture.

Sub – Ethan Nwaneri – 4/10

The youngster was given the final five minutes of normal time.

Man of the Match

Gabriel Magalhaes (Arsenal)

Just one glance of his celebrations shows how much the centre-back's header meant to Arsenal's title aspirations. Effective in both boxes, Gabriel's partnership with Saliba continues to be one of the most - if not the most - imperious in the world.

In terms of his appetite to throw his body on the line and defend Raya's goal, the 26-year-old put it - yet another - brilliant performance for the capital club, who have painted the north of the capital red after an imperious derby day victory, courtesy of the ex-Lille man.

Vicario Making Neville 'Nervous' in Tottenham vs Arsenal

Submitted by daniel on

Description

An antsy five minutes in north London between Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal saw both teams acting slightly erratically and frantically towards the end of the first half - and it saw Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville take aim at Spurs goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, describing the Italian as having 'frogs in his pants' when defending a corner.

What had been an end-to-end, yet fairly tame game on Sunday afternoon almost came to blows when a Jurrien Timber tackle on Pedro Porro saw the Dutchman booked for a challenge that almost resulted in a red card after a VAR check. However, once the ball had gone out of play, tempers flared when Timber and Vicario grabbed each other's shirts in a small tussle, before they were broken up via yellow cards amid petty handbags between the pair.

Neville Says Vicario Had "Frogs in His Pants"

The Italian was overly emotional after the tussle

From the resulting corner, Vicario was filled with angst and was found gesturing to his Tottenham defence - which Neville said made him feel 'nervous' as it would panic his teammates.

Speaking live on Sky Sports' coverage of the north London derby, Neville couldn't agree with Vicario's actions - describing the Italian star as having 'frogs in his pants' for his wild actions prior to the corner that eventually amounted to nothing. He said live on air:

"I just don't like it when goalkeepers are sort of throwing their arms around and looking like they're panicking at all...it makes me nervous. Look at him. He's got frogs in his pants."

Tottenham Will Need to Rely on Vicario

The goalkeeper is generally reliable despite an antsy derby

Vicario was one of Tottenham's better signings last season under Ange Postecoglou, and was generally considered as one of the top goalkeepers in the Premier League in the previous campaign.

GIVEMESPORT Key Statistic: Guglielmo Vicario made his Italy debut against Ecuador back in March.

Today wasn't his best outing, though. The moment his yellow card occurred, the former Empoli stopper was always battling against Arsenal's attackers and that proved true for the goal. He was too obsessed about tussling with Arsenal's attackers in the six-yard box as a corner was swung in, and by the time he readjusted himself to deal with Gabriel's header, there was little he could do to stop the Brazilian powering the Gunners ahead as they held on to a 1-0 lead.

Tottenham will need their stopper throughout the season, though. He's generally reliable, and at 27, he has a huge career ahead of him of around a decade - which will only be enhanced by the Italy caps that he has picked up in the last calendar year for the Azzurri.

For Tottenham, defeat at home to their local rivals leaves them on just four points from two games, with back-to-back defeats coming against Newcastle United and Mikel Arteta's side - with their only saving grace being the 4-0 hammering of Everton in their first home game of the season.

Postecoglou knows that his team will need to pick up points going forward if they are to remain in the race for a European spot, but with tricky ties coming up at home to Brentford before traveling to Manchester United and Brighton, they could be further behind than they'd like by October.

Romano: Tottenham Star Set for 'Big Opportunity' vs Arsenal

Description

Fabrizio Romano has revealed his thoughts ahead of Sunday's North London derby between Tottenham and Arsenal at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with the transfer guru believing Dominic Solanke could play a major role in the game.

Spurs approach the match having accumulated four points from their opening three Premier League matches of the campaign, having suffered a disappointing 2-1 defeat at St. James' Park against Newcastle United prior to the international break. The Lillywhites were without marquee new signing Solanke, who also missed Ange Postecoglou's side's previous game, a 4-0 win over Everton, through injury.

The former Bournemouth striker has passed a fitness test and is expected to feature against the Gunners, in what could be the prolific number nine's first taste of a top-six encounter in a Spurs shirt.

Romano: It's a Big Opportunity for Solanke

The forward was productive last season

Having left Liverpool for Bournemouth in January 2019 for a purported £19 million, Solanke has now established himself as a reliable goalscorer at Premier League level. The one-time-capped England international enjoyed an exceptionally fruitful season in the Championship in the 2021/22 season, before netting 19 top-flight goals last campaign for the Cherries.

This productive year prompted Spurs to move for the 27-year-old, acquiring him for a fee that could rise to £65 million if performance-related add-ons are met, back in mid-August. Postecoglou views Solanke as having the ability to provide a focal point for the likes of Son Heung-Min and Dejan Kulusevski to play off either side of him.

However, due to an ankle injury, the former Chelsea man has made just one appearance thus far, drawing a blank on his debut against Leicester City. Expected to be ready in time to face Arsenal, Romano wrote in his Daily Briefing that he's looking forward to seeing Solanke in action:

"I see Arsenal as favourites in the North London Derby even with the injuries they’ve suffered in the recent weeks. It’s going to be an open game, and I’m sure Tottenham will compete very well, so it’s going to be interesting.

'I’m looking forward to seeing the impact of Dom Solanke on his first big match for Spurs - it’s a big opportunity for him."

Despite Arsenal's superiority in recent years, Spurs come into the game with serious hope of attaining points due to Arsenal being without the injured Martin Odegaard and Mikel Merino, while Declan Rice is suspended after receiving a controversial red card against Brighton.

Spurs Eyeing Angel Gomes

The midfielder made his England debut this week

Alongside Solanke, Spurs acquired the likes of Wilson Odobert, Archie Gray, Lucas Bergvall and Timo Wener, in what was an active summer transfer window. However, the North Londoners have already drawn up a shortlist of future targets, with the club said to be eying Tuesday night's England dubutant Angel Gomes.

Gomes, who impressed against Finland, has a year remaining on his contract with Lille, and is also a target for Aston Villa and West Ham United. The 24-year-old made 31 Ligue 1 appearances last season, establishing himself as one of the most accomplished midfielders in France in recent years.

Tottenham Eye 'Phenomenal' England Star Angel Gomes

Tottenham Hotspur are among the clubs interested in Lille and England midfielder Angel Gomes, with Newcastle, Liverpool, and Borussia Dortmund also eyeing the 24-year-old, according to The Sun.

A string of clubs are reportedly targeting the former Manchester United youngster, who starred in England’s win over Finland on Tuesday night as he made his full Three Lions debut.

According to a report, the playmaker's recent performances and his contract situation have seen a host of teams register their interest in a potential transfer for 2025, including several Premier League clubs looking to bring him back to the English top flight.

Gomes Eyes Premier League Return

After four seasons at Lille

According to The Sun, Gomes faces no shortage of suitors after his impressive England debut, with Tottenham, Newcastle, and Liverpool keen to bring the 24-year-old midfielder back to the Premier League.

Gomes joined Man United’s youth ranks in 2006 at just six years old, and swiftly progressed through the Red Devils' academy but had limited first-team opportunities before departing for Lille in 2020.

The impressive midfielder was handed his United debut on the final day of the 2016/17 season but made only nine further senior appearances for the Red Devils across all competitions.

Gomes, who was praised as "excellent" by England interim manager Lee Carsley, impressed during the 2023/24 campaign at Lille, helping the club finish fourth in the table and qualify for the Champions League for the first time in three years.

The 24-year-old is not planning to renew his current deal at the end of the season and is expected to depart for a new challenge, with a return to the Premier League now on the cards.

Per the report, Newcastle are understood to be the club showing the most interest in Gomes at the moment and have earmarked the midfielder as their ‘top target’. The Magpies could even consider a January bid for Gomes, who has impressed in France in recent years, establishing himself as one of the most creative midfielders in Ligue 1.

Last season, only Paris Saint-Germain star Ousmane Dembele registered more assists than Gomes’s eight in all of France’s top flight, as he finished level with Romain Del Castillo, and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Reguilon Spurs Future Uncertain

‘At risk of being frozen out’

Tottenham outcast Sergio Reguilon is at risk of being frozen out of the first team after failing to secure a move away from the club, GIVEMESPORT sources have revealed.

Spurs have been eager to offload the 27-year-old left-back, who is in the final year of his contract, but have so far failed to find any potential buyers.

Reguilon spent last season on loan at Manchester United and Brentford and was touted for a return to Old Trafford, as well as a move to Turkey, with both Galatasaray and Fenerbahce showing interest. However no move has materialised, and the Spaniard could now find himself frozen out of Ange Postecoglou's side for the rest of the year.

The left-back moved to Spurs from Real Madrid in 2020 in a deal worth up to £32million, making 67 appearances across all competitions, scoring two goals and registering two assists.

Arteta Drops Big Martin Odegaard Update for Arsenal v Spurs

Mikel Arteta has shared an update on the fitness of Martin Odegaard ahead of Arsenal's clash with Tottenham on Sunday afternoon.

The Gunners travel across the city to take on their fierce rivals in the first North London Derby of the season, having dropped points for the first time in the current campaign last time out with a draw at home to Brighton.

But Arteta, fresh off signing a new long-term deal at the Emirates, has a selection headache in midfield heading into the game and has shared an update on the fitness of his captain for Sunday's crunch Premier League clash.

Odegaard All But Ruled Out of Spurs Clash

Skipper suffered an ankle injury with Norway

While featuring for Norway against Austria on Monday, playmaker Odegaard picked up a nasty looking ankle injury and was forced to come off during the second half of the game.

He was pictured on crutches while boarding a plane back to London the following day, and reports have since stated that he could be set to miss several weeks of action as a result. However, while Arteta refused to confirm how long he will be out for, the Spaniard confirmed the playmaker would undergo more tests before a decision is made on his availability.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference, Arteta said:

"We need more tests, let’s see what happens in the next day or so and see how quickly we can get him back. We have to wait and see. He’s willing and he wants to be present in every game. We need to make sure we know first how good he is or not."

In addition to Odegaard's likely absence, Arsenal will be without the suspended Declan Rice after his controversial red card against Brighton while summer signing Mikel Merino broke his arm in his first training session and is set for several weeks on the sidelines before he can make his debut.

The Gunners have a trip to Italy to take on Atalanta in their opening Champions League fixture in midweek, before a trip to Premier League champions Manchester City next weekend in another huge clash.

Leandro Trossard Could Replace Odegaard

Arteta looking for solutions to solve his crisis

With several midfielders unavailable, Arteta has some decisions to make on who starts in the heart of the pitch.

Jorginho and Thomas Partey are the experienced and natural replacements to come in for Merino and Rice, but to add a more creative arm to the side GIVEMESPORT sources have revealed that the manager is considering giving Leandro Trossard a new role in midfield.

The Belgian winger has shown his versatility since joining the club from Brighton, playing out wide and as a central striker on occasion too, but he could now drop deeper to help fill a gap as Arteta doesn't want to throw youngster Ethan Nwaneri in at the deep end for his top-flight debut.

With Trossard moving deeper, it would open the door for Raheem Sterling to potentially make his debut out wide after joining on loan from Chelsea while Gabriel Martinelli is also pushing to get back in the team on the left wing.

Tottenham Duo Ruled Out v Arsenal, Bissouma Doubtful

Ange Postecoglou has shared a major fitness update for Tottenham ahead of their Premier League clash with Arsenal on Sunday.

The Lilywhites are preparing for the North London Derby at home after suffering a disappointing defeat to Newcastle in their last outing before the international break, leaving them with a mixed start to the season after one win, one draw and one defeat in their opening three games.

But now they will have to turn in one of their best performances of the campaign in order to get all three points, with Postecoglou revealing that they will be without several first-team stars for the game due to injury concerns.

Richarlison Ruled Out for Spurs

Solanke, Van De Ven fit, Bissouma doubtful

Brazilian striker Richarlison has been suffering with a knee injury so far this season and continues to recover, meaning he will be unavailable for the game in a blow to the team's attacking options.

But in more positive news record signing Dominic Solanke is expected to be available for the game after recovering from a knee injury of his own, while the international break has given Micky Van De Ven the chance to recover and he should return to the squad in N17 also.

£35million midfielder Yves Bissouma was forced off injured on international duty for Mali in midweek after a heavy tackle, and a decision will be made in the coming days as Postecoglou weighs up the best system to go with for derby day. Speaking at his pre-match press conference, the manager said:

"It’s fairly positive. Micky's good, he's trained all the way through the international break and it was good for him to stay with us to build him back up so he's ready to go.

"Dom's improved as well and trained the back half of this week. We still have two days to go with those guys so hopefully they get through training ok and are available.

“We had the last of the boys in late [on Thursday] so we'll have a look at them today and everyone's reporting all well except for Biss.

“He's got a bit of an issue, but we'll have a look at him over the next couple of days and see how it settles.”“Richy's still got a bit of work to do, alongside Will Lankshear who is still in rehab.”

Spurs were handed a major boost in the week as Arsenal were hit with a midfield crisis. Declan Rice is suspended for the game while Mikel Merino suffered a broken arm in his first training session, and Martin Odegaard is expected to miss several weeks of action after being pictured on crutches following an ankle injury picked up on international duty.

Tottenham will have a selection headache of the positive kind with all of Heung-Min Son, Dejan Kulusevski, James Maddison, Timo Werner and Brennan Johnson all battling with Solanke for a start in the attacking lineup.

Tottenham Eye 'Exceptional' New Striker

Leeds have already been told of interest

Despite the signing of Solanke in the summer for a club-record fee of £65million, Tottenham are not done strengthening their attack and have identified a potential star for the future that they want to sign.

After signing teenager Archie Gray from Leeds United in the summer, the Lilywhites are now also interested in his 15-year-old younger brother Harry, who has been a prolific goalscorer at youth level.

The club have already informed Leeds of their interest in the youngster, but they face competition from Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Newcastle United for his signature. Elland Road chiefs are hopeful of keeping him at the club for a potential first-team run like his brother, but are powerless to stop other clubs offering him terms as he cannot sign a professional deal until he turns 17.

'Whispers' £265,000-a-Week Arsenal Star is Fit for Tottenham

Submitted by daniel on

Description

Rumours have circulated that Gabriel Jesus will be fit for Arsenal's trip to Tottenham in this weekend's North London derby, according to journalist Tom Canton.

Jesus suffered a groin issue in August, and missed the Gunners' last two Premier League fixtures, a win away at Aston Villa and a frustrating draw with Brighton. The Brazilian struggled last season in front of goal for Mikel Arteta's side, scoring just four league goals, but his re-emergence would be positive news for the Spanish manager, as he faces something of an injury crisis in midfield, with three players ruled out.

Martin Odegaard suffered an ankle injury whilst on international duty with Norway, Mikel Merino is out until late October with a fractured shoulder, while Declan Rice was shown a controversial red card against Brighton prior to the international break. This significant list of absentees will likely provoke a reconfiguration of the team from Arteta, as his side looks to claim its third consecutive victory at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Canton: Jesus May Be Fit

The striker has consistently struggled with injuries at Arsenal

Since arriving from Manchester City in the summer of 2022 for £45 million, Jesus has persistently missed large portions of Arsenal's last two campaigns with injuries. Sparkling in his first six months at the Emirates, the forward missed three months due to a knee injury in his debut campaign in Islington, derailing the Gunners' title charge.

While he still managed to find the back of the net 11 times that season, last campaign he evidently played through injury, and ended the year with just eight accurate strikes 36 appearances. However, with a crucial encounter with rivals Tottenham awaiting this Sunday, Arteta will be delighted to potentially have another dangerous option at his disposal to call upon if need be.

Speaking on the 'Gold and Guest Talk Tottenham' podcast, Canton revealed that Jesus may be fit, and pointed out how this could allow Arteta to move Kai Havertz into midfield in the absence of Odegaard and Rice:

"It's interesting because one of the other decisions is on Gabriel Jesus. And if Jesus is back, which there are some whispers that he could be, I think that'll probably most certainly see Kai Havertz drop into the midfield, and then it'll be Jorginho and (Thomas) Partey. I think even if Odegaard had have been fit, Havertz still would have dropped in to replace Declan Rice."

Sterling Could Make Debut

The winger signed from Chelsea on deadline day

In a shock deadline day transfer, Arsenal signed Chelsea outcast Raheem Sterling on loan, with the Gunners not paying the Blues a loan fee for the player. Another by-product of the depleted nature of the midfield could be that Sterling makes his debut in a red shirt against Tottenham this weekend.

The England international scored eight goals and provided four assists for the West Londoners last season in 31 Premier League appearances, and thus clearly still has plenty to offer at this level. With Havertz likely moving into midfield, the experienced wide man could form a front three involving Jesus and Bukayo Saka against the Lilywhites.

Arsenal Starting 17-Year-Old vs Spurs 'Would be Irresponsible'

Description

Arsenal's current midfield injury crisis has seen 17-year-old Ethan Nwaneri touted with the chance to potentially feature against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, in what is a huge game in the Premier League. But Arsenal journalist Charles Watts has gone against the notion of the idea, stating that it would be "verging on irresponsible" for the Enfield-born star to be chucked into a north London derby for just his third top-flight appearance in his young career.

Nwaneri made his Arsenal debut in the 2022/23 season at the age of just 15, becoming the first and only 15-year-old to ever play in the Premier League. Smashing Harvey Elliott's record for Fulham, Nwaneri has a bright future ahead of him - especially having scored 15 goals for England's under-17 side in just 28 midfield caps. But Watts believes it is too soon to throw him in to the deep end of the derby - believing it could do "more harm than good".

Nwaneri Starting for Arsenal vs Tottenham 'Irresponsible'

The youngster has talent but this is a game for experience

Martin Odegaard, Declan Rice and Mikel Merino are all unavailable for the short trip to Tottenham on Sunday, leaving Jorginho and Thomas Partey as the two double-pivots in the centre of the park.

One of Kai Havertz or Leandro Trossard are likely to play in the No.10 role, and there simply isn't enough midfield quality with Arsenal's main stars out injured.

That may have to see emergency planning, such as Nwaneri being called in or Oleksandr Zinchenko moving from left-back to midfield. However, Watts believes that despite there obviously being a chance that Nwaneri blossoms, it's unlikely he will flourish from the off. He said on his YouTube channel.

"I think it would be verging on the irresponsible, Ethan Nwaneri to be given his first competitive Premier League minutes. I know he's played, but he's played when games are won.

"For those first Premier League minutes of note to come in the north London derby at Tottenham and away to Manchester City, I think it could run the risk of a really serious backfiring that does more harm than good to Ethan Nwaneri's long-term career.

"I could be wrong, like he could start Nwaneri and it could live up to all of the hopes and dreams and prove himself from the very outset to be the next young superstar of the English game. But I kind of think that's a long shot."

Ethan Nwaneri is Better Coming Off The Bench

Derby occasions can be too much for teenagers

Nwaneri is obviously a top talent and, having made his Arsenal debut so young, he's a record-breaker who is valued highly by the club. The young talent is likely to feature in the FA Cup and League Cup throughout the campaign, alongside the later minutes of games in the Premier League should Arsenal be cruising ahead with no danger of squandering a lead.

GIVEMESPORT Key Statistic: Nwaneri scored 11 goals in just 15 games for Arsenal under-21's in the Premier League 2 last season.

However, chucking him into the north London derby would be uncharacteristic for manager Mikel Arteta, and he will know better than to start the 17-year-old when the stakes are high so early in the season.

If Nwaneri can come on to retain possession in the scenario that Arsenal are leading by a goal or two in the dying embers, it would suit Nwaneri more than entering the field of play when tackles are flying in to appease the derby crowds early doors.

Arsenal star Leandro Trossard has given Mikel Arteta a selection headache ahead of the north London derby against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, GIVEMESPORT sources have revealed - as the Spaniard aims to work his way around the sudden injury picked up by Martin Odegaard by selecting the Belgium star.

Trossard was one of Arsenal's better performers last season as they came close to a Premier League title, in a race with Manchester City that was only decided on the final day. But having failed to start the club's opening two games, sources have stated that he is unhappy at being excluded - and that desire to feature from the off could prompt Arteta to give him the nod.

Sources: Trossard 'In The Race' to Start vs Tottenham

Trossard hasn't started often but injuries have forced Arsenal's hand

GIVEMESPORT sources have revealed that Trossard has given Arteta a selection headache ahead of the away clash at Tottenham on Sunday - as the Belgian is in contention to start in the north London derby.

The former Brighton man has surprisingly not been talked about much in the build-up to the game, despite the Gunners needing to solve a midfield crisis that sees Odegaard, Declan Rice and Mikel Merino all ruled out for the crunch clash. But sources are convinced that he is in the thinking for this game.

Arteta is aware that Trossard was frustrated not to have started for the club in the first two games of the season, and his goal in the 2-0 win over Aston Villa in late August drew a muted celebration - perhaps letting his feelings known at not being a first-team starter.

Trossard believes that he deserves more of a chance in the first-team, and is thought to have a 'stubborn streak' in him. The forward wants to play in the big games and make an impact, and that has given Arteta a big decision over which role he could be utilised in against their bitter rivals.

Sources believe that Trossard is more likely to start than Raheem Sterling if both are fit due to his understanding of the team and the system - and whilst he would probably start on the left, he can also feature up front and in attacking midfield, too. Arteta has liked Trossard leading the line before, with the Belgian swapping with Gabriel Martinelli in-game - and as such, he can't be ruled out to start against Ange Postecoglou's men.

Arteta Selection Headache Poses Many Possibilities

The Gunners have an array of versatile attacking talent

Trossard enjoyed his best season in the capital yet with 17 games in 46 games in all competitions, and with Martinelli having failed to impress last season, you can understand the Belgian's frustrations.

GIVEMESPORT Key Statistic: Leandro Trossard has 39 goals and 25 assists in 173 Premier League games for Brighton and Arsenal.

Bukayo Saka is the only sure-fire starter on the right-wing, but the quintet of Kai Havertz, Gabriel Jesus, Trossard, Martinelli and Sterling are all battling over three attacking places, with Jorginho and Thomas Partey likely to start in the double-pivot in midfield.

Havertz has the most experience in the hole, but Jesus hasn't featured much and so the German could start up front; which would leave Trossard as the choice to play in the hole, and Sterling may then rival Martinelli for the starting berth on the left.
