Newcastle are in talks with Everton over a deal for striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

The 27-year-old has a year left on his contract at Goodison Park and is a player Newcastle boss Eddie Howe has been monitoring for several years, although a deal could be tricky depending on the financial package the player and Everton want.

Calvert-Lewin, who has 11 caps for England, has scored 68 goals in 247 appearances across all competitions for Everton since making his debut in 2016.

In a separate deal, Everton are interested in signing Newcastle winger Yankuba Minteh.

The 19-year-old spent a successful season with Arne Slot's Feyenoord last year but has never played a game for Newcastle.

However, there are a number of European clubs also interested in Minteh and preparing to rival Everton's potential offer.

Both moves would help Newcastle and Everton with their respective issues around profit and sustainability rules (PSR).

Iroegbunam becomes Everton's first summer signing

With Calvert-Lewin potentially leaving Merseyside, Everton announced their first signing of the summer transfer window on Saturday, with midfielder Tim Iroegbunam arriving on a three-year deal from Aston Villa.

The 20-year-old, who has cost a reported £9m, was a European U19 Championship winner with England in 2022 and has also represented the U20s.

Iroegbunam came through West Brom's academy, making his senior debut in May 2021 before moving to Villa a month later.

He made his debut for Villa in February 2022 and went on to make 12 Premier League appearances for them, although only two were starts.

"We're pleased to add Tim to our midfield options. He is a young player who is still learning and developing but clearly has a lot of the qualities we want in that area of the pitch," said Everton manager Sean Dyche.

"My coaching staff and I are looking forward to starting to work with him in pre-season."

Villa are currently in talks with Everton to sign 21-year-old winger Lewis Dobbin.

PSR explained: What limits clubs spending more?

In the simplest terms, when every Premier League team tots up their annual accounts, they can have made a loss no greater than £105m across the previous three seasons.

Clubs can only lose £15m of their own money across those three years. So that's no more than £15m extra on outgoings like transfer fees, player wages and, in a lot of clubs' cases, paying off former managers compared to their income from TV payments, season tickets, selling players and so on.

The other £90m of any £105m must be guaranteed by their owners buying up shares, known as 'secure funding', and essentially means bankrolling the club.

Bayern Munich have reached an agreement with Crystal Palace to sign winger Michael Olise, according to Sky Germany.

The Bundesliga giants will pay €60m (£50.7m) including add-ons to bring the 22-year-old to the Allianz Arena.

Last week, Sky Sports News reported that Bayern, Chelsea and Newcastle had approached Palace before Chelsea dropped out of the race to sign Olise.

Chelsea offered the player a competitive financial package but he wanted to move to Bayern. He is now expected to sign a contract until 2029 with Vincent Kompany's side.

After joining Palace in 2021, Olise scored 10 goals and provided six assists in 19 appearances last season, despite a largely injury-hit campaign. His current deal with the Premier League club was not due to expire until 2027.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe: Manchester United co-owner believes over-regulation could 'ruin' Premier League

Submitted by daniel on
Picture

Description

Manchester United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe understands why rivals Manchester City are challenging Premier League financial rules and warned the competition faces "ruin" if regulation goes too far.

City are suing the league over its associated party transaction (APT) rules, which are designed to ensure commercial deals linked to a club's ownership are done for fair market value.

Ratcliffe sympathised with City, and told Bloomberg: "I can understand why they are challenging it. You can understand why they would say that they want an open market, (a) free market."

Ratcliffe said the Premier League needed to be "careful" not to end up in "an endless legal wrangle with lots of clubs".

Everton and Nottingham Forest were docked a combined 12 points for breaching the league's profitability and sustainability rules (PSR) last season, while City face a hearing in the autumn charged with 115 breaches of Premier League rules.

Ratcliffe said: "The Premier League is probably the most successful sporting league in the world, certainly the most successful football league in the world. And we have this expression in northern England: 'If it ain't broke, don't fix it.'

"If you start interfering too much, bringing too much regulation in, then you finish up with the Manchester City issue, you finish up with the Everton issue, you finish up with the Nottingham Forest issue - on and on and on.

"If you're not careful the Premier League is going to finish up spending more time in court than it is thinking about what's good for the league. We have got the best league in the world, don't ruin that league for heaven's sake."

United voted in favour of strengthening the APT rules in February which City are now challenging, but joined the Blues in voting against a proposal called 'anchoring' which would put a cap on the amount clubs can spend on wages, transfer and agents' fees.

"(Anchoring) would inhibit the top clubs in the Premier League," INEOS co-founder Ratcliffe said.

"And the last thing you want is for the top clubs in the Premier League not to be able to compete with Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, PSG - that's absurd.

"And if it does, it then ceases to be the finest league in the world."

Ratcliffe said there had been a "drift into complexity" in the Premier League towards over-regulation since the departure of Richard Scudamore. Anchoring is set to be trialled on a shadow basis in the Premier League next season.

Ratcliffe also said an independent football regulator "won't be good" for the game.

The Conservatives, Labour and the Liberal Democrats all remain committed to a regulator in their General Election manifestos.

Why Man Utd want Zirkzee, the volcano ready to erupt

Why Man Utd could make an exception for left-footer Branthwaite

Ratcliffe also revealed he intends to put French side Nice, majority-owned by INEOS, in a blind trust for the coming season in order to comply with UEFA multi-club ownership rules and allow United and Nice to compete side by side in the Europa League.

UEFA revealed last month this would be an option for next season only, beyond that and shares would have to be sold in order to comply.

Ratcliffe said it was "not (INEOS') intention" to sell Nice, and spoke about how he saw the Cote d'Azur club being able to develop players for United and also utilise their position within the European Union to sign promising U18 footballers, something United are unable to do.

Ratcliffe, who backed Britain's exit from the EU in 2016, added: "Because of Brexit it's quite difficult now to contract the younger generational talents in Europe, but Nice could do that.

"If it's a fantastic 15-year-old in France we can sign him up to Nice and use Nice as a conduit to Manchester United later on."

Ratcliffe said United had "made lots of poor decisions" over the last decade, and that a marquee signing like France star Kylian Mbappe is not the answer to the problems facing the Red Devils right now.

"Everywhere we look there's room for improvement, and we will improve everything because we want to be competing for the Premier League every year," he added.

"And I don't think the solution is to buy an Mbappe.

"One player isn't going to solve the problem, you need to build a balanced squad and we need to make progress with the squad and ultimately you top it off with one or two players like Mbappe, but that's not the solution today."

Steve Cooper: Leicester City name former Nottingham Forest boss as new manager

Submitted by daniel on

Description

Leicester City have appointed former Nottingham Forest boss Steve Cooper as their new manager on a three-year contract.

Cooper replaces Enzo Maresca, who left to join Chelsea earlier this summer, at the King Power Stadium after the club carried out a thorough process of due diligence and spoke to several candidates including Graham Potter.

Cooper had been out of work since being sacked by Nottingham Forest - Leicester's East Midlands rivals - last December, as the club languished in 17th place in the Premier League after a run of just one win in 13 games.

Before that, the 44-year-old guided Forest back into the top flight for the first time in 23 years and then kept them there.

Speaking to Leicester's official website, Cooper said: "I am really excited and proud to be appointed Leicester City's first-team manager.

"This is a fantastic club with a rich history and passionate supporters. I am excited to work with such a talented squad and I'm looking forward to the challenge of achieving our shared ambitions in the Premier League."

The Leicester job will not be without its challenges for Cooper, with the Foxes facing a possible points deduction and potentially needing to sell players to comply with the Premier League's profit and sustainability rules.

Leicester chairman Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha added: "We are delighted to welcome Steve to Leicester City. His vision for the team, including his ability to develop players and implement a dynamic style of play, is very much aligned with our aspirations for the club.

"As a leader, he has the ability to build on the strong relationship that has been forged between our fans and our team, strengthening a bond that will be vital to us re-establishing the club in the Premier League."

Cooper brings plenty of experience to Leicester, having also been in charge of the England U16 and U17 international sides - winning the World Cup with the latter in 2017 - before managing Championship side Swansea City from 2019-2021.

Carragher: Cooper needs 'serious backing'

Sky Sports' Jamie Carragher:

"I'm delighted for Steve. It's not easy when you lose your job in the Premier League to get another Premier League job. These are coveted jobs and managers from all over Europe and the world are looking to come here, so he'll be delighted to get that opportunity.

"It's a similar sort of area in terms of where Nottingham Forest are, so he knows the area well. He built up a great relationship with the Forest supporters and they were a little bit disappointed when he left.

"Hopefully for him, he can build that rapport with the Leicester fans because they might have a few problems at the start of the season.

"For Leicester to stay up, they all need to be together and Cooper will need serious backing from the board and also the supporters."

Heskey: Cooper's aim must be to stay in the Premier League

Speaking before Cooper's appointment, Leicester legend Emile Heskey says the manager's aim for the new season is simply to stay in the Premier League amid a limited capacity to sign new players.

Speaking at the launch of Husqvarna's Victory Dance campaign, Heskey insisted the best way to achieve that would be to continue the style of football implemented by Maresca.

Heskey told Sky Sports: "Leicester have gone down the route of having someone in Maresca, who revolutionised the way that we think as a club in the sense of the way that we play.

"It would be crazy to change everything around. Even when you look at U21s, they have started to implement a lot of the fundamentals that Maresca had.

"You would like to think the next manager would take that on and keep it going and play a lot of the younger lads, because the reality is I'm not sure how much we can spend to really get that squad up to par with what is needed to stay in the league.

"We ran through the Championship pretty much easily with a bit of a blip. If we can keep Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, that would be outstanding and unbelievable, because he's really the main player.

"The aim has to be to stay in the Premier League. We have to reset and work again. Staying in the league is key and then you build from there, especially if you're not able to spend the money you need to spend to get the squad up to par.

"The reality is that squad is pretty similar to the squad that came down. Yes, in the forward line Jamie Vardy has signed again, but who else have we got? That is a key position that needs to be rectified.

"I would say defensively, the centre-back position would be important as well and then possibly a midfielder."

Leicester fixtures: Foxes start against Spurs on MNF

Leicester will start their 2024/25 Premier League season with a Monday Night Football game at home against Tottenham, live on Sky Sports on August 19.

The newly-promoted Foxes then travel to Craven Cottage to face Fulham in their second game before returning to the King Power Stadium to take on Aston Villa on August 31.

Their first East Midlands derby against Nottingham Forest where Cooper could face his former club comes at home on October 26, with the return game taking place at the City Ground on May 10. Their former manager Maresca is due to return to the King Power Stadium with Chelsea on November 23.

Aston Villa have agreed a deal with Chelsea for left-back Ian Maatsen.

The fee for the 22-year-old is understood to be to be between £35m and £40m and it will rise with add-ons.

Maatsen will sign a six-year deal at Villa Park and Sky Sports News understands talks over personal terms are now underway, with initial discussions described as positive.

Maatsen had a £35m release clause which expired earlier this week, allowing Chelsea to negotiate the higher price they agreed with Villa.

Borussia Dortmund were keen on signing the left-back on a permanent deal after his successful loan spell at the Bundesliga club last season. They made offers but fell short of the original release clause.

He made 16 Bundesliga appearances for Dortmund, scoring two goals, and featured seven times for the German club in the Champions League, finding the net once.

Everton closing on Iroegbunam after Villa bid for Dobbin

On top of a deal for Maatsen, Villa want to sign Everton striker Lewis Dobbin and have made an offer for the 21-year-old, who made 12 Premier League appearances and scored one goal last season.

Everton, meanwhile, are closing in on the signing of Tim Iroegbunam from Aston Villa.

Talks for the midfielder are in the final stages and a deal is expected to be completed soon.

Both Everton and Villa are among the Premier League clubs under pressure to sell players to stay in line with Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

Juventus remain in talks over a deal for Douglas Luiz, but they cannot afford to meet his valuation up front, so the clubs are discussing which players could go in the opposite direction.

Weston McKennie and Samuel Iling-Junior are the Juventus players that have been discussed.

'He wants to play in CL' | How Villa beat Dortmund to Maatsen...

Sky Sports New chief reporter Kaveh Solhekol:

"Maatsen had a release clause in his contract, which Dortmund could have activated.
