Best CF since Kane: Spurs close in on signing "predatory" goal machine

Just over three weeks remain of this summer's transfer window, and while the signings of Archie Gray and Yang Min-Hyeok are undoubtedly exciting, they are not enough if Tottenham Hotspur are serious about climbing the Premier League table next season.

If Ange Postecoglou is going to lead his side into the Champions League at the second attempt, he'll need Daniel Levy and Co to sign him some first-team-level players in the coming weeks, and fortunately, that seems to be on the cards.

Recent reports have heavily linked the Lilywhites with one of the most inform strikers in England, who, if he were to join, would undeniably be the club's best striker since Harry Kane left last summer.

Tottenham Hotspur's striker search

According to a recent report from Football Insider, Tottenham have intensified their interest in Bournemouth's Dominic Solanke.

In fact, the report claims that the Lilywhites are now 'closing in' on the Englishman as they continue talks with the Cherries.

The South Coast club want £65m for their star striker, but Football Insider have revealed that the North Londoners are looking to bring that sum down by offering a larger initial payment.

Whatever the final fee, signing Solanke will be a costly endeavor for Spurs, but given his form last season, one worth making as he'd be their best striker since Kane.

Why Solanke would be Spurs' best striker since Kane

It's only been a year since Kane left Spurs, but the void he left in the squad was enormous, and try as they might, the Lilywhites' remaining attackers have not been able to genuinely fill it.

In his final campaign with the club, the Englishman racked up a frankly ridiculous 32 goals and five assists in 49 appearances, meaning he averaged a goal involvement once every 1.32 games despite the team struggling under Antonio Conte's tenure.

The closest a player got to the 31-year-old's tally of 32 goals last season was Son, but even then, he scored 17, or 15 fewer.

Moreover, the team's £60m striker, Richarlison, could only manage 12 goals in his 31 appearances for Postecoglou, and while he also provided four assists, it's evident that he's not a natural number nine.

In contrast, Solanke managed to rack up a seriously impressive tally of 21 goals in 42 appearances for an at-best mid-table Bournemouth side last season while also chipping in with four assists, equating to an average of a goal involvement every 1.68 games.

Ultimately, while the "predatory" 26-year-old, as dubbed by former professional Kris Boyd, would undoubtedly add a traditional goal threat that was missing from Posetcoglou's team last season and become the club's best centre-forward since the former captain, nobody expects him to reach the same world-class heights, as that would be unfair.

Fabrizio Romano says Tottenham are eyeing £12 million ace alongside Solanke

Reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano says Tottenham are eyeing a £12 million player alongside their pursuit of Bournemouth striker Dominic Solanke.

Spurs pursuing move for Dominic Solanke and other strikers

Manager Ange Postecoglou confirmed last week that Spurs are actively looking to sign a striker as a priority before deadline day, so it appears a new number nine is certainly one to watch in the coming weeks.

Postecoglou was heavily reliant on both Son Heung-min and Richarlison for the majority of Spurs' goal tally last season, with the duo scoring 29 between them in all competitions, but Postecoglou doesn't want a repeat of that for the 2024/2025 season - explaining how he would've certainly utilised Harry Kane if he hadn't decided to join Bayern Munich.

"If Harry would have stayed I definitely would have used him!," said Postecoglou on Tottenham's plans to sign a new striker.

"So I think for us what's more important is the type of striker we get. You know we play a certain way. We demand certain things from a physical perspective from the technical aspects of it that it's going be a striker that fits that mould.

"It's still the area of the park we're really probably the thinnest when I talk about squad-wise at the moment, so obviously that's a focus for us.

"Irrespective of the approach, I like to think I've always been pretty clear on what I want. I've had success for the most part of my career with transfers and, I mean, I thought last year's window was excellent."

According to Fabrizio Romano, Tottenham are in talks over signing Solanke from Bournemouth, and Spurs are pushing to seal a deal for the Englishman who scored 21 goals in all competitions for the Cherries last term.

However, he is by no means the only forward target on their radar, as fellow reliable reporter Ben Jacobs of GiveMeSport backs that Tottenham have a concrete interest in signing Brentford's Ivan Toney as well.

While bringing in a striker is a top priority, Spurs also may need to sign another right-back, with Emerson Royal thought to be closing in on a move to AC Milan.

Tottenham also thinking about signing Issa Kabore from Man City

Speaking to GiveMeSport, amid their high-profile chase for Solanke, Romano says that Tottenham are considering a move for Issa Kabore - who would come in to replace Emerson if the Brazilian does, at long last, seal his San Siro move.

“Tottenham would look to fill the gap, for sure, because they have Pedro Porro, but they would need one more player," said Romano.

“It's true that Kabore at Manchester City, former Luton Town player, is appreciated by Tottenham. But I’m told he is not the only option. So there are several possibilities being considered."

Club chiefs hold a real belief that one player wants to seal a marquee move to Tottenham this summer, with Ange Postecoglou and co still on the hunt for more arrivals ahead of the new Premier League season.

Postecoglou confirms Spurs are trying to sign striker before deadline day

Spurs' head coach has already admitted that the Lilywhites are actively pursuing a new striker before deadline day on August 30.

Last season, Postecoglou was heavily reliant on Son Heung-min, who finished 2023/2024 as their top scorer in all competitions with 17, but the 32-year-old is out of contract next year as things stand.

Richarlison scored 12 in all competitions as well, but it has been widely reported this week that technical director Johan Lange, chairman Daniel Levy and the wider recruitment team are looking for buyers.

The 27-year-old enjoyed a fantastic mid-season purple patch last term, scoring nine goals in eight league games from mid-December through to early February, but Spurs are still determined to sell Richarlison amid interest from the Saudi Pro League.

In terms of who could succeed him, it is rumoured that Tottenham could table a bid for Ivan Toney, as well as Bournemouth star Dominic Solanke, who Spurs are currently holding talks over signing (Fabrizio Romano).

"At Celtic, I had Kyogo, who was a sort of out and out number nine and in Japan, I've always had a striker," said Postecoglou on Spurs signing a new striker.

"It just depends, like last year we had to be a bit creative, it's fair to say. You know but if Harry would have stayed I definitely would have used him!

Irrespective of the approach, I like to think I've always been pretty clear on what I want. I've had success for the most part of my career with transfers and, I mean, I thought last year's window was excellent."

While Postecoglou didn't mention the likes of Toney or Solanke outright, an encouraging update has surfaced on the latter, with Tottenham's pursuit of new number nine beginning to ramp up.

Spurs chiefs convinced Solanke wants marquee move to Tottenham

As Postecoglou's side open talks for the £70,000-per-week Cherries marksman, GiveMeSport now claim that optimism over signing him is growing within the club.

Tottenham chiefs are convinced that Solanke wants to seal a "big-money" move to Spurs, coming after a terrific campaign where he netted 21 goals in all competitions for Bournemouth.

Levy and co are said to value the 26-year-old at around £50 million, though, which is significantly below Solanke's £65 million release clause. There is still work to be done in regards to agreeing a fee, but Spurs apparently hold a serious belief they won't run into any issues on the player's side.

Maddison repeat: Spurs want to sign "sublime" £20m Son rival

There are less than two weeks until the Premier League returns, and while every club has a lot to pay for, that feels especially true for Tottenham Hotspur.

The North Londoners enjoyed a mostly successful first season under Ange Postecoglou that ended in Europa League qualification, but with the teams around them strengthening, they need to get back into the Champions League next season.

To do that, Daniel Levy and Co need to provide the Australian with some fresh talent to improve the first team and reinforce the squad.

Luckily, that appears to be happening, as the latest player touted for a move to N17 this summer would be an excellent rival for Son Heung-min. Interestingly, he also has something in common with last summer's marquee signing, James Maddison.

Tottenham Hotspur transfer news

According to a recent report in Wednesday's print edition of The Chronicle via Leeds United News, Tottenham are interested in signing Norwich City star Jonathan Rowe.

The report claims the Lilywhites have been keeping tabs on the young winger for months and could rival Daniel Farke's side for his signature in the coming weeks.

However, just because he's playing in the Championship doesn't mean he'll be cheap to sign, as the Canaries supposedly value him between £15m to £20m.

It might not be the most eye-catching transfer, but Levy and Co should look to secure Rowe's services, as he'd be a great option alongside Son next season, and he has a couple of similarities with Maddison to boot.

Why Rowe would be a brilliant signing

Okay, so before we look into his statistics from last season that make him an appealing option to rival Son on the left wing, let's take a quick look at his similarities to Maddison.

The main one is that, like the Spurs midfielder, Rowe has caught the attention of the wider footballing community for the first time at Norwich City, wowing fans with his skill and trickery.

The North Londoners may have signed their number ten from Leicester City last year, but the Foxes picked him up from the Canaries in June 2018, when the Norfolk side were in the Championship.

The other similarity is that, like the former Foxes man, the Westminster-born talent made his debut for England's U21 side while playing at Carrow Road, and based on his performances last season, we wouldn't be surprised to see him win a senior cap should he make the move to N17.

So, with that cleared up, let's look at his form from last season. In 38 appearances for the Canaries, the "sublime" attacker, as dubbed by content creator HLTCO, scored 13 goals and provided four assists, meaning he averaged a goal involvement every 2.23 games.

This obviously can't match Son's remarkable return of 17 goals and ten assists in 36 games last season, but it would have been enough to make him the second most productive player in Postecoglou's squad by goals and assists.

Granted, the Championship is not the same level as the top flight, but given that he's still just 21 years old, it's a positive indication that he could be a quality option to bring off the bench when Son's tiring or even to start in place of the South Korean when he needs a rest.

Ultimately, Rowe is not a signing who's going to join the team and immediately displace the captain, but he's proven that he can be a handful for defenders, and while £20m is not cheap, it could prove value for money in the long run if he can go on to develop into Son's successor on the left.

Therefore, Levy and Co should do what they can to get ahead of Leeds and bring the talented winger to North London this summer.

Description

Tottenham chiefs are predicting that a £133,779-per-week member of Ange Postecoglou's squad will leave before deadline day, with the player now holding "positive" talks to depart Spurs.

Tottenham's summer clear out continues

So far, Postecoglou, chairman Daniel Levy and technical director Johan Lange have moved to restructure the squad by agreeing a host of outgoings.

Eric Dier, Ryan Sessegnon, Japhet Tanganga and Ivan Perisic were the first to leave N17, after their contracts expired, while Spurs also moved to terminate Tanguy Ndombele's deal one year before it was meant to run out.

The Frenchman moved back to his homeland on a free to OGC Nice, with Wales international defender following him soon afterward, completing a £10 million switch back to Leeds United in the Championship.

After a year of speculation surrounding his future, midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg joined Marseille on a season-long loan which will become permanent next summer. Bryan Gil and Alejo Veliz completed loan moves away themselves most recently, to Girona and Espanyol respectively, with Postecoglou sticking true to his suggestion that players will be sold this summer.

"We need change. Change has to happen," said Postecoglou on revamping the Tottenham squad this summer. "You can’t want to alter your course and expect the same people are going to be on that. It’s just not going to happen.

"We’ve had two windows and we’ve had some development of players, for sure, but when I say we’ve still got a long way to go, that’s what I’m talking about. It’s impossible to say you’re going to have drastic change and yet expect everyone to be on that journey."

Sergio Reguilon is also set to leave Tottenham in the coming weeks, with the left-back attracting some interest from Man United, among other sides like Juventus. This week, reports of a potential exit for striker Richarlison have greatly intensified too.

The Brazil international finished last season as the club's second top scorer in all competitions behind Son Heung-min, scoring 12 goals, but Spurs' pursuit of a talismanic new striker to replace Harry Kane has cast Richarlison's future in doubt - amid interest from Saudi Arabia.

Tottenham chiefs predict late Richarlison exit after positive talks

That is according to The Boot Room, who also write that Tottenham expect Richarlison to leave as the player holds "positive" talks over a move to Saudi.

It won't be an easy operation for PIF, though, as it is believed Spurs are demanding £60 million for the South American, who they signed for that same amount from Everton two summers ago.

Ipswich now eyeing "amazing" midfielder making £2m-a-year at top six club

As their official Premier League return approaches, Ipswich Town are yet to complete their summer business, with reports now linking the Tractor Boys to a top six midfielder who is expected to leave his current club.

Ipswich transfer news

Those at Portman Road have already welcomed as many as six fresh faces, with the most impressive being a permanent deal for star man Omari Hutchinson from Chelsea.

Following the winger has been the addition of high potential players like Jacob Greaves and Liam Delap along with top flight experience to the tune of Arijanet Muric and Ben Johnson, with full back Conor Townsend rounding off the business so far.

Speaking for the first time since completing the move, Townsend told Ipswich's official website: “I’m delighted to be here. To play in the Premier League again is a big challenge for me and this kind of opportunity doesn’t come around very often so I jumped at the chance.

“The move came around quite quickly and I’m excited to get started. I have had good conversations with the Manager and everyone speaks very highly of him, so I’m looking forward to getting started and working under him. I played against Ipswich twice last season and both were very tough games. What the team was able to achieve last season was special, so I’m excited to be a part of it now.”

The former West Bromwich Albion man may not be the final new face through the door, either. According to Matt Law of The Telegraph, Ipswich are now eyeing a move to sign Oliver Skipp, who is expected to leave Tottenham Hotspur this summer and has attracted interest from all three newly-promoted sides.

A player with plenty of Premier League experience these days, despite still being just 23 years old, Skipp would be some coup for the Tractor Boys before deadline day at the end of the month, though he may need to take a hit on his current £40k-a-week (over £2m per year) wages.

"Amazing" Skipp would be an intelligent signing

Skipp is not someone who will steal the headlines - his role simply isn't that of a marquee arrival. But what he will do is quietly work away in front of Kieran McKenna's backline to provide a platform for the likes of Hutchinson to thrive. What's more, outside of his role, the midfielder would bring invaluable experience from the top of English and European football, having made 77 Premier League appearances and 10 appearances across European competitions.

The 23-year-old has earned plenty of praise during his time at Spurs, including from former interim manager Cristian Stellini, who told BBC Sport after Skipp scored a sensational goal in a 2-0 win over Chelsea in 2023: “Brilliant moment [for Oliver Skipp] and one that we expected for one year because it has been one year he stayed far from the pitch. Last season with physical problems and this year for tactical decisions.

“He is ready because he has trained a lot and pushed himself. He is an amazing guy and great player. A player like Skippy has to understand that if he trains a lot he will have possibilities to show his value."

Spurs struck gold on "incredible" ace who could be sold for more than Kane

While fans understandably pay far more attention to the players their respective clubs might sign in the transfer window and the sagas often accompanying them, player exits can provide just as much drama.

Unfortunately for Tottenham Hotspur, they've been on the wrong end of a few major transfers over the years, be that Luka Modrić in the late 2000s, Gareth Bale in 2013 or, most recently, Harry Kane's move to Bayern Munich last summer.

The Englishman is a modern Spurs legend, but after almost a decade with the club, he did what some thought he'd never do and left the Premier League altogether in search of his first major trophy.

The only positive to come from his exit for the Lilywhites was that he earned them one of the biggest transfer fees in their history, although based on recent reports, they could be set to make even more on one of their current stars.

Harry Kane's transfer

When the final agreements were made and the last contracts signed, Kane's transfer cost Bayern an initial £82m, although the add-ons could reportedly see that figure soar past £100m, and based on his performances last season, we wouldn't be surprised if it already has.

Now, that might seem like an awful lot of money for a player who was 30 years old and entering the final year of his contract at the time, but given his incredible form for the seasons prior and his undeniable importance to the Lilywhites, it was probably fair value.

For example, in the season before he left, the England captain scored a whopping 32 goals and provided five assists in 49 appearances for a Spurs team that looked utterly hopeless at times under Antonio Conte.

Moreover, when you factor in that he went on to score 44 goals and provide 12 assists in just 45 games for Bayern last season, his transfer fee starts to look very reasonable indeed.

Overall, while it was arguably fair value, Kane's transfer fee was undeniably sizeable.

However, according to recent reports, a player in Postecoglou's squad could dwarf it if he were sold this summer.

Cristian Romero's valuation in 2024

Yes, the player in question is one of Tottenham's co-vice captains, Cristian Romero.

The World Cup winner was reportedly of interest to European giants Real Madrid earlier this summer, but little seemed to come from said interest.

However, according to Paul O'Keefe on the Last Word on Spurs Podcast (via TEAMtalk), Madrid are still keen on the talented centre-back but have been told that they'll need to make a mammoth offer of £150m to secure his services.

If this were to happen, it would instantly be the biggest transfer in the history of the Premier League, and while it's an undeniably ludicrous sum of money, it reflects how important the 26-year-old is to the North Londoners.

Since making his £42m move from Serie A side Atalanta in August 2021, the "incredible" defender, as journalist Alasdair Gold dubbed him, has made 98 appearances for the Lilywhites, in which he's scored six goals and provided one assist.

He's also been described as "the best defender in the world" by Lionel Messi, and if there is a player who knows a thing or two about defenders - and how to embarrass them - it's probably him.

Ultimately, while Bale and Kane are the two most expensive outgoings in Spurs' history, there is a chance, albeit a small one, that Romero could surpass them this summer. That said, Tottenham's plan to dissuade Madrid with an enormous asking price will probably work.

Potential bid: Spurs target "monster" £50m Solanke upgrade

It's been a relatively positive summer for Tottenham Hotspur so far this year, with four wins out of five in pre-season and the progressive signings of Archie Gray and South Korean youngster Yang Min-Hyeok.

However, if Ange Postecoglou is going to achieve his goals in North London and lead the club back up the Premier League table next season, he will need more firepower in his team.

The good news is that Daniel Levy and Co seem to share this opinion. Over the last week or so, the club has been linked to several exciting strikers, particularly Bournemouth's Dominic Solanke.

However, recent reports have suggested the North Londoners are just as interested in another quality number nine who may be an upgrade on the Cherries ace.

Tottenham Hotspur striker search

According to a recent report from TEAMtalk, alongside Solanke, Tottenham are currently 'chasing' Brentford's Ivan Toney this summer.

The report claims that the Bees ace is available 'at the right price' and that the Lilywhites could lodge a bid for the striker in the coming weeks.

There is no mention of how much he could cost the North Londoners, but reports from earlier this summer revealed that, due to his contract expiring next year, he could be available for £50m or less.

It would still require a significant fee, but given Toney's record in the Premier League, he's worth splashing the cash on, and he'd be a better signing than Solanke.

How Toney compares to Solanke

So, if Tottenham's choice this summer is between Toney and Solanke, who should they sign? And how do they compare?

Well, the pair's output over the last couple of seasons is a little hard to compare given the Brentford star's eight-month betting ban last season, but even so, when it comes down to goal involvements per appearance, he comfortably beats out the Cherries ace.

For example, when combining the last two campaigns, the "unplayable" 28-year-old, as dubbed by Alan Shearer, has scored 25 goals and provided seven assists in 52 appearances, which equates to an impressive average of a goal involvement every 1.62 games, despite coming back into last season without any real preparation.

In contrast, the former Chelsea ace has scored 28 goals and provided 11 assists in 77 appearances, equating to an average goal involvement every 1.97 games.

Okay, how about their underlying numbers across the last two seasons, then? Is it another easy win for the Brentford ace when we look under the hood?

Indeed, in every relevant metric, the Northampton-born "monster," as dubbed by manager Thomas Frank, comes out ahead, including non-penalty expected goals plus assists, actual non-penalty goals plus assists.

He's also ahead for progressive passes and carries, highlighting his ability to get possession up the pitch, shots and shots on target, shot and goal-creating actions and aerial duels won, all per 90.

A carry is considered progressive if the ball is moved towards the opponent's goal at least 10 yards from its starting point or is carried into the penalty area.

Ultimately, while both strikers would surely bring more goals to Spurs next season, Toney would be the better signing. Even when including his entirely unusual campaign last season, he comes out ahead of Solanke in every measurable comparison.

Therefore, Levy and Co must do what they can to bring the Brentford star to N17 this summer.

Talks underway: Spurs pushing for "dream" Johnson teammate in £60m star

Description

The upcoming season is set to be a massive one for Tottenham Hotspur as Ange Postecoglou looks to build on his first year in the hot seat and lead the North Londoners back into the Champions League.

However, with the clubs in and around the Lilywhites strengthening this summer, Daniel Levy and Co must act swiftly to ensure they bring in some more quality additions to the first team before the transfer window slams shut.

The good news is that it appears as if that's precisely what they're doing, as the latest star touted for a move to N17 would be a real game-changer and someone who could form a brilliant partnership with one of last summer's pricey signings, Brennan Johnson.

Tottenham Hotspur transfer news

According to a recent report from transfers expert Fabrizio Romano, Tottenham are "pushing" to secure a deal for Bournemouth striker Dominic Solanke.

The Italian has claimed that the clubs are currently negotiating a potential deal following the "green light" from the Englishman.

Romano does not mention a potential price, but a separate report late last week revealed that the Cherries may be willing to accept £60m for their star striker this summer.

Signing Solanke would undoubtedly represent a significant investment for Tottenham, but given his incredible form last season and the fact that he could be brilliant alongside Johnson, it may be one worth making.

Why Solanke would be a great signing for Johnson

So, the reason Solanke would be a "dream" signing, as dubbed by former manager Gary O'Neil, for both Tottenham and Johnson, specifically, is the same: his output.

Postecoglou had his team playing some tremendously entertaining attacking football at points last season, but come the end of the campaign, six teams had scored more goals than them, which indicates that there is a finishing problem within the squad.

This problem is borne out in the squad's statistics, as out of the entire team, only Son Heung-min and Richarlison scored over ten goals, despite the plethora of talented wingers in the team, such as the former Nottingham Forest ace.

So, if the North Londoners could introduce a clinical finisher into the team, they may see their collective goal tally and the assist tally of their creative players increase, and the Cherries ace could be that clinical number nine.

For example, in his 42 appearances for the South Coast club last season, he scored 21 goals and provided four assists, meaning he averaged a goal involvement every 1.68 games.

This tally would have made him Spurs' top goalscorer and second most productive player overall, so imagine how much more effective he would've been playing alongside a player like Johnson, who managed to rack up ten assists despite his teammates' finishing problems.

Ultimately, signing Solanke is going to cost Tottenham a pretty penny, but to make the most out of Postecoglou's progressive system, they need a clear focal point in attack, and that is precisely what the Englishman would provide them. Therefore, Levy and Co should do everything possible to get this deal over the line.

Lange could table Spurs bids for both Solanke and £60m "playmaker" forward

Tottenham, lead by transfer chief and technical director Johan Lange this window, could soon table bids for both Bournemouth star Dominic Solanke and another £60 million forward.

Spurs in market for new striker to replace Kane and Richarlison

Despite his impressive mid-season purple patch, and how he ended 2023/2024 as Spurs' second top scorer behind Son Heung-min, it is believed chairman Daniel Levy is ready to part company with Richarlison - just two years after signing him from Everton for around £60 million.

Reliable transfer journalist Ben Jacobs of GiveMeSport shared news last week that Tottenham are determined to find a buyer for Richarlison this window, with Fabrizio Romano then claiming the Lilywhites are actively pursuing a new number nine.

Ange Postecoglou could see a new winger arrive at N17 before deadline day on August 30 as well, but the consensus is that bringing in a fresh centre-forward option is the priority for Spurs right now, leading to their interest in Bournemouth's Solanke.

Postecoglou is said to be driving a Spurs move for Solanke, with the Englishman also open to making the switch to north London (GiveMeSport). The Cherries ace scored 21 goals in 42 appearances across all competitions for Bournemouth last season, standing out as Andoni Iraola's star player.

His contract has a £65 million release clause, as widely reported, so it will be interesting to see if Spurs will come close to matching that figure or attempt a deal for the 26-year-old at a far lesser price.

While Solanke hit double figures last season and has proven Premier League pedigree, he is by no means the only option considered to bolster Tottenham's forward line. As the search continues for a striker who can replace both Harry Kane and potentially Richarlison, another player they continue to admire is Brentford's Ivan Toney.

The England international scored 20 league goals under Thomas Frank the season before last, and he's said to be valued at around £60 million according to some reports.

Tottenham could make bids for both Solanke and Toney

According to TEAMtalk and journalist Rudy Galetti, Tottenham could table bids for both Solanke and Toney before deadline day, as Lange attempts to get a prolific new talisman over the line.

There have been suggestions that Toney is very keen on a move to Spurs this summer, so this could be a deal worth pursuing, especially as his contract expires just next year - which could give Postecoglou's side some leverage in negotiations.
