Timo Werner linked with MLS move as Tottenham Hotspur future confirmed - The Mirror US
Description

Timo Werner’s latest Premier League excursion appears to be coming to a grinding halt with Tottenham Hotspur not looking to make his loan move from RB Leipzig permanent at the end of the current season.

The 29-year-old Champions League winner has struggled to leave his mark during his sole season with Spurs, scoring just one goal in 27 appearances for Ange Postecoglou's side before recently being dropped altogether - with his most recent league appearance having come in February.

Now with his fate with Spurs seemingly sealed, as first reported by Fabrizio Romano, Werner is now on the lookout for a new challenge, with a return to Leipzig also seemingly off the table.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Werner has already been linked with a move to the New York Red Bulls - another team in the energy drink company’s sporting portfolio, according to Footmercato. With talks between Werner and New York already said to be underway, and with the German under contract with Leipzig for a further season, a simple loan move between the sister clubs could be a quick and painless solution to his dilemma.

This would be following an existing precedent between the clubs, with Emil Forsberg having joined New York from Leipzig ahead of the 2024 season for €3 million. The Swedish international’s move proved a success, having already scored 14 goals and provided three assists in 31 games as the club captain.

There, he plays alongside another familiar face to Premier League and Bundesliga fans - forward Eric-Maxim Choupo-Moting. The Cameroon forward joined as a free agent in January 2025, having most recently played for Bayern Munich up until the summer of 2024.

While his MLS career is still young, the 36-year-old former Paris Saint-Germain star has already scored three goals in just seven games for New York.

The Red Bulls are currently eighth in the Eastern Conference after seven games, having gone 3-2-2 under head coach Sandro Schwarz to start the season. But while Werner could provide a welcome boost up front alongside Coupo-Moting, he may not be the only ex-Bundesliga star on the way to the Big Apple.

Bayern and Germany legend Thomas Muller recently confirmed that he is set to leave Bavaria at the conclusion of this season. Following news of his imminent departure, ex-teammate Choupo-Moting was quick to call on the 35-year-old to join him in New York.

Choupo-Moting, who joined the Red Bulls after his Bayern career came to a close in 2024. “He’s welcome here,” he said, according to Kicker via @iMiaSanMia. “Thomas, you already speak English, so…

“Jokes aside, I have no idea [what Thomas will do]. Thomas is a Bayern legend, so I’d be happy for him if he continues there. But if he wants to make this step, we’ll see. Thomas, I’m watching you.”

New York currently has just one Designated Player roster spot available alongside Choupo-Moting and Forsberg, so in order to sign both Werner and Muller, either one of their existing stars would need to leave or one of their potentially inbound stars would have to agree to a significantly lower salary than they’d likely receive elsewhere.

Tottenham Hotspur eyes USMNT star who played for Arsenal in double transfer deal

Just a year and a half into his Serie A career, U.S. Men’s National Team midfielder Yunus Musah is being linked with a move away from AC Milan. The former Arsenal youngster is attracting interest from another London-based Premier League side alongside his Rossoneri teammate, Fikayo Tomori.

Both are being eyed up by Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham Hotspur, who are currently languishing in 14th during what is proving to be a brutally injury-riddled season. However, while a move for Tomori seems possible, convincing Milan to part ways with Musah could prove a challenge.

After a slow start to the season under then-head coach Paulo Fonseca, 22-year-old Musah has become a regular in the lineup under Sergio Conceicao, deployed as both a central midfielder and down the right wing. And even though the recent signing of Joao Felix from Chelsea could have been seen as a bad omen for Musah, or his USMNT teammate Christian Pulisic given their positional similarities, both have continued to feature for Milan in recent games.

All in all, Musah has made 28 appearances this season for Milan, providing two assists while a goal continues to elude him. But while he hasn’t made the scoresheet in Italy this season, he has for his country.

In October, Musah scored his first-ever goal for the USMNT in October during their 2-0 win against Panama, in what was former Tottenham head coach Mauricio Pochettino’s first game in charge. But as it turns out, Pochettino was already well aware of Musah’s talents, having contemplated signing him during his Chelsea tenure.

“He was one of the players under consideration when he was at Valencia, so before the Milan move, one of the players he considered for his project at Chelsea,” Fabrizio Romano said in September.

News of Tottenham's interest in Musah was first reported by Milan Live.

As for Tottenham’s other Milan target, England defender Tomori declined offers from both Juventus and Spurs in January. This comes as somewhat of a surprise given his struggle to maintain a starting role along with the recent signing of fellow England defender Kyle Walker, who is capable of playing at the heart of a back line, along with his usual role of right back.

Tomori and Walker wound up playing alongside one another in Milan’s most recent game - a 1-0 loss in the first leg of their Champions League play-off tie with Dutch side Feyenoord. Tomori came on as a substitute for the final 30 minutes for Malick Thiaw at the same time Pulisic was pulled having failed to find a spark on a damp night in the Netherlands.

Meanwhile, Musah was suspended after being sent off in their final Group Stage game against Dinamo Zagreb - where Milan also lost, 2-1.

Next up for the seventh-placed Serie A side is an away game at struggling Verona on Saturday, before Feyenoord heads to the San Siro on February 18 as they look to seal their place in the Round of 16.

Tottenham Hotspur fans ruthlessly taunted by Jamie Vardy on Premier League return

Veteran striker Jamie Vardy mercilessly mocked Tottenham fans over their team's inability to win a Premier League title after scoring against Ange Postecoglou's team and securing a draw for Leicester.

Vardy led the Foxes to the title in the 2015/2016 season, during which Spurs were their primary competitors for much of the time. However, the London team eventually fell behind, finishing third, while Vardy and Leicester celebrated an extraordinary win.

On Monday night, he once again proved to be their nemesis when Postecoglou brought his team to the King Power Stadium for their first Premier League match of the new season. The visitors dominated most of the game and scored the opening goal through Pedro Porro just before the half-hour mark.

However, Spurs couldn't find a second goal, allowing Vardy to equalize 12 minutes into the second half. The Leicester captain lost his man, with Abdul Fatawu crossing in for him to head home at the back post.

There is evidently no love lost between Vardy and Spurs, a fact that the 37-year-old made clear as he was substituted with 11 minutes remaining. Before heading to the sideline, Vardy turned to the corner of the stadium where the Spurs fans were watching the game.

Vardy gestured towards the Premier League badge on his shirt, then pointed to his chest and held up a single finger, indicating his title win. He then directed his attention to the Spurs fans, holding up a hand formed into a zero, underlining Tottenham's lack of Premier League victories.

After the match, Vardy downplayed his actions, stating it's 'part of football'. He also revealed that his Leicester team conducted a half-time review in an attempt to change the course of the game.

"You take a bit of stick during the game, but it's part of football. As long as they can take it when I'm giving it back, that's all that matters," Vardy shared with Sky Sports.

"We just had a little chat among ourselves at half-time. Tottenham are a really good team but we gave them too much respect and we started getting after them and it changed the momentum. We said when it got to 40 minutes make sure you go in not conceding any more. We'll take the point and move on now.

"I was as fit as a fiddle until I got to about 65 minutes, if I'm honest! I wouldn't say I am doing anything differently playing-wise. Probably adapted a bit by dropping in but I think the main thing is I am looking after myself recovery-wise to the maximum."

Vardy, who had been nursing an injury for most of the pre-season, only declared himself fit to Leicester manager Steve Cooper this week. Liverpool icon Jamie Carragher was thrilled that Vardy was in shape to start and praised his performance.

Speaking to Sky Sports, he said: "Thank god Jamie Vardy went to see Steve Cooper and say he was ready to play. Never change, Jamie Vardy. It was chalk and cheese the second half and that's because there was energy in the stadium and that came from them getting at Tottenham more."
