Premier League action for Saturday, Nov. 23 wraps up with a tilt between Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur at Etihad Stadium in Manchester, England.

The match is scheduled to start at 12:30 p.m. EST and will be broadcast on NBC and NBC Universo. Fans looking to watch can do so through FuboTV, which offers a free trial and $30 off your first month, or DirecTV Stream, which also offers a free trial. Manchester City has lost four consecutive matches across competitions. So despite still being second on the table with 23 points, the 7-2-2 record feels concerning as Liverpool sits atop the table at 9-1-1.

Tottenham is 5-1-5 and sits 10th on the table. It enters the day even with Brentford in record and with 16 points, but with a major advantage in goal differential, and only 2 points behind a trio of squads.

Can Guardiola turn around Man City amid the worst losing run of his coaching career?

MANCHESTER, England (AP) — Pep Guardiola is widely expected to sign a new contract at Manchester City, giving him a chance to extend his unprecedented dominance of the English Premier League.

His first priority, however, is to arrest the worst losing streak of his managerial career.

Four straight losses in all competitions see four-time defending champion City trail leader Liverpool by five points in England’s top flight.

City is out of the English League Cup and has been humbled in the Champions League by a 4-1 loss to Sporting Lisbon in one of Ruben Amorim’s final acts before taking over Manchester United.

Guardiola’s rule appears to be under threat.

But we’ve been here before.

City’s success under Guardiola — winning six of the last seven leagues and becoming the first English team to claim four in a row — has been characterized by its ability to go on remarkable winning runs that have eventually killed the challenge of rivals.

Whether Guardiola’s current team — with key players aging and or injured — has the ability to go again, is unclear. And anything other than victory against Tottenham on Saturday would raise more questions about City’s title credentials.

Squad depth

Backed by the ruling family of Abu Dhabi, City has been able to spend billions of dollars signing the world’s best players. But Guardiola’s squad has been stretched by injuries to Ballon d’Or winner Rodri and Kevin De Bruyne.

In De Bruyne and Kyle Walker, 33 and 34 respectively, there are doubts about their ability to maintain the levels they have in the past. Walker, once so dominant at right back, has started only six games this season. City, meanwhile, has looked vulnerable in defense, keeping just five clean sheets in 18 games.

De Bruyne’s injuries have been mounting. After being sidelined for much of last season, he’s made only five starts this term.

Phil Foden has also struggled replicate the form that saw him named footballer of the year last season, with three goals in 14 games.

Winners' fatigue

Guardiola famously questioned his players' title credentials midway through the treble-winning year of 2022-23, describing City as a “happy flowers” team. It challenged them to raise their game in the face of a challenge from Arsenal, which led the standings for much of that campaign.

It worked, with City going on to win the Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup.

With another league title secured last term, it is a constant challenge for dominant teams to find the hunger to reach new heights, even if Guardiola’s passion is as evident as ever.

Rivals

New Liverpool coach Arne Slot has taken the fight to Guardiola right from the start.

Liverpool leads the way in the Premier League and the Champions League, with Slot winning 15 of his first 17 games since succeeding Jurgen Klopp in the offseason.

Arsenal under Guardiola’s former assistant Mikel Arteta was runner-up to City in the last two years. Though it has faltered this season, it is just four points behind City in fourth.

Chelsea is third, ahead of Arsenal on goal difference, and under another of Guardiola’s former assistants, Enzo Maresca. Chelsea looks like it could push towards the top of the standings.

Just four points separate third and 13th, and the early weeks of the campaign suggest a broad spread of quality across the league, perhaps accounting for points being dropped by the likes of City and Arsenal.

Track record

This is not the first time City has run into trouble in a campaign’s early stages.

Losing to Aston Villa 1-0 last December marked a run of four games without a win in the league. It turned out to be the last time Guardiola’s team lost in the league all season.

In February last year, City lost to Tottenham 1-0 and was five points adrift of leader Arsenal. It was unbeaten in its next 16 league games and also went on the win the treble.

A five-point gap to Liverpool in November looks far less daunting by comparison.

Arsenal has a discipline issue and it could cost the team the Premier League title

Mikel Arteta felt he had no choice.

The Arsenal manager saw his right back Ben White receive a yellow card in the first half of the Champions League game against Shakhtar Donetsk on Tuesday, and quickly came to a decision.

White needed to be removed at halftime.

“We have played enough with 10 men in the recent period,” Arteta said with a smirk.

It is becoming abundantly clear: Arsenal has a discipline problem — and it might yet cost Arteta’s team a shot at the English Premier League title.

Arsenal has had three players sent off in the opening eight rounds of a league campaign that is seeing yellow cards being dished out at an unprecedented rate.

It continues something of a running theme under Arteta. Since he arrived as its manager in late 2019, Arsenal has collected 18 red cards in the Premier League — five more than the next team.

Tellingly for Arteta, the only games where Arsenal dropped points this season — the 1-1 home draw with Brighton, the 2-2 away draw at Manchester City and the 2-0 loss at Bournemouth on Saturday — came when the team had a player dismissed.

“We cannot continue to play with 10 men, especially at this level. You see how we struggled,” Arteta said this week. “We need to eradicate it, it’s clear. Why, the reason, how — it doesn’t matter. We have to focus that it has to happen.”

It particularly has to be happen on Sunday, when Liverpool visits Emirates Stadium in the headline match of the league’s ninth round.

Liverpool is in first place, one point ahead of second-placed City and four clear of third-placed Arsenal. A win would put Liverpool seven points clear of Arsenal already — hardly an insurmountable deficit at this stage but one which would leave Arteta’s players with little wiggle room. Perhaps more importantly, it would likely leave Arsenal six points behind defending champion City, which is expected to swat aside winless Southampton on Saturday.

Arsenal’s disciplinary issues come at the start of a season that has seen an average of 5.1 yellow cards awarded per game so far, according to league statistics supplier Opta.

That is far more than any previous Premier League, says Opta, which points out that last season’s 4.2 yellows per game was a new record — surpassing 3.7 per game in the 1998-99 season.

Two of Arsenal’s dismissals — Declan Rice against Brighton and Leandro Trossard against City — saw the players in question each collect two yellow cards, the second for time-wasting by kicking the ball away.

William Saliba was handed a straight red against Bournemouth for bringing down Evanilson near the halfway line and denying what was adjudged to be a goal-scoring opportunity.

Saliba, perhaps Arteta’s most important defender, will miss the Liverpool match as a result, at a time when Arsenal is already without captain Martin Odegaard (ankle) and might also be missing star winger Bukayo Saka (hamstring) and summer signing Riccardo Calafiori, who came off against Shakhtar with a twisted knee.

Liverpool will arrive on the back of 11 wins from its first 12 games in all competitions under new manager Arne Slot. That run contains six straight away victories, which is a club record for the start of a single campaign.

“Arteta has done an amazing job in the last few years,” Slot said after Liverpool’s 1-0 win at Leipzig on Wednesday, “and we have to be on top of our game to get a result.”

Tuchel’s hiring by England sparks dismay and resignation among British soccer coaches

LONDON (AP) — British soccer managers reacted with disappointment and a degree of resignation on Thursday after a German, Thomas Tuchel, was hired to take charge of England ahead of a homegrown coach.

Football Association chief executive Mark Bullingham said some English managers — he didn’t disclose the precise number — were interviewed for the role from a shortlist of “approximately” 10 names. Tuchel was ultimately deemed to be the best hope of leading England to a first major title since the 1966 World Cup.

Tuchel, the former Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich manager, is the third overseas coach — after the late Sven-Goran Eriksson of Sweden (2001-06) and Fabio Capello of Italy (2007-12) — to be appointed to lead England’s men’s team this century.

Russell Martin, one of six managers from Britain and Ireland currently leading teams in the Premier League, said there were “loads of English coaches really capable of doing the job as well.”

“Maybe English managers aren’t given enough credit,” the Southampton manager said, “or maybe they are deemed not good enough by the most important people.”

Martin, who got his chance in the Premier League after getting promoted with Southampton last season, questioned the effectiveness of the much-hyped coaching pathway at England’s national training center at St. George’s Park.

“It’s going to cause a lot of interesting discussion and conversation, especially at the FA, because we have a well-renowned coaching education system that people come from far and wide to do, and then we can’t appoint someone from that,” said Martin, an England-born former Scotland international.

Everton’s English manager Sean Dyche, who confirmed he wasn’t interviewed by the FA, said it was “a reality of the modern game” after homegrown coaches were overlooked for the vacancy.

And Leicester manager Steve Cooper, a Welshman who led England to the title at the Under-17 World Cup in 2017, said he hoped British coaches will be ranked among the world’s best “over the course of time.”

“In the meantime, any opportunity we are given we have to take them and do a good job,” said Cooper, who has also coached Nottingham Forest in the Premier League. “Until we do that on a regular basis maybe we shouldn’t say so much.

“I really believe in British culture. I believe in the coaching education pathway as well.”

Everton reaches agreement with Texas-based Friedkin Group over purchase of the Premier League club

Everton’s long-running takeover saga could soon be over after the struggling Premier League team reached an agreement Monday with the Texas-based Friedkin Group over the purchase of the club.

“We look forward to providing stability to the club, and sharing our vision for its future,” the group said in a statement jointly issued with Everton, which is in 19th place in the 20-team English top flight.

Fronted by Dan Friedkin and his son, Ryan, the group is a consortium of investments in automotive, entertainment, hospitality and sports which includes Italian soccer club Roma in its portfolio. The Friedkins made a fortune distributing Toyotas in Texas.

The group reached an agreement in principle in June to buy the 94% stake of Everton’s majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri, but talks were called off a month later. Since then, Everton has been in negotiations with American businessman John Textor, who said at the start of this month he had an exclusivity agreement with the club that was due to expire on Nov. 30.

Earlier this year, a proposed takeover by 777 Partners collapsed as Everton — a nine-time English champion and an ever-present in the top division since 1954 — and Moshiri struggled to find either a buyer or significant outside investment.

Now, Everton and the Friedkin Group said they have reached agreement “over the terms of the sale” of Moshiri’s stake, adding that the deal is subject to approval from English soccer authorities.

“We are pleased to have reached an agreement to become custodians of this iconic football club,” the group said.

Textor’s attempts to purchase Everton were impeded by the fact that he is also a part-owner of fellow Premier League team Crystal Palace. It is forbidden to have a stake in two Premier League clubs at the same time, so Textor has been seeking to sell his shares.

Everton, however, has been hemorrhaging money on a monthly basis and needs to quickly find a buyer, especially with the team leaving its long-term home of Goodison Park at the end of this season and moving into a new, state-of-the-art stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock that is close to completion.

The BBC reported Monday that the Friedkin Group is already a lender to the club after injecting 200 million pounds ($265 million) and that this could be converted into equity as part of any deal. It has been reported that the group may demand the money back if any takeover attempt failed.

The Friedkins have never spoken publicly in the four years since they purchased Roma and are unpopular with supporters at the moment after firing Daniele De Rossi, the club’s beloved former captain, as coach last week and not fully explaining why.

Everton is one of England’s most storied clubs but hasn’t won a major trophy since 1995 and has battled against relegation to the second-tier Championship in recent years, staying up only the final day of the season in the 2022-23 season.
