How does the Magpies fair play record compare to their Premier League rivals after the first month of the season?

It can be difficult trying to assess Newcastle United’s start to the new season.

After narrowly missing out on an immediate return to European competition last season, Eddie Howe’s side have firmly set their sights on a top six place during the current campaign and results, so far, have been positive. Despite going down to ten men inside the opening half-hour of their opening day home game with Southampton, the Magpies battled their way to a 1-0 win thanks to a goal from Brazilian midfielder Joelinton. There was an element of fortune about the 1-1 draw earned in a first away day of the season at Bournemouth but the Magpies returned to winning ways as Alexander Isak and Harvey Barnes both netted in a 2-1 home victory against Tottenham Hotspur.

United have also progressed into the third round of the Carabao Cup after they came through a penalty shoot-out against Premier League rivals Nottingham Forest to set up a trip to League Two club AFC Wimbledon in the next round. It would be safe to say, despite the positive results, United have not really hit their stride in terms of performances - but there have been hints of some elements of the style and intensity Howe’s men showed during the season when they broke into the top four and secured a first Champions League campaign in two decades.

The Magpies high-pressure, high energy style that brought success during that season can come at a cost with several players picking up bookings and red cards during the opening month of the new season - but how do Howe’s side currently rank in the Premier League’s fair play table?

Newcastle United beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 at St James’ Park on Sunday afternoon to continue their unbeaten start to the new season.

Goals from Harvey Barnes and Alexander Isak either side of a Dan Burn own goal saw The Magpies claim victory over Spurs and make it seven points from their opening three Premier League matches.

Here are five talking points from the match...

After his impressive return to action against Nottingham Forest in the Carabao Cup, there was plenty of anticipation surrounding Sandro Tonali’s first St James’ Park matchday appearance in more than 10 months. Tonali was named on the bench for the match as Eddie Howe made five changes from the side that beat Forest on penalties at the City Ground.

Tino Livramento, Lloyd Kelly, Bruno Guimaraes, Sean Longstaff and Anthony Gordon came back into the side. Joe Willock missed the match due to a thigh injury while goalkeeper Martin Dubravka returned on the bench following a concussion.

Prior to the match, Wor Flags put on a display dedicated to Tonali in the Gallowgate End of St James’ Park. Images of Tonali, the Italian tricolour and a message that read ‘midfield maestro, from Milano,’ were presented before the match.

There was even a small flag referencing Tonali’s now iconic Wetherspoons table reservation made last year following his debut goal in a 5-1 win over Aston Villa.

Speaking about the display, head coach Eddie Howe said: "I didn't know that was going to happen with the wall of flags so it was a brilliant surprise - visually it was incredible," said Howe.

"Sandro was emotional and his performance when he came on was outstanding. It was just amazing from the fans, it does not surprise me, but it's so important that the relationship between players and supporters is so strong.

"It was very different to [him coming on in the] Nottingham Forest game. We were in need of a spark and I thought he gave us that."

Yasir Al-Rumayyan in attendance

In addition to Tonali, it was also a St James’ Park return for club chairman and PIF governor Yasir Al-Rumayyan for the first time this season. After a turbulent summer of the pitch for Newcastle and a difficult transfer window, it was a timely arrival for Al-Rumayyan, who was keen to speak with key figures at St James’ Park.

Al-Rumayyan was joined at St James’ Park by PIF officials Asmaa Rezeeq and Jacobo Solis. Following the win over Spurs, Howe confirmed that he would speak with the chairman. Conversations are understood to have taken place at St James’ Park long after the full-time whistle and into Sunday evening.

Alexander Isak gets off the mark for the season

It had been a frustrating start to the season for last season’s top scorer Alexander Isak as he went into Sunday’s match having failed to score in each of his opening three matches. But the 24-year-old boasts an impressive record against Spurs with a brace in each of his last two appearances against the North London club at St James’ Park.

Isak struggled at times in the opening matches of the season with few chances falling his way and the ones that did he wasn’t taking. After scoring 25 goals for The Magpies last season, an extended run without scoring while Callum Wilson remains out injured would have been a concern.

But the Swede almost broke his scoring duck for the season in spectacular fashion as he dispossessed Son Heung Min by the corner flag and proceeded to attempt an audacious angled chip that looped over Guglielmo Vicario and clipped back off the crossbar.

What was then becoming a frustrating afternoon for Isak peaked with one of the easiest goals he’ll score for Newcastle after Joelinton’s turn and splitting pass to release Jacob Murphy. Isak showed good pace and movement to get alongside Murphy without breaking the offside trap and allowing himself a simple tap into an empty net following unselfish work from his teammate.

After the game, Isak was honest in his assessment.

“It is my first goal for the season so it's a good feeling that I score that one and we get the win,” he told Sky Sports. “Generally we weren't expecting to have too much of the ball. We wanted to be dangerous on the counter-attack. It wasn't the most beautiful game from our side but we defended really well and scored two so that's good.

"You always have to be concentrated. It's easy to get frustrated. It was a tough game and tough for me - I wasn't at my sharpest. Jacob Murphy had a great assist, very selfless, so it was just being in the right place.”

Winning what matters to Newcastle United

For large spells of the game, it was another difficult afternoon for Newcastle as they were pegged back by Spurs who looked the more likely side to go on and win following Dan Burn’s almost comical own goal as he blasted the ball into the roof of the net as he attempted to clear Brennan Johnson’s effort on the line although it looked to be heading wide.

Isak’s goal came very much against the run of play but Howe’s ability to make changes and bring on a player with the pace and energy of Murphy ultimately paid dividends despite it being questioned at the time with Harvey Barnes making way.

Howe admitted his side are not playing to the levels he would like and fitness remains a concern as four games in Newcastle are still yet to reach top gear. But after such a difficult summer, Sunday’s win was a timely reminder of what really matters at Newcastle and that’s results on the pitch.

Every decision made at the club is geared towards that in some way. And picking up another win when not at your best can only be a good sign.

Newcastle United’s ‘best’ start to the season in over a decade

While performances have left a lot to be desired in the opening month of the season, Newcastle head into the international break having enjoyed their best start to a campaign since the 2011-12 season - on paper at least.

Seven points out of a possible nine as well as progressing to the third round of the Carabao Cup is a near perfect start for Howe’s side, even if they haven’t necessarily passed the ‘eye-test’ so far.

For context, it took The Magpies six games to accumulate at least seven points in both the 2023-24 and 2022-23 seasons and 14 games to reach that total the season prior.

It’s not enough to make the doubts go away, but it’s certainly a positive way to be heading into the first international break of the season.

Bruno Guimaraes admitted there was room for improvement for Newcastle United as the club’s unbeaten start to the season continued.

Guimaraes captained Newcastle to a 2-1 win against Tottenham Hotspur at St James’ Park on Sunday as goals from Harvey Barnes and Alexander Isak either side of a Dan Burn own goal claimed another three points. It’s now seven points from nine in the Premier League and progress to the Carabao Cup third round heading into the international break.

The Brazilian is yet to lose a game as Newcastle captain with the side making their best start to a season before the September break since the 2011-12 campaign.

Following the match, Guimaraes took to social media to share his thoughts.

He wrote: “Great victory today! Very happy for our team. We know we can improve, and we will work on that!

“Huge win! See you after the break. Once again, thank you for your support. We are big together.”

Guimaraes is now set to join up with the Brazil squad for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Ecuador and Paraguay on September 6 and 10 respectively. The five-time world champions have won just one of their last eight competitive matches and sit sixth in the CONMEBOL World Cup qualification table.

Only the top six sides in the 10 team group are guaranteed World Cup qualification.

Former Tottenham Hotspur defender Michael Dawson believes Newcastle United endured a ‘really hard’ transfer window after failing to land their top targets.

The Magpies ended the summer having signed just two senior outfield players in the form of Will Osula and Lloyd Kelly whilst also missing out on the signing of Marc Guehi - a man they had chased for around a month before seeing their efforts frustrated by the Eagles. Newcastle now know they will have to deal with their lot until the January transfer window opens at the turn of the year and Dawson, speaking on Sky Sports, believes the club may regret ‘putting all of the eggs’ in signing Guehi.

Dawson said: “Newcastle, for me. I look at the way they’ve been in the transfer market, they put all of the eggs in the Marc Guehi situation and unfortunately for Newcastle, with the injuries in that position, with Botman out, Lascelles out, obviously Schar will be back from suspension, but that was a position I thought they had to go and improve. Unfortunately for them, Marc Guehi didn’t happen.

“I look in attacking areas, they brought in Osula from Sheffield United. I’m thinking, is that one for the future? It wasn’t too long ago we were talking about Newcastle looking at these superstars, supposedly. Ok, they can’t spend the money they’ve got - but I think it’s been a really hard window for Eddie Howe.

“They obviously haven’t, for whatever reason, been able to do that (bring in more players). Even in midweek, I covered them in the Carabao Cup, Nottingham Forest made more changes than Newcastle could make because their squad isn’t big enough.

“Yes, they’ve been dealt loads of injuries but the recruitment, what they’ve brought in, Lloyd Kelly on a free, good signing, but he’s a free transfer, he’s a box ticked, Eddie’s worked with him before. But I’m expecting Newcastle United, Champions League, what they’re expecting these fans, from where they’ve been, with these owners, they just can’t spend it and it’s been hard for Eddie Howe.”

Newcastle now have a two week break before they return to Premier League action against Wolves after the international break.

Newcastle United were under the cosh for long periods against Spurs on Sunday afternoon, but it took just one moment to completely transform their fortunes.

Much like their two league games so far this campaign, the Magpies started well but faded as they let their opponents dominate. Unlike their last two Premier League outings, however, on Sunday they came up against a very good Tottenham Hotspur side and could - and probably should - have been punished for their dip in performance.

However, credit to Eddie Howe’s side, they stayed in the game and reacted from conceding an equaliser to give themselves a chance of victory - one that was taken by Alexander Isak twelve minutes from time. However, it was a moment exactly ten minutes before that goal which sparked their comeback into life.

As Howe has done well in previous games, he turned to his bench to help get his side over the line and this time, ten months in the making, he had Sandro Tonali to turn to. The focus of Wor Flags’ brilliant pre-match flag display, the Italian’s introduction raised the roof at St James’ Park and galvanised a crowd that had fallen a tad quiet as Ange Postecoglou’s side began to dominate possession and territory.

Much like the sending off of Fabian Schar 15 days ago, visiting teams should never give 52,000 Newcastle United fans a reason to make their voices heard. History repeated itself this weekend and again the vast majority of those at St James’ Park went home with smiles on their faces.

It is a cliche to say the crowd were the ‘12th man’ but once again that turned out to be true. Tonali may not have directly contributed to the winning goal, nor did he make any goalsaving challenges during his time on the pitch, but simply his presence gave his side and the crowd added impetus on a day that had threatened to fall flat.

Relying on a spark to lift the crowd is not a long-term solution for Newcastle United - but it has arguably won them four points already this season. Now their challenge is to ensure their performances on the pitch keep the crowd at that level for 90 minutes.

Newcastle United secured a 2-1 win against Tottenham Hotspur courtesy of goals from Harvey Barnes and Alexander Isak.

Barnes gave them the lead in the first-half as he pounced on a good ball from Lloyd Kelly to guide the ball past Guglielmo Vicario in the Tottenham Hotspur goal. Spurs then pegged back their hosts before Alexander Isak restored their lead with 12 minutes of normal time left to play.

The win ensured Newcastle would end the first period of the Premier League unbeaten as they head into the international break having taken seven points from their first three league games and progressed in the Carabao Cup. Whilst Isak will get the headlines, as will a returning Sandro Tonali who made his first St James’ Park appearance since returning from a ten-month ban, it was Barnes’ opener that sent the Magpies on their way.

That goal marked his second goal in back-to-back starts for the Magpies having also netted against Brentford in the final game of last season. After a frustrating debut campaign on Tyneside, Barnes will be hoping to have a more successful second season.

His strike against Spurs certainly caught the attention of Alan Shearer who described the win as ‘huge’.

Taking to X, on Barnes’ goal, Shearer wrote: ‘Gan on @harveybarnes97 #NEWTOT’

And on the win, he wrote: ‘A huge win for the Toon despite not being at their best!!! #NEWTOT’

Newcastle United’s win against Spurs ensured they ended the day three points above their opponents as Howe’s side head into the international break among a clutch of team still yet to taste defeat.

Newcastle United defeated Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 at St James’ Park to end a frustrating summer on a high.

Newcastle United ended the summer window having made just two senior outfield signings in the form of Lloyd Kelly and Will Osula. Their pursuit of Marc Guehi ended in frustration but their return to action saw them record a 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur in a result that slightly allays fears on Tyneside.

The Magpies were watched on by chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan who sat alongside CEO Darren Eales and sporting director Paul Mitchell. Jamie Reuben was also in attendance as Harvey Barnes and Alexander Isak secured all three points for Eddie Howe’s side.

Taking to X after the game, Reuben revealed he was ‘proud’ of Newcastle’s efforts against Spurs and revealed that he and his fellow owners remain ‘committed’ to achieving their vision despite an underwhelming summer window.

He wrote: ‘So proud of that result today - we have a brilliant manager, group of players and together with management -ownership is committed to delivering the highest levels of football at @nufc for our supporters who give up so much of their time and money to support this great football club, there will always be bumps along that road but we are one #United Team in our pursuit of that ambition’

Newcastle United now have a fortnight to wait until their next Premier League game. That will come against Wolves at Molineux on Sunday 15 September before a trip to Craven Cottage the following Saturday.

Newcastle beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 at St James’ Park with Harvey Barnes and Alexander Isak scoring either side of a Dan Burn own goal. It sees The Magpies continue their unbeaten start to the new season after four games.

“A great response really from the players, from the guys that came on the pitch to find a way to win. It's so difficult to win in this league, especially if you're not at your absolute best and we're finding a way to do it.

“So it's great signs, but we know longer term, we're going to need to improve our performance. Hopefully now all the off-field talk can disappear and we can focus on the pitch and the players that matter.”

Newcastle head into the international break unbeaten but it follows a very frustrating summer in which the club didn’t make any major signings.

“Well, it's massive and you need to win at any stage, but I think when there's difficult moments and this transfer window has been tough for us,” Howe added. “I think it's even more important because it just enables you to see things clearly and to move forward with positive momentum. Hopefully we can do that.”

After a turbulent summer off the field, Newcastle chairman and PIF governor Yasir Al Rumayyan was in attendance at St James’ Park.

“No [I haven’t spoken to him],” the Newcastle boss continued. “But I hope to catch up with them afterwards.

“Challenging [summer] in one word. Challenging because we knew going into the window, it was going to be challenging and it proved no different. The only thing I can do is tell you my feelings and that'll be the same for everyone connected with the club.

“There's no one in a different position who's connected with the club that's wanting to do as good a job as we all can and try and improve the squad, it was challenging. But by not spending the sums that maybe was expected hopefully, that helps us in future windows.

“I don't know as I sit here today hopefully, that gives us a bit more freedom in the future to be a bit more proactive.”

Alexander Isak scored his first goal of the season as Newcastle United beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 at St James’ Park on Sunday.

Harvey Barnes’ first-half opener was cancelled out by a Dan Burn own goal in the second half before Isak stepped up and tapped in the winner from Jacob Murphy’s pass to give Newcastle the win. It’s now four games unbeaten for The Magpies, who have picked up seven points from their first three Premier League matches for the first time since the 2011-12 season.

It had been a frustrating start to the season for Isak in front of goal as he finally got off the mark for the new season having hit 25 goals last season.

Newcastle United’s starting line-up to face Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League has been confirmed with a big decision made regarding Sandro Tonali.

After impressing on his return at Nottingham Forest, Tonali has dropped back to the bench as one of five changes from the Carabao Cup win. Kieran Trippier, Miguel Almiron and Lewis Hall drop to the bench while Joe Willock misses out due to injury.

There was an unexpected injury boost on the bench with Martin Dubravka named back in the side despite missing the last two matches due to a concussion. Eddie Howe has also named a front three of Anthony Gordon, Harvey Barnes and Alexander Isak, the same front three that started the 4-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur back in April.
