Spurs Set to Open Talks with Midfielder Amid Growing Serie A Interest - OneFootball - Deutsch

Contract Clock Ticking on Midfield Maestro

Tottenham Hotspur are preparing to open contract negotiations with Rodrigo Bentancur as the midfielder nears the final 12 months of his current deal. According to TBR Football, Spurs remain intent on keeping the Uruguayan despite “significant” interest from Serie A clubs.

Bentancur’s existing contract runs until summer 2025, and after 32 appearances this season under Ange Postecoglou, his influence in midfield has become undeniable. Signed from Juventus for £16m in 2022, alongside Dejan Kulusevski, he has gradually evolved into a key figure both on and off the pitch.

Postecoglou’s vision of high-intensity, possession-based football has found a reliable engine in Bentancur. With a squad poised for a summer overhaul, losing such a figure would be a major setback.

Talks Loom as Paratici Shadow Reappears

“Graeme Bailey – TBR Football chief correspondent, understands that Spurs are ready to start talks with Bentancur over a new deal.”

It’s a welcome sign of stability for a club where change is never far away. However, the plot thickens with reports linking Fabio Paratici – Tottenham’s former managing director – to a potential role at AC Milan. Should he assume control, TBR suggests he “could look to take the Tottenham man to AC Milan.”

Having “snubbed a return to Tottenham”, Paratici could now prove an irritant in negotiations as he looks to build a new Milan core – possibly with Bentancur at its heart.

Leadership Emerges as Spurs Eye Stability

Behind the scenes, Bentancur is also stepping up. “Tottenham staff have been impressed by Bentancur’s leadership,” and at 27, he’s entering the prime years of his career. A new deal would signal Tottenham’s intent to build around mature, reliable figures in a transitional era.

Meanwhile, the club is also seeking to extend Cristian Romero’s contract, another sign of a long-term core being identified.

Serie A Interest Adds Intrigue

With nine major honours to his name at Boca Juniors and Juventus, Bentancur’s pedigree is established – though as TBR note, “a tally he’s yet to add to in N17.” It’s easy to see why Serie A clubs are circling. Spurs must now weigh loyalty, timing and ambition to secure a deal.

Our View – EPL Index Analysis

This report from TBR Football will be music to the ears of Spurs supporters who’ve watched Bentancur blossom into one of the Premier League’s most composed midfielders. There’s a sense that, in a side still finding its balance under Ange Postecoglou, the Uruguayan’s calming presence is irreplaceable.

Fans should be encouraged by the news that “both Tottenham and Bentancur are happy with each other and plan to assess the situation during talks.” That said, many will also feel wary of AC Milan’s looming presence, especially with Fabio Paratici potentially pulling strings behind the scenes. Losing a player of Bentancur’s influence now would represent a major blow – not only tactically, but psychologically.

Supporters also know what tends to follow ‘significant interest’ – particularly when a player has just a year left. The hope is that Spurs can convince him of their upward trajectory. Talks must be swift and convincing.

If Postecoglou is to build a Spurs side capable of challenging consistently, Bentancur is precisely the kind of player to form a foundation around. Tie him down early, and others may just follow.

On Sunday afternoon in the Premier League, Spurs faced fellow London side Fulham on the road, for their final game before the first international break of the year.

For the task at hand, Ange Postecoglou opted for a line up of; Vicario, Spence, Romero, Davies, Udogie; Bentancur, Gray, Bissouma; Johnson, Solanke, Tel.

How things played out when Spurs played Fulham on Sunday afternoon

After a very slow start to the game from both sides, Bentancur had the first effort of any note, heading wide from a corner. A few minutes later, excellent wing play from Tel lead to him playing the ball across, but nobody was there to try and finish it. Usually the sort of opportunity Johnson thrives off.

With ten minutes of the first half remaining, Castagne had a presentable opportunity for the hosts, but he could not beat Vicario with his effort. That was that for the first half. Certainly not one one for the neutrals.

Ange looked to his bench at half time, introducing Son and Bergvall for Johnson and Bissouma.

Early on in the second half, Bentancur had another couple of efforts - meaning all of Spurs' shots in the first 50 minutes came from the Uruguayan midfielder. After 53 minutes, someone else finally had an attempt - as Solanke headed wide.

Midway through the second half, Maddison replaced Romero, with Gray moving back into the defence. He should have an assist immediately, but his ball could only be directed off target by Solanke. Big opportunity.

Spurs would be paid to may, as the hosts took the lead after 78 minutes, with Rodrigo Muniz opening the scoring. Not long before, Tel was replaced by Odobert. Aftter 86 minutes, Scarlett replaced Bentancur.

Then, with two minutes of normal time remaining, Ryan Sessegnon doubled the lead for the hosts. Because of course he did. Obviously. Duh. He had been on the pitch for a minute. So, so, so, so, so, so, so, so Spursy. Even for Spurs' standards that was very Spursy.

That would be that. Keeping it so real, that was such a chore. Every league game is going to be a chore until the end of the season. Now, imagine what the league games will be like if the club are knocked out of the Europa League. Bad enough as it is, never mind with no Europe to cling onto. Thank goodness it is the international break. Think a break is exactly what everyone needs for their own sanity.

Tottenham Hotspur Eyeing January Move to Sign Premier League Goalkeeper – Report | OneFootball

Tottenham Transfers: Spurs Eye Goalkeeper Amid Injury Crisis

In a bold move to strengthen their squad mid-season, Tottenham Hotspur is reportedly planning to offer an “escape route” to Wolverhampton Wanderers goalkeeper Sam Johnstone. This strategic decision comes as Spurs’ first-choice keeper Guglielmo Vicario remains sidelined with an ankle injury.

Spurs’ Goalkeeping Dilemma

Since November, Vicario’s absence has been keenly felt at Tottenham, with backup Fraser Forster stepping in. Despite the manager Ange Postecoglou’s initial confidence in Forster, the team’s recent performances have left much to be desired. Forster has conceded 15 goals in just seven Premier League appearances, underlining a critical vulnerability in Tottenham’s defensive lineup.

Johnstone’s Potential Move to Tottenham

TBR Football reports that Spurs are eyeing a loan deal for Johnstone to provide much-needed stability between the posts. This move is seen as a temporary solution while Vicario continues his recovery. Johnstone, who joined Wolves in August, has found himself second to José Sa, who has secured his position as the first-choice goalkeeper.

The idea of bringing Johnstone to Tottenham not only offers him a chance to reclaim regular first-team football but also presents Spurs with an experienced Premier League goalkeeper. This could be a crucial adjustment as they navigate the remainder of the season.

Strategic Transfer Goals

Beyond the goalkeeping position, Tottenham is reportedly setting sights on reinforcing other areas of the squad. A centre-back, winger, and striker are on the agenda, with potential moves including Fikayo Tomori and Manchester City’s Jack Grealish. The club’s approach appears to favour loans and strategic signings to optimize their squad without overwhelming financial commitments.

Tottenham’s Transfer Window Challenges

While the pursuit of Johnstone and other talents like Evan Ferguson signals a proactive transfer strategy, acquiring top players in January is notoriously challenging. Spurs will need to be particularly savvy in their negotiations to ensure that their mid-season reinforcements can integrate quickly and effectively into the team.

Our View – EPL Index Analysis

As a Tottenham Hotspur supporter, the prospect of Sam Johnstone joining Spurs offers a glimmer of hope in what has been a challenging season. The need for a reliable goalkeeper has been painfully evident, and Johnstone’s Premier League experience could be just what Tottenham needs to stabilize their defence.

Moreover, the potential signings of players like Fikayo Tomori and Jack Grealish would demonstrate a strong commitment to improving the squad across all areas. These moves could be exactly what Spurs need to push for a top-four finish and secure Champions League football for next season.

As fans, we must remain hopeful that these transfer dealings, while challenging in the January window, will bear fruit and propel the club back to competing at the highest levels. With the right blend of tactical acumen from Postecoglou and shrewd management off the pitch, Tottenham could well be on the path to a more successful and competitive phase.

On Boxing Day, Spurs took the field as they took on Nottingham Forest at the City ground for gameweek eighteen of the 24/25 Premier League season.

For the task at hand, Ange opted for a line up of; Forster; Spence, Dragusin, Gray, Udogie; Kulusevski, Bentancur, Sarr; Johnson, Son, Solanke.

How everything unfolded at the City Ground this Boxing Day

Within the first five minutes, Spurs had a breakaway in transition, but Son’s shot was very tame and straight at the goalkeeper. To his right was Johnson — back at his old stomping ground, and whom was in a very dangerous position, was clearly unhappy at the captain’s decision to shoot.

Just past the ten minute mark, Tottenham Hotspur linked Callum Hudson-Odoi was allowed far too much space to cut inside, but luckily fired his shot off target.

Twenty-eight minutes in, the hosts had the lead. After Spurs gave the ball away, Morgan Gibbs-White carried the ball forward, before slipping through Anthony Elanga with a through ball— who slotted into the bottom corner with a left footed finish. As he was bearing down on goal, Udogie was busy claiming an offside to the linesman, rather than trying to catch up to Elanga.

With essentially the last touch of the first half, Son struck a free-kick into the side netting. Ange’s side would go into the break with a 1-0 deficit and it all to do in the second half.

So, Spurs then have 45 minutes to break down a Nuno side with a lead to hold onto. Maybe the most predictable outcome of the season. This is being written at half-time, not full-time. It’s that obvious.

Seven minutes after the break, Forster steered an Elanga cross away, but only as far as Gibbs-White, whose effort he was able to save. From there, Spurs had a break, where they eventually wasted a corner. To make a change.

Minutes later, Johnson absolutely superbly took down the ball inside the Forest penalty area, taking Murillo out of the game, but his effort was saved by Matz Sels. By far the best chance Spurs had had all game.

Just after the hour mark, Nikola Milenkovic should have doubled the hosts lead, but headed over the bar from close range. Again, really poor defending from Spurs.

Ange responsed by introducing Maddison and Bergvall, whom replaced Bentancur and Sarr. With just under ten minutes to go, Werner and Porro replaced Son and Kulusevski. Then, Bissouma replaced Dragusin, who looked to have picked up an injury.

The game was summed up in stoppage time. Spurs had a chance to get a cross into the box, decided not to, lost the ball, and Spence was given a second yellow for stopping a counter attack.
