Real Madrid Eyeing Shock Move to Sign Tottenham Hotspur Star – Report | OneFootball

Real Madrid’s strategy in the transfer market has predominantly focused on bolstering their attacking options, as evidenced by their acquisitions of Kylian Mbappe and Endrick. However, a significant gap remains in their defensive lineup, particularly with key players like Eder Militao and David Alaba sidelined due to injuries. The absence of new signings in the defensive realm, particularly after missing out on Manchester United’s Leny Yoro, has led to an underwhelming defensive performance this season. The team has conceded 29 goals in 26 matches, highlighting a clear area for improvement.

According to a recent report by TeamTalk, Real Madrid is now shifting its focus to strengthening its back line. The Spanish giants have reportedly shortlisted Tottenham Hotspur’s Micky van de Ven as a potential January transfer target. The Dutch international, who joined Spurs in 2023 from Wolfsburg, has quickly become a pivotal figure in Ange Postecoglou’s defensive setup, known for his impressive speed and solid defensive skills.

Despite interest from one of Europe’s elite clubs, Tottenham maintains a firm stance on keeping their key players. Van de Ven, who is under contract until 2029, has been integral to Tottenham’s plans. He has, however, faced challenges this season, missing nine league games due to injuries, which has impacted the team’s performance adversely.

Spurs have explicitly stated their intent not to sell Van de Ven in the upcoming transfer window. Similarly, Cristian Romero, another vital part of the Spurs defense, has also been linked with Real Madrid in the past. Yet, Tottenham is only willing to consider his transfer if a substantial offer is made. It seems, then, that any attempt by Madrid to pry away Tottenham’s defensive linchpins in January would be met with significant resistance.

As the January transfer window approaches, Real Madrid is expected to hold meetings to finalize their target list. While Van de Ven is a preferred choice, Madrid’s scouting network is also evaluating other potential recruits, such as RB Leipzig’s Castello Lukeba, who could be available for around €60 million.

The potential departure of a key player like Van de Ven could have far-reaching implications for Tottenham. While the club is keen on enhancing its defensive squad, losing a top performer in the middle of the season could derail their campaign. Therefore, Tottenham’s resolve in holding onto their star defender could be crucial for their ambitions in the ongoing season.

As Tottenham supporters, the news of Real Madrid’s interest in Micky van de Ven brings a mix of pride and concern. On one hand, it’s a testament to the quality and potential of our players, recognized by one of the world’s most prestigious clubs. Van de Ven has been exceptional for Spurs, bringing speed, strength, and a keen defensive acumen that’s hard to match.

However, the thought of potentially losing such a vital asset in January is disconcerting. Given his contributions and the evident gaps his absences have created this season, it’s clear how much Tottenham relies on him. The club’s firm stance on not selling him offers some comfort, but the persistent interest from clubs like Real Madrid always carries a degree of uncertainty.

As fans, we must trust the club’s management to handle these situations with the team’s best interests at heart. Nonetheless, with Spurs aiming to bolster their defensive line rather than deplete it, the January window will be a period of apprehension and hope. Our priority must be stability and growth, ensuring our squad is robust enough to compete on all fronts, rather than yielding to lucrative offers that may weaken our team dynamics.

It seems like Tottenham Hotspur devastating performance against Liverpool got the better of them in their game against Nottingham Forest. The former side looked vulnerable and shaky before they had to settle for a 0-1 scoreline against them.

Defence

Fraser Forster made some good saves in the previous game and should be ready to take up the goalie duties once again. Djed Spence is suspended for this fixture after picking up a red card in the previous game. In his absence, Pedro Porro starts as the right-back.

While Archie Gray continues at the heart of the defence, Radu Dragusin’s injury means he makes way for Alfie Dorrington. Left-back Destiny Udogie will retain his spot in the lineup only if he gets the green light to participate.

Midfield

Ange Postecoglou is expected to bring Yves Bissouma and Lucas Bergvall in the middle of the park at the cost of Rodrigo Bentancur and Pape Matar Sarr.

Attack

While Dejan Kulusevski and Son Heung-min operate on the wings, the return of James Maddison is almost inevitable. He will replace Brennan Johnson in the lineup to play in the central areas.

Dominic Solanke wasn’t up to the mark against Nottingham Forest but his position is very much secured.

Ben Davies (hamstring) suffered a setback and will miss out, while Mikey Moore (illness), Guglielmo Vicario (ankle), Micky van de Ven (thigh), Cristian Romero (thigh), Wilson Odobert (hamstring) and Richarlison (hamstring) are nowhere near to returning.

Tottenham didn't appear as if they came to play in the first half. Typically Tottenham comes out blazing in most matches, flying to dead balls and not letting the other team keep possession for very long. However, during today's first half, Tottenham seemed content just keeping possession and absorbing attacks from their opponent. This didn't appear to be a change in manager Ange Postecoglou's strategy, as the team maintained their high defensive line and a handful of players did play with the urgency Spurs' fans have grown accustomed to this season.

Spurs condemned to yet another defeat away in the Midlands

This lack of effort I believe stems from the teams inability to string together wins this season. The highs of this season have been incredible, It was only 11 days ago that this same squad blasted Southampton 5-0, a game that saw their opponents fire their manager a mere few hours following the conclusion of the match.

With that being said, the lows have been the pure opposite, and a 6-3 loss to Liverpool on Sunday, a game which Tottenham was never truly in a position to win, seems to have shaken the squads confidence.

Combine that with a game against an opposition that is flying high on a run of games they would've never expected to have this season, under a manager whose past history with Tottenham would lead his squad to play harder against them than anyone else, and you get a game like this.

Radu Dragusin attempts to defend Nottingham midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White | BEN STANSALL/GettyImages

The transfer window can not come fast enough. This team is in desperate need of reinforcements for their defense. Today they lined up with a patchwork back four that saw Archie Gray, a player who was a midfielder before he came to Spurs, lined up at centre back, Djed Spence, a promising young player, lined up at right back, Destiny Udogie, the teams only full-time defensive starter in the opening lineup today, at left back. Finally Radu Dragusin, a backup centerback, lined up next to Gray in the middle.

This was a plan that was forced on Ange Postecoglou due to injuries and fitness. Micky Van De Ven and Cristian Romero are both still out due to injury, and Pedro Porro has had a seemingly minor injury that has been nagging him in recent weeks. That injury kept Porro on the substitutes bench until the final minutes of todays match. Tottenham has to invest in their back four this transfer window if they want to turn this season around.

The fact is that Tottenham's depth on the back line wasn't strong coming into the season, and now that the entire starting back four has dealt with injuries this season, inconsistency has become the calling card of the Spurs' defense. Radu Dragusin, a player who does have promise as a centerback, is not built for the current system Spurs want to run.

The Romanian defender is built as the type of defender that thrives in a counter attacking system, one that absorbs pressure and then thrives off of long balls from their back four. Dragusin delivers deep passes over the top incredibly well, but his lack of pace has caused Tottenham problems all year, and It was a high-speed counter attack that led to the goal that defeated the Spurs today.

Finding some pacy central defenders who can step in for either Romero or Van De Ven should be goal number one for the club in January.

I'm going to say something that I don't believe most Spurs fans will agree with, but booting Ange Postecoglou will not solve the problem that Spurs are having. This squad has bought in to the system the Australian manager has installed, and if the team can get healthy and find some consistency, history shows that his team can go on runs. Postecoglou was unbeaten in his first 11 premier league matches as Spurs' manager, and that run was not a fluke.

This squad, when healthy, is built to thrive in the system Ange brings, but the lack of health has exposed the fatal flaw in the squad, which is the depth. Tottenham fans can point back to multiple points over the previous decade where the club has decided not to dig deep into their wallets and spend money investing in a team, and even one of the Spurs' own players has pointed this out this season.

Cristian Romero, in an interview with Telemundo Deportes following Tottenhams 3-4 defeat against Chelsea on December 8th, said this when asked about Tottenham's lack of investment in their squad, "The truth is I would say no comment but... Manchester City competes every year, you see how Liverpool strengthens its squad, Chelsea strengthens their squad, doesn't do well, strengthens again, and now they're seeing results."

Spurs fans have been critical of Chairman Daniel Levy for years, and the truth is that until the club learns you have to spend to win, they will continue to lose. You can fire every manager that you bring in, but until you learn to invest in the players you put on the field, no manager is going to be able to achieve the goals the club's fans want them to.

Spurs next game will come against 18th placed Wolverhampton Wanderers on December 29th, a game that might give the Spurs a chance to head into the January window with a victory.

Tottenham Hotspur loan watch: Mixed bag on the continent | OneFootball

Over in Spain, there was a final round of La Liga games before the winter break. Despite there being 38 games (Bundesliga has 34), the next round of fixtures will take place in mid-January.

With this final round of games, there were games for two Spurs loanees. On Saturday, Bryan Gil and his Girona side were in action at home to Real Valladolid. Meanwhile, on Sunday, Alejo Veliz and his RCD Espanyol side were in action away to Las Palmas.

Mixed weekend in Spain ahead of the annual winter break

We begin with Girona. For this game, manager Michel deployed Gil on the left in a 343 set up. Often, that would be as a number ten; but both the Tottenham loanee and his counterpart Yaser Asprilla were used very wide.

As for the collective, Gil’s side would get back to winning ways, as they dispatched their visitors with a 3-0 win. Former Spurs forward Arnaut Danjuma scored the third goal off the bench. Ex goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga started in goal, keeping a clean sheet.

Whilst he did not score or assist, it would still be a solid enough shift from Gil, who recorded; two shots, 65 touches, 33 accurate passes, 1/1 accurate long balls, 5/8 ground duels won, two fouls drawn, and two tackles. He was replaced after 83 minutes.

This win leaves Girona in 8th place heading into the winter break, with 25 points from their 18 games to date. Overall a pretty decent start to the season, considering all of the top players that they lost in the summer.

Meanwhile, Veliz was once again on the bench for Espanyol, as he continues to struggle for regular minutes of late. The striker did come off the bench, unlike in other recent games— but was unable to make an impact, and his side were condemned to a 1-0 defeat in the Canary Islands.

This defeat leaves Espanyol in 18th place in La Liga, with 15 points from their 18 games, as they continue to take up the final relegation spot. Real Valladolid are bottom of the league, with 12 points from 18 games — so Gil’s Girona side have done Espanyol a favour.

Next up after the break for Gil and Girona is an away game against Alaves, whilst Veliz and Espanyol are in action against Leganes. Both games are on the 11th of January, so there will be more of a preview closer to the time.

Tottenham Hotspur loan watch: Battle of loanees in League One | OneFootball

On Saturday afternoon, there was a clash of the Spurs loanees in League One. Matthew Craig and his Barnsley side were in action at home to Josh Keeley, Jamie Donley, and their Leyton Orient counterparts.

Find out how the duel between loanees ended up playing out

Despite having played just one minute of football since October, Craig was named in Darrell Clarke’s starting XI for this game. Meanwhile, Josh Keeley and Jamie Donley continued their run of starts under Richie Wellens.

OneFootball Videos

In the battle of the loanees in midfield, it would be Donley who drew first blood. Just six minutes into the game, the teenager headed home at the back post from a corner, to give Orient the lead in the game.

Then, after 28 minutes, it was Donley’s turn to take a corner. He did just that, whipping in an inswinging ball, that was met by central defender Omar Beckles, who headed home to make it 2-0 to the O’s.

Eight minutes later, things would go from bad to worse for Craig. With Barnsley seriously struggling in the game, Clarke made a double substitution before half-time, and the 21-year old loanee was one of two players sacrificed.

However, it did not work. Six minutes into the second half, Orient had three. Having been go found by Donley, striker Charlie Kelman converted— making it one goal and two assists for the on loan Spurs man.

After 81 minutes, Donley was replaced after a really productive day at the office. In stoppage time, Orient would add one more to put the gloss on things with a whopping 4-0 win.

In goal, Keeley registered his fourth clean sheet in a row, with just the one save to make here. Perfect afternoon for the Spurs loanees at Orient.

This goal for Donley was his first ever in professional football. After the game, the midfielder joked at how Keeley kept reminding him he had scored more goals this season.

This win leaves Wellens side in 15th place in League One, with 25 points from 20 games. Meanwhile, Clarke’s side are in 9th place, with 30 points from 21. There was a time where Orient were in the bottom four, at the same time Barnsley were in the top six. Now, Clarke’s side are just five points ahead, having played a game more.

Next up is Boxing Day action for both games. Orient host Crawley Town at 13:00 GMT, whilst Barnsley travel to Bolton Wanderers for a 15:00 GMT kick off.
