Five things we learned in Tottenham’s win against Burnley, including Richarlison’s resurgence - TBR Football
Description

Tottenham and Richarlison got their Premier League campaign off to a perfect start with a 3-0 win against Burnley on Saturday afternoon.

Despite the comfortable scoreline, Thomas Frank’s side were made to work for the win, especially in the first half.

However, a Richarlison double put the Lilywhites in command, before Brennan Johnson rounded out the scoring.

Here are TBR Football’s five key takeaways from the game, starting with the enigmatic Brazilian.

Richarlison could play a vital role for Tottenham this season

Coming into the 2025/26 season, there were some doubts about Richarlison’s future in North London.

The Brazilian only scored four Premier League goals last term, and his pre-season form hadn’t done much to change Tottenham fans’ minds that he should be sold.

While rumours of a Richarlison exit still swirl, the 28-year-old could not have got off to a better start this season.

Filling in for Dominic Solanke as the Englishman is eased back into action, Richarlison’s display against Burnley was a superb all round striker’s performance, featuring two brilliant finishes.

It means he could yet play an important part for Tottenham this campaign. Failing that, his two goals will enable Daniel Levy to generate even more money for him, if he is to be sold.

Tottenham need more creativity before the transfer window closes

While a positive result, Tottenham’s performance against Burnley highlighted the well-known issue that the Lilywhites need more creativity.

Starting with a midfield three of Lucas Bergvall, Archie Gray and Pape Sarr, there was plenty of endeavour shown by Frank’s side, but not a great deal of guile.

To this end, Tottenham’s increasing links with Eberechi Eze are positive.

Similarly, Frank’s pursuit of Savinho will also help in this department.

Should both players be brought to the club, it will give the Danish manager more options and greater squad depth as he attempts to compete on four fronts.

Lucas Bergvall proves Tottenham’s long throws are here to stay

In Tottenham’s game against PSG, Frank deployed a weapon he used often while at Brentford: the long throw.

Using a back five in the UEFA Super Cup Final, it was Kevin Danso who shouldered this responsibility.

Reverting to a back four against Burnley, Danso was dropped to the bench.

Yet the long throw remained a feature of Tottenham’s play, as Lucas Bergvall stepped up to launch the ball into the box whenever he could.

It showed that regardless of system, Tottenham will likely continue to use the long throw as another method with which to hurt teams.

Thomas Frank is happy to change it up tactically

The aforementioned change to a back four against Burnley following the back five used against PSG is another thing learned, and another positive.

Last season, Ange Postecoglou received a lot of criticism for his failure to change his tactical set-up and be more pragmatic, especially as Tottenham were decimated by injuries.

That is a marked change to Thomas Frank, who, despite criticism from Paul Merson, has already used two different systems in his first two games in charge in North London.

This should make Tottenham harder to beat, as proven by their performance against PSG across the 90 minutes on Wednesday.

Indeed, Tottenham fans were full of praise for Frank after the Super Cup Final, meaning this adaptability and pragmatism is likely to be something they will support.

Thomas Frank needs time to stamp his authority on Tottenham

Finally, while the result was a convincing one, the performance against Burnley wasn’t as free-flowing as Frank would have liked.

In the first half, for example, Burnley had 10 shots to Tottenham’s five, causing some angst at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Per BBC Sport’s match coverage, between the 12th minute and half-time, Tottenham also failed to have a shot.

It shows that Frank still has work to do to implement what he wants as he settles into his role.

This will come with time, though, provided the Dane is given it.

Tottenham player ratings vs Burnley, Mohammed Kudus and Richarlison shine but 5/10 star proves underwhelming - TBR Football
Description

The Thomas Frank era is well up and running at Tottenham following an emphatic win over Burnley in North London.

Tottenham Hotspur produced a swift bounce back from the UEFA Super Cup defeat with a 3-0 win over Scott Parker’s team in their first Premier League fixture.

A Richarlison brace, including a sensational overhead kick, and another from Brennan Johnson secured a big three points for Spurs.

But the Brazilian wasn’t the only player to steal the headlines, with Mohammed Kudus also impressing on his first game at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Guglielmo Vicario – 7

Guglielmo Vicario had a surprisingly busy afternoon in North London as he made four saves against the Premier League’s newly promoted team.

The Italian wasn’t great in the penalty shootout against PSG, but certainly made up for it against Burnley with some solid moments in the net.

Pedro Porro – 7

Pedro Porro continues to show he is improving defensively all the time for the Lilywhites and helped keep Burnley at bay.

The Spanish defender was also a threat going forward with 87 touches and 42 passes completed against Burnley.

Micky van de Ven – 6

Tottenham will be hoping that Micky van de Ven can stay fit this season, with his partnership with Cristian Romero set to be crucial for Thomas Frank.

The 24-year-old wasn’t really tested on Saturday afternoon, but mopped up when called upon with his explosive pace.

Cristian Romero – 7

Romero was very solid in defence, making several key tackles and being overly aggressive as he often is, but that put off the Burnley attack from some close to scoring.

The Argentine made two blocked shots and three interceptions against the Premier League newboys to help keep a clean sheet.

Djed Spence – 7

Djed Spence keeps proving why he should be in the next England squad as he followed up his strong display against PSG with another great showing against Burnley.

Archie Gray – 6

Archie Gray wasn’t at his best against Burnley, and the importance of signing Joao Palhinha was highlighted against Burnley.

The Portuguese midfielder will need to start most matches, with Gray still learning his trade.

Lucas Bergvall – 7

Lucas Bergvall is showing signs of getting back to his best after a solid display on Saturday against the Clarets.

The Swede was subbed off late on to a standing ovation in N17 following his superb work ethic in the middle of the park.

Pape Matar Sarr – 8

Pape Matar Sarr is turning into a key player under Frank already, as he set up Johnson’s goal with some great work.

The Senegalese international is showing that he can do a bit of everything for Spurs and the new Danish head coach will be looking at him as one of the first names on the team sheet.

Sarr was excellent against PSG and against Burnley, he produced another fine display.

Brennan Johnson – 5

Johnson started the season with yet another goal in his Spurs career, but overall, the winger struggled and highlighted the need for a top winger to be signed.

The 24-year-old failed to complete a single dribble up against Oliver Sonne and Kyle Walker, which will be a concern for Frank.

Richarlison – 9

The 28-year-old will be making Dominic Solanke start to sweat as he netted two superb goals in Spurs’ first win of the season.

His second goal could already be a contender for strike of the season, as he scissor-kicked Kudus’ ball into the box past Martin Dubravka.

Mohammed Kudus – 9

Kudus was another player subbed to a standing ovation, but his was without doubt deserved, with two brilliant assists.

Tottenham are hoping they’ve signed the Kudus from the 2023/24 season, and against PSG, and now Burnley, he’s shown real flashes of getting back to his best.

Thomas Frank silences Paul Merson’s ‘Conte style’ criticism as Tottenham enjoy opening day win against Burnley

Thomas Frank silences Paul Merson’s 'Conte style' criticism as Tottenham enjoy opening day win against Burnley - TBR Football
Description

Tottenham got off to a winning start in Thomas Frank’s first Premier League game as manager, responding well to Paul Merson’s pre-match criticism.

The Lilywhites beat Burnley 3-0 thanks to two goals from Richarlison and one from Brennan Johnson.

They were made to work for the win, with Burnley having twice the number of shots as Tottenham in the first half alone.

However, the victory follows on from Tottenham’s strong performance against PSG in the UEFA Super Cup Final, which, despite the result, showed the North London club have improved defensively since the departure of Ange Postecoglou.

Yet, contrary to popular opinion, Merson wasn’t impressed with Frank’s side against the Champions League holders, posing questions that Tottenham responded to decisively in their top-flight opener.

Paul Merson claims ‘Tottenham fans want to see action’ as Thomas Frank era begins with win

Speaking on Sky Sports’ Gilette Soccer Saturday immediately before kick off, Merson did have some praise for Tottenham following Wednesday’s result.

The 57-year-old said, “Defensively, I thought they were great. They set up, and they stopped PSG playing, and they defended well.”

This was where the positivity stopped, however, with the former Arsenal winger continuing: “For me, it was tough to watch. I don’t see Tottenham fans liking that too much this season. I thought they were very defensive. I just didn’t see enough players getting up the pitch.”

Merson continued: “You know, working for set plays, working for throw-ons, corners – a bit like Brentford did [last season].

“Everyone was going mad on Wednesday night, and I was sitting there, and I was thinking, ‘I’m not sure how long Tottenham fans are going to have this. It was [Jose] Mourinho, [Antonio] Conte style. It wasn’t free-flowing.

Merson concluded: “Obviously, it was going to be better defensively than [under] Postecoglou, but going forward, Tottenham fans want to see action, and I don’t see them having [that defensive style] too long.”

With their strong result against Burnley following immediately afterwards, it didn’t take Frank’s side long to respond and prove Merson’s words somewhat premature.

Thomas Frank shows good adaptability against Burnley as attention turns to Man City

In his first two games, Thomas Frank has already shown he isn’t afraid to change the way his side plays.

Against PSG, Tottenham went with a back five, stifling their opponents and being tough to break down.

The former Brentford manager reverted to a back four against Burnley, however, taking the game to Scott Parker’s side.

This should only be seen as a positive by Tottenham fans. In a direct contrast to Postecoglou, Frank is unafraid to be pragmatic and adaptable depending on the opponent.

Ally McCoist says Tottenham sold a player who was even better than Neymar - TBR Football
Description

Tottenham Hotspur have had some incredible players during the Premier League era.

Indeed, Harry Kane was a world-class player at Spurs, Heung-Min Son was an all-time great, while Luka Modric was an eventual Ballon d’Or winner.

However, perhaps the most talented player to turn out for Spurs in the Premier League era is Gareth Bale.

The Welsh wizard won two PFA Player of the Year awards during his time at Tottenham, while he would go on to win five Champions League titles at Real Madrid.

Speaking to The Sun, Ally McCoist has been ranking and comparing some of the best wingers in football history, and he made an interesting claim about Bale.

Ally McCoist picks Gareth Bale over Neymar

McCoist was tasked with choosing between some of the game’s best wingers.

McCoist chose Mohamed Salah over the likes of Heung-Min Son and Vinicius Jr, but, in the end, the Egyptian was usurped by Neymar.

Neymar won his battles against the likes of Eden Hazard and Ryan Giggs, but when McCoist was asked to pick between Neymar and Gareth Bale, he opted for Bale.

Bale was a truly magical player at his best, and McCoist reckons he was even better than Neymar at his best.

Gareth Bale compared to Neymar

Bale and Neymar are undoubtedly two of the best attacking players of this generation, and it’s interesting to compare the two.

Neymar does have a better record than Bale in terms of goalscoring, but when it comes to winning big trophies and turning up in big moments, there aren’t many better than Bale.

Yes, Neymar has more league titles than Bale, but many of those were over in Ligue 1 when PSG were ruling the roost with very little competition.

In Europe, Bale is the top dog, and that is perhaps what defines his legacy more than anything else.

Regardless of who you prefer, it has to be said that Bale and Neymar are two of the best to ever do it.

Manager comments give Tottenham encouragement in bid to sign ‘extraordinary player’

Manager comments give Tottenham encouragement in bid to sign ‘extraordinary player’ - TBR Football
Description

Tottenham Hotspur are in the market for a new attacking player, with the London side set to compete on four fronts in 2025-26.

Thomas Frank’s men will open their Premier League season by hosting newly-promoted Burnley on Saturday, with the Spurs faithful hoping for three points.

Tottenham sold Son Heung-min to LA Galaxy earlier this summer and as such, they are in transition in attacking areas.

Despite Tottenham signing Mohammed Kudus from West Ham, the London club will surely be in the market for another attacking addition before the window closes on September 1.

Tottenham want Savinho to leave Manchester City for London, with the Brazil international a player that Spurs admire.

City boss Pep Guardiola was asked about the South American winger’s future ahead of City’s trip to Wolves this weekend, with the Spanish manager stating he had not spoken to Savinho about a possible transfer.

“Whether it’s Tottenham in that case or any other club, a player should call the club [if they wish to move],” Guardiola said, according to The Guardian.

I am only concerned right now that Savinho will be with us for the rest of the season and hopefully many years because, at 21 with the potential he has, he has to improve in final positions but he is an extraordinary player.

“At the end, as always, the desire of the players is above everything but then they have to find an agreement with the club.

“If they don’t reach an agreement, the player will be here because the club spends money on those players.

“If they want to leave, they will come to me. If they want to leave, they will knock on my door.”

Savinho will not be part of the City squad this weekend as he nurses an injury.

Savinho must decide where his future lies

While a deal to sign Savinho will be tough to complete, Tottenham should take encouragement from Guardiola’s comments.

City clearly do not want to keep players who see their future elsewhere, with Jack Grealish joining Everton on loan earlier this month.

For Tottenham, convincing Savinho that he can play a key role for the club in both the Premier League and Champions League could get a deal over the line.

The Brazilian would add pace, power and cut-through to Tottenham’s attacking options and provide competition to Kudus and Brennan Johnson on Spurs’ right.

Tottenham predicted XI vs Burnley, Thomas Frank’s selection dilemma should accelerate Eberechi Eze talks

Tottenham predicted XI vs Burnley, Thomas Frank's selection dilemma should accelerate Eberechi Eze talks - TBR Football
Description

Thomas Frank’s team face Burnley in their first Premier League game of the season at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The Danish head coach will be looking to pick his side back up following their disappointing UEFA Super Cup defeat to Paris Saint-Germain.

Tottenham Hotspur managed to surrender a 2-0 lead with just five minutes of normal time remaining to miss out on the chance of more European silverware.

But the Lilywhites did show much promise against the European champions and will head into Saturday’s season opener full of confidence.

Thomas Frank is in desperate need of an Eberechi Eze-type signing before Burnley

Thomas Frank is unlikely to be so defensive against Burnley as he was against PSG and will revert to a 4-2-3-1 formation.

Although the 51-year-old is likely to remain without an obvious number ten option, with Tottenham’s talks for Eberechi Eze still ongoing.

TBR Football understands that Arsenal are out of the race for Eze, leaving Spurs with a clear run at signing the Crystal Palace forward.

Pape Matar Sarr is once again set to play in the more advanced midfield role, with the deal for the 27-year-old unlikely to be done in time for the first game of the new season.

That means just one change for the former Brentford manager, with Wilson Odobert coming in to replace Kevin Danso to allow Spurs to be a bit more attacking.

Mohammed Kudus impressed against PSG and will be making his home debut in N17, which will excite the home supporters.

Tottenham are also continuing work on Savinho, but doing a deal for Eze appears to have become the main focus for now.

Eberechi Eze tells Crystal Palace he is keen to join Tottenham

Tottenham’s hopes of signing Eze have been boosted by the fact that the midfielder has informed Crystal Palace he is keen to join Tottenham, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The North London club are believed to be readying their first offer for the England international, but the player’s desire to make the switch across London could help them.

Romano claims: “Tottenham are not only working on Savinho, but also Eberechi Eze. For Eberechi Eze, Tottenham are preparing a proposal to send to Crystal Palace to try to get the deal done for Eze.

“Tottenham are on it, the negotiation is set to start very soon, my understanding is that the player is clearly indicating to Crystal Palace that he is keen on a move to Tottenham.”

Tottenham valued at less than half Daniel Levy’s takeover asking price

Tottenham valued at less than half Daniel Levy’s takeover asking price - TBR Football
Description

Tottenham’s enterprise value is less than half the reported valuation of chairman and co-owner Daniel Levy, according to the latest research.

Spurs have been for sale – either in terms of a minority investment deal or a full takeover – for several years now. Daniel Levy confirmed as much in the club’s accounts for the 2022-23 financial year, though it had in fact been an open secret in the football finance industry for much longer.

Several different suitors have been reported. Paris Saint-Germain’s Qatari owners, the private equity firm MSP Sports Capital, and Amanda Staveley’s PCP Capital partners, to name just a handful.

But Tottenham remain resolutely under the control of Levy and ENIC, who have owned the club since 2000 and seen its value explode, as well as, to a lesser extent, the club’s 30,000 or so external shareholders.

Spurs’ Houdini tribute act in 2024-25 saw them qualify for the Champions League via the Europa League backdoor despite a historically bad Premier League season, which means the club can count on perhaps £100m of extra revenue next season, when total turnover is expected to eclipse £700m for the first time. Ahead of their season-opener against Burnley tomorrow, they have one of the lowest wages-to-turnover ratios in modern English football’s history, perhaps the world’s best stadium, and the luxury of being based in London, where investors flock in their droves. So why has a deal not materialised?

A range of factors have been cited. Among them is the apparent confusion of investors about the club’s capital structure. Ultimately, the club is owned by Tavistock, the Bahamas-based investment firm, but because of the Caribbean’s relaxed financial reporting requirements, the ownership structure of Tavistock itself – which was formerly overseen by Joe Lewis until his conviction for insider trading – is not clear.

However, seemingly a more pronounced factor is Levy’s £3.75bn valuation of Spurs which, according to various analyses, is likely to be a barrier either to a full takeover or, more likely, a minority equity deal.

And now, according to the latest report from Brand Finance, the total enterprise value of the North London club could actually be lower than the figures suggested elsewhere.

Tottenham’s brand value falls

A leading brand valuation consultancy, Brand Finance annually evaluates both the brand strength and enterprise values of hundreds of European football clubs.

In the newly-released 2025 edition, Spurs’ enterprise value does not make the global top-10, which is rounded off by Juventus at approximately £1.4bn, less than half of the £3.75bn Levy is looking for.

Meanwhile, the Tottenham brand – which Brand Finance essentially defines as the value they could command it they licensed their brand to a third party – is worth around £590m. In that category, they do make the top 10, but are eight per cent down compared to their brand value in 2024.

In terms of their brand strength, for which Brand Finance award a score based on the resilience of the club’s brand, Spurs also don’t make the top 10.

TBR Football spoke exclusively to Hugo Hensley, Brand Finance’s Head of Sports Services, to understand the ranking, discuss Levy’s role at Spurs, and assess where they are commercially.

Tottenham’s stadium naming rights strategy assessed

The obvious entry point into a discussion around Spurs’ commercial picture is the naming rights for the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, which have remained unfilled since the club moved into the stadium in 2019.

Levy has long been looking for a deal worth £25m per year and, as reported by TBR Football, has come close on a number of occasions before pulling the plug at the eleventh hour.

Spurs’ lack of urgency to forge a partnership is – according to the club’s commercial department, at least – due to the brand benefits of having Tottenham’s name above the door when superstar music acts or the NFL are hosted at the 62,850-seater stadium.

Hensley’s analysis on that? “Let’s say Tottenham earns £700m in annual revenue,” he said.

“What can we – speaking from the perspective of a naming rights partner – add to that based on that additional exposure to NFL and Beyonce fans?

“Are you going to get an extra 10% of fans properly engaging to increase revenue? No. Maybe 1% – seven and a half million. There are lots of Beyoncé fans, but how many are looking for a Premier League club?

“You don’t have to be that big as a multinational to get much stronger uplift because you’re directly commercially selling through that partnership – increasing exposure, familiarity, consideration, preference, ability to charge price premium.

“It’s about protecting the asset and thinking long-term. They want a partner they’re proud of, one that aligns with their vision. What other partners does that bring in? What does that enable them to do with long-term blue-chip, low-risk names they want to associate with?

“There’s more in that equation than exposing Tottenham to Beyoncé and NFL fans, especially when it will still be known as the stadium of that particular football club.”

The value of Spurs to QSI or another state-backed investor

Invariably when discussing potential investors in Spurs, QSI are named as a potential buyer. The sovereign wealth fund’s president, Nasser Al-Khelaifi, has previously met Levy to discuss a deal – though both clubs, of course, have denied that.

But how does the profile of a would-be buyer affect a club’s enterprise and brand value? And why might a Gulf state-backed entity be willing to pay more than a private equity titan?

“It’s why enterprise valuations are so hard – you get completely different multiples from different buyer types,” Hensley explains.

“They’re either trophy assets to value like a painting based on comparables, or they’re looking at ecosystem growth.

“US private equity buyers look at where the league will go. If broadcasting and viewership grows, engagement grows, that adds value. They’re modelling what money they’ll get out for money put in over what timeframe.

“If you’re Qatar, you spent £180 billion hosting the World Cup. Paying £5 billion over our valuation for Spurs doesn’t seem like a lot. If it means you’re slightly more likely to do a deal for natural gas or get a price premium because people like Premier League football and think you’re aligned with their values, you get incredible return on paying much over modelling.

“That’s soft power – buying into culture, saying you’re aligned, you care about what they care about. Newcastle tried hard to show alignment, positivity, not overstepping, wanting to be sustainable and financially responsible. Their ability to incrementally do more deals, get slightly preferable rates, get more meetings – their potential marginal increase can be much higher because of the size of brands they’re influencing.”

There are few clubs worldwide whose chairman has remained in situ for nearly three decades. Love him or loathe him, Levy is Mr Spurs. Even more so following the departures of figures like Harry Kane and Son Heung-min.

“Levy as a presidential figure can be good for the brand,” suggests Hensley.

“A figurehead off the pitch who can make statements and drive the club singularly can be very good. But you mostly only hear about it when they’re exceptional. The ownership can also be a punching bag for things going wrong if they’re a constant. But that’s also one of the least important drivers of following and engagement with the club.

“We have a question in our research: ‘Is the club is well run and managed off the pitch?’ Liverpool at 72%, Arsenal 55%, Manchester United 41%, Tottenham down at 20%. That score’s below Newcastle, Brighton, Aston Villa.

“This is a club with a billion-pound stadium, very secure revenues. They’re still in our top tier for brand value because of revenue streams they’ve secured, because they’ve got big financial services front-of-shirt partners versus low short-term, higher-risk partnerships.

Seventeenth place really hurt them – their brand strength slid to Newcastle’s level. They’re the sixth and seventh strongest Premier League brands. It’s looking less like the big six – more like the big five.

“It’s very much about your own fans. Maintaining their engagement where half your revenue comes from matchday, and they’re the ones strongly exposed to partnerships. Their engagement is what you’re selling to sponsors primarily.”

Jamie O’Hara gets angry after hearing ‘stupid comment’ about Tottenham live on air - TBR Football
Description

Tottenham Hotspur have begun a new era under Thomas Frank.

Spurs won the Europa League in the 2024/25 season with Ange Postecoglou at the helm, but their domestic form was diabolical.

Tottenham finished 17th in the Premier League table last term, which was their worst finish to a season in nearly 50 years.

Frank has now been tasked with leading Spurs to a significantly higher finish, and the expectation is that he will do that. They can’t get any worse than they were last season, can they?

Jamie O’Hara reacts to Jason Cundy’s prediction about Tottenham

Jamie O’Hara is hoping to see Tottenham have a very good season.

The Spurs-supporting pundit had a torrid time last campaign as he was ridiculed by his talkSPORT co-host Jason Cundy almost every week.

One would imagine that it can’t get any worse in the Premier League this season, but Cundy thinks things could go horribly wrong.

On talkSPORT on Thursday night, while speaking about wild predictions for the upcoming campaign. Cundy riled O’Hara up with a statement about Spurs.

“I don’t think this is that wild, actually – Spurs get relegated, mate,” he said.

O’Hara looked up to the heavens in disgust and was not happy at all. He hit back at his co-host, branding him as a ‘garbage talker’ and calling his prediction ‘stupid’ live on air.

He said: “I’m not having you come on here and be an absolute garbage talker.”

While Cundy tried to justify his comment, O’Hara, who was visibly annoyed, replied: “I’m asking you for a story which is not unrealistic that you think might happen this season. You can’t say Spurs are going to get relegated because it’s just not going to happen.

“It’s a stupid comment. You’re sitting there, sniggering at me, you think you’re funny, but you’re boring me!”

Could Tottenham get relegated in 2025/26?

Football is a funny game, and stranger things have happened in the past, but we would be shocked if Tottenham are anywhere near the bottom five, let alone in a relegation battle.

Spurs have become a lot more difficult to beat now, thanks to Thomas Frank, and since his style of play is less intense than Postecoglou’s, the risk of injuries should be lower.

Tottenham held their own against Arsenal in pre-season, and they were comfortably the better side against PSG in the UEFA Super Cup as well, even though they lost that game.

Those are extremely positive signs ahead of the new season, which is why we think Tottenham fans have nothing to worry about regarding relegation.

Description

TBR Football understands that Thomas Frank is pushing for Rodrigo Bentancur to be offered a new contract at Tottenham Hotspur.

The Uruguayan’s current deal is due to run until the summer of 2026 and the Danish head coach is keen for his future to be secured by Spurs.

Bentancur is quickly becoming an established player under Thomas Frank, having completed 90 minutes in the UEFA Super Cup Final penalty shootout defeat to PSG.

Having had a chance to assess his Tottenham Hotspur squad, Frank is now hoping that an agreement can be struck over a new deal for the 28-year-old.

Thomas Frank wants Rodrigo Bentancur to sign new Tottenham contract

Rodrigo Bentancur has really impressed Spurs’ new manager and discussions over a new deal are likely to take place soon, sources have told TBR Football’s chief correspondent, Graeme Bailey.

TBR Football revealed back in May that Bentancur was a contender to become the next captain at Tottenham, and new contract talks were already being planned.

Now, having had a chance to assess the former Juventus midfielder, Frank has made it clear to Spurs that he should be issued with a bumper new deal.

Bailey told TBR Football: “Bentancur is someone who we have covered previously, but he’s a player who has done really well. Obviously, a lot of people are thinking, ‘Oh, is there room for him in Frank’s side?’ There clearly is.

“The thing with Bentancur is his new contract. I do understand that Thomas Frank wants him to progress with that – he’s only got a year left, I think. My understanding is that Thomas Frank wants him to sign a new deal. He’s very happy with him.

“Obviously, we saw a strange formation on Wednesday, but I don’t think that’s really indicative of where Tottenham are going. We will see them play in the front three. I think he wants to be able to press and shut down from the front, which is a sign they’re still not done in the final third.”

Thomas Frank has a midfield headache at Tottenham

Frank has a nice midfield headache at Tottenham of having several top options to pick from in his squad.

Against PSG, he opted for Bentancur, Joao Palhinha and Pape Matar Sarr, which meant Lucas Bergvall and Archie Gray were left on the bench.

Tottenham are set to add Eberechi Eze to their options, with Tottenham remaining locked in talks with Crystal Palace over a deal for the 27-year-old.

Ian Wright makes Harry Kane claim which should really excite Tottenham fans

Ian Wright makes Harry Kane claim which should really excite Tottenham fans - TBR Football
Description

After leaving Tottenham Hotspur in 2023, Harry Kane is about to embark on his third season as a Bayern Munich player.

In total, Harry Kane has now scored 85 goals in 96 appearances for Bayern, and that’s not counting his goal against Tottenham in their recent 4-0 pre-season win.

But at 32-years-old, there’s still the feeling that Kane has unfinished business back in the Premier League.

Kane is yet to break Alan Shearer’s record in the English top flight, but he’ll probably still do so before he retires.

And whilst Manchester United have shown interest in signing Kane if he comes back to England, the Red Devils have now recruited Benjamin Sesko as their long-term starter.

Ian Wright thinks Harry Kane is about to return to the Premier League

That being said, Ian Wright just made a prediction that should therefore be of real interest to Tottenham fans.

Speaking on the ‘Stick to Football’ podcast, the panel were asked to give their hot take or bold prediction for the upcoming season.

And whilst the likes of Wright, Gary Neville and Roy Keane were all trying to be pretty out there with their claims, Jamie Carragher insisted, “you’ve got to believe it.”

Moreover, when it came to Wright, he made the prediction that Kane would return to the Premier League this season.

Wright simply stated: “Harry Kane to come back to the Premier League.”

In surprise, Neville then asked Wright if he expected that to happen in January, once the mid-season transfer window opens.

Wright then replied: “Yeah, I’m going to say yeah.”

Before the summer window started, Daniel Levy was keen to buy a striker for Tottenham – something that is yet to happen.

And therefore Spurs fans would be forgiven for hoping that things might line up nicely at the turn of the year.

Tottenham would be favourites to re-sign Harry Kane if he returned

Of course, there’s nothing to say that Wright can see into the future – only Kane will know what he’s planning to do next.

But if Kane were to return to England, it would currently seem as if Thomas Frank’s Tottenham side would be perfectly positioned to welcome him home.

Man United have Sesko, Manchester City have Erling Haaland, and even Arsenal have signed Viktor Gyokeres.

And whilst Spurs might fear some interest from Chelsea were Kane to make himself available, Tottenham would surely be well ahead in the race.

Perhaps there might be one or two Tottenham fans who feel as if their side would be better off looking to the future, rather than the past, but if Kane became available in January as Wright thinks he might, then it would surely be a no-brainer for Levy.
