Pereira | 'They showed the true spirit of this team'

Description

The head coach has picked up seven points from his opening three games in charge, but believes there is still plenty to improve as his team enter 2025 two points out of the relegation zone with half of the season remaining – although Pereira is confident his players have more than enough quality to push themselves out of danger.

On fighting back for a point

“First of all, in the Premier League, the atmosphere is fantastic, the stadiums are beautiful, and it’s something that I cannot explain, but what we feel, that is amazing. About the game, it was tough, a tough game.

“This [Tottenham] is a team who are very intensive, because they press a lot. In the first half, we had some problems to control the pressure, but we competed.

“Then in the second half, I think they dropped the block a little bit and we started to play a bit with the ball and started to create some problems. In the end, one point is not bad.”

On learning more about his players

“It was the first time with goals against. It was the first time that I saw the spirit to fight to turn over the result, and this is the spirit that I want. I'm very happy with them. We took a lot of risks and this week was a difficult week because we lost Toti injured, in the half time, Cunha had some problem in the hamstrings, so it means that this is not a squad with a lot of solutions, but the spirit and the players that went inside the pitch at half time, they helped and showed the true spirit of this team.

“Every time we have a lot of things to improve. I believe that when we will have time to work on the pitch, it is possible to have more possession and to control the game with the ball – I think this is something that we will increase with the level.

“But today, again, I'm proud of my players, because I saw the same spirit that I did in the other games, fighting, competing, personality, and in the second half, we scored to make it 2-2 and we had the chance to score to make it 3-2, but it was ok, and the result is a good result for us.”

On Hwang’s goal coming from the training ground

“It was the space that we had analysed from this team and we saw they concede this space, and we tried in the training and in the game. Sometimes we work a lot at something in training and it's not possible in the game, but today it was like a laboratory goal.

“We had two assistants directly studying the set-plays and they proposed the movement and they proposed the space – they do this every match, and this is their work. They asked me if I agree with the space, and I said to them, ‘I believe it can work’.”

On Cunha going off at half time

“I think it’s not serious, but he complained about some pain and I spoke with him, but he said to me, ‘Coach, it’s better to stay out’, so I respect the play.

“We have some players injured, we have Lemina injured, Traore, Toti and Sasa, but it’s not a big squad and it’s important that we are talking about going in the market. All the coaches want to go in the market, but I’m not a coach that wants a lot of players, I just want to be clinical and to help the team.”

On the relegation battle

“I truly believe that we'll stay in Premier League. If not, I would not have accepted the job. I believe in the players, I believe in the quality of the players, and I believe in our work, in our energy, in our strategical plans and I believe. I truly believe.”

Description

The Vitor Pereira era at Wolves continues unbeaten after his side battled back valiantly in the second half of their trip to north London to secure a point against Tottenham Hotspur.

Hee Chan Hwang gave the visitors the perfect start inside the opening 10 minutes when he found the corner of the net with a well-hit strike, but Spurs fought back to take a lead into the break through Rodrigo Bentancur and Brennan Johnson.

However, after coming on a half time, Jorgen Strand Larsen netted his seventh Premier League goal of his debut campaign in England to secure a point for the Old Gold when he hit a fantastic strike from a tight angle in the closing stages of an engaging contest in the capital.

Buoyed by their successive wins under Pereira, Wolves came out of the blocks strong at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with Matheus Cunha and Rayan Ait-Nouri linking well down the left as they looked to put the hosts under pressure.

Although the defence had to be strong to stop Spurs on the counter, it was at the other end of the pitch where Wolves struck first.

A free-kick routine straight off the training ground saw Andre play the set-piece – 22 yards out from goal – short to Ait-Nouri and the Algerian set the ball up for Hwang on the edge of the D, who hit a sweetly struck curling effort past Fraser Forster and inside the post.

However, it didn’t take long for the hosts to equalise and it was a corner which was Wolves’ downfall once more. Johnson’s out swinging delivery was met by the head of Bentancur, who got up highest in the box, to power his header past Jose Sa.

In an end-to-end first 45 minutes, Wolves had chances to regain the lead as Matheus Cunha struck two powerful efforts wide of the post, while also striking the wall from a free-kick, but it was Spurs who looked likely to add a second as they tried to exploit the visitors’ set-piece troubles- but Radu Dragusin headed just wide of Sa’s post from a corner.

A mix-up between Dominic Solanke and Dejan Kulusevski stopped a good chance for the hosts on the half hour mark as the former bundled over the latter as they both went for the ball inside the Wolves box, while Yves Bissouma shot well over the crossbar from a dangerous position.

Wolves were given another lifeline just before the break when referee Chris Kavanagh pointed to the penalty spot after Andre was adjudged to have felled Johnson in the box. However, the Portuguese pulled off a big save to get across to his right to push Heung-min Son’s effort away from goal.

But the hosts eventually broke through the Wolves defences with the last kick off the first half when Johnson was picked out in space inside the box by Kulusevski and fired a low driven effort past Sa.

Half-time | Tottenham 2-1 Wolves

Tottenham came out the break the stronger of the two sides as Pereira’s side had to ride the wave of pressure put on them by the hosts, but as the half wore on, the men in the purple shirts began to regain their confidence and believed there was a way back into the match.

The Portuguese made changes at the break to try to get level, with Strand Larsen and Goncalo Guedes providing a much needed spark in the attacking third.

After Santi Bueno fired high over the crossbar from 25 yards out after Rayan Ait-Nouri’s cross was blocked, it was Guedes who found space to have a go at goal, but he only found Craig Dawson’s midriff, leaving the defender in a painful heap.

Moments later, Dawson had a chance to head at goal himself, only to put the ball well wide of the post, while Spurs tried to extend their lead when Solanke battled with Bueno but the Uruguayan came out on top.

It was Bueno who was Wolves’ hero once again with less than 10 minutes remaining on the clock when he was able to clear off the line after Kulusevski was played into space and rounded Sa before seeing his effort turned behind.

Wolves secured a well-earned point in the dying moments of the contest when Ait-Nouri cut inside and played a perfect ball into the run of Strand Larsen who took a touch before finishing powerfully into the roof of the net from a tight angle.

The visitors were able to see out the remaining minutes of the 90 as well as almost 15 minutes of added time to claim the point which leaves the Old Gold unbeaten in Vitor Pereira’s reign.

Vitor Pereira confirmed that Mario Lemina could return from injury for the trip to the capital. The midfielder has missed the new head coach’s first two games with a calf injury but could be back in contention. Pablo Sarabia is expected to miss out once more, however. Should Rayan Ait-Nouri and Toti avoid a fifth yellow card of the season at Spurs, they’ll avoid a one-match ban. Yerson Mosquera, Boubacar Traore, Enso Gonzalez and Sasa Kalajdzic remain out long-term.

Tottenham have problems at the back. Goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario is out until March with an ankle injury and his regular two centre backs Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven are both out through injury. Radu Dragusin has deputised recently, but also left the pitch on Boxing Day with an ankle injury and he’ll be assessed before Sunday. Djed Spence was sent off in the same game at Nottingham Forest for two yellows, so is suspended. Richarlison is out until the new year with a thigh injury and Wilson Odobert is absent with a hamstring injury. Defender Ben Davies has had a setback in his recovery so will not face the Old Gold.

It’s two wins from two under Vitor Pereira and Wolves go into a matchday outside of the relegation zone for the first time in a month. The Boxing Day win over Manchester United brought Molineux its mojo back, with Matheus Cunha and Hee Chan Hwang scoring in the second half to continue the positivity from the new head coach’s first week. Previously, he’d began to turn the wheel in the other direction with a 3-0 success at Leicester City – the Old Gold’s last away game. Five goals and zero conceded from his first two games has been a positive start for Pereira.

Tottenham’s Christmas has been the opposite to Wolves so far. Ange Postecoglou’s side have lost both of their festive fixtures, going down 1-0 at Nottingham Forest on Boxing Day. Previously, they’d lost out in a nine-goal thriller with Liverpool, losing 6-3 to the league leaders. Their form has been inconsistent throughout December, with defeats to Bournemouth and Chelsea coming before wins over Southampton and Manchester United in the Carabao Cup.

Wolves have a decent record at Tottenham’s new home, having won on three of their five visits. The first of those came in March 2020, weeks before the Covid-19 pandemic, and Nuno Espirito Santo’s side recorded a memorable win. The hosts twice led through Steven Bergwijn and Serge Aurier, but, as they so often did during that memorable campaign, fought back through Matt Doherty and then Diogo Jota. Raul Jimenez won it with a moment of brilliance, turning and firing home after a trademark Adama Traore run.

Spurs | Gazzaniga, Aurier (Fernandes 82), Sanchez, Dier, Tanganga (Ndombele 76), Davies (Parrott 89), Winks, Lo Celso, Alli, Moura, Bengwijn.

Wolves | Patricio, Doherty, Boly, Coady, Saiss, Vinagre, Neves, Moutinho, Adama (Neto 74), Jota (Denconcker 79), Jimenez (Podence 89).

Last Five | Matt Doherty

Description

Wolves (45 apps | 8 goals)

Having played a key role in helping Wolves get back to the Premier League following their Championship-winning campaign under Nuno Espirito Santo, Doherty was set for one of his greatest ever seasons in the first spell of his Old Gold career. The wing-back was in his ninth season at the club and would go on to appear in every Premier League game of the 2018/19 season, where he found the net four times, while providing multiple assists to help the team finish in seventh spot and bring European football back to Molineux for the first time in almost 40 years. He also thrived in a thrilling FA Cup run, which saw the Irishman score four times in his six outings – including the crucial last minute equaliser away at Shrewsbury Town to take the tie to a replay at Molineux, where he found the net twice – as Wolves made it to the semi-finals, with Doherty opening the scoring at Wembley Stadium.

Wolves (50 apps | 7 goals)

The right wing-back position was tied down by Doherty heading into 2019/20 as Wolves ventured into third first season in the Europa League. The Irishman continued his form in the top-flight of English football as he found the net another four times across the campaign – including a stunner which saw Wolves fight from two goals down to beat Manchester City – where he missed just two matches due to injury. Having started the season on the treatment table, Doherty was absent for Wolves’ first jaunt into Europe, but he returned to score in the 4-0 win over Pyunik in qualifying. He was a regular under Nuno in the Europa League group stages, and featured in the quarter-final as Wolves fell to eventual champions Sevilla. That was believed to be his final appearance in Old Gold.

Tottenham Hotspur (29 apps | 0 goals)

During the summer of 2020, having racked up more than 300 appearances for Wolves, Doherty switched to fellow Premier League outfit Tottenham Hotspur, although the regular spot he had secured at Molineux was not as forthcoming in white. He was in and out of the Spurs team throughout their top-flight campaign, despite earning an assist in a 1-0 win over former arch-rivals West Bromwich Albion. With just 17 outings in the Premier League that season, many of his Spurs appearances and assists came in the Europa League. Having featured in the qualifying stages, he played all but three times as Tottenham made it into the last 16 of the competition. Doherty claimed two assists in the last 32 against Wolfsberger AC as Spurs claimed an 8-1 win on aggregate.

Tottenham Hotspur (26 apps | 2 goals)

Doherty’s second season at Tottenham was a similar tale to his first, with the right-back coming in and out of the team during a Premier League season which saw Spurs finish fourth and had started under his former Wolves boss Nuno. The Irishman featured for just seven minutes off the bench of the opening day win over Man City, before having to wait another three months to make his next cameo appearance in a goalless draw against Everton. Doherty played just 15 times in the Premier League that season, but he did score twice for the club – in a 4-0 win against Leeds and a 5-1 victory against Newcastle – during a run of games which saw him feature nine times in 10 fixtures until an MCL injury brought an early end to his season. He also played three times in the Europa Conference League as Spurs were unable to get out of their group.

Tottenham Hotspur (16 apps | 1 goal)

Atletico Madrid (2 apps | 0 goals)

Although his injury kept him out of the republic of Ireland’s summer Nations League matches, Doherty was back in time for the start of the Premier League season where he came off the bench for the final four minutes of the opening day win against Southampton. He was utilised further up the pitch under Antonio Conte, as he returned to a wing-back position that he had flourished in during his time at Wolves. However, he scored just once before making a January move to Atletico Madrid, as Spurs demolished Crystal Palace 4-0. A first venture out of the English leagues since a loan away from Molineux at Hibernian in 2011/12 saw Doherty head to Spain for the final months of last season, but he was unable to force his way into the side, as he made just two La Liga appearances, combining for 16 minutes, as he came on late in heavy wins over Sevilla and Cadiz respectively.

Description

Tottenham Hotspur 2-3 Wolves | 1st March 2020

Raul Jimenez scored a brilliant and crucial winner on Wolves’ first trip to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium back in 2020.

Wolves had twice come from behind through Matt Doherty and Diogo Jota, and when the latter sent Jimenez in, he turned past Japhet Tanganga and fired home the winner.

It was Wolves’ second successive win at Spurs, having claimed three points at Wembley the previous season, and came as Nuno Espirito Santo’s were amidst one of their most thrilling ever.

“It’s an amazing feeling that we came here, to a very difficult pitch, and took the three points. I’m proud of all my teammates and all the team, that we did what we needed to win this game.” Raul Jimenez

“It's amazing the energy levels that we put into the game. They recover very well. It's a challenge, and when you really embrace the challenge you give everything you have, and this is what we are doing.” Nuno Espirito Santo

The lasting impression

The win saw Wolves leapfrog Spurs into sixth, three points off the Champions League spaces. Wolves were eventually pipped to sixth pop by Spurs on goal difference, therefore earning the North Londoners European football the following season.
