Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou has reportedly had a change of heart regarding Djed Spence, with the 24-year-old full-back now expected to play a key role in the squad moving forward.
According to GiveMeSport, Spence’s recent performances have impressed the Spurs boss, effectively quashing any plans to offload him in the January transfer window.
Ange Postecoglou wants to keep Djed Spence
Spence’s future at Tottenham looked uncertain earlier this year, with speculation linking him to a January exit from North London. Limited opportunities in the team, combined with loan spells at Rennes, Leeds United, and Genoa, painted a picture of a player struggling to carve out a long-term role.
However, his development during these stints, particularly in Serie A with Genoa, and his form in pre-season caught Postecoglou’s attention. Since returning to the fold this season, Spence has made eight appearances across all competitions, contributing a goal and two assists. His ability to adapt, including stepping into the left-back position during Destiny Udogie’s injury absence, has been a crucial factor in his resurgence, and has even earned praise from the manager.
Signed from Middlesbrough in July 2022 for £20 million on a five-year deal, Spence initially found himself on the fringes of the squad under previous managers. But under Postecoglou’s leadership, he has seized his opportunities, with the club hierarchy reportedly impressed by his determination and tactical versatility.
One of his standout moments came in the EFL Cup, where Spence scored his first competitive goal for Tottenham in a 2–1 victory over Coventry City. Such performances have helped cement his place in the team during a challenging period, with Tottenham facing defensive struggles and injuries to key players.
Postecoglou’s decision to retain Spence signals a vote of confidence in the defender’s potential to contribute to the club’s long-term ambitions. With Tottenham aiming to stabilise after recent setbacks, Spence’s resurgence provides a much-needed boost.
The Australian manager’s high-pressing, attack-minded system often relies on dynamic full-backs, and Spence’s pace, energy, and versatility make him an ideal fit. His ability to perform on both flanks adds depth and flexibility to a squad that has been stretched thin due to injuries.
For Spence, this could mark a turning point in his Spurs career. Once on the verge of being cast aside, he now has the opportunity to establish himself as a vital member of the squad.
